THE INDEPENDENT

The critically acclaimed Chichester Festival Theatre production of Goodnight Mister Tom comes to Sunderland for one week only. Now a modern classic, Michelle Magorian’s wonderfully uplifting tale is brought gloriously to life in a brand new stage adaptation by David Wood. Set during the dark and dangerous build up to the Second World War, Goodnight Mister Tom follows sad William Beech, who is evacuated to the idyllic English countryside and builds a remarkable and moving friendship with the elderly recluse Tom Oakley. All seems perfect until William is devastatingly summoned by his mother back to London. Winner of the Guardian Children’s Fiction Prize and commended for the Carnegie Medal, this brand new production marks the 30th Anniversary of the publication of the novel. Now a world-wide literary favourite and BAFTA award-winning TV film (starring John Thaw), Goodnight Mister Tom continues to inspire audiences and bring generations together.

A run-in with Palace guards leads young tearaway Aladdin into a whirlwind of adventure and romance, involving unbelievable riches, love at first sight, treachery, and of course a magic lamp, and all that it contains. Duped into helping an evil Maghrib, Aladdin finds himself trapped in a cave for three days and nights, with no light and nothing to eat. But it is only when he attempts to light the old lamp he’s found, that his real adventure begins! With a live orchestra, sumptuous set and costumes, this UK premiere of David Bintley’s magical tale of love, trickery and triumph promises to be a real treat. And if you enjoyed Birmingham Royal Ballet’s Swan Lake you’ll love Aladdin - it’s fun for all the family! 12
