There are certain rules that you must follow while offering your prayers to Lord Shiva, especially during the mo nth of Sawan. Sawan and Lord Shiva In the Sanatan Dharm a certain day, a week or a month is generally dedicated to the Gods and Goddesses. Thus the entire month of Sawan is Lord Shiva’s month. Lord Shiva is the God of all Gods and prevails over the entire universe. Mahabharata has the reference that Lord Shiva drank all the poison in order to save the entire universe. What is the Significance? After drinking the poison Lord Shiva’s body temperature started to rise steadily and he became more and more restless. All the other Gods tried to bring down his body temperature but no effort produced results. Finally Lord Shiva himself held the Moon, the elixir, on his forehead which lowered down the body temperature. As Lord Shiva’s body temperature rose steadily after consuming the poison to save all the creatures on earth, even today products that have a cooling effect are offered to the Lord, out of thankfulness, faith and respect. It is said that Shiva became restless as his temperature rose considerably due to the effect of poison in the body. Every God tried to bring down Shiva’s body temperature to the normal but nothing seemed to help. At last, he held an elixir like Moon on his forehead which provided Lord Shiva the required coolness. In another form, Rudra, the destroyer avatar of Lord Shiva, denotes fire. In normal life humans are faced with different kinds of fires like mental stress, financial problems, enemies and diseases. These problems have been bothering people for ages. All sorts of sufferings that humans have to face are like Rudra, they ultimate destruction. There is no steadfast rule of worshipping Lord Shiva, neither is there any special procedure for the Puja. You can easily perform the rituals with simple things at a very small expense. Shankaracharya, the ancient Hindu religious guru also explained the process of Manas Puja. The main feature of Manas Puja is that you have to believe in the worship from inside. The worldly offerings are not necessary if your heart is pious enough to worship the God. The Things loved by Lord Shiva Lord Shiva is fond of Ganga Jal. This is largely because Ganga played in important part in cooling him down when his body temperature was steadily increasing. Hence Shiva Puja with Gangal Jal is the ultimate offering you can make to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva is also very fond of bael leaves. Bholenath loves these two things more than anything else and so all you need to do is to offer Ganga Jal and bael leaves to the Lord. The mantra “Om Namah Shivaye” can be chanted while rinsing the Shivling with Ganga Jal. You can also blend cow milk, ghee, sandalwood, honey and bael leaves with the Ganga Jal and make your offering. Make sure that the bael leaves are pure. Auspicious day As the entire month of Sawan is dedicated to lord Shiva there is no specific day for the Puja. But, as Shiva and Moon are close to each other it is opined that offering prayers on Monday is most auspicious. Monday is the day of the Moon. Muhurat (auspicious time) There is no specific time for offering prayers to Lord Shiva. However, those who want to perform special rituals like the Rudra Avishek, Maha Mrityunjaya and Rudra Path it is advisable to fix a particular day and time of the month. These rituals can be performed anytime during the month of Sawan. If you want to chant a Mantra to please Lord Shiva, “Om Namah Shivaya” can be good for you. However, for those who know Rudra Gayatri, the mantra is "ॐ , , " You can also chant " ॐ ,
…… " or Tulsi Das’ Rudra Ashtkam which says " .......... "
