IVAL CO-CHAIRS

Writer and director, Amma Asante, began her career as a child actor. She made her writing/directing debut with the 2004 feature film, A Way of Life, which won her 17 international awards. Amma’s latest project, Belle, which tells the story of Dido Elizabeth Belle, the illegitimate mixed-race daughter of a naval captain who is raised in London by her greatuncle Lord Mansfield, was screened in the U.S. at the 2014 Athena Film Festival.

Diane Levin P ’13 has been an educational advocate for the past twenty-five years, serving as a Board member of the Oakwood School, IMPACT Theatre Group in Harlem, and the Parents Council at Barnard. Along with her producing partner, Robbie Tollin, Levin produced a web series, Georgia, for the WIGS channel. She also is a producer of The Zookeeper’s Wife, written by Diane Ackerman and adapted by Angela Workman.

Julie Parker Benello ’92 co-founded Chicken & Egg Pictures in 2005 with a shared belief that powerful women storytellers can help build movements for justice, equity, and health. Films of note include 2012 Academy Award® winner Saving Face, After Tiller, The Invisible War, and Pariah. Benello co-founded and is a Managing Director of Gamechanger Films, which invests in narrative features by women directors. Debra Martin Chase is an Emmy-nominated and Peabody Award-winning television and motion picture producer whose company, Martin Chase Productions, is affiliated with the Walt Disney Company. Her producing credits include The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, The Princess Diaries, and the American Girl movie franchises. Chase was a producing partner with the late Whitney Houston and ran Denzel Washington’s production company, where she produced Courage Under Fire and The Preacher’s Wife, among others. Dan Cogan is the Executive Director and Co-Founder of Impact Partners, which since 2007, has been involved in the financing of over 45 documentary films that promote social change, including the Oscar®-winning The Cover, and the Oscar®-nominated films: The Garden, Hell and Back Again, and How to Survive a Plague. Cogan also co-founded Gamechanger Films, which invests in narrative features by women directors.

Jon Levin P ’13 is a Motion Picture Literary Agent at Creative Artists Agency (CAA). Since joining CAA in 1979, Levin has worked on behalf of such agency clients as actors Brad Pitt, Will Smith, Robert Downey, Jr., Tom Hanks, Cate Blanchett, Natalie Portman; directors Ron Howard, Robert Zemeckis, and Spike Jonze, and a number of studios and authors. Regina K. Scully is the Founder and CEO of the Artemis Rising Foundation and is the Athena Film Festival’s Founding Sponsor. Following a long career in journalism and public relations, Scully began working in film. She has executive produced such films as Boyhood Shadows, The Invisible War, The Big Picture, and Miss Representation, which deal with such critical issues as childhood abuse, rape in the U.S. Military, childhood obesity, and the negative effects of media on young girls and women. Rachel Weisz is an award-winning actress who is known for portraying women of incredible spirit and intelligence. The Laura Ziskin Lifetime Achievement Award is given to a woman in the film industry whose leadership demonstrates vision and courage and sets a standard for other women to emulate. One of Hollywood’s leading independent producers and studio executives, Laura Ziskin (1950–2011) used her talents, energies, and standing to make award-winning movies and to improve the lives and health of women. Her producing credits included a string of hits including Murphy’s Romance, No Way Out, and Pretty Woman, which she executive produced in 1990. In 1994, Ziskin was named President of Fox 2000 where she released such award-winning films as Courage Under Fire, One Fine Day, The Thin Red Line, and one of the most successful franchises in Hollywood, the Spider-Man films. After being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004, Ziskin along with Katie Couric and Sherry Lansing, created Stand Up to Cancer, a research and advocacy organization. Ziskin produced the historic Stand Up to Cancer television show that was simultaneously televised on all major networks, raising millions for the organization, and she told her story repeatedly, so that women suffering from cancer would know that they are not alone.

