2012 Volleyball Season Preview As the Alabama State volleyball season unfolds, the team will look to make a mark in history. In its second season under the direction of Head Coach Penny Lucas-White, the Lady Hornets will look to improve last season’s record of 15-21. Youth will be a watchful word to describe the 2012 Alabama State Lady Hornets. Lucas-White will certainly have a task at hand returning only four players from last year’s squad, one of which was a starter. “This team will be like starting all over for me, like this will be my first year,” said Lucas-White. It’s a new team because we have four returners and 12 new players. With that being said, I am excited about the upcoming season and looking forward to a great and phenomenal year.” Although the Lady Hornets are returning only four players, this does not diminish their confidence heading into the 2012 preseason. Lucas-White noted that the ladies goals are to compete even with the tough schedule that they have ahead of them. The four veterans are joined by seven incoming freshman, two sophomores and one junior college transfer. With these 14 players, the Lady Hornets are looking to be very competitive in not only the non-conference play, but also in SWAC matches. “As I stated before, our overall goal is to compete,” said Lucas-White. We have a tough schedule ahead of us, and our preseason will be to compete and get ready for our conference games. I would be remised to say that our desire is to just win SWAC, but we want go to the big dance.” The four returning players bring outstanding experience to the court. Angelica Gillespie, Luiza Griz, Ericka Thompson and Alex Chace will definitely be looked at the lead this team where Coach Lucas-White would like for them to go. The lone senior, Angelica Gillespie, who transferred from Southern Union College last season, will bring a wealth of experience to the front line. The Ashville, Ala. native will be
4
holding down the middle blocker position, as this will be the first season that she will actually see the court. The senior sat out last season due to an injury. Junior Luiza Griz will hold the libero spot for the Lady Hornets. She led the team in digs last season, averaging 4.89 per game. “Luiza is a great passer, “Lucas-White said. She will be able to lead on the floor as well as off. She’s going to be an outstanding leader, especially with us being young on the court.” Sophomore Erica Thompson will play multiple positions. She will see action as both an outside hitter and possible a setter when needed. “Erica will be another great leader for us,” said Lucas-White. I am so excited we took Erica and turned her into a setter. She has great hands and she can also hit. She does a phenomenal job academically. She is a student before an athlete.” Chace, another sophomore that saw time as a middle blocker due to her leaping abilities, she also played as an outside hitter. As a returning player, we expect her to set the tone for the hitters noted Lucas-White. “This year’s team will not only offer us height, but a lot of depth this year,” said Lucas-White. “This is something that we didn’t have last year, we have more seasoned players that are not just athletes, but student athletes. I want this team to have the highest GPA on this campus and let the court be secondary.” Presidential scholar Brooke Beasley will be one of the players to follow. Beasley came to Alabama State on a Presidential scholarship. The six-foot transfer from Wallace State-Hanceville will be the primary setter for the Lady Hornets. The Winfield, Ala. native received honors on the First Team All-Region Alabama Community College Conference team, as well as the NJCAA National Tournament team at WSH they placed 12th overall. Beasley was selected as the MVP of the All Tournament Team and First Team All-Region. Beasley also took

