Auschwitz: The Story

A

uschwitz – Birkenau is the site of the most notorious mass murder in the history of humanity. Its remains have been memorialized and continue to serve as a mirror of the human soul and a tool for self-reflection.

A

ll over the world, Auschwitz is seen as a symbol of terror, genocide, and the Holocaust.

E

stablished in 1940 by the Nazis during WWII, Auschwitz was an enormous labor camp and death factory. The name “Auschwitz” came from the Polish word “Oświęcim,” the name of the Polish city near which the camp was built. The complex consists of two main camps: Auschwitz I - the administrative centre; and Auschwitz II (Birkenau) – an extermination camp.

T

he number of people killed at the camp was estimated to be between 1.1 - 1.6 million.

O

ur Auschwitz – Birkenau Tour gives you the opportunity to hear about the Holocaust and see one of the most terrifying, yet also touching, places in the World.

Wieliczka: The Story THE ONE AND ONLY SALT MINE IN THE WORLD preserved in such pristine condition! 135 meters underground! Visited by more than 1 million tourists every year!

The historic Salt Mine in Wieliczka is the only site in the world where mining has continued since the Middle Ages. Comprised of nine levels, its original excavations (longitudinals, traverses, chambers, lakes, as well as lesser and major shafts) stretch for a total of 300 kilometers, reaching a depth of 327 meters. They clearly illustrate all stages of the development of mining technology over time.” – This quotation comes from the official justification for adding the Wieliczka Salt Mine to UNESCO’s 1st World List of Cultural and Natural Heritage.

T

he mine is also notable for a long tradition of tourism. The famous breath-taking site has been visited over the centuries by Nicolaus Copernicus, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Alexander von Humboldt, Dimitri Mendeleev, Boleslaw Prus, Ignacy Paderewski, Pope John Paul II, and crowned heads of state, not to mention millions of people from all over the world. Included in the tour is a stunning "underground town" with lakes, passages, and the marvelous St Kinga chapel.

Old Town: The Story

S

ee the beauty of the Old Town with its original Medieval street layout, marvelous architecture, and unique atmosphere that distinguishes Krakow from the rest of Poland. As the former capital of Poland, it has a rich history which is still visible even today.

R

OYAL ROUTE – the highlight of the Old Town, which begins at St. Florian's Church in the northern part of the Medieval Old Town, continues along Floriańska, Grodzka, and Kanonicza Streets, and ends at Wawel Castle – the old residence of Polish monarchs, which was built in the 14th century. With a number of prominent historic landmarks on its way, The Royal Route is a true reminder of the golden age in Krakow's history.

W

AWEL HILL – A 50m-high rock on the edge of the old town located on the bank of the Vistula River. On the top you’ll see the most important monument of Poland – Wawel Castle. The building is a mixture of Medieval, Romanesque, Renaissance, and Baroque style. Up until the 17th century the Castle was the seat of the Polish Royal power. One of the most important parts of the historical structure is the Cathedral, which is full of chapels, tombs and sarcophagi. While visiting Wawel Hill do not forget to enter the Royal Chambers and the Armoury. The cord in front of the Cathedral offers a beautiful view of the Sigismund Chapel with its gold covered roof.

S

T. MARY’S BASILICA, Rynek Główny 4 – The basilica was built in the 13th century in place of the previous one, which was destroyed during one of the Tartar invasions. Inside, you will find works of the most prominent artists in this region of Europe. The magnificent altarpiece by Veit Stoss and the polychrome paintings by Matejko, Mehoffer, and Wyspiański are only some of them.

S

S PETER& PAUL’S CHURCH – The most important Jesuit church in the city. Although it was built in the first decades of the 17th century, it was rebuilt a few times and its current appearance is much different from the original one.

T

HE CLOTH HALL – This 14th century building was rebuilt after the conflagration in 1555 and serves as a splendid edifice of the renaissance. Some structures, such as the arcades or the central transepts, were added on in the late 1800s.