About The Laura Ziskin Lifetime Achievement Award

Jodie Foster’s stunning performances as a rape survivor in The Accused and as Special Agent Clarice Starling in the hit thriller The Silence of the Lambs earned her two Academy Awards® for Best Actress and a reputation as one of the most critically acclaimed actresses of her generation. Foster began her career at age three, appearing as “The Coppertone Girl” in the television commercial. She then went on to become a regular on a number of television series. In total, Foster has appeared in more than 40 films, including recent films Carnage and The Brave One, for which she received Golden Globe nominations. For her role in The Silence of the Lambs, Foster was also awarded a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, and several Film Critics awards. For her role in Taxi Driver, Foster received her first Oscar® nomination and awards from the National Society of Film Critics and the L.A. Film Critics. In 2013, Foster was presented with the Cecil B. DeMille Award from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for Lifetime Achievement. Foster made her motion picture directorial debut in 1991 with the highly acclaimed Little Man Tate, in which she also starred. In 1995, Foster directed her second film, Home for the Holidays, which she also produced. Her most recent film, The Beaver, starring Mel Gibson, was released in 2011. Foster founded Egg Pictures in 1992 and the company produced Nell, for which Foster earned an Academy Award® nomination for Best Actress; Home for the Holidays; and the Showtime telefilm The Baby Dance, which received a Peabody Award, four Emmy® nominations and three Golden Globe nominations. Her upcoming directing project will be the thriller Money Maker starring George Clooney and Julia Roberts.

Sheila Nevins President, HBO Documentary Films Sheila Nevins, President, HBO Documentary Films, is responsible for overseeing the development and production of all documentaries for HBO, HBO2, and Cinemax. As an executive producer or producer, she has received 28 Primetime Emmy® Awards, 32 News and Documentary Emmys®, and 40 George Foster Peabody Awards. During her tenure, HBO’s critically acclaimed documentaries have gone on to win 23 Academy Awards®. Nevins has been honored with numerous prestigious career achievement awards including, the 2009 Governor’s Award from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, a 2008 Gotham Awards Tribute, a 2005 Emmy® Lifetime Achievement Award, and a personal Peabody in 1999. In 2000, Nevins was inducted into Broadcasting & Cable’s Hall of Fame. She is a member of the Writers Guild of America, the Producers Guild of America and The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. She is a proud Barnard Alumna.

Gina PrinceBythewood Writer, Producer, Director Gina Prince-Bythewood began her career writing and directing the widely-acclaimed feature film Love & Basketball, winning the 2000 Independent Spirit Award for Best First Screenplay and a Humanitas Prize. In 2008, she wrote and directed the celebrated adaptation of the best-selling novel, The Secret Life of Bees, which won two People’s Choice Awards and two NAACP Image Awards. Her third feature, Beyond the Lights, which New York Times film critic, Manohla Dargis called one of the ten best film of 2014, was released in November. Prince-Bythewood has written and produced for network television series such as A Different World, Felicity, South Central, and Sweet Justice before making the transition to directing. She also won a Community Service Emmy for her work with the Rap-it-Up campaign.

2015 Athena Film Festival Awards Academy Award®-Winning Producer Cathy Schulman, President of Mandalay Pictures, is a part of an elite group of women who head self-financed production companies. In 2015, Schulman will produce the film Whatever Makes You Happy, based on the novel by William Sutcliffe. Recently, she produced Horns, The Voices, Dark Places, based on Gillian Flynn’s best-selling novel, and The Kids Are All Right, which was nominated for an Academy Award®. Prior to joining Mandalay, Schulman produced Crash, released in 2005 by Lionsgate, which received Academy Awards® for Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Editing. A consistent advocate of worldwide social causes, Schulman produced the documentary Darfur Now in 2007. Through Bull’s Eye Entertainment, which she founded with Tom Nunan, Schulman produced The Illusionist in 2006, winning an Oscar® nomination in cinematography. Schulman is the President of Women In Film, a Board Member of Film Independent, and has served as a council member of the Producers Guild of America. She is a member of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences.

To help remedy the striking lack of strong female characters in The movies, the Athena Film Festival has created the Athena List, an annual slate of screenplays with strong female protagonists that have yet to be made into films. Selected by a group of industry professionals, the 2015 winners are recognized during the festival Awards ceremony.