2012HornetVolleyball her team to the sweet 16 in 2011. Not only can Beasley set she can hit and is a legitimate right side hitter. She can play as a setter and a two hitter noted White. Anniiya Robinson, also will be taking on the task of setter for the Lady Hornets. The 5’-10” Phoenix, Ariz. freshmen will have multiple duties on the court. She will set and double as a hitter. The Lady Hornets will expect to run a 6-2 when Robinson is on the floor. Robinson earned a spot on the 2012 Junior Nationals squad and was on the 2012 National Championship bid for the Arizona Region. She also was voted as her high school’s top hitter. The middle blocking position will primarily be filled by freshmen Myla Marshall and Amber Bennett. Also looking to compete for playing time in the middle will be junior college transfer Latoya Ellington from Gadsden State Community College. Marshall, the 6’-0” Memphis, Tenn. native, is quick and explosive she led her Houston High School teammates with a .358 kill per game average, tallying 404 kills her senior year. The District 15 MVP and All-Region athlete was selected to the 2011-12 Best of the Preps team. Marshall also was a part of her high school’s District 15 and Region 8 Championships. Bennett, who touches over 10 feet, will be expected to take the Lady Hornets to another level. She is 6’-1”and hails from Baton Rouge, La. where she was selected to the All State Metro Team. She was voted MVP of district four, and tallied 309 kills, 100 digs, 88 blocks and 33 aces during her senior year at McKinley High School. Ellington, will be joining Bennett and Marshall as middle hitters. She is experienced as well as an explosive player. The 6 foot Gadsden State Community College transfer helped lead GSCC in qualifying for NJCAA National Tournament in 2012. She was chosen to the 2012 Alabama Community College Conference All-Region Team. Ellington averaged 3.01 kills per set and had a .450 hitting efficiency. They are all fast twitch athletes and this will be what we will need to win noted LucasWhite. Competing for the outside hitting position will be freshmen Khryssnee Madison, Rachel Smith and Chelsey Scott. Madison is a 5’-10” outside hitter from Bosse High School in Evansville, Ind., she was selected as the Evansville Courier and Press All Metro Player of the Year. Madison was voted ESPN Radio’s Volleyball Player of the Week and was the MVP
of her team, leading them in kills and blocks for the past three seasons. The First Team All-Metro, First Team All-City athlete also received the Kiwanis Award for the 2010 volleyball season. Smith a Riverside, Calif., native will be bringing in many accolades from her Martin Luther King High School experience. She was a 2012 third place Gold Division finalist with the Mavericks Club league. 2011 All League Big VIII MVP and helped her team reach the league championship. In 2011 Smith was a part of the CIF SS Volleyball Championship and the Los Oases All Tournament Volleyball team. She also was selected to the 2010 All Riverside County team, selected the 2009 REV All Tournament Player and played on the CIF SS Volleyball Championship team. Scott is a 5’-10” outside hitter who led the 2012 Enterprise High School volleyball team to its first Elite Eight State Tournament since 2005 and Area and Region Titles. The Enterprise, Ala. native was a part of the All-State Team and the Dothan Eagle Super 12 team. She was the team leader both her junior and senior year in kills, blocks and aces. Hill a 5’-5” defensive specialist from Renaissance High School in Detroit will hold down the defensive specialist spot along with junior Luiza Griz. Hill, an All City performer, was named team captain and was also named a Public School League Player of the Week. The Renaissance High School standout was named Detroit Public School League Proud Strong Learner of the Week twice during her career. She averaged 12 digs a game with and had a passing percentage of 75 percent. “Hill has great ball control,” said Lucas-White. “Our goal is to make sure that we have a lot of ball control and this will be our strength. All in all, the lineup should prove to be very strong at all positions with the bench being extremely tough as well. According to Lucas-White, the schedule will be challenging and this year’s SWAC matches should prove to be quite exciting. “The SWAC is extremely competitive and grows stronger and stronger every year. The 2012 season looks to be a great four months of volleyball. This team possesses an incredible work ethic and we should definitely have a successful year,” she said.

Alabama State University Alabama State University is in the midst of a vital season of transformation. While holding true to its legacy of providing a quality education for its students, the University also is experiencing unprecedented growth, both physically and academically.
