Bidding

We are situated on the A3094 south west of Salisbury based at The Livestock Market which is signposted on approaches to the City. We have a large car park and refreshments are available.

If you are unable to attend the sale you can leave a written bid. The auctioneers will execute commissions to buy as cheaply as other bids and reserves allow. On the more expensive lots it is usually possible to bid on the telephone by prior arrangement.

Payment & Clearance

Payment should be made during the sale and where practical lots can usually be collected before the end of the auction. Buyers unknown to us should furnish us with their bank details. Payment can be made by Debit card; cash; credit card (2% surcharge) or cheque by prior arrangement. Card payments where the card holder is not present will only be accepted for transactions up to £500. Any card transaction which we are unable to verify against the given address cannot be processed. 1525. Interesting Iraqi embroidered wedding blanket, Samawa, Marshlands of southern Iraq, 20th century, 7ft. 1in. x 4ft. 11in. 2.16m. x 1.50m. Worked in bright colours in chain stitch on hand-woven narrow widths joined together. Note the three amusing figures in the top left corner and the bird or animal motifs lower left side, surrounded by geometric and flowerhead motifs. An exhibition of these blankets was held at the NEC Birmingham as part of the Festival of Quilts in 2010. £150-250

Note the brilliant plain aquamarine mihrab with hanging lamp and a floral column to each side; a rectangular aquamarine floral plaque above the spandrels. Lot 1549 1549. Machine woven English ‘Celtic Hunting Rug’ designed by George Bain, manufactured by Messrs. Quayle & Tranter, Kidderminster, about 1948, 6ft. 3in. x 3ft. 11in. 1.91m. x 1.20m. Damage and losses to one side. Another rug of this design and size was sold at Bonhams, Edinburgh, 21st August 2013, Lot 434 for £1,250 including premium. Note the four prancing archaic horses in the pale blue field and the ‘windmill’-like motifs in each corner. Lot 1824 1824. Very impressive Japanese silk embroidered hanging, the brown linen ground finely embroidered in floss silks depicting a splendid peacock perched on a flowering branch and displaying to a peahen below among chrysanthemums and other flowers; the hanging within a linen floral woven border with remains of tassels to the corners. The whole now laid on undyed cotton lining. Japan, 19th century, 76in. x 55in. 293cm. x 140cm. Including the woven border. Some wear with rubbing to stitches in places. The embroidered part is composed of one large panel and another panel of five smaller pieces, all joined together, with shaped corners. Lot 1846 1846. Magnificent Italian embroidered hanging, probably late 19th/ early 20th century, 120in. x 69in, 305cm. x 176cm, the design in the Arts and Crafts manner, the embroidery in the manner of Venetian silk embroidery of the 17th century. The linen ground entirely covered in pale gold/beige floss silk which has been couched down in narrow parallel lines; the beautifully drawn flowers and foliage similarly couched and worked in shaded silks, the centres of some flowerheads worked with French knots. Lined with corded linen. Note: this embroidery was professionally vacuumed and mounted on its present backing by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York some years ago. Provenance: By direct descent to the present owner from Sir Russell Hornby of Barraclough, Clitheroe, Lancashire who inherited them from his maternal uncle, ‘Count’ Redmond Toler Clayton-Browne Clayton of the Villa La Punta, Cervara, Santa Margherita, Ligure, Italy. This lovely embroidery and the following lot formed part of the furnishings of this villa, the contents of which were shipped back just before the outbreak of World War II. The Count’s will is dated 29th July 1929 and proved in London on 22nd October 1937. £3000-5000

