The challenge consists in designing a 100 meters high towermuseum, containing exhibition areas of 20th century fashion history and becoming a landmark for Omotesando Street. This avenue gathers the world’s most important fashion houses, at their maximum magnificence. These buildings have been designed by Japan and the world’s best architects. It is an incredible opportunity for the winning architect to gain professional acknowledgment at a potentially growing market, such as fashion house buildings in Tokyo.

This design is an research and study of having a project of lines instead of a project of surfaces. The super dense refers to the city context, the contrast between the building and the surrounding, the program and the challenge of how to create a space built by lines. Beyond the boundary of the structure, membranes or envelopes, this design merges them together while providing an efficient space in the dense of tokyo.

9 The thickens of the strings wall create an buffer space from the outside, it also support itself as well as the lateral force of the building and provide a column-free space for the museum. its not a surface, but it create an envelope by having a super dense pattern and hierarchies.

The strings system describes how the pattern transfer from the facade into the building and depar t the space. Also it shows a serial of variations in terms of scripting to generate different patterns. We used different methods to control it ranges from density, orientation, thickness or color. We could control the density or the thickness in order to create a pattern of more or less transparency or even a solid facade to response the environmental interaction.

11 06 06

2008

2009

We designed the way that the strings were generated and build the bounding box as a volume to contain the strings. The unpredictability of the scripting create va r i a t i o n s o f d e n s i t y i n certain area and some part of it just fade out and become the access between different spaces.

More particular for this project, it is more important to research how to apply the technique scriptingwield onto the integrated building rather than explore how the strings could operate architecturally.

Emergence — New Memorial for the Alishan Forestry When Architecture Meets Metaphor In this competition, the most critical challenge is to develop a new memorial prototype by melding architectural language with metaphysical elements.    The design process consists of tons of drawings, tests, and intense dialectics between the ideas of the metaphysics and the concrete science; the product means to invoke people’s memories of the forestry and of the mountain Alishan in Taiwan.

The Devaluated Site Although the site is located in a natural environment, it actually is a man-made plat plane by removing the trees and cutting the earth. In other words, it is fiercely separated from the environmental, historical, and functional context. Hence, we need to give back what it deserves: retrieving the original appearance of the mountain. This strategy is translated into a continuous skyline sloping up gradually in the section. Thus, the volume is determined.

The diamond form The next issue is the form, and the site has offered abundant clues to the possibilities. The coniferous trees are one of them. This dominate species in Alishan becomes a significant role in our study. Since the treestructure is a forming strategy favored by the domestic and foreign designers, we analysis the conifers branching rules, simplify them, and convert them into a basic geometric form: the diamond. It proves an essential element of the designing process. Applying the structural and constructive strategies to the diamond geometry, we furthermore obtain a conifer-structure unit that consists of a concrete foundation, a steel frame, and wood shutters. We configure the controlling geometric and parametric system that enables the transformation of the modular units, so each element could fit in the site and in the constructive process.

The diamond geometry is carried through 01 to the landscape design, too. According to the height of the base that supports the sculpture, we create a continuous to p o g r a p hy fo r t h e d i s a b l e d p e o p l e . Moreover, the circulation system of the site is considered, and the street benches, which also reflect the idea of the diamond, become parts of the topographical design that define the interface between the parking lots and the walk way. In a word, the geometry integrates the site planning and the architectural design as a whole.

22

01 plan

01

The Rail Landscape We arrange the configuration of the lighting system, so it looks like the leave veins that imply the curving pattern of the railways. The deeper the lights go into the site, the more the numbers of the branching. Finally, the lights converge together around the sculpture and the post and the machine of the mobile cable systems, which harvested the timbers in the old days. The lightings/ railways extend into the site and turn into the conifer structural system, and it infers the connection of the artificial and the natural.

E rysiphales have supercial mycelium which extracts nourishment from the host plant through specialized hyphae that penetrate the epidermal cells of the host by means of absorbing organs called haustoria.

The infection of the host plant begins with the sexual ascospores, or the asexual conidia germinating on the surface of the plants leaf or stem, resulting in septate mycelium of uninucleate cells.

In most powdery mildews only the epidermal cells are attacked. The external mycelium gives rise to short, erect conidiophores, each of which bearing a single row of barrelshaped spores, the youngest being at the base.