The Legacy Alabama State University evolved from the Lincoln Normal School that opened on Nov. 13, 1867, with 113 students, thanks to the courageous efforts of its founders, nine former slaves from Perry County, Ala., known affectionately as the Marion Nine. The Lincoln School incorporated on July 18, 1867. In 1868, the State Board of Education gave the school a new designation, and it became known as Lincoln Normal School. In December 1873, the state board accepted the transfer of title to the school after a legislative act was passed authorizing the state to fund a Normal School. George N. Card was named president. Thus, the predecessor of Alabama State University became the first state-supported educational institution for blacks. This began ASU’s rich history as a “Teachers’ College.” In 1887, the second president, William Burns Paterson, was instrumental in the institution’s move from Marion to Montgomery. In the decades that followed, Lincoln Normal School became a junior college and, in 1928, a full four-year institution. More name changes were on the horizon: In 1929, the institution became State Teachers College at Montgomery, Alabama State College for Negroes in 1948 and Alabama State College in 1954. In 1969, the State Board of Education, then the governing body of the University, approved a name change to Alabama State University.
The Transformation The University’s Vision 2020 Transformation initiative was launched when Dr. William H. Harris returned to the University in 2008. During his first tenure (1994-2000), Harris was instrumental in the Knight v. State of Alabama remedial decree, which resulted in much of the tremendous growth that the University has experienced over the past 15 years. Because of the decree, the University is being transformed both physically and academically. Multimillion dollar buildings now grace the 172-acre campus and new construction is underway, including work on a $62 million stadium. The stadium is expected to be completed in time for the Turkey Day Classic in November 2012. High-demand academic programs have been established and cutting-edge research is being conducted by ASU faculty and students. We now offer the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science as well as master’s and education specialist degrees. The University also offers the Ph.D. in microbiology, the clinical doctorate in physical therapy and the Ed.D. in educational leadership, policy and law. With a focus on a global initiative, the campus has a more diverse population while maintaining its proud heritage as a Historically Black College or University (HBCU). Alabama State University charters more than 70 student organizations, including nine Greek organizations and 17 honors organizations. In addition to social, cultural and political groups, students have musical performance opportunities, such as the Mighty Marching Hornets and the University Choir, and departmental organizations for most majors. Intercollegiate athletic programs include baseball, basketball, tennis, track and field, volleyball, softball, golf, bowling and cross country. The ASU Hornets are members of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) and compete at the NCAA Division I level.
The Future
World Class. World Ready. 6
ASU has its eye on the future while remaining true to its mission of being a student-centered institution that provides quality programs in undergraduate and graduate instruction, continuing education and research. The faculty, staff and administration of the University are committed to the pursuit of the institutional goal of preparing students to compete successfully in an increasingly global economy.

University President Dr. Joseph H. Silver Sr. Dr. Joseph H. Silver Sr. was officially announced as the 13th president of Alabama State University during the Board of Trustees’ meeting on June 22, 2012. A dynamic and innovative educator and leader, Silver is described as having the “expertise, background and vigor to continue the University’s important Vision 2020 Plan and its academic and physical transformation, well into the 21st century.” Silver comes to Alabama State University from Clark Atlanta University where he served as provost and vice president of Academic Affairs. He is credited with being the architect of the university’s new strategic plan and its implementation. As provost, he also has served as the leading fundraiser for the university. Over the past 35 years, Silver has held leadership positions of increasing responsibilities, beginning at Kennesaw State College (1977 to 1986) first as a tenured associate professor of political science and later as assistant to the president and director of minority affairs and EEO officer. He served as an administrative fellow with the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia (1985 to 1986) and was named assistant vice chancellor of Academic Affairs there (1986 to 1997). In 1997, Silver was appointed vice president for Academic Affairs and professor of political science at Savannah State University, a dual role in which he served until 2006. The institution experienced unprecedented growth and expansion during his time there.
