General Activities

The work in the existing sections has increased now that the project is fully staffed, with the only exception being the car valeting which has fallen foul of the bad weather during November and December. Astrid has now been inducted at the Edenfield Centre after receipt of her CRB clearance and we have seen an increase in the number of work sessions in Graphic Design as the work demand has increased. During this period the workforce in this section worked over 171 hours in total.

We have focused more on obtaining training opportunities and accompanying funding, which in the main has been very successful, however we are unable to pursue the ITQ level 3 qualifications, as we are unable to secure funding. However, we are still working on this and other

During the coming period we will implement our plan for the development of the graphic design section having now put together a comprehensive business plan to expand our client base and work demand. This will give us a greater opportunity to build and develop

During this period the project at Charles House has gained real momentum and we are working hard to implement the programme outlined in the action plan.

The Snack Bar has been operating regularly during this period with some sessions steady whilst others have been extremely busy and this has accounted for over 140 hours of work experience in the catering section of the project. With the painting and decorating contract we have with Greater Manchester West we have worked a terrific 60 hours of painting and decorating at The Moorside unit (Trafford General) and The Woodlands Hospital (Little Hulton). This contributed greatly to 1 workforce member’s NVQ level 2 in painting & decorating, which has been completed. There is work scheduled for January and February on the Prestwich site, which will enable more workforce to be gain valuable work experience in a completely different environment. As always the existing work sections are supported by the project’s office administration section and this also is giving valuable work experience in a typical office environment. Over the year this section has provided the opportunity a number of opportunities for workforce to gain an NVQ level 2 in Business Administration. During this period the workforce have been engaged in approximately 300 hours of regular work.

The experience I have had while doing painting & decorating with FST are all positive. I have learned a lot of things about working on jobs, planning and organising work, how to set up a room prior to painting it and how to use different tools and equipment on the job properly. All of this has improved my confidence in doing the work itself and working with other people. It made me feel part of a team taking and giving feedback about my work. Getting out and doing a structured working day has made me feel much better and knowing this work has helped me get an NVQ in painting & decorating.

NB – Newland ward

for providing an English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) course to meet the needs of this and similar men within Charles House, so has initiated discussions to provide this course to the men as soon as this can be made available.

FST has a regular presence at the fortnightly recovery steering group meetings, which began 4th October 2010, and are using this forum to manage and monitor the implementation and development of the project.

Laura has now completed her Preparing to teach in the lifelong learning sector (PTTLs) course. Following this, she has enrolled onto and successfully completed her Level II English course, and is in the process of completing her Level II qualification in Maths which will award her the overall PTTLs qualification. The PTTLs qualification will enable Laura to directly deliver suitable accredited training to the men.

We held an open day at Charles House on 5th November 2010, aimed at promoting awareness of the opportunities available from FST to the men and staff within Charles House and build on our relationships at the project. This initial event was not as successful as would have been liked, however, similar less formal open days over the following week on each of the wards were much more successful, and managed to gain good interest. From this, we gained 3 immediate applications from the men we spoke to, and identified interest from several others.

The referral and weekly diary programme procedures have been agreed and are working well, with Laura and Jordy Hirst, Charles House OT, co-ordinating this.

workforce in this section. We will also, run a promotion on the car valeting service, as we are getting a number of patients wanting to join FST in order to gain work experience in car valeting. There are plans to move the existing Edenfield Café to the link corridor and we have been invited to discuss with the Deputy Matron plans for how we can continue to operate the FST Snack Bar. n

Statistics for FST Salford Project overleaf

We have arranged for an escorted external work placement opportunity within FST SMaRT has been taken up by one man from Charles House to date, which is due to begin in mid January subject to leave allowance remaining suitable. This opportunity will also be made available to all other suitable men who hold adequate leave to enable them to attend. n

We had a good start to the year in quarter 1 with training and development of the workforce and continued on from where we left off at the end of last year. One of the workforce at the Edenfield is still attending FST SMaRT 4 days a week and developing his work skills in the garage. To support this excellent work, he has now completed his initial assessment work and been allocated an NVQ assessor. We are expecting him to start his initial session with the assessor mid Aug 2011.

We have had a meeting with GMW Trust Communications Manager, Caroline Vining to discuss the opportunity of FST quoting for some work in the near future. We ran the planned car valeting promotion aimed at the Edenfield OT department giving them £2.50 off bookings made throughout the month of June. Unfortunately, the response was not as good as anticipated. We are planning to renew all of the car valeting marketing literature at the Edenfield and wider Prestwich site, and introduce a ‘Loyalty Scheme’ for regular car valet customers.

