Worldwide economies are migrating to the digital realm, bringing with them a change in the model of urban infrastructure. Meanwhile, efforts to invest in and invent for a new paradigm to utilize these advances is underway. In the wake remains the physical vestiges of a obsolete, industrial era; large-scale facilities ripe for a new type of production. The Brooklyn Navy Yard, occupying prime East River real estate, sits at the forefront of this revitalization effort. Equipped with a concentration of industrial space, the organization is intent on rebranding itself from a naval construction and repair yard to a tech and light-manufacturing hub. No building serves a greater role in this metamorphosis than No. 77, a vehemoth of cast-concrete construction, totaling nearly 1 million square feet in leasable space. The Growery is a catalization of these opportunites. It rethinks the productiondistribution loop, and ushers in new forms of urban farming for products uniquely new in their handling; algae for the production of biofuel, and cannabis as America’s future cash crop. By exploiting the inherent capabilities of the building’s structural properties, and introducing a new form of demolition to selectively excavate portions of the existing framework, the two forms of growing are able to exist in harmony across the expansive floor plates. Through calibrated circulation loops, the produce is able to be grown, harvested, and transported by land, by sea, and by air.

Blurred Lines Lower East Side Light Laboratory Parsons Allied Studio In collaboration with Yuliya Savelyeva Instructors : David Leven, Derek Porter Fall 2013 Manhattan, NY, USA

Situated within the metropolis of New York, amidst the high density grid of streets, parks, and subway lines, the Lower East Side Light Laboratory is a respite from the urban milieu. It provides a passage. A manifestation of the developing need for increased light education and exploration, the LESlab is a physically permanent gallery cataloguing the qualities of natural light through an unrepeatable experience, uniquely altered with each passing minute of each day, as the light changes in depth, weather, and season. We began our design with a question: how can separate gallery and laboratory program be packed together within a tight, urban footprint? Experimentation yielded the concept of a dual-purpose “tube” that snakes through the building to capture light opportunities for ethereal display, simultaneously serving as primary mode of circulation and public exhibit. Each lateral shift of the tube engenders moments of reflection and repose, entry or exit. Each vertical rise provides unique visual displays of light play. Its movement disrupts the rectilinear slabs and their specific programmatic boundaries, carving away pieces of floor for increased sightlines and daylighting. Its heavy material quality of precast concrete serves as a juxtaposition against the light, steel structure and thin, fin envelope, the gradual oscillation of which both occludes and exposes the tube from various exterior vantage points while shading the interior.

Embedding the Tube The process of stitching the gallery from our imagined floor to floor heights, and across the width and depth of the site engendered the formalizing logic of the project itself; moments that capture, disperse, and display light from different directions through constructed apparatuses.


The Structural System Our scheme evolved out of a desire to keep columns and floor plates as light and thin as possible. The solution was a a set of vierendeel trusses cantilevered from two concrete cores, from which the floor plates hung below. Thermodeck precast panels were chosen to minimize depth of structure and ease of running MEP systems. Blurred Lines : Lower East Side Light Laboratory


Fuzzy Node The second tubular light condition employs fiber-optic rods embedded within poured concrete. The effect is a blanket of illuminated points across a dark expanse of solid material. As wind and cloud cover pass across the south facade of the building, the rods themselves reveal the exterior condition through different levels of brightness.

Expressing the Detail The clevis to Thermodeck relationship became a point of intrigue within the project. As the realities of construction altered initial conceptual agendas, we used the detailing as a way to compromise and enhance the quality of the overall form.

Over Under Velodrome Pavilion in Queens Parsons Comprehensive Studio Instructor : David J. Lewis Spring 2014 Queens, NY, USA

As the only competition bicycle race track in the greater New York metropolitan region, Kissena boasts a pristine surface and an attractive setting, nestled as it is against the woods of Corona Park and the residential streets of central Queens. What it lacks, however, is any amenities. A simple set of bleachers and a shipping container for bike storage constitute the only city investment in upgrades to this sporting institution, where national and international competition has occurred. To better serve the growing New York cycling community, the Over Under Pavilion provides an inhabitable threshold regulating access to the track, but not restricting it. As the new home for various trophies and records as well as cafe, storage, changing, mechanic, and observation space, its form is a derivation of the flows of various movement inside and above the structure, from human circulation via foot and bike, to water and sunlight. It sits low in the landscape in deference to the surrounding roofline of double-story, single family homes, yet announces its purpose through its sloping rooves and wide entrance. The Pavilion is also an exercise in timber construction and environmental form. Its composition relies on a combination of glulam beams and CLT panels with a Rhinezinc panel exoskeleton; its form is optimized for rainwater deflection and solar gain.

Explorative Models As a point of departure for the exploration of wood as primary construction medium, I studied the Minneapolis Rowing Club by Vincent James Architects, a glulam roof structure that creates a hyperbolic paraboloid through the simple and gradual rotation of the spanning king-post trusses.

