WELCOME TO THE SUNDERLAND EMPIRE AND YOUR WHAT’S ON GUIDE…
RED SKY BALL
Since the beginning of 2017 we have been raising money for our nominated charity Red Sky Ball. All proceeds are donated to the Children’s Heart Unit at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle, which treats over 300 children every year, 10% of whom are from the Wearside area. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank our customers, who have generously donated through bucket collections or by attending one of our fundraising events, as well as local businesses who have been incredibly supportive of these events.
’Tis the season to be jolly – and we have a lot to be happy about over the coming months! From the wonderful pantomime, Jack and the Beanstalk, to the greatest Ogre of them all, Shrek, with his very own hilarious musical. West End favourites, Beautiful – The Carole King Musical, Jersey Boys and Matilda are all highlights, plus the return of old favourite Blood Brothers will have you reaching for those hankies once again. So pour yourself a glass of mulled wine and enjoy our latest What’s On guide.

Few musicals have received quite such acclaim as the multi award-winning Blood Brothers. Bill Kenwright’s production surpassed 10,000 performances in London’s West End, one of only three musicals ever to achieve that milestone. It has been affectionately christened the ‘STANDING OVATION MUSICAL ’ as it inevitably, ‘BRINGS THE AUDIENCE CHEERING TO ITS FEET AND ROARING ITS APPROVAL.’ –
MONDAY – SATURDAY 7.30PM
Lyn Paul returns to the iconic role she has played many times in the West End, in fact she was the show’s final Mrs Johnstone when it closed at the Phoenix Theatre in 2012. Lyn also starred in Cabaret with Will Young in 2013 and rose to fame as a member of the pop group New Seekers whose numerous number one hits include I’d Like To Teach The World To Sing which sold over 20 million copies.

‘ONE OF THE GREATEST MUSICALS OF OUR TIME.’ DAILY MAIL
Wicked has been casting its magical spell across the world for over a decade and continues to break records at London’s Apollo Victoria Theatre, where it is already the 15th longest-running show in West End theatre history. After 10 record-breaking years in London’s West End and having played in 11 countries around the world to over 7 million people, the National Theatre’s acclaimed play War Horse comes to Sunderland in 2019. At the outbreak of World War One, Joey, young Albert’s beloved horse, is sold to the Cavalry and shipped to France. He’s soon caught up in enemy fire, and fate takes him on an extraordinary journey, serving on both sides before finding himself alone in no man’s land. Albert, who remained on his parents’ Devon farm, cannot forget Joey. Though still not old enough to enlist he embarks on a treacherous mission to find him and bring him home. This powerfully moving and imaginative drama is a show of phenomenal inventiveness. At its heart are astonishing life-sized horses by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company, who bring breathing, galloping, charging horses to thrilling life on stage.
