FOOD AS NON-VERBAL LANGUAGE

6

The recent influx of immigrants at the US-Mexico border has brought a multitude of health concerns due to the difficult journey and harsh conditions in detention facilities. This project introduces new approachs towards immagrants’ settlements, addressing the health and social challenges through welcoming centers, community centers, and housing units. By inheriting Austin’s diverse culture, the program focuses on building a community that is welcoming, inclusive, and supportive through a “Common Recipe“ among all race, language and ethnicity. This “Common Recipe“ recognizes food as one of the essential elements that prospers health, connects communities, and inherits one’s cultural identity. The program puts emphasize on communal cooking, communal dining, food growing, and food sharing among the immigrant and local communities. The experience of food is inseparable from the solution towards health and social issues of the immigrants. The program guides the immigrants at the moment of arrival, welcoming them, providing food, settling information, walking through communal facilities, supplying basic needs such as healthcare and permanent address etc.

SITE CONTEXT The site is located in North East Austin, Texas. This existing location is a forested land designated for affordable housing. The North and East side are two stories residential housing, the South and West side are light-use commercial area. Interstate 35 highway connects Austin with the Mexican border, which then is one of the prominent route for immigrants to travel from Latin American countries to United States. The site sits on the East side of Interstate 35, which serves as a first contact point for the immagrants.

UPON ARRIVAL The welcoming center is the first contact point of the immigrants. The welcoming hall is connected to a bus stop which serves the interstate 35 highway. The immigrants who gets off the bus would receive food, water, immediate supplies, and information of settling down. The welcoming center is a rather public area which includes cafetera, pharmacy, grocery, delivery-pickup spot, tenants and public bathroom. This space is shared between the surrounding neighborhood and the immigrants’ community. The grocery provides dirrect fresh vegetables, meats, and daily essentials which lacked on the site.

FOR THE COMMUNITY The community center locates in the center of the site. It is a more private area where the programs serves the immigrant community. The emphasis is placed on the central kitchen, which sits next to the farmland, and bridges the childcare center and commal dining hall. The food is being harvested in the local farmland, and the central kitchen is for prepping daily meals for the immigrant community and the children. The kitchen has an open layout which can incorporate cooking lessons.

AFFORDABLE HOUSING The residential units are composed of modular prefabricated units. Due to the changing numbers of immigrants, the prefab system can allow expansion of the affordable apartments in the future. Each residential unit will share a common first floor, with common laundry, kitchen, mailroom etc. There are also storefront layouts for family who wants to start a business. 14

TRANSPORTATION AS PROGRESS

18

The current Red Hook faces two major concerns, the social issues caused by economic decline, and environmental threats of fload and sea level rise. In the history of New York City, Red Hook’s contribution towards the econimic growth was indespensable. It was once the largest transportation hub for oversea goods and travelers in the world. Today, Red Hook is isolated from the city due to urbanization, unemployment, and crime. The project invisions to create a future transportation hub which includes hydrogen powered hyperloop, electric ferry, and EV bus terminal. The project will go through two phases, in phase one, it will reactivate the economy of local community, in phase two, the hub will withstand the sea level rise and become an isolated transportation hub for future New York City.

DETACHABLE HYPERLOOP DESIGN PROPOSAL

CAPSULE & POD DOCKING SYSTEM

Hyperloop’s compact body allows city to city travel in an efficient manner. Due to that the density of city limits the size of a Hyperloop station, an efficient system with dense departure schedule is required for a Hyperloop design. One hyperloop vehicle contains a capsule shell and a passenger pod to maximize efficiency in docking, maintenance, and refuel. This design provides a hydrogen-powered hyperloop that has independent energy sources.

SENSITIVITY AS BOUNDARY

Mott Haven, located in South Bronx, has been an area overlooked by the development and planning of New York City. The complex racial, financial, and social issues became so prominent, that the needs of vulnerable LGBQT+ population has been neglected as less important matters. As one of the least LGBTQ+ friendly community in the five boroughs, many vulnerable individuals lack professional support, guidance, and shelter. This project, “Translucent Threshold“, aims to design a community center that provides therapy sessions, career guidances, basic educations, immediate medical cares, LGBTQ+ advocations, and temporary shelter units. The program supports vulnerable individuals to cross the berriers of descriminations, homelessness, career setbacks, economic vulnerabilities, lack of cares and social resources. On the other hand, the community center also opens partially to the local community, to allow community bonding and acurate understanding of the LGBTQ+ community. “Translucent Threshold“ serves as both the threshold of improving the lives of vulnerable individuals in the LGBTQ+ community, and a more inclusive community in Mott Haven.

The victory of war should not be celebrated upon the death of innocent people. The site is located at Trinity, New Mexico, where the first nuclear bomb “Fat Man“ was tested. It was then immediately sent to Nagasaki and Hiroshima, Japan. The current trinity site is a tourist spot which celebrates the victory of war, this project turns the existing location into a monument to remember the innocent people who died in war. The visitors of this memorial will place a rock upon entry. Overtime, the rocks become part of the memorial, representing the ones who passed away from the nuclear bombing, and reminding people the inhuman destructions of nuclear bombs.
