Women & Children’s Crisis Center Architecture Final Project | 2021 Supervisor : Dr. Eng. Bangun I. R. H. S.T.,M.T

Violence against women, particularly domestic and sexual violence, is a significant public health concern and has consistently occurred every year in Indonesia. As the capital city of Indonesia itself, Jakarta has 2.461 cases of sexual violence in 2020, and know that many more remain hidden for every case reported. Although various facilities to assist victims counted as considerable, there’s still a lack of integrated facilities that could accommodate victim’s needs, such as medical help, psychological support, safe shelter, and even facilities for women’s empowerment programs. Women and Children’s Crisis Center is an integrated solution for helping abused victims to get better. The concept behind this project is to discover how architecture as a built environment could create a healing and meditative space. Use studies and research about “Healing Environment” on how the physical environment could affect human feelings and behavior. Specifically, to accelerate the healing process (mentally and physically) for abused victims, mainly women and children.

: Setiabudi Rd., South Jakarta : 20 ha

There are some considerations for site selection, and the main reason is that this site doesn’t have much noise and is suitable for private and meditation areas. This site is also very accessible for private vehicles and pedestrians because it is near several public transportation access. The other reason is that the site is near supporting facilities such as healthcare facilities, police stations, mosques, and residential areas. This site also possible to have a spacious green area for a healing garden and other supporting landscapes.

Design Development

Specify the in and out entrance for private vehicles, services, and pedestrians

Zoning the landscape based on “The Seven DImensions of Wellbeing”. The aim is to make green areas accessible from every sides of the buildings.

Creating macro zoning based on privacy level. Public areas are more near the entrance road.

Creating micro zoning that contains 7 building mass with their own functions and needs.

Adding voids to each mass to expose the inner courtyard and as implementation on Healing Environment.

Adding more levels to maintain the placemaking program and room capacity.

The design of Women and Children's Crisis Center applied three elements of the Healing Environment approach, namely nature, the five senses, and psychological characteristics. The most dominant application of the three elements is providing optimal green open space both outside and inside the building. The natural element then affects the other two elements to create a built environment that can accelerate the recovery of the physical and psychological trauma of abused victims.

Balai : Transforming a Traditional Joglo Architecture Studio 5 | 2020 Supervisor : Bharoto S.T.,M.T

Recently, there has been a lot of discussions about vernacular architecture in Indonesia, known as “Arsitektur Nusantara”. From this issue, it is expected that more buildings in Indonesia are able to present designs that can transform the character of the past into something new without losing the essence of that character. In this case, the Javanese Traditional Architecture was chosen as a design method for Meeting Hall (Balai). Javanese traditional architecture is classified according to roof forms, one of which is Joglo. These forms are used for private house typology. So, the challenge was to transform the characteristics from a simple traditional house into a public space with a larger capacity and, of course, different functions. The first thing to do on transforming vernacular architecture is to identify the characteristics and the essential things about Javanese House. Then, find out what elements to keep and can be modified. Thus, we could find issues and make solutions from the research and precedents.

Design Concept The important thing in the spotlight on the Javanese house is its figure (called dhapur), which is displayed through the roof's shape (Joglo). The design tries to maintain the form of Joglo by infiltrating the structure so that it can accommodate its needs and functions as a meeting hall.

Furthermore, the space configuration in this hall also adapts a Javanese house in which there is a dalem or main room in the middle, and around it is a supporting area. Balai still maintaining the tradition of sektor guru, which is the column that is the center of the building's strength and the most important structure to produce the Joglo roof. However, the traditional rectangular structure of the sektor guru was modified by using an octagonal module to accommodate a large ballroom. This column module forms 3 layers of roof and still can produce a Joglo roof shape.

Space arrangement with a split level is a solution to make the body of the building proportional to the head or Joglo roof. The split levels is also prevent traffic flows that often happen in the ground floor. The building mass is formed in layers horizontally and vertically to emphasize a joglo roof with many layers. Meanwhile the building’s interior is made different from other meeting halls, which are usually closed, by dominantly using glass materials and providing voids. These elements is intended to make the building not merely solid but can be more integrated with nature.

