Building a new economy in Arizona

A magnet for high-tech industry

Arizona State University plays a key role in Arizona’s New Economy Initiative, created to build a competitive and resilient economy in the state. The initiative seeks to attract high-tech industry, drive job creation and boost Arizonans’ prosperity.

| New Economy Initiative

ASU’s role in the New Economy Initiative helps Arizona compete for and win investment from key players in New Economy industries, such as semiconductors, microelectronics and advanced manufacturing. The university has already established a foundation for Arizona’s industrial leadership in the 21st century — as evidenced by massive new investments by Intel and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, two of the largest microchip manufacturers in the world.

| Science and technology centers

Within the scope of the New Economy Initiative, ASU has been charged with lending its muscle as a research powerhouse to better position Arizona for global tech leadership. ASU is launching new science and technology centers (STCs) that enable collaboration between faculty, students and industry partners to take big ideas from the lab to the market. The centers focus on the following:

• Manufacturing, automation and data engineering

• Advanced materials, processes and energy devices

• Human performance

• Extreme environments

• Advanced communication

| Microelectronics

Arizona is poised to lead the rebirth of American semiconductor manufacturing. For years, ASU has partnered with business and civic leaders in Greater Phoenix to develop the business environment, infrastructure and human capital necessary to drive rapid expansion in semiconductor manufacturing. Semiconductor sales are projected to nearly double, reaching over $800 billion by 2028 — and with the New Economy Initiative, Arizona stands ready to capitalize on this opportunity.

| Workforce of the future

Across every sector, ASU is focusing academic programs on producing entrepreneurial, employable graduates with the creative and problem-solving skills to drive Arizona’s growth and competitiveness. ASU is meeting industry demand for skilled workers by mobilizing the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering — the largest engineering school in the country — and 16 other schools and colleges that graduate professionals who are critical to a vibrant New Economy ecosystem, such as allied health, biosciences, digital media and film, entrepreneurship, education, finance and more. The university also partners with the private sector to develop upskilling, re-skilling and specialized training programs for the existing workforce.

| Collaboration

Working in partnership with private enterprises — from local entrepreneurs to Fortune 100 companies — ASU is helping businesses to grow and thrive by providing the workforce, expertise and technology solutions they need to succeed. The integrated, industry-informed approach will help Arizona to attract and develop the industries that will drive American and global economic growth for decades to come.