Site Plan The location of the project separates the various modes of transportation by which visitors and competitors can enter both the building and the track. Approach by car provides access to two portals, one dipping below the building and into the central field, and the other passing through the building to the track edge. The long walking path from the street provides pedestrians a more natural entrance, through tree groves and landscaping.

Where the south facing facade is a closed shed, the north is an open viewport from which spectators have an elevated vantage of the race track beyond. Cyclists have direct access from the changing and mechanic rooms onto the racing platform, while the office punches through the skin to give direct sightlines onto the banked west turn. Flipped City NYCHA Housing in the Lower East Side Parsons Housing Studio In collaboration with Ayesha Ghosh Instructors : Andy Bernheimer, David Leven Spring 2013 Manhattan, NY, USA

Intent on debunking long held stigmas relating to the public housing block, we set forth an agenda to create a more interactive, socially charged “neighborhood� within the apartment building itself, using daylighting and views as a form of social equilizer across the entirety of the structure. Through examination of existing New York public housing, we developed a concern for the lack of shared space between inhabitants, a direct contributor to a lack of communal atmosphere and, arguable, to isolation and criminal activity, we posited. In response, we conceived of an articulated common space running from ground to roof that acts as a hive of activity for the tenants, and a nexus for communication and visibility. We selected a variety of programming to occupy each floor’s common space, providing an opportunity for connection between neighbors as they pass between spaces for cooking or reading, exercise or repose. At ground level, a public grocery mart provides locally sourced food while courts and community gardens are incorporated into the landscaping plan, thereby further connecting the inhabitants to their neighborhood at large. Siting the building to the south provides each tenant with a bright, airy apartment calibrated to the movement of the sun throughout the year, engendering a sense of social inclusion. Each room provides views, natural air movement and sunlight, the latter two passively controlled by an occupiable brise soleil.


Between Two Bridges The Alfred E. Smith NYCHA Housing development lies on the true north bank of the East River, nestled below the Brooklyn Bridge, adjacent to the FDR Drive, and just west of the Manhattan Bridge

HELIOcity A Solar Guide to a Northern Locale LEVENBETTS Summer 2014 East Lansing, MI, USA

HELIOcity posits a new way of planning cities and conceiving of architecture in direct integrated relation to the omnipresent movement of the sun and the carefully calibrated deployment of electric light. The dynamic nature of the sun, in this new scenario, productively and sustainably disrupts seemingly immutable urban and architectural organizational structures in order to sustain, collect and delight the inhabitants of a place. Seen through the lens of HELIOcity, East Lansing’s Michigan State University football stadium and the spectacle of the game is the paradigm of the collector, social and solar, that transcends the town/gown divide. Extending to the downtown, the HELIOcity university town is now reconsidered along the pedestrian alley running parallel and to the north of Grand River Avenue. A series of spaces and buildings along this linear collector are designed in deference to the daytime sun and provide for an inviting glow in the evening. This urban proposal was developed for East Lansing 2030, an exhibition at the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum in East Lansing Michigan.

San Francisco PUC Headquarters TomEliotFisch/KMD Architects Completed 2010 San Francisco, CA

The new Public Utilities Commission building is a 275,000 SF, 13-story highly sustainable office tower located in the San Francisco Civic Center. The structure establishes a benchmark for sustainability within the urban environment. Green strategies include high-performance building envelope, photovoltaic panels, wind turbines, and grey and blackwater recycling. The building is certified LEED Platinum. TEF developed and implemented the interiors package for the PUC, working collaboratively with KMD using Revit models for sequencing and construction documents. Besides working through the development of the entire CD package, my responsibilities lay in the 13th floor executive suite design, the entry cafe bar, and the Child Development Center.

White House Retrofit Installation for the Reach Higher Program Parsons School of Design Fall 2014 Washington, DC, USA

When the White House calls with a request to develop and install a redesign of the East Room of 1900 Pennsylvania Avenue for Michelle Obama’s Reach Higher initiative, in two weeks, you answer. Such was the challenge handed down to a select group of Parsons colleagues and me in the middle of our fall semester: create an innovative retofit for Mrs. Obama, her staff, high school participants in the program, and 20 of America’s top fashion designers. The event sought to encourage young people to pursue careers in fashion, and in her inspiring remarks Mrs. Obama stressed the critical role of fashion in the national economy, stating: “Fashion is about so much more than just a pretty pair of pumps or the perfect hemline. For so many people across the country, it is a calling, it is a career, and it’s a way they feed their families.” Using donated books and found materials, we developed sets of table centerpieces, mannequin scarves and headpieces, a hanging backdrop for the prestigious speakers (Anna Wintour, Diane Von Furstenberg, FLOTUS), napkin holders, and a podium, all to infuse the rather tame room with a bit of “elegance and modernity”, per the First Lady’s request.
