Welcome to What’s On! ‘It’s enormously exciting and a real privilege to take up the role of Theatre Director of the Palace and Opera House. These extraordinary theatres have played an important part in the lives of Mancunians for generations.’
So many firsts happen inside them – our first musical, first opera, first dance performance and, so often with people I speak to, the first time experiencing live theatre. As a returning Manc I’m excited to be part of the fast-changing, dynamic and ambitious city and region we are today. The Palace and the Opera House sit right at the heart of our city and our aim is to reimagine these historic theatres for Manchester now. We start with great shows. The Palace is where we celebrate the best of the West End and Broadway in the heart of the north. The huge stage at the Palace makes it the natural home for world class musical theatre week after week, with Miss Saigon arriving in March and, in the autumn, the RSC’s Matilda on its first trip out of London.
Over the last couple of years we have begun investing in renovating and refurbishing our two stunning theatres. As with any historic building we have to pay attention to the less glamorous structural aspects, the things that keep us warm, safe and comfortable. But if you haven’t been to the Palace recently, come and enjoy our gorgeous bar refurbishments (and take a sneaky look at our loos!) While you enjoy the performances over the next few months, we’ll be working hard to make sure the future is bright, the shows exceptional and the unique history and importance of these great theatres are brought to life in the original modern city that is Manchester today. Come and join us for the journey. Sheena Wrigley, Theatre Director
With a new sense of adventure down on Quay Street, we are starting to explore fresh ideas for the Opera House - new dramas, quality music and off-beat comedy. In 2017, we launched two brand new musicals and, following the success of The Band and Bat Out of Hell, we will be unveiling two more world premieres later in the year so watch this space!

A thrilling new production of the most iconic story in American literature. Set in the Great Depression, Of Mice And Men is a powerful portrait of the human spirit and a heartbreaking testament to the bonds of friendship. This landmark play by John Steinbeck tells the story of George and Lennie, two migrant ranch workers who dream of owning their own ranch. Still painfully relevant to modern times, this is a moving story about trying to hold on to your dreams.

‘A TRIUMPHANT EVENING... UNMISSABLE AND UNBEATABLE.’ THE S P EC TATOR
Written by Willy Russell, the legendary Blood Brothers tells the captivating and moving tale of twins who, separated at birth, grow up on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with fateful consequences.
Lyn Paul returns to the iconic role she has played many times in the West End, in fact she was the show’s final Mrs Johnstone when it closed at the Phoenix Theatre in 2012. Lyn also starred in Bill Kenwright’s tour of Cabaret with Will Young in 2013 and rose to fame as a member of the pop group New Seekers whose numerous number one hits include I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing which sold over 20 million copies. The superb score includes Bright New Day, Marilyn Monroe and the emotionally charged hit Tell Me It’s Not True.

Few musicals have received quite such acclaim as the multi-award winning Blood Brothers. Bill Kenwright’s production surpassed 10,000 performances in London’s West End, one of only three musicals ever to achieve that milestone. It has been affectionately christened the ‘Standing Ovation Musical’, as inevitably it ‘BRINGS THE AUDIENCE CHEERING TO ITS FEET AND ROARING ITS APPROVAL’ – The Daily Mail.

How to Turn Chaos Into
COMEDY GOLD The Meteoric Rise of The Play That Goes Wrong
What started out as an intimate show in a 60-seat theatre above a London pub has grown into an international comedy sensation, playing 35 countries and seen live by nearly 2 million people. Actor-writer Henry Lewis, co-founder of Mischief Theatre with a group of friends from drama school, explains how The Play That Goes Wrong struck comedy gold. The Play That Goes Wrong took a simple idea – an amateur dramatic company attempting to put on a creaky old murder mystery – and embellished it with a succession of perfectly timed sight gags, misplaced props and wonky scenery, producing a mounting tide of hysteria in the audience. “We knew right from the early days that The Play That Goes Wrong worked with audiences because a lot of people came to see it at the Old Red Lion in Islington and laughed their heads off. Obviously, we had no idea then what the future held in store.” The creators of the show could hardly have guessed that it would prove to be as popular in New York, Abu Dhabi, Paris, Norway and Hong Kong as it was in Islington. Nor that it would go on to win 11 international awards.
A P R I L – J U LY 2 0 1 8
“Our comedy has a universal appeal, being about physical clowning,” says Lewis. “We’ve all worked together for a long time now so we have developed a good working relationship and a shared language.” The success of The Play That Goes Wrong led to spin-off shows Peter Pan Goes Wrong and The Comedy About a Bank Robbery (still running in the West End after two years), as well as two star-studded Christmas TV specials, with David Suchet, Diana Rigg and Derek Jacobi, and an appearance on The Royal Variety Performance, with Kylie Minogue. “Kylie wasn’t available for the dress rehearsal, so the first time I met her was onstage during the performance. I had to open a door to find her standing there. Luckily, I opened the door and there she was.” Was he nervous about taking The Play That Goes Wrong to Broadway? “We’d had lots of American tourists coming to see the show in the West End, and we had a lovely review of the London production in The New York Times, so we had a pretty good idea it would work on Broadway. We also had a lot of celebrity visitors saying nice things – Paul McCartney, Christian Slater, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Thompson.”
