ATARI2GO

The following information will show you how to build an emulated ‘on the run’ Atari 800 computer on an Android TV Dongle Stick. The Atari2go device will allow you to play Atari 800 Games on your TV Screen connected to the HDMI port. All you need is an Android TV Stick device, a USB disk on key to copy files and a USB Mouse for the setup procedure. As a previous step, download and unzip the following file: Atari800stk from https://goo.gl/iSB1kN (4.9 MB).

The file contains the following applications:

Colleen_3.0_apk-dl.com.apk - Atari emulator Colleen Root Browser 2.2.3.apk – allows you to explore the HDMI stick “rooted” directories. KingoRoot.apk – serves to “root” the HDMI stick. StartupManager.full_4.7.apk – lets you enable/disable which programs will be automatically loaded when starting the HDMI stick.

Also:  

bootanimation.zip – an animated Atari logo to replace the original (optional). bg-image.jpg – an Atari image to replace the original wallpaper(optional).

Besides, two folders:  

ROMS: contains Atari OS´ROMs needed to execute the emulator. DISKS: a selection of Atari games in ATR format.

1. Copy the content of the ZIP file to a removable media (disk on key) and connect it to the USB port of the android device. 2. Connect the Android device to your TV HDMI port, the Power Adapter to the power source and to a Standard USB Mouse to the second USB port of the Android device.

3. Once the device finished booting, press and hold the Left Mouse button on the desktop, select to navigate to the Gallery and choose the Atari background image to be used as the desktop Background form now on.

4. Click on the File Browser Application that the Android device came with and navigate to the folders in the Disk on Key (it should be under USB devices) then Press and hold the Left mouse button while pointing on the ATR800STK folder, this will allow you to select the Copy option. Now click on the Internal Flash to show the Android device internal directory, then press and hold the left mouse button while pointing the Download directory and select the Paste option. Now you are about to copy the entire ATR800STK folder to your android device, select background copy.

5. Navigate to the ATARI800STK folder and click on the Root Browser APK to install this App, open the APP when the installation complete, click on "mnt" folder, then on "internal_sd" folder, then on "Atari800STK" folder and do a long left mouse button press on the bootanimation.zip file and select "COPY", then Click on the HOME button, and navigate to the /System folder, then to the /Media folder and select "Paste" to overwrite the existing Bootanimation.zip file with the new ATARI LOGO one. (If you do not have permission to copy it means your device is not Rooted, jump to the end of this document it will explain how to root the android device).

6. Go back to the file browser to install the Colleen Atari Emulator. Then select to open the Application. When running the application the first time it will ask you to navigate to the directory of the ATARI ROM file, navigate to ATARI800STK/ROM fielder and click on "Select Directory". Now click on the Coleen Emulator preference menu and remove the checkbox from the "Joystick Visible" option, go back to the main screen were you see the Atari Self Test , mouse the mouse to the top edge of the screen , and click the folder icon to choose an ATR file to load, navigate to the ATARI800SK/DISK folder and select a file you want to load to test the progress so far.

7. Exit the Colleen emulator (point your mouse to the top edge of the screen, you will find a navigation menu to allow exiting the emulator) , go back to the file browser app.. Select to install the STARTUP MANAGER application, and run the application. Using the Startup Manager you can remove any application you do not want the Android device to start automatically. Click on the "customize option" and select "Add startup items", select "User Applications" and check the "Colleen" emulator from the menu, and Save. You can now exit the app by clicking on the Home button.

8. Now let´s do a desktop cleanup, press and keep pressing the left mouse button on any desktop icon and drag it to the trash in order to remove it from the main screen, (you can also drag the clock to the trash). To remove the Google search bar, go to the startup Manager and navigate to the SYSTEM application list, click on the Google Search (-) icon and select to disable the search bar this will result in a clean desktop next time you reboot the android device.

Next time you reboot the Android TV Stick the device desktop will show as In the image below and it will boot directly to the Atari 800 Colleen emulator.

If your Android device is not rooted, you need to root the device in order to change the boot animation to the Atari rotating logo. 1. Connect the Android device to the WIFI. 2. Navigate to install the knigoroot apk. 3. Open the kingoroot app and click on the ROOT button. 4. Wait until the process complete. 5. Start the root browser and do step 5 again, when asked Give kingoroot super user tool permission to copy the file over the existing one. That’s it, you are all set to go. Reboot the Android TV Stick and the Atari will boot to self-test 30 seconds later. Enjoy!
