from the Ateneo Psyche President '20-'21

Around this time last year, our first online semester was just about to officially begin—both for our academics, as well as for Ateneo Psyche. I believe we all had our fair share of worries at the beginning, given the many uncertainties we were to face this school year. Though, looking back, it made me realize that most of those worries only stayed as worries, and I am absolutely amazed at just how much this organization has grown and adapted to all the challenges we were faced with. Everything seems to have gone by so quickly and it really doesn’t feel like an entire year has already passed, especially since we’ve all spent the majority of it in our own homes. Despite the lockdown and social distancing, I believe Ateneo Psyche became and remained a home to many. It was an avenue for people to hone their skills, meet new people, and share their passion for psychology and mental health with others. Knowing that this is my last year in Ateneo, I do not regret spending it serving in this organization, and I could not have been prouder to see the organization grow into what it is today. Everything we have accomplished this year would not have been possible without the hard work and passion of my fellow officers and members. I extend my sincerest gratitude to you all for choosing to make Psyche a part of your journey in Ateneo. This upcoming school year is no different, and I know that you all still have your worries about the challenges that may come. All I can say is: have courage. Don’t let fear stop you from doing what you are called to do, and enjoy your time here in Psyche. I know the world will continue to pose new challenges for all of us, but I believe that with everything we’ve faced so far, it can only get better from here as I put my faith in the new term and members of the organization. So, thank you for the four years, Ateneo Psyche! You will forever hold a special place in my heart.

Dear Graduating Students, This was not the school year that we expected. Your senior year has been quite challenging: adjusting to the online set-up, longing to be with friends, and missing the campus. On top of that, you have to navigate a world that is in the middle of a pandemic and various social issues. Despite these challenges, I know that you did your best with what you can and what you have. I am deeply grateful for and proud of all your efforts: big, small, and everything in between. A warm congratulations to all of you! You made it! This painting is my humble graduation gift to all of you. I painted this after a semester of teaching many of you in this graduating batch. Just like this sunflower, may you face the world with courage and humility… with your chin up and A sunflower represents loyalty and longevity your feet deeply-rooted to the ground. because it roots itself ever so slowly, yet deeply in the ground. Just like this sunflower, I hope that you I would also like to thank you for contributing will eventually find your place in the world, with a piece of your being to our Ateneo Psychology a firm yet gentle knowing that you are planted home. Not being able to spend your senior year on where you’re meant to be. Even if that process may campus only affirms that a home is not confined to be tough and filled with challenges, trust that you concrete structures. SPECIAL MESSAGE

from the Psychology Department

Dear Psychology graduates of 2021, To say that you are a special batch is an understatement. The AB and BS Psychology class of 2021 will always be remembered in many ways. You are the last batch of the old curriculum and the batch that pioneered online learning. Together with your professors, we struggled through using Canvas and Zoom, and started using terms like “modules” and “quarters.” I know it was not easy to spend your last year in Ateneo stuck at home and not with each other physically, since college life is not just about academics, but also about orgs and friendships. But due to the pandemic, you were not able to fully enjoy these as seniors. It is heartbreaking, I know, which is why I truly admire your batch for being resilient and strong. Your batch is also special to me particularly because this is the last year that I will be the Department Chair. I was also lucky enough to teach one thesis class in your batch, so I got to know some of you more closely. To be honest, my expectations weren’t high at the start of the school year because of our current situation. However, I was truly amazed at how all my students did exceptionally in my class, and I didn’t encounter any problems. I am also proud of all the achievements of Psyche in the past year. You have exceeded expectations, and I’m so proud of all of you! So, to the Psychology class of 2021, my deepest congratulations to you all and prayers for a successful life and career after college. Whether you pursue graduate studies (hopefully with us again), work, or go to medical school or law school, I wish you all the best! I hope that you will always have fond memories of your Psychology classes. Please remember that the Ateneo Psychology Department is your home.

+ BRANDING Ateneo Psyche’s first logo, the running man, was established during the organization’s birth and was used until 2014.

THE GREAT MERGE Before, there used to be three psychology organizations in the Ateneo. These organizations merged into one to form what we now know as Ateneo Psyche. Today, Ateneo Psyche is the premiere psychology organization of the Ateneo de Manila University.

