Wyndham City Stadium is a proposed 15,000seat purpose-built football stadium which will be built in Tarneit - west of Melbourne. The venue will be the future home of A-League expansion side, Western United FC, who joined the competition in 2019/20. The club has played its home games at various venues including GMHBA Stadium in Geelong and Mars Stadium in Ballarat.
Located 30km from Melbourne’s CBD, the $180 million facility will be privately-funded and the renders show a smaller version of the new Bankwest Stadium. Fans will be close to the action, including behind the goals, and the stands will be some of the steepest in Australia.
The Western United FC has reported that early site works have commenced on the precinct that’ll eventually house the 15,000-capacity Wyndham City Stadium.
The Western Melbourne Group, who are a parent company of Western United, reached the milestone in December 2021 when the first soil was finally turned on the 62-hectare site in Tarneit.
The construction team is now on-site, with heavy vehicles mobilised and in full swing, constructing the site’s haul road, which will provide access to the stadium site for construction vehicles. As well as Wyndham City Stadium, the site will also include a second 5,000-capacity stadium, a residential precinct with around 1,000 residences, and a commercial mixed-use development.
“This is a proud moment for WMG, the football club and the community who have been on this journey with us from the start,” WMG Chairman Jason Sourasis said. “I am delighted that the first earth-moving vehicles are on site, we’re on our way now. “Just to get to this point has been years of preparation and planning, and I’d like to thank our partner Wyndham City Council for their hard work and support.”
Western United CEO, Chris Pehlivanis said, “It’s fantastic that early works have commenced on the site, this is the biggest milestone for our Club to date.”
“I’m excited. Get ready, from here on in, there will be plenty of moments to celebrate as we watch the precinct come to life with those on the journey with us – our loyal members, partners, footballers, staff, volunteers and fans.”
