Asylum Aid Asylum Aid is a leading asylum rights advocate in the UK and Europe, with a demonstrable track record of securing protection from persecution for individual refugees, and of achieving significant structural improvements to the UK asylum process. Highly regarded for the rigour of our legal representation and the authority of our work with government, Asylum Aid is a prominent and respected voice on protection matters in the UK and Europe, as well as a strategically important NGO in the asylum rights movement.
Thomas’ story We helped Thomas, who was hounded out of Uganda for being gay. Like young gay men around the world, Thomas grew up having to endure gossip and prejudice. But in Uganda, this discrimination is deadly. In the face of international outcries, the Ugandan government has passed some of the harshest anti-gay laws in the world. When Thomas was spotted with his lover one night, a mob gathered, attacking him with rocks and threatening him with death. He was locked out of his home, and his own family turned him away. He came to the UK to study, and watched as the government back home tried to pass a law that would introduce the death penalty for gay men. Thomas applied for asylum. And Asylum Aid looked after him. His caseworker worked with him for hours, helping him tell what had happened to him and what he feared would happen if he had to go back to Uganda. Thomas was recognised as a refugee last year, and now he can rebuild his life in safety.