1847. Exceptional Italian silk and metal thread hanging, first half 18th century, 125in. x 29in. 318cm. x 74cm. Linen ground with embroidery in the manner of Venetian silk embroidery of the 17th century. The exquisitely drawn scrolling flowers fruit and vegetables worked in a long stitch in beautifully shaded silks, the foliage and urns worked in couched silks on a heavily embroidered ground of couched gold coloured metal thread; narrow border of couched silk and gold coloured metal thread trifoliate motifs. The embroidery now laid down on a later linen panel and the whole mounted on an olive green cotton ground. It is possible that the hanging was once longer as there appears to be no top border as such. Professionally vacuumed and mounted by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York some years ago. The lower end joined horizontally and with a small piece cut and joined, probably a kink repair; the wide top end now separated. The main piece is composed of four rows of seven archetypal guls and it is likely that, according to the literature, the composition would have been four rows of nine guls. Terms & Conditions of Sale Affecting purchasers and other attending the sale premises. 1. Purchasers will be deemed: a) To have inspected their lots prior to the sale; and b) To have accepted that lots are sold with all faults and imperfections specifically mentioned or not irrespective of whether they have bid in person, by commission or through an agent. 2. All goods are second hand and sold without warranty unless otherwise stated in the sale catalogue or by the auctioneers from the rostrum. Any implied warranty, condition or other term is excluded except where to do so would be unlawful. 3. The auctioneers undertake that care has been taken to see that catalogue descriptions are accurate and reliable, however these are matters of opinion only and shall not be taken to be statements of fact. 4. The auctioneers act as agents to the vendor and shall not incur liability to any purchaser for any statement, representation or warranty as to title, quality or otherwise of any lot made on behalf of and with the vendors authority. 5. If a dispute arises as to any bidding then at the discretion of the auctioneers either: a) The lot to which the disputed bid relates shall immediately be put up again, or b) The auctioneer shall determine the dispute and his decision shall be final and binding on all parties.

9. a) At the fall of the hammer the purchaser is required to give his own name (or where applicable his paddle number). If he has bid on behalf of another person, company or organisation he should make this clear to the auctioneer at the time. b) If, and as required the auctioneer at the fall of the hammer the purchaser shall also give his address and/or the address if the principal and/or pay to the auctioneer all or part of the purchase price plus VAT and buyer’s premium. c) Any such payment at the fall of the hammer may be treated, at the auctioneer’s discretion, as a general deposit against all purchases, made by the purchaser on the day. d) All lots must be paid for in cash, or in other manners acceptable to the auctioneers on the day of the sale and before delivery is given. e) Failure by the purchaser to comply with sub clause (a) and (b) shall entitle the auctioneer to cancel the sale and, at his discretion, to immediately re-offer the lot in question for sale by auction. 10. No transfer of lots or sub-sale by any purchaser is recognised by the auctioneers. Purchasers shall main liable under these conditions in respect of their own purchase under the sale. 11. Private treaty sales shall be subject to these conditions of sale where applicable. 12. All lots will be at the purchasers risk from the fall of the hammer: Purchasers are therefore advised to check that they have adequate insurance cover. 13. Purchasers who pay by cheque will not normally be permitted to remove goods until their cheques have cleared through the bank. Whether removal is permitted or not. Ownership of goods will not be deemed to pass to the purchaser until their cheque has cleared. 14. All lots must be cleared from the sale premises at the purchaser’s expense by the time stipulated or agreed by the auctioneers. 15. a) If a purchaser fails to comply with any of the preceding conditions the auctioneers may cause the lot in respect of which the failure is made to be resold by public sale without warranty or reserve and without notice to the purchaser.

b) If upon resale as aforesaid a lower price is obtained foe any lot that was obtained on the first sale, the difference in price together with all costs and charges attending the resale shall be a debt due from the purchaser in default at the first sale. c) Alternatively the auctioneers may, at their discretion, store the lot and recover reasonable charges for doing so from the purchaser. 16. Rescission Notwithstanding any terms of these conditions if, within 14 days after the sale, the auctioneers have received from the buyer of any lot notice in writing that in their view the lot is a deliberate forgery and that within 21 days after such notification the buyer returns the same to the auctioneers in the same condition as at the time of sale and by producing evidence, the burden of proof to be upon the buyer and if the auctioneers consider in the light of the entry in the catalogue, that the lot is a deliberate forgery than the sale of the lot will be rescinded and purchase price refunded. In the event of a dispute then the matter will be settled by arbitration. 17.