8

Jewish District: The Story

T

he District of Kazimierz is the historical Jewish part of Krakow. Its narrow streets and courts are full of interesting Jewish architecture. Founded in 1335 by King Kazimierz the Great, this district used to be a separate city altogether.

T

HE NEW CEMENTARY. Ul.Miodowa 55 – A place where many of Krakow’s distinguished Jews were buried in the 19th and 20th century.

T

HE OLD SYNAGOGUE. Ul.Szeroka 24 – The oldest remaining example of Jewish architecture in Poland. Built in the early 1500's, it is now the site of many exhibitions devoted to Polish Judaism.

I

SAAC’S SYNAGOGUE. Ul.Kupa 18 – The renovation of this Judaic-baroque style Synagogue is still in progress, yet it is quite possibly the most interesting and beautiful Jewish monument in Krakow.

Nowa Huta: The Story

N

owa Huta is the easternmost district of Krakow and a formerly separate town which was a huge centre of heavy industry. Founded by the Soviet Union around 1949, it became a fine example of deliberate social engineering in the world.

A

s part of an effort to combat the development of a more ‘intellectual Poland’, a residential complex and massive Steel Mill (Sendzimir Factory) was built. The town played an undeniable historical and symbolic role in the construction, contestation, and collapse of socialism in Poland; and influenced the social transformations that followed.

T

he impressive socio-realist center is currently considered a monument of architecture; however, it is also famous for its greeneries, parks, two picturesque artificial lakes, and treelined avenues.

THE TOUR INCLUDES: ● mini-bus with driver ● professional guide ● a visit to the most important parts of Wadowice, including the Pope's house and the Basilica ● a visit the Kalwaria Zebrzydowska Sanctuary

ABOUT:

W

adowice, with its stunning baroque architecture, is a charming town located 50 km to the west of Krakow. Apart from the architecture though, the most important fact about Wadowice is that it was home to one of the most famous Poles; namely Karol Wojtyla, now more commonly known as Pope John Paul II.

O

ur trip to Wadowice starts with a visit to the flat in which John Paul II was born on 18th May 1920. This is where he lived until he moved to Krakow to study at University. The place was turned into a museum soon after he was elected 263rd Pope of the Roman Catholic Church. The next important point of the trip is a nearby church where Wojtyla was first baptized and then later served as an altar boy. As a part of the tour you will also see Kalwaria Zebrzydowska Sanctuary – – a place of pilgrimage for many Catholics with a park complex from the 17th century, placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1999. First as a priest and then as Pope, John Paul II loved to walk the paths of the sanctuary. He considered it to be an enlightening spiritual experience.

Practical Info Public transport: Although the public transport in Krakow does not work perfectly, it is the best way to get around the city centre. By taking a tram you will avoid the inconvenient traffic jams that take place during the week at around 8 am and 5 pm. Public transport fares in Krakow: ● Adult single: 2.80 PLN ● Adult 60 min: 3.60 PLN ● Adult daily ticket: 12 PLN ● Adult 48h ticket: 20 PLN ● Adult 72h ticket: 28 PLN Tickets are available in some corner shops, all Kiosks, and ticket machines near tram and bus stops. Validate the ticket immediately after boarding. If you don’t, you may be fined up to 100zł.

Taxi: You’ll always pay around 7 zł + 1,50 - 3,00/PLN/km. The price depends on the time at which you order the taxi. Usually it is more expensive during weekends and after 10 pm. Always check to see if the driver turns on the taximeter. If not, ask him/her to do so. This will ensure that you never overpay.

International Phone Calls: If you want to call abroad, you have several options: ● Standard telephone connection using a TPSA magnetic or electronic card. These cards should be bought in a Kiosk and used in a booth. Unfortunately this is very expensive. ● Cheap international call cards (TelePin, TeleGrosik), which are available in every Kiosk, and offer a low-cost fare for all European countries and the majority of countries on other continents. ● Call centers, which are still not very common in Poland. You can usually find them in Internet cafes. Some hostels and hotels offer very cheap international phone calls. Ask at the reception.