10
After his success at Savannah State, Silver was named vice president of the Commission on Colleges at the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, where he helped to shape regional and national educational policies and issues, working with institutions across 11 southern states. He also provided leadership and technical assistance on accreditation matters, supervising accreditation teams in evaluating institutions, as well as member institutions working to meet accreditation standards. He was the principal author of the Commission on Colleges’ “Diversity Statement” and quickly became a highly sought-after authority on the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP). Silver’s depth of expertise and breadth of leadership experience aided in his success in the role as provost and vice president for Academic Affairs at Clark Atlanta University, the position in which he served from January 2010 to his selection as ASU’s President. A native of North Carolina, Silver earned the B.A. degree in political science (summa cum laude) from St. Augustine’s College in Raleigh, N.C., and the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in political science from Atlanta University (now Clark Atlanta University). He completed additional studies at Oxford University (2001), the Freedom Foundation Foreign Policy Institute (1984), the American Judicature Summer Institute (1984) and Stanford University (1983). 2011 Volleyball Season Review Under the direction of first year head coach Penny LucasWhite, the 2011 Alabama State University women’s volleyball team completed one of its best seasons in several years. The Lady Hornets finished 15-22 overall and finished .500 in the conference with a 4-4 record, which placed them third in the Eastern Division.
ASU finished its final road trip of September at the Maryland Eastern Shore Tournament in Princess Anne, Md. Bell received her third SWAC Newcomer of the Week for her performance during the UMES Tournament. The team finished the first half of the season 7-15, before picking up its eighth win against Stillman College.
The season did not open as the Lady Hornets would have liked as they dropped three matches at the University of Alabama’s Bama Bash. They fell to Texas State (1-3), Austin Peay (0-3) and the host team Alabama (0-3). All was not lost during the opening tournament as freshman Maya Bell earned her first All-Tournament honor.
The Lady Hornets closed out their non-conference season, going undefeated (2-0) during the Southern University Invitational, with wins over west division foes Texas Southern (3-0) and Prairie View (3-1). Bell continued her impressive freshman campaign with her fourth SWAC Newcomer of the Week honor.
The Lady Hornets would continue its road journey as they traveled to Troy for a regular season match falling 0-3 to the Lady Trojans, before clinching its first win during the South Carolina State Spike Fest Tournament against Claflin (3-0). Roselande Corneille and Bell swept SWAC weekly honors (Defensive Player of the Week (Corneille) and Newcomer of the Week (Bell)) for their performances during the Spike fest. After the South Carolina Tournament, the Lady Hornets finally opened at home sweeping Stillman College 3-0, grabbing their second win of the season.
Alabama State suffered home losses to Jackson State (0-3) and Alabama A&M (1-3) before hitting the road again facing conference foe Alcorn State recording a 3-0 victory. The team wrapped up the regular season with a win over Alcorn (3-0) and losses to Jackson State (0-3) and Alabama A&M (1-3), earning a third place spot in the Southwestern Conference Tournament.
The Lady Hornets competed in their third tournament of the season in the Nicholls State Colonel Tournament, where they picked up their third win of the season defeating Southern University (3-0), completing the tournament 1-2. Bell earned her second All-tournament honor and Corneille picked up another SWAC weekly honor being, named SWAC Offensive Player of the Week. Alabama State also picked up its fourth win of the season in a match up at Clark-Atlanta (3-0) the same week. The Lady Hornets participated in their fourth tournament of the season at Mississippi Valley State, gaining their first conference win with a 3-1 decision over Mississippi Valley. Bell received her second recognition as SWAC Newcomer of the Week. Alabama State returned home to host its own Invitational falling to both Jackson State and South Carolina State by 3-0 scores.

ASU faced West Division member Grambling State in the first round of the SWAC Tournament and defeated the Lady Tigers 3-0. The Lady Hornets lost to Jackson State in the second round 0-3 before defeating Texas Southern in double elimination play 3-0. ASU ended the season in the semifinals of the SWAC tournament against Jackson State with a 1-3 loss. Bell concluded her freshman season by being named to the SWAC All-Tournament team. Postseason honors for the Lady Hornets included Bell being named to the All-SWAC conference squad and SWAC Freshman of the Year. Alabama State lost three members of the 2011 team to include; Ana Pego, Tiffany Dillard and Roselande Corneille.