2002–2010 ARCHITECTURE DESIGN PORTFOLIO SHENG-PING LIN (ASTOR LIN) Mildew refers to a special kind of fungus. Its spore has the mobility to float by wind. Besides, it is able to duplicate and double its body structure. Mildew can thrive on hosts that it attaches. It uses its tentacle to connect with the host and then becomes part of its host. The research and model here is based on the unique feature of mildew spore proliferation to develop a distinct primitive unit. This unit is broken into two cells:

Our team is composed of five members, each of us is taking care of one of the critical elements of a city.

01 Future city image 02 Los angeles downtown 03 put sky-train in downtown 04 connection each station

02

The five elements in urban are infrastructure, residence area, office area, parks, and culture space. I am in charge of infrastructure planning: design public transportation system. Los Angeles is overly spread out. How can the city deal with the coming issues like the large amount of immigrants moving into downtown, the lack of energy and resources, and the crowed public space in the city.

2002–2010 ARCHITECTURE DESIGN PORTFOLIO SHENG-PING LIN (ASTOR LIN) The solution we proposed is a vertical city plan: a multi-layered and webwoven transportation network.

05

The existing buildings in the city are the hosts of the new transportation system. Train stations are installed in the intersections.

37

Except for the current existing transportation system, we also develop a new non-stopping circular line within that existing system. The new city-wide transportation system not only provides people with a much faster way to commute but also provides residents a more convenient life. Each building is connected with each other by the continually extending unit cells.

The interior of each building to some extend connects with each other and becomes part of the space in the city. When the unit cell attaches to the building, its body structure extends into the interior of the building. The floor where the unit attaches becomes the lobby of train station.

People have their own maps in their mind, no matter who. Many different characters exist. City, the hardware, need people, the software, to motivate its function and potentiality. Everyone has different background and different opinion.Of course, everyone faces the city with different attitudes. How to define those characters and connect together into a story is the main issue in my design. A research without clear definition. Also the grey area involved with urban, people, street and nature.

Different colors and lights in different levels influence the stress we bear in mind. The changes are equal to the various scales of alley and lanes. In different time, nature and artificial lights reflect different character even in the same location. People live in this multidimensional environment In their mind, the multiple characters of soul are accrued. The site is around Linsen North Road, also called Rokujyoudoo( the sixth avenue), kept with Japanese street character in Taipei.

2002–2010 ARCHITECTURE DESIGN PORTFOLIO SHENG-PING LIN (ASTOR LIN) In this design, a new urban strategy is brought up.The design strategy is a object to connect present and future, tradition and digital. We connected activities and events happened around Taichung,Green belts, axes and activities, through the idea of merging inside and outside from Klein bottle, all connects into this site to form a border less design concept.

74

Greenery and vast space is our very first thought upon the site, which is also the focus of its spatiality. Moreover, we have observed how the inhabitants of the everpaced city would seek for retreat in the green, pausing to unwind oneself. We would hate to relinquish this gift by nature; Thus, we formed the Library in the shape of L to revolve around the greenery and guide the passers/nature into the embrace of knowledge.

These we r e t h e n i n te g r a te d with the bands of foliage guided from the roads along the site. The visitors can now stroll along the field, where bands of foliage flow into the park and they ripple around the mounds like water around stones.

Manifold Tectonics asks a high leval of engagement in the design and fabrication of cells on minmal surfaces, nonstandand surfaces. Muqarnas, highly intricate and ornate I s l a m i c a r c h i te c t u r e , present parameters of scale, texture and depth, and coloration and tone with a rational take on the distribution of geometry and form. For these reasons, they were studied as a precedent, andin order to be able to generate our own system of parameters and logic of economy to the final installation. The final construct is comprised of 5 component units. The form of each was informed by the fabrication and assembly processes, and allowed the units to be configured in a variety of combinations using simple transformations of rotate, scale and mirror. This allowed us to achieve maximum variation while maintaining a system of economy

The final production process utilized the combined processes of CNC milling and vacuum forming. High desity form was milled to form the positive model of each component type, which was then taken and vacuum formed to creat PETG units. Total mill time was estimated at 10 man hours.

Initial prototopes utilized acrylic, fabric, and metal. Ultimately PETG was used for it's strength and ability to mould to our desried forms,as well as for the ease in cutting after the forming process.PETG is a really available material and was deemed to be more cost-effective,relative to other plastics such as ABS. The choice of form for the form bases was decided on by its ease of manufacturing with the CNC mill for the scale we wanted, and also because the material was readily available from the Sci-Arc union.