We now have a member of the workforce progressing on to Adult Learning level 2 having successfully completed level 1. In addition, we have another member of the workforce who has completed the initial analysis for Adult Learning in English and is looking to progress on to the level 1 English qualification around mid August 2011. All three workforce on the Adult Learning basic skills have successfuly completed their various courses and all have been accredited. Together with these, we had three workforce attending the eDCC computer skills course, two at the intermediate level (One covering MS Word and the other MS Excel) and one at beginner level covering MS Word. All three successfully

During this period we were presented with the schedule of painting works required on the GMW sites from facilities management. All of the sites have now been surveyed and costed accordingly, and is now back with facilities awaiting authorisation. The

Qualifications/Training

We are still working through our marketing plan and have a number of leads to follow up and we have written directly to Hazel Blears, following comments made by her at the CAB 25th Anniversary celebration which FST also attended.

Work Activities

Since November 2010, FST has engaged the services of a qualified Maths tutor (Mark Lamont) from a local college to work alongside her in delivering basic skills Maths courses to the men. Laura has held initial competency assessments with four of the men to date and we currently have 3 men attending the basic skills Maths courses. A further 2 men are pending at present.

work will take us through to the end of the current financial year and will create a number of opportunities for workforce to gain valuable work experience and opportunities to gain NVQ level 2 in painting & decorating. During this period the workforce have been involved in all of the above work sections which has accounted for almost 1300 hours of work experience.

The work sections are working well although towards the end of this period we have experienced workforce staffing issues and functional problems in the café area at the Edenfield, which resulted in a few snack bar sessions being cancelled. As a result of the recent recruitment drive we have two new workforce ready to join this section once approval is granted. The graphic design section continues to make progress and there have been a number of new jobs successfully bid for, one of which will be regular work for a German magazine.

FST were unfortunately delayed in appointing the position of Assistant Manager for Charles House, a role which will be shared with FST Salford. I am however pleased to report that following a second round of interviews FST have appointed Terry Schofield to the post, a qualified and experienced painter & decorator with additional skills and attributes suitable for the post. Terry’s employment will begin on 14th February 2011. This delay, coupled with the poor weather conditions and availability of men with non secure area leave has delayed the start of the gardening works.

Vocationally orientated training opportunities

possible alternatives. We held a Health & Safety at work course through the British Safety Council, which four workforce attended and two of the four successfully gained the qualification. We have been able to provide sufficient work in painting & decorating to enable one workforce member to complete an NVQ Level 2. During this period we have successfully started two workforce on an NVQ Level 2 in Business Administration and four are now currently working through a basic skills course in Maths.

activities alongside Chris Kirkman within Charles house each week from January prior to his employment start date, which should assist in making up for some of the time lost during the delay. Terry will begin his FST induction once his direct employment date arrives. We aim to have the gardening work section sessions within the courtyard area available from March 2010.

Project Summary FST @ Charles House completed the course and certificates will be issued in the next couple of weeks. We have completed a British Safety Council Level 1 Health & Safety in the Workplace for four workforce at the Edenfield, 3 of which took the exam and achieved accreditation.

New developments After being asked to provide the service of a small shop at the Edenfield we set about the task to find out what our products our customers would buy. We produced a questionnaire, which was designed by one of the design workforce and visited all the wards to talk to patients and staff about our new venture. We had a fantastic response by receiving almost 100 completed questionnaires. We are in the process of collating the data, which will then give us the basis of a proposed stock list. The initial drawings have been given to the Edenfield management and it is planned for an open discussion to include FST to finalise the work requirements. Once submitted, work on the existing area can be started. At this stage there is no confirmed opening date, but we are hopeful it will be fully operational around autumn this year.

Existing work sections

Attending FST has been a really postive experience. Attending the project has helped me gain good work skills such as punctuality and attendance. I feel more confident as a person and feel my social skills have improved a lot. Over the last three years I have gained qualifications such as my NVQ Level Two in Office Admin, my Food Hygiene Level Two and my Health & Safety Level One certificate. I think the project helpd people prepare for work when they leave hospital and I would recommend people to give it a try.

AMo – Edenfield

In order to maximise the opportunity of painting work experience, we made contact with Newland, Rockley House and Ullswater/Keswick ward managers to organise a special recruitment drive, aimed at becoming involved in the painting works. n

Both painting & decoration and gardening work sections are continuing to develop. Painting & decorating continues to regularly engage a number of our workforce and has provided approximately 50 hours of work experience over this period. Recently, the Charles House management had requested a small job to be done after a picture was removed from the wall. The painting work was completed by two workforce members under the supervision of Terry. The feedback received from Charles House management was very encouraging, stating that the men worked in a professional manner, and were impressed with how well the two patients worked together, giving it a ‘Real’ work atmosphere. The gardening section has grown from the small area we had at the start of Q4 period to now having four fully operating beds and a small greenhouse. From this humble start, we are now producing a crop consisting of: Potatoes, Radishes, Strawberries, Tomatoes, Swede and Peas. This work section is regularly engaging two workforce in garden preparation and maintenance. The produce is now beginning to flourish and we have already supplied samples to the kitchen at Charles House, with a view to this developing into a business partnership.