In 1920, eight men representing six colleges from the state of Texas met in Houston to discuss collegiate athletics and the many challenges facing their respective institutions. By the time the session concluded, they had founded an athletic league that went on to become one of the leading sports associations in the world of collegiate athletics, the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). The Southwestern Athletic Conference’s current members include: Alabama A&M University (Huntsville, Ala.), Alabama State University (Montgomery, Ala.), Alcorn State University (Lorman, Miss.), Grambling State University (Grambling, La.), Jackson State University (Jackson, Miss.), Mississippi Valley State University (Itta Bena, Miss.), Prairie View A&M University (Prairie View, Texas), Southern University and A&M College (Baton Rouge, La.), Texas Southern University (Houston, Texas) and the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (Pine Bluff, Ark.). Former members of the SWAC include Bishop College (1920-56), Paul Quinn College (1920-29), Sam Houston College (1920-59), Texas College (1920-68), Wiley College (1920-68), Langston University (1931-57) and Arkansas AM&N (1936-70). The founding fathers of the original “Super Six” were C.H. Fuller of Bishop College; Red Randolph and C.H. Patterson of Paul Quinn College; E.G. Evans, H.J. Evans and H.J. Starns of Prairie View A&M; D.C. Fuller of Texas College; and G. Whitte Jordan of Wiley College. Paul Quinn became the first of the original members to withdraw from the league in 1929. When Langston University of Oklahoma was admitted into the conference two years later, it began the migration of state-supported institutions into the SWAC. Southern University entered the ranks in 1934, followed by Arkansas AM&N in 1936 and Texas Southern in 1954. Rapid growth in enrollment of the state-supported schools made it difficult for the church-supported schools to finance their athletics programs. One by one they fell victim to the growing prowess of the tax-supported colleges. Bishop withdrew from the conference in 1956, Langston in 1957 and Sam Houston in 1959, one year after the admittance of two
52
more state-supported schools – Grambling College and Jackson College. The enter-exit cycle continued in 1961 when Texas College withdrew, followed by the admittance of Alcorn A&M in 1962. Wiley left in 1968, the same year Mississippi Valley State entered. Arkansas AM&N exited in 1970 and Alabama State entered in 1982. Arkansas-Pine Bluff (formerly Arkansas AM&N) rejoined the SWAC on July 1, 1997, regaining full-member status one year later. Alabama A&M became the conference’s 10th member when it became a full member in September 1999 after a one-year period as an affiliate SWAC member. Today, the SWAC ranks among the elite in the nation in terms of alumni playing with professional sports teams, particularly in the sport of football. On the gridiron, the conference has been the biggest draw on the Division I-AA level of the NCAA, leading the nation in average home attendance for 19 of the 20 years the I-AA division has been in existence. In fact, in 1994, the SWAC fell just 40,000 fans short of becoming the first non-Division I-A conference to attract one million fans to its home games. The SWAC’s ledger of alumni reads like a who’s who in college sports listings. Representing the SWAC in pro halls of fame are football stars Lem Barney (Jackson State/Detroit Lions), Mel Blount (Southern University/Pittsburgh Steelers), Willie Brown (Grambling State/Oakland Raiders), Buck Buchanan (Grambling State/Kansas City Chiefs), Willie Davis (Grambling State/Cleveland Browns and Green Bay Packers), Ken Houston (Prairie View A&M/Houston Oilers and Washington Redskins), David “Deacon” Jones (Mississippi Valley/Los Angeles Rams, San Diego Chargers and Washington Redskins), Walter Payton (Jackson State/Chicago Bears), Jackie Slater (Jackson State/Los Angeles and St. Louis Rams) and Charlie Joiner (Grambling State/Houston Oilers, Cincinnati Bengals and San Diego Chargers); baseball stars Lou Brock (Southern University/St. Louis Cardinals) and Bill Foster (Alcorn State/Negro Leagues), and basketball star Willis Reed (Grambling State/New York Knicks). Current championship competition offered by the SWAC includes men’s baseball, basketball, cross-country, football, golf, indoor track, outdoor track and field and tennis. Women’s competition is offered in basketball, bowling, cross-country, golf, indoor track, outdoor track and field, soccer, tennis and volleyball.

