COMES TO GLASGOW MON 3 - SAT 8 JUN
Building for the Future
CONTENTS BIRDS OF A FEATHER 4 Tue 16 - Sat 20 April
TRANSFORMING THEATRE ROYAL GLASGOW FOR GENERATIONS TO COME Over the next 18 months, you’ll see some changes at Theatre Royal Glasgow which we hope will make your visits to the theatre even more enjoyable. Work is already underway to improve the theatre’s public spaces by building a dramatic new entrance that will house fantastic new facilities and greatly improve access to all levels. With new lifts, spacious new foyers, better bars, more toilets, and improved air-flow and sightlines in the auditorium, we’re bringing the theatre firmly into the 21st century. When you next visit the theatre, you’ll notice that the Café Royal ‘wing’ has been demolished to make way for the new building. We’ve tried to minimise the impact on our audiences, but there will be some temporary changes to how you use the theatre during the construction period. The work will be complete in time for the Commonwealth Games in 2014, and the theatre will be open as usual except for a short period from February - April 2014 to enable the final ‘joining up’ of the new extension with the current theatre.

The girls are back! One of BBC TV’s most popular and fondlyremembered sitcoms comes to the stage with all three of its original leading cast members, Pauline Quirke, Linda Robson and Lesley Joseph. Birds Of A Feather ran on the BBC for nearly ten years throughout the 1990s becoming a massive hit right from the word go and remains not only a classic comedy but also, as a female-centred long-running series, a truly rare gem. Now the three stars of the TV series are re-united on stage to re-create their adored characters, sisters Sharon Theodopolopoudos and Tracy Stubbs and their sex-mad neighbour, Dorien Green, in a brand-new show created especially for the theatre by The Comedy Theatre Company, producers of the highly-successful tour of Victoria Wood’s dinnerladies. Don't miss this chance to see Birds Of A Feather live on stage!

Presented exclusively by Scottish Ballet, Matthew Bourne’s Highland Fling is a wonderfully imaginative reworking of the classic romantic ballet La Sylphide. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to rediscover this 'EXTRAVAGANTLY WITTY' (The Independent) Glasgow tale brought home by Scotland’s national dance company. Highland Fling follows the antics of James – a young Glaswegian with sex and love and rock and roll on his mind. His addiction to excess finds him in the fateful company of a beguiling gothic fairy who leads him on a downward spiral into a weird and wonderful world. Highland Fling was originally produced by New Adventures. ‘IT IS, IT IS A GLORIOUS THING’
EXPLOSIVE NEW DANCE
‘REMARKABLE TALENT’ Gilbert and Sullivan as it’s meant to be – pure, uncomplicated fun, performed to the highest standards. This new D’Oyly Carte and Scottish Opera co-production brings the humour bang up to date with a Python-esque twinkle. A vibrant, stylish and hilarious romp through one of G&S’s finest scores, this show has everything you could want from a good night out. A young man bound by an overactive sense of duty, a softhearted pirate king with a hopeless band of rogues at his side, a beautiful young girl, a very modern major-general and an ineffectual bevy of policemen…add a plot hinging on the technicalities of having a birthday on the 29th of February and we’re just about there. What could possibly go wrong? Gilbert’s high speed patter is razor sharp and Sullivan’s score sees him at the top of his game, with the catchy, witty tunes for which he is so well known. The fantastic ensemble cast includes a horde of young, fresh talent as well as G&S stalwarts Steven Page as The Pirate King and Richard Suart as the Modern Major-General. 6

BY DAVID GREIG DIRECTED BY ROXANA SILBERT FEATURING SIOBHAN REDMOND Macbeth is dead, long live the King. Under cover of night, an English army has swept through the landscape, killed the tyrant and taken the seat of power. Attempting to restore peace and put in place a new ruler, Siward, the commanding officer, is beset by a brutal guerrilla uprising and simmering discontent amongst his own inexperienced troops. Struggling to grasp the alien customs and politics of this harsh country, he finds himself drawn towards Macbeth’s powerful widow in search of someone to share his burden of responsibility. Increasingly isolated from his own men and Scottish allies alike, his efforts to restore order appear futile as the situation spins out of control. David Greig’s exhilarating play is a vision of one man’s attempt to restore peace in a country ravaged by war. 14

Scotland’s national dance company invites you to an evening of tremendous contrast. 100 years after the original production revolutionised the world of dance and music, Christopher Hampson’s challenging reinvention of The Rite of Spring examines the themes of violence, obedience and domination in this now infamous story of remorseless human sacrifice. Stravinsky’s exhilarating score performed live by the full Scottish Ballet Orchestra. In stark contrast Kenneth MacMillan’s Elite Syncopations is an irresistible carnival of colourful characters, psychedelic body-skimming costumes and vibrant ragtime music performed live on stage by a 12-piece band.