Vocational orientated training and qualifications. During this period we have had good successes in the number of sessions and qualifications achieved. We continue to provide the opportunities for Adult Numeracy and Literacy at level 1-3, together with eDCC beginners and intermediate levels for computer competency with all

seven workforce members working towards one or more of these qualifications. This has accounted for 72 hours of vocational and educational engagement. Two of the workforce are planning to take exams before September for Level 1 Adult Literacy and Level 2 Adult Numeracy respectively. We have held a British Safety Council Level 1 Health & Safety in the workplace for three workforce. One of the three candidates successfully gained the qualification, one other missed out by only four marks. Laura’s PTTLs certificate has been forwarded to be accredited which will enable Laura to directly deliver basic skills qualifications.

New developments We are continuing to develop our partnership at Charles House, contributing to the Therapeutic Action Group (TAG) monthly meetings. We will be producing supplies for the Charles House kitchen over the coming months and during late autumn, we will discuss with the kitchen manager opportunities for produce for the following year. In addition, Charles House are still keen to introducing a car valet service at Charles House for staff and visitors.

‘I enjoy my Painting & Decorating and Maths sessions, I feel good about myself when I attend because I feel pround of what I have achieved. Attending the painting sessions enables me to learn new practical skills and attending my maths sessions helps improve my maths skills which is a personal challenge JL – Charles House

FST SMaRT have offered opportunities for ‘Staff Tours’ to show the staff at Charles House what is being offered in terms of work experience and how this can benefit service users at Charles House. There is also some planning in place for Charles House to hold a staff-training day, primarily to cover ‘Recovery Star’ data collection, asking FST to be part of this training to illustrate how FST can contribute to documentation of service user recovery. n

CQUIN Feedback Quarterly Summary Workforce

Existing work sections

number of jobs that providing more real work opportunities for the team. As a result of a successful trial in the design and production of a range of FST SMaRT Design & Print greetings cards, which are sold through the onsite FST SMaRT Shop, has presented the team with a great opportunity for the workforce to manage the whole process with very little input from FST managers. This section continues to regularly provide work experience and skills development and to date has provided 420 hours of work experience.

Over the quarter 2 period we continued to provide opportunities in all work sections, whilst supporting them with a number of vocational education opportunities. During June and July the painting work at the Edenfield continued and completed all the agreed work with the exception of one ward area that needed major repair work before being painted. This repair work is still outstanding, so we were unable to complete work in this area, but this will be done on completion of the repair work. August saw a significant drop in the painting work as all jobs were completed early in the month, but this gave the workers time to work on their NVQ course work. We are looking forward to continuing to develop this work section, which has already generated a keen interest from other patients who are not already at FST having seen the team working on many wards. To date the painting section has provided more than 500 hours of work experience.

The SMaRT Shop continues to flourish in terms of popularity and workforce development and from its initial opening toward the end of quarter 1 period it now operates three times weekly, Monday and Friday 3:00 - 5:00pm and Wednesday 6:00 - 8:00pm. We are still in the process of consolidating the range of stock sold and make a concerted effort to offer healthy alternatives for those customers who wish to take up that option. We currently have a regular and reliable team of 5 workers in this section and all are showing a marked improvement on their customer service, cash handling and stock accountability skills. Each session runs very well and is a pleasure to be part of. It creates a really friendly, welcoming and approachable shop atmosphere, where we feel our customers like to come. We are still looking into how we can provide this service to the acute wards, where the majority of patients don’t have leave off the ward.

The design section likewise continues to provide steady and regular work opportunities and the team has a new member who has fit in right away in terms of work ethic and the skills he has to offer. From this small team of four, three of them are making very good progress with their NVQ in PrePress for Print, which includes Digital Artwork as an optional unit. The assessor from Manchester College has commented on more than one occasion on the high level of detail and quality of all three students and is so impressed with their commitment and dedication. We have continued to work closely with the management team at the Edenfield, which has resulted in the commissioning of various design and print publication. This added to the steadily increasing