NCAA Compliance remember: Ask before you act. The Alabama State University Athletic Department, in conjunction with the ASU Office of Compliance office, strives for honor and dignity of fair play and the highest standards associated with intercollegiate athletics programs. “Representatives of Athletics Interests,” which include alumni, boosters and friends of Alabama State University, all have a key role in maintaining our standards under the guidelines of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). NCAA rules and regulations for “Representatives of Athletics Interests” Relationships are easily formed with ASU student-athletes, as fans watch and cheer them on in their competitions. Building these types of relationships is not only exciting for the fans, but also important in the lives of the student-athletes. In an effort to ensure the eligibility of every student athlete is not harmed, ASU’s Compliance Office shares these guidelines for what can and cannot be provided to our student-athletes: DOs • Provide an occasional meal in your home to a student-athlete or an entire team. You also may provide transportation to your home for the occasional meal. • Provide summer employment to a student-athlete, provided the athlete is paid the going rate and only for work actually performed. DON’Ts (among other things) • Give a gift of equipment or clothing • Arrange employment for a prospect’s relatives • Give cash or co-sign on loans • Provide free or reduced-cost housing • Provide free or reduced-cost services, rentals or purchases of any type • Provide use of an automobile • Provide or arrange any special discounts, credits or special payment arrangements (i.e. airline tickets, restaurant meals, cash) • Provide the parents, family or friends of a student-athlete with free admission to an Alabama State University or booster club recognition banquet • Provide tickets to an athletics, institutional or community event Intro to NCAA Compliance: Helpful Facts ONLY coaches and athletic department staff members are permitted to be involved in the recruiting process. • Alumni, friends and “other representatives of athletics interest” (boosters) who are not employed by the University are not permitted to contact a prospect or members of the prospect’s family by letter, telephone or in person
54
for the purpose of soliciting their participation in the athletic program. Alabama State faculty members are allowed to have contact with prospects, but only while they are on campus during unofficial or official visits. A student-athlete becomes a prospect... • When the student-athlete begins ninth-grade classes. Before the ninth grade, a student-athlete becomes a prospect if a college provides any financial aid or other benefits to the student-athlete (or the athlete’s relatives or friends) that the college does not provide to all prospective students. • A student-athlete is considered a “recruited” prospect at a particular college if any coach or representative of the school’s athletics interest (booster or representative) approaches a student-athlete or any family member about enrolling and participating in athletics at that college. Activities by coaches or boosters that cause a student-athlete to become a recruited prospect are: - Providing the student-athlete with an official visit - Placing more than one telephone call to the student-athlete or any other family member - Visiting the student-athlete or any other family member anywhere other than on the college’s campus Alabama State University’s Athletics Compliance Office monitors and verifies compliance with all NCAA, SWAC and University requirements. The office educates not only the athletics staff, administration and student-athletes, but also University faculty, staff and administration, as well as other individuals and entities with athletic interests. ASU is committed and compelled to uphold the principle of institutional control in the operation of its athletics department in a way that is consistent with the rules and regulations of the NCAA, SWAC and University. Everyone involved with Alabama State athletics, both inside and outside the University, has a role and responsibility to operate with accountability and integrity when it comes to compliance with NCAA rules and regulations. Communication is the key when it comes to understanding how each person fits within the structure of the NCAA’s rules and regulations. Any questions regarding NCAA rules and regulations, especially those dealing with prospects and student-athletes, should be directed to the ASU Office of Compliance by calling 334-229-4519. The ASU athletic program needs your help and support, so please cooperate to ensure success for the Hornets, on and off the field. The information on this page was prepared by the Alabama State University Athletics Compliance Office and is presented to you as a guide to assist you with any questions you may have. There are many more NCAA rules and regulations that are not contained here.
