Endorsements I had the terrific pleasure of visiting First Step Trust and its SMaRT garage in Woolwich last week and the memory of that occasion will stay with me forever. The sheer professionalism of the garage and its commitment to customer service was really impressive but, most of all, their total dedication to helping people with mental health problems was truly moving and inspirational. I spent quite a long time talking to people who were being helped to come back into full time employment and I was blown away by their optimism and confidence. All of them were unequivocal that it was the help and support of First Step Trust that had enabled them to think positively about the future and the great work this organisation is doing is palpable for anyone who takes the time to visit or take their car in for service. I, like many others, had a period in my life where overwhelming stress had caused me to suffer from mental health problems and I know how difficult it is to rise above these and return to normal life. I only wish I had encountered First Step Trust and the SMaRT garage group in those days. I wholeheartedly endorse the work of SMaRT and wish them every success in the future.

Executive Chair Endorses SMaRT Women IMI’s manifesto sets out a number of challenges to the motor trade and is determined to change public perception of the industry through the promotion of excellence throughout the sector. I had this in mind when I visited the SMaRT Garage in Woolwich in June. SMaRT stands for Socially Minded and Responsible Trading™ and is intended to convey First Step Trust’s (FST) commitment to its customers and the people who are involved at all levels of the organisation. FST has set up SMaRT Garages in Salford, Lambeth and Woolwich and is in the process of setting up another in Bexley. My colleague, Nesta Job, had previously visited the Woolwich Garage and was impressed by FST’s ability to deliver a first rate service to its customers. The SMaRT garage in Woolwich is staffed by two full-time technicians and a volunteer workforce of people looking for the chance to overcome mental health problems and other disadvantages. The vast majority of the people supported by FST are unable to access mainstream employment but this hasn’t prevented them from achieving great things. One young man has recently completed his first year at Greenwich Community College (GCC) gaining a pass rate of 96% in Light Vehicle Mechanics Level 1. Two of the young women have been sufficiently motivated by the quality of training to register themselves with GCC for the next intake in September. At the end of my tour of the garage and training facilities I was invited to sit in on a SMaRT Women training session. The SMaRT Women programme provides training to enable women to undertake a series of basic maintenance and safety checks e.g. oil tyre pressure and condition. The course is run “by women for women” and involved a 15-minute training session backed up with another 45 minutes in the garage with one to one assistance to do the checks on their own car. I was impressed with SMaRT Women and felt that the programme highlights FST’s commitment to improving public perception of the industry. Following my visit, I am prepared to endorse SMaRT Garage and the SMaRT Women programme.

Abbevilles Restaurant, Clapham

Outside Catering Abbevilles provides freshly prepared food for a wide range of functions from meetings, conferences and other corporate events to private parties.

Open Monday to Friday, 11.30 am with last orders at 3.30 pm. This local eatery offers a modern European menu from three course lunches to light bites and sandwiches using fresh quality produce. We are licensed for beer, wine and spirits.

We can cater for orders of between 10-400 people and are available for events between Monday to Friday and by arrangement at weekends. We deliver to your door and, if required, set out the food on location. We have our own refrigerated van to keep your orders fresh.

An ideal venue for your meeting With capacity for up to 40 people, Abbevilles is an informal and flexible venue suitable for one to one meetings or for larger groups. Abbevilles has hosted a range of events from breakfast briefings to business lunches and office parties. For small meetings the venue is free of charge, you simply pay for any food or drink you order. For bookings over a certain number, call Abbevilles to discuss.

In the current climate we know budgets are tight and we aim to provide excellent value for money.