Paradiso Hotel & Theme Park

Architecture Studio 4 | 2020 Supervisor : Septana Bagus Pribadi S.T.,M.T

The development of the hotel industry in Semarang City has been increasing over the last few years. Due to an increase in tourist attractions and the business sector, the number of visitors from outside the city also rapidly increases. Aside from being a stopover, a hotel also provides iconic tourist attractions so that visitors can get a new experience from their visit to the city. As a typology that requires high effectiveness in its room units, hotel buildings that are often encountered tend to have a massive mass and minimal green open space. However, green open space has an important role in the survival of living things and their nature. From this problem, a theme park is the right choice to collaborate with hotel buildings. For this project, we choose an art gallery and playrooms as the theme, which typology is still rarely found in Semarang. The hotel, park, and art gallery are expected to become an iconic new entertainment and make Semarang City more colorful, as well as a green open space provider.

The building's mass, both hotel and art gallery, have voids that function as inner courts. With the existence of green open space in the middle of the building, people will feel closer to nature and separate from the room that is limited by walls. The name of the hotel, PARADISO, indicates that the beauty of nature could bring people to another dimension, like heaven on earth. From this philosophy, the building also acts as a universe that accepts the four elements: light, air, wind, and living things. Another metaphor used in this design is the juxtaposition of forms, which means the place-

ment of two contrasting or different objects. In this case, what is related to this concept is a garden landscape that has a twisting pattern juxtaposed with a building mass that has corners and has a dominant grid element.

Storr Minimarket

Architecture Studio 2 | 2019 Supervisor : Dr. Eng. Bangun I. R. H. S.T.,M.T

Storr Minimarket is a convenience store that not just selling groceries but also providing fast foods and self-service drinks. The vision behind this project is to make every visitor feel convenient and effectively fulfilling their needs by analyzing the habits of Indonesian people, especially students in Semarang, as the design method. This mini market is located in Tembalang, Semarang City, which is known as a district of college students because there’s plenty of universities and schools. The site project has been researched to be categorized as a highly strategic street in Tembalang and has a prominent potential for store business. But there’s a critical site issue: the lack of green spaces because of the dominant room capacity needs. The green open spaces could’ve increased the relationship between humans & nature, as well as maintaining people’s well-being.

Academic Works Answering the lack of greens and vegetation on every minimarket in Indonesia, Storr Minimarket has a unique double facade made of an aluminum composite panel that acquires vertical rooms for plants and greenery. Based on the research and analysis of people habits in Semarang. It is proved that most of them are tend to hang out first after shopping at the minimarket. As a solution for that issue, Storr Minimarket provides rooms, indoor and outdoor, for people who’d like to sit around or talk to each other before leaving the minimarket.

Balé Srawung

Archevent UNS 2020 : The Abandoned Top 6

In Collaboration with Ghifari Abror Iswara & Framenti Cerecinda

As one of the most popular points in the Old City of Semarang, Hoogen dorp straat, now better known as Jalan Kepodang, presents various art deco architecture from the Dutch Colonial era. The idea to bring back the crowd to Jalan Kepodang, which was once famous as a business and trade district, is the main focus of this design. The condition of the existing buildings, most of which have been damaged and destroyed, makes revitalization the leading solution in the design of this creative hub. The process of adaptation to the old buildings that are still standing should be considered to maintain the historical value on its surrounding. This revitalization process also adds an element of new building mass to become the focal point of the design, that is, placemaking.

The idea for this project is to present a juxtaposition of forms that showed by the contrast of the new building with its surrounding. But to adapt to the historical and local context, we achieved the design through the abstraction of a joglo roof and using Batik Semarang’s pattern as the facade. This facade also acts as a passive design that allows cross ventilation system.

An-Nashr Mosque

MINIATUR Undip 2017 : Tomorrow Mosque Competition Entry In Collaboration with Naafian Maulana, Johanna Elisha, & Veandita Maelasari

A sacred space is an embodiment of architectural works that connects itself with God as the creator. The journey of the mosque architecture is quite long, the physical changes of the Mosque occur as a form of response to changes in society. Even so, therefore on the activities of prayer will not change. This project challenges us to predict how to answer the Mosque in 50 years and how the needs of sacred space for Muslims can stand in these conditions. An-Nashr Mosque is located in front of Bundaran Bubakan, Semarang that has a very strategic potential for Muslims to access. We predict in 50 years, this crossroad has a great crowd of people, so Muslims could easily access the Mosque. However, we found a problem that this site often gets flooded when it comes to rain.

Competition Works To answer the site’s problem that often gets flooded, the Mosque is designed with stilts and can be float when the flood came. Titanium is used as material for the “hull” because of its corrosion and high-temperature resistant. The shape was adapted from the shape of an egg because of its ability to float in saltwater. For its function that can be floating, this Mosque could save a great number of people from the flood. Therefore, it’s called An-Nashr Mosque that means “The Savior”.
