The team behind 2013’s smash hit The Pirates of Penzance returns with another Gilbert & Sullivan comedy classic. A stellar cast, in the hands of director Martin Lloyd-Evans, brings the fun to life with a delicious mix of cheeky English Music Hall and exquisite Japanese tradition. The Mikado has decreed that flirting should be punishable by death. But when his son Nanki-Poo falls for the beautiful Yum-Yum, it looks like someone might be heading for the executioner’s block. Packed with anti-establishment silliness, and full of larger than life characters including self serving politicians that are all too recognisable today, this playful show features some of G&S’s most popular tunes, including Three little maids, Tit-willow and I’ve got a little list.

WORLD CLASS BALLET RETURNS TO BRISTOL

WED 29 JUN - SAT 2 JUL Wed - Sat 7.30pm Thu 2pm, Sat 2.30pm Birmingham Royal Ballet returns to The Bristol Hippodrome for the first time in almost 20 years with John Cranko’s undoubted masterpiece, The Taming of the Shrew, his adaptation of Shakespeare’s tale of mismatched marriage. In this sparkling comedy, independent and tempestuous Kate gives her suitor Petruchio considerably more than he bargained for. Cranko breathes new life into this witty battle of the sexes, set to a sparkling baroque score by Domenico Scarlatti, and achieves a memorable and truly funny mix of comedy, romance and bravura dancing. With a full company of 60 dancers and musicfrom the acclaimed Royal Ballet Sinfonia, this should prove a triumphant return to Bristol for the Company.

‘A FEEL GOOD MUSICAL WITH A SOUNDTRACK TO DIE FOR’ INDEPENDENT

Following its success in the West End, Las Vegas and on Broadway, Million Dollar Quartet is coming to Bristol! This worldwide smash-hit musical is inspired by the famous recording session that brought together rock ‘n’ roll icons Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins for the first and only time. On December 4, 1956, these four star musicians gathered at Sun Records in Memphis for what would be one of the greatest jam sessions ever. Million Dollar Quartet, written by Colin Escott and Floyd Mutrux, brings that legendary night to life, featuring a score of rock hits including Blue Suede Shoes, Fever, That’s All Right, Sixteen Tons, Great Balls of Fire, Walk the Line, Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On, Who Do You Love?, Matchbox, Folsom Prison Blues, Hound Dog and many more. Don’t miss your chance to discover the true story of one unforgettable night that made rock ‘n’ roll history!
