How to Turn Chaos Into
COMEDY GOLD The Meteoric Rise of The Play That Goes Wrong
The Play That Goes Wrong took a simple idea - an amateur dramatic company attempting to put on a creaky old murder mystery - and embellished it with a succession of perfectly timed sight gags, misplaced props and wonky scenery, producing a mounting tide of hysteria in the audience.
Photography by Robert Day
What started out as an intimate show in a 60seat theatre above a London pub has grown into an international comedy sensation, playing 35 countries and seen live by nearly 2 million people. Actor-writer Henry Lewis, co-founder of Mischief Theatre with a group of friends from drama school, explains how The Play That Goes Wrong struck comedy gold.
“We knew right from the early days that The Play That Goes Wrong worked with audiences because a lot of people came to see it at the Old Red Lion in Islington and laughed their heads off. Obviously, we had no idea then what the future held in store.” The creators of the show could hardly have guessed that it would prove to be as popular in New York, Abu Dhabi, Paris, Norway and Hong Kong as it was in Islington. Nor that it would go on to win 11 international awards. “Our comedy has a universal appeal, being about physical clowning,” says Lewis. “We’ve all
8 | ATGTICKETS.COM
worked together for a long time now so we have developed a good working relationship and a shared language.” The success of The Play That Goes Wrong led to spin-off shows Peter Pan Goes Wrong and The Comedy About a Bank Robbery (still running in the West End after two years), as well as two star-studded Christmas TV specials, with David Suchet, Diana Rigg and Derek Jacobi, and an appearance on The Royal Variety Performance, with Kylie Minogue. “Kylie wasn’t available for the dress rehearsal, so the first time I met her was onstage during the performance. I had to open a door to find her standing there. Luckily, I opened the door and there she was.” Was he nervous about taking The Play That Goes Wrong to Broadway? “We’d had lots of American tourists coming to see the show in the West End, and we had a lovely review of the London production in The New York Times, so we had a pretty good idea it would work on Broadway. We also had a lot of celebrity visitors saying nice things - Paul McCartney, Christian Slater, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Thompson.”

Why Pace
LOVES TO PARTY Hairspray is a Ball for TV Comedian Norman Pace
12 | ATGTICKETS.COM
A P R I L – J U LY 2 0 1 8
Norman Pace is perhaps best known as half of the comedy duo Hale and Pace, famous for sketch shows and characters such as nightclub bouncers the Two Rons. But alongside his television persona, Norman has also forged a successful career in the theatre. He’s currently playing the part of Tracy Turnblad’s joke shop-owning dad Wilbur in the UK tour of Hairspray. We found a few minutes to chat with him about being back onstage and the delights of the infectious, ever-popular 1960s musical. How have you found being on the road with Hairspray? It’s been fascinating and tiring, but more than anything it has been invigorating. Coming to the end of the show every night and seeing the audiences on their feet cheering and smiling makes everything worth it. What attracted you to the role of Wilbur? Wilbur is a fascinating character - he is quirky, wise, strange. I just seem to turn into him as soon as the costume is on. I thought this role, the role of Wilbur, was right for me. I looked at it on paper and it immediately reflected what I’m good at, what I think I do best. I just knew I really wanted to do this. What have you enjoyed about being back on the stage? I think it is the party-like atmosphere, especially with something like Hairspray. So often I can walk into the theatre feeling low or miserable, even tired - especially on a Wednesday matinee, where we have to be at the theatre for 12, which sometimes feels like it’s too early to be jumping around, dancing and singing. But by the time
A P R I L – J U LY 2 0 1 8
the show has finished I can’t help but, with the adrenalin running through my body, feel like I have had the best time and it’s a joy to do it. Why do you think Hairspray remains so popular? I think a show like Hairspray has such an enduring appeal because it’s the best night out in the theatre that you can have. Certainly, that’s what I have found the audiences have said. It is beautifully structured, incredibly well written, very energetic, great songs and it’s funny to boot! Do you have a preference between performing live and recording for television and film? I prefer stage. It is the party atmosphere and if you get a mistake then you have another seven chances that week to make it right. There is a lot more pressure with television - the pressure is enormous when the camera is right there in front of you, in your face. You have very little rehearsal and there is a shorter time to give a convincing character performance, every time. There isn’t the freedom to learn, discover the character and the different ways you can do it, like onstage. What was it that inspired you to go into musical theatre? It was a natural thing for me to go into musical theatre really; I have a background in singing and acting. I used to sing in choirs and Gilbert and Sullivan operas when I was an amateur. I learnt that if you want to survive in this business, you have to use everything you know and since I can sing, I had to use that in my career.

SATURDAY 10TH – SATURDAY 17TH NOVEMBER
Let the memory live again. Based on T. S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, the show is set amongst a larger-than-life junkyard playground and is alive with our favourite feline characters including Rum Tum Tugger, Mr. Mistoffelees, Macavity, Jennyanydots, Old Deuteronomy, Grizabella and Skimbleshanks. CATS is one of the longest-running shows in West End and Broadway history and to celebrate Andrew Lloyd Webber’s 70th birthday, Pick Me Up are delighted to present the York premiere of this brilliant song and dance spectacular. Director and choreographer Ali Kirkham, Musical Director Jessica Douglas
