It is a pleasure to introduce you to the School of Music, Dance and Theatre’s 2021-22 season. As one of the top performing arts schools in the nation, the ASU School of Music, Dance and Theatre is paving the way to the future. Each year, we present over 600 concerts, recitals, productions and events filled with innovative programming, adventurous new creations and world premieres. Our performance season highlights the immense talent of our student artists, world renowned faculty and groundbreaking guest artists. Our performances take place on stages at the ASU Tempe campus, with special engagements at the ASU Kerr Cultural Center, the Musical Instrument Museum, the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, the Tempe Center for the Arts, The Madison Center for the Arts and more. Each season features dance concerts and events, music theatre and opera productions, theatrical productions, experimental works, world premieres, community festivals, and multiple options suitable for youth and families.

TheatreLAB spearheads the development of new works for theatre, some of which are penned by students and faculty. The New Works initiative in Music Theatre and Opera allows our students to showcase forthcoming works, which include regular public workshops with composers and librettists/ lyricists in residence, and typically involves one new musical and one new opera per year. Dance students regularly create choreographic works that are performed in our Emerging Artists and Transitions Projects series. Many of the pieces in development are through partnerships with professional companies and producing organizations. Our student ensembles have a long history of excellence. Our four wind bands, five choirs, three jazz ensembles and three orchestras have commissioned and premiered many new works, performed at major state, regional and national conferences and produced a number of recordings. The ASU Sun Devil Athletic Bands are recognized as being among the finest and most spirited in the nation. Ensembles such as ASU Mariachi, Marimba Maderas de Comitan, Javanese Gamelan, World Percussion and Pan Devils Steel Band offer a rich diversity of performance experiences. The Sol Motion series includes Sol Power, a celebration of hip hop culture, and Latin Sol, a Latin social dance extravaganza. We invite you to join us regularly for our live music, dance and theatre performances and hope the experience inspires, uplifts and restores you. The ASU School of Music, Dance and Theatre is home to some of the best designed venues in the nation. The music performance spaces include the acoustically perfect Katzin Concert Hall, the intimate Recital Hall and the 480-seat Evelyn Smith Music Theatre, which are designed for chamber music, solo performance and music theatre and opera respectively. The acoustics of a great cathedral are replicated in the Organ Hall, which showcases the famous pipe organ designed by Paul Fritts. The dance and theatre performance spaces include the Nelson Fine Arts Center, which houses the 480-seat Paul V. Galvin Playhouse, a black box theatre, and a dance laboratory. The Lyceum Theatre, a 162-seat modified proscenium, is also used for MainStage theatre productions.

The 250-seat Margaret Gisolo Dance Theatre is the home for many of the formal and informal showings, and the Nelson Fine Arts Plaza includes two outdoor spaces for events and performances. The most impressive of all the venues is ASU Gammage, the last great hall designed by legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright. The circular, eight-story building seats 3,000 and is one of the finest acoustical halls in the U.S. It is considered the “jewel in the crown” for performance in the Southwest and is ASU’s best-known landmark.

Your support matters… Consider transforming the life of an ASU music, dance and theatre student. We are one of the most comprehensive schools of music, dance and theatre in the United States, with almost 1,200 undergraduate and graduate students majoring in over 45 degree programs. Our students and faculty are working in our local community as well as through international channels, sharing their skills as performers, designers, playwrights, scholars, composers, therapists, community leaders, and educators. We believe that the performing arts can transform lives, and we appreciate your interest in sharing our vision! Acceptance into the ASU School of Music, Dance and Theatre is very selective and requires a tremendous amount of talent and dedication. The study of each discipline is a costly endeavor, from high quality instruments and instrument maintenance to the expenditures for musical scores and supplies, professional dance shoes and dancewear, summer festivals and programs, master classes, and lessons with renowned artists. Most of our students in the ASU School of Music, Dance and Theatre require financial assistance to make their continued study possible. Your support can directly benefit our talented young artists by enabling the School of Music, Dance and Theatre to provide more scholarships, support additional student travel and performance opportunities, acquire critical instruments, bring in guest artists and enhance other crucial areas that make the ASU School of Music, Dance and Theatre an exemplary place of learning.

To learn more about giving to the school, please contact our Office of Development: (480) 965-8985.