LECTURE SERIES Since 2007, this has been a major project of Ateneo Psyche that features keynote speakers giving lectures on the importance of psychology in the real world. The latest Last Lecture speech was given in 2017 by Fr. Jett Villarin. At present, the Lecture Series has resurfaced and been rebranded as the Psych X Series.

INSTITUTION VISITS The Institution Visits is one of the flagship projects of the organization that allows its members to interact with partner institutions and patients through research and vocational-related programs. Now, the Lecture Series has been rebranded as Psyche Visits. Psyche's current partner institutions include Estrellas Home Care Clinic, Inc., L'Arche Philippines, and the National Center for Mental Health (NCMH).

Our logo became the psi symbol, along with an A to honor the university. The house in the middle of the logo with the red roof and yellow walls symbolize Ateneo Psyche as a home organization for psychology majors.

YEAR-END BALL The Year-End Ball is a yearly project by the Finance Department that commemorates the organization’s achievements, congratulates the graduating members, and inducts the new officers. Unfortunately, this was not held in A.Y. 2019-2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

>>> PSYMPOSIA Psymposia is the annual leadership training seminar open to the members of the organization. This is where they are trained to become potential leaders of the organization through the application of psychological concepts.

< 2017 RENDEZVOUS Rendezvous was an MBTI speed-dating event where individuals were matched together based on their respective MBTI. Proceeds of the event went to the National Center for Mental Health (NCMH).

REBRANDING

It retains the elements of its predecessors, yet expresses it in different elements. The psi symbol is psyche, which represents the human mind, soul, and spirit. On the other hand, the brain— being the soul, and spirit— represents how Ateneo Psyche is the center for people interested in psychology.

NCMH AWARENESS WEEK NCMHAW is a fundraising project of Ateneo Psyche which aims to aid the primary beneficiaries of the organization through selling products and pledges from the LS community.

ATENEO PSYCHE PRIVILEGE CARD

An organization first, members were able to avail of discounts with Ateneo Psyche’s partner establishments situated around Katipunan such as Jamba Juice, La Carnita, and V Spot.

PSYCH X SERIES

The Psych X Series focuses on the intersectionality between psychology and different disciplines. The first two episodes focused on the role that psychology plays in nation building and Filipino culture.

RED LETTER DAY ...

RED Letter Day is a Valentine-themed talk and is one of the flagship projects of Ateneo Psyche that focuses on the necessity of Respect, Equality, and Diversity, with each iteration focusing on a specific sector. The very first RED was in A.Y. 2018-2019, which talked about the LGBTQIA+ community.

PSYCHE TODAY Psyche Today was first launched in February 2020 as the official publication of Ateneo Psyche that focuses on psychological topics and mental health resources for the general consumption of the public.

#FTHESTIGMA #FTheStigma is a yearly initiative that includes a mental health awareness campaign and fundraiser for mental health institutions in the Philippines.

Psyche’s Communities was a two-week long project that promoted the sense of community or “samahan” and the need for togetherness. In the two weeks, the donation drive provided in-kind and monetary assistance to the mental health sector of our partner communities, namely L’Arche Philippines: Ang Arko ng Pilipinas and Estrellas Home Care Clinic, Inc., as they coped with the lack of resources and monetary support due to the ongoing pandemic. The project raised a total of PHP16,900.00.

RED Letter Day, one of Ateneo Psyche’s flagship projects this year, was a Valentine’s Day themed online campaign that aimed to discuss the importance of Respect, Equality, and Diversity. It expounded on these topics by delving into different contexts every year, focusing on relevant and significant situations faced by society. With the fastapproaching 2022 elections, this year's RED Letter Day aimed to raise awareness on voters' education. The event garnered over 240 participants in total, coming from inside and outside the organization, as well as the Loyola Schools community. With the insights shared by such highly reputable speakers, participants were greatly empowered after knowing the power they hold in contributing to the upcoming elections. PROJECT MANAGEMENT TEAM The Psych X Series was a series of webinars directed to navigate psychology in the Filipino’s turbulent society and indicate its role in nation-building. The second episode of the series, Kalinangan, endeavored to accentuate psychology’s nature as a discipline that can serve as a median between a culture and its people. Through the extensive knowledge shared by the speakers, participants were able to appreciate the indigenization of Sikolohiyang Pilipino at a much higher level.The webinar ended with a breakout session to further facilitate discussion and processing of the topics’ impact in our country today. #FTheStigma consisted of a fundraiser and raffle which aimed to raise funds by selling handmade products from our own beneficiary, L’Arche Philippines: ng Arko ng Pilipinas and exclusive merch from Ateneo Psyche’s Merch Designing Competition. These were for Psyche as well as for our partner communities, L’Arche Philippines and Estrellas Home Care Clinic, Inc. There was also a three-part webinar series with professionals in the field, who talked about topics such as the state of mental health in the Philippines, understanding the complexities of mental health, and how we can actively battle the social stigma against mental health. By shedding light on the importance of mental health being a journey, the series hoped to emphasize the role of the community in addressing the deeply-rooted problems regarding mental health. This project was able to raise a total of Php 3,420. Check out the livestream video of the event here:

