This delightfully inventive brand new Hansel & Gretel takes creative twists and turns inspired by the Grimm Brothers’ famous fairy tale - and the stories and imagination of the people of Scotland. A carousel of delicious treats from start to finish, Hansel & Gretel is full to the brim with magic and wit; with toys that come to life and a beautiful bewitching ballerina who is not at all as she seems. Scrumptiously surreal and with more than a sprinkle of festive magic - take an enchanting journey with Scotland’s national dance company this winter. It features well known and much loved songs such as I Whistle a Happy Tune, Getting to Know You, Hello Young Lovers and the hauntingly beautiful and emotive Something Wonderful. The story begins in Siam in 1862 when British widow Anna Leonowens and her young son Louis arrive at the Royal Palace in Bangkok having been summoned by the King to serve as tutor to his many wives and children. Although initially aghast at the regime in the Palace, Anna recognises that the King is a good man and agrees to help him change his image (the West regards him as a barbarian), whilst keeping a firm grip on their respective traditions and values. Their understanding and respect grows into what becomes a truly unique love story.

Unlike most of the other children at the orphanage, Annie believes that her parents are still alive and will one day return to claim her. So when Mr. Warbucks offers to adopt her, she asks the most powerful man in America to help find them and he agrees. Warbucks’ huge reward for Annie’s parents attracts the attention of con artists Rooster, Lily and the wicked Miss Hannigan, who hatch a plot to kidnap Annie and take the $50,000 reward. However, this classic family musical has a happy ending and the audience goes home with that feel-good factor.

Dance meets drama with powerful effect in Scottish Ballet’s iconic and vivid reinterpretation of Shakespeare’s greatest love story. Choreographer Krzysztof Pastor (Dutch National Ballet) has created a Romeo and Juliet for Scottish Ballet as timeless as love itself; set against a dramatic multimedia backdrop, his story of star-crossed lovers spans three decades of Italian life.

Classic, timeless and stylish, Sir David McVicar’s Madama Butterfly has been a firm favourite since it was first staged in 2000. Forgoing sentimentality to create a rich cast of characters with unflinchingly human characteristics, his production lays bare a hugely atmospheric, poignant story that still has the power to affect, over a century after it was first performed. Puccini’s sense of drama is second to none and Butterfly sees him doing what he does best – painting beautifully exotic pictures in sound that are dramatic, often hauntingly lyrical, and full of emotion. Korean soprano Hye-Youn Lee, one of The Independent on Sunday’s ‘Faces to Watch’ in 2013, and Anne Sophie Duprels (Manon 2009) share the role of Butterfly and José Ferrero (Tosca 2012) is Pinkerton.

‘A SUPERBLY VISCERAL VERSION OF GOLDING’S NOVEL. ASTONISHING, MEMORABLE’ THE GLASGOW HERALD

Based on the novel by WILLIAM GOLDING Music by TERRY DAVIES Sound design by PAUL GROOTHUIS Lighting design by CHRIS DAVEY Design by LEZ BROTHERSTON Choreographed by SCOTT AMBLER Adapted and Directed by MATTHEW BOURNE and SCOTT AMBLER

Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures has created some of the most successful shows of the last 25 years, including Swan Lake, Nutcracker! and the sell-out hit, Sleeping Beauty. Now the company unites a cast of New Adventures dancers with remarkable young talent from Glasgow, in an extraordinary adaptation of William Golding’s classic novel, Lord of the Flies choreographed by Olivier-nominated Scott Ambler. As the schoolboys find themselves abandoned in a deserted theatre, Golding’s legendary characters are brought to life with raw energy, emotional intensity and breathtaking performances. Civilisation crumbles and the rulebook is forgotten as the story builds to an electrifying climax. Chilling, beautiful and hugely entertaining, Lord of the Flies will enthral Bourne fans and inspire a generation of new audiences.

BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE

CORPORATE OPPORTUNITIES AND SEAT DEDICATION

TRANSFORMING THEATRE ROYAL GLASGOW FOR GENERATIONS TO COME Over the coming months, you’ll see some changes at Theatre Royal Glasgow which we hope will make your visits to the theatre even more enjoyable. Work is well underway to improve the theatre’s public spaces by building a dramatic new entrance that will house fantastic facilities and greatly improve access to all levels. With new lifts, spacious foyers, better bars, more toilets and improved air-flow in the auditorium, we’re bringing the theatre firmly into the 21st century. The work will be complete in time for the Commonwealth Games in 2014, and the theatre will be open as usual except for a short period from February to April 2014 to enable the final joining up of the new extension with the current theatre. During Summer 2013, the seats in the Stalls and Dress Circle have been re-positioned. We hope you enjoy the improved sightlines, leg room and comfort. Look out for the information leaflets in the theatre and keep an eye on the Scottish Opera website at scottishopera.org.uk and atgtickets.com/glasgow for regular updates. Supported by