Since opening the SMaRT shop in May 2012 to the end of quarter 2 period we have provided 225 hours of work experience. The car valeting section is becoming more regular of late and we are aiming to hold at least one valeting

session every week, depending on the weather. We now have an almost completely new team in this section, but as in the other sections, the team have shown how rapidly they can learn new skills or pick up and improve on skills they already hold. We are hoping that as the bad weather of winter approaches, cars get dirty quicker and therefore increases the opportunity for valeting. Whilst over quarter 1 and 2 the number of work experience hours have not been as good as previous years, we will be promoting this service over the latter half of the year in order to gain a better balance across all the sections. As always the office administration team supports all of the work sections at the project and due to some of the team working in this section having now been discharged from the Edenfield Centre, we have been busy recruiting replacements. This took longer than we had expected, but we now have a number of patients wanting to work at FST in the office administration section. During quarter 1 and 2 periods we have provided over 350 hours of work experience in General Administration, Finance, Cash Handling, Cash Takings reconciling, and using office equipment.

Qualifications/Training During this period we continue with the on-going progression of 5 workforce on their NVQ level 2 qualifications in painting & decorating and pre-press for print. These we are expecting completion in the next 3 months, so although they are not counted in the number of qualifications achieved, we fully expect them all to achieve success.

During this period one of our workforce successfully gained the adult literacy qualification. During the next period we have arranged to hold a number of courses around health & safety and eDCC computer user course.

I would like to extend my thanks for your support in delivering the Qualification. Despite the restrictions for myself as an assessor with the evidence types, I have found it one of the easiest environments to assess students. This is due to the support you give the candidates and the candidates training that is given in the workplace.

New developments Further to the agreed points from the last review meeting Ken has held a meeting with Shirley Wheeler and Jenny McVinnie from the Edenfield Management Team, to discuss opportunities for FST to expand the work areas and provide services to the patients that are proving a challenge for the Edenfield Centre to provide on a regular basis. We agreed that FST would look at in some detail the provision of a hairdressing service for the men and women at the Edenfield Centre and operate this as an FST work section that could involve patients working with FST.

I have been very impressed with all the candidates on the program, their knowledge of design and their skills to execute the ideas is very of a high standardand, comparable with others in the industry with their level of experince. The assignment that have been completed so far are some of the best I have seen from candidates on the program at present.

We also discussed the possibility of FST being accessed by patients from LSS at Prestwich and agreed that FST would need some detail on what GMW is looking to provide access to and what are the needs of those patient groups in LSS. We felt that simply accessing the current FST work sections would simply result in less opportunities for patients at the Edenfield Centre and therefore we need to set up something separate for LSS patients.

It is very rewarding to be part of their development and everyone at the trust creates a very friendly atmosphere, which leads to quality learning.

Having had discussions with John Walker regarding additional work at the Edenfield Centre, Ken will meet with John early November to review the opportunities and how we can work in partnership to deliver the a solution to providing work experience opportunities in painting & decorating and possible minor maintenance work on the unit. n

Painting work is continuing to provide regular work sessions and we have now recruited a replacement for one of the workforce from the painting team, who has now been discharged from Charles House, which I’m sure has been as a result of his regular sessions with FST. As reported in quarter 1 report, one of the painting team has now started on an NVQ Level 2 in painting & decorating. He is showing good progress in both the practical & knowledge elements of this qualification. Early

estimations indicate that he should finish this qualification by the middle of 2013. During this period we have provided 30 hours of work experience, which takes us to a total of 60 hours work experience in painting & decorating from the start of the current year.

Qualifications/Training Wecurrently have 3 workforce on adult numeracy and literacy courses, and are all making good progress to the preparation of achieving a qualification. We also have one member of the workforce part way through an NVQ level 2 in painting & decorating and this we estimate completion before the end of March 2013.

Following internal discussions regarding the start of an alternative work section to the garden produce work section that was tried last year, we are looking at work sections that can be accessed internally, rather than externally that would require external leave. Charles House currently has a contractor that provides an external and internal window cleaning service and following an initial discussion with the Charles House management, we are working on how we can deliver the internal part of this contract and we will formally present our proposition to Charles House early November.. n

We are pleased to report that the SMaRT Shop at Charles House is proving very popular with the patients from both wards. From the initial opening in May 2012 it started how it has continued throughout each of the two weekly sessions, to be extremely busy. As with the SMaRT Shop based at the Edenfield Centre, it provides the opportunity for patients working with FST to experience the real work environment of a busy shop. They are able to gain new or improve skills in customer service, cash handling, stock management and stock control and have achieved over 100 hours of work experience to the end of quarter 2 period. In response to the success and popularity of the SMaRT shop, we have been asked if we could open at weekends. Having considered all the benefits and disadvantages of opening at weekend we agreed that at present it isn’t practical for us to open over the weekend because logistically it would result in other sessions throughout the week suffering. So as an alternative, we agreed to open three times weekly for a trial period of one month before making a final decision.