Sublimation Vacation: Anything Under The Sun, through art, was an avenue for Ateneo Psyche members to celebrate everyone’s liberty to be able to express their thoughts and emotions. With different fun-filled games for one month, we experienced the summer getaway right in the comfort of our own homes. To cap off this month-long project, the CreAM department also organized Ateneo Psyche's very own art journaling workshop that was both open to members and nonmembers of the organization.

Wired Together was a fundraising project which shared the advocacy of Ateneo Psyche as well as the talents and skills of artists through a merch design competition, and gave both members and non-Psyche members a sense of normalcy even in an online class setting. The top three designs that were publicly sold were chosen based on the results of the votation by the members of the org. 80% of the proceeds were then donated to our partner institutions, namely L’arche Philippines: Ang Arko ng Pilipinas Inc., and Estrellas Home Care Clinic, Inc. while the other 20% of it was given to the artists behind merch designs. In total, this project was able to raise Php 5,379. Check out the winning designs here:

Social Psyche was a series of hangouts where members of the organization were given the opportunity to bond with each other. To accommodate the recent shift to online platforms, these hangouts consisted of online multiplayer games and watch parties that allowed the members to meet new people and foster engagement with fellow members. The hangouts revolved around the themes of new beginnings, love, comedy, and summer.

Messages to Seniors Though I haven't been as active as other Psyche freshies, I want to thank our senior members for preserving the inclusive and warm nature of the organization. I would have loved it if I had the chance to physically meet all of you (possibly worked with you, as well), but our circumstances wouldn't allow that right now. I'm sorry that you all had to experience your final year in ADMU online due to the pandemic. I'm hoping that this year—or the next, too—would finally be the last so that you can all live out your "lost" opportunities. Good luck with your endeavors! We're all rooting for you <3 Hi, seniors! Thank you so much for being our ates and kuyas during this time. As a panganay and sophomore, I really appreciated being able to look to you upperbatchmen for advice or guidance and even stories of the Atenean life onsite since I didn’t get to experience much of it pre-pandemic. While circumstances might not permit us to see each other as you graduate and enter another chapter in life, I really hope someday I can meet you all in person and give you a hug HAHAHA <3 Your batch is so full of love and life and I can’t wait to see you all shine in your individual pursuits. :) Love you lots, seniors!

Hi there! First off, I'd like to greet you all my dearest congratulations on surviving college! It's surely not an easy thing, especially in these difficult times. I'm proud of you all. Although I haven't met with you all in real life, and some not even in the online setting, I feel connected with all of you through Psyche. I wish you all the best in the real world! Just know that we're here for you as Ateneo Psyche will always be your home.

Hi Rhae! Honestly, it's such a shame that we weren't able to work together for so long since I only became a member of Psyche this school year. Despite my short stay, I've been really enjoying my time here because of the people around me such as you! I wasn't even sure if being under A&R was something I should pursue given that the title and knowing nobody else intimidated me, but I have no regrets joining because of the great environment I'm in. You've been a really great VP and so many of us here in the department look up to you not only as a great leader but also a life coach. I also admire how you conduct meetings in general — it's like you know how to exude that aura of seriousness for the agenda to be accomplished but know how to keep things friendly and fun at the same time. I'd like to say thank you for guiding me when I was a Project Head for Psych X, and for being understanding towards my situation when I couldn't do tasks. A&R is definitely going to miss you and we'll do our best to continue your legacy here. Good luck with the real world; I know it seems daunting once you graduate but we're always supporting you every step of the way! <3