Three hours outside of Addis Ababa, Hirut, a bright 14-year-old girl is kidnapped on her way home from school. Hirut bravely grabs a rifle and tries to escape, but ends up shooting her would-be husband. For her village, the practice of abduction into marriage is common and one of Ethiopia’s oldest traditions. Meaza Ashenafi, a young lawyer, arrives from the city to represent Hirut and argue that she acted in self-defense. Meaza boldly embarks on a collision course between civil authority and customary law, risking her legal-aid practice to save Hirut’s life.

With her sharp and witty radio show Dear White People and her self-published book entitled Ebony and Ivy, Sam causes a stir among the administration and student body, calling out racist micro-aggressions on campus. When a white student and son of the school’s President and his club come up with a black face theme for their annual party, tensions overflow. All at once everyone finds themselves on different sides of a race war fighting each other and themselves.

Six hundred years ago, in the aftermath of a bloody confrontation between her Innu tribe, and the Inuit (the “men from the Land of Ice”), Maïna fulfills a death-bed promise to her friend Matsii, following the trail of her enemies to retrieve Matsii’s 11-year-old son, Nipki, who has been captured by the Inuit. Maïna is taken captive herself and forced to travel with the Inuit to the Land of Ice.

Instead of visiting Fiji like everybody else, Kym, an Australian tourist, decides to travel to Bosnia. Her guidebook leads her to Višegrad, a small town steeped in history, on the border of Bosnia and Serbia. After a night of insomnia in the ‘romantic’ Hotel Vilina Vlas, Kym discovers what happened there during the war. No longer an ordinary tourist, her life will never be the same.

She sings in a Montreal choir with other disabled adults, where she meets and falls in love with the dashingly handsome Martin. The bliss of first love is interrupted, however, by Martin’s interfering mother, who worries that special needs individuals aren’t sufficiently fit for romantic relationships. What emerges in Louise Archambault’s sweet, unassuming, and confidently directed film is a portrait of a young woman fighting, in her own way, for acceptance and independence, and for her right to experience life’s highs and lows– with joy, pain, confusion and eventual understanding.

Today, its website, makers.com hosts thousands of 3-5 minute stories that are meant to entertain and educate, fill in the gaps of women’s history, and inspire historic work on behalf of women. Friday, February 6, 6PM Held Auditorium, 304 Barnard Hall Director: Rex Miller Documentary, 2014 [US] English, 77 minutes Althea Gibson, a truant from the rough streets of Harlem, emerged as a most unlikely queen of the highly segregated tennis world of the 1950’s. Gibson was the first African-American to play and win at Wimbledon and Forest Hills, a decade before the great Arthur Ashe, only to be shunned by the tennis establishment. The film details her roots as a sharecropper’s daughter, her family’s migration north to Harlem, her mentoring from Sugar Ray Robinson, David Dinkins, and others, and her rise to fame that thrusts her unwillingly into the glare of the early Civil Rights Movement. BRITTNEY GRINER: LIFESIZE Director: Melissa Johnson Documentary, 2014 [US] English, 16 minutes This short film, screened before Althea, is a rite of passage story of basketball center Brittney Griner’s inaugural season with the Zhejiang Golden Bulls. Director Melissa Johnson collaborated with espnW’s Kate Fagan, to chronicle Griner as she moves from a celebrated kid with unlimited potential to a self-reliant adult with capacity to make her championship dreams a reality.

When an older man sexually and violently confronts the group, two of the teens defend themselves and the man is stabbed. The women are rounded up and charged with gang assault, assault, and attempted murder. But achieving such a lofty ambition is easier said than done for an Iranian girl.

Friday, February 6, 6PM Diana Center Event Oval, Diana LL100 For the last fifty years Twyla Tharp ‘63 has and continues to use moving image technology as a tool in her dance-making process. She has also created screen specific choreography for groundbreaking movies such as Hair, Ragtime, Amadeus, and White Nights. Her television credits include the award-winning Making Television Dance for PBS and The Catherine Wheel, which she both choreographed and directed for the BBC as well as “Baryshnikov by Tharp” for which she won two Primetime Emmy Awards. Since the 1960s, Tharp has used moving image technology to document her creative process, assembling an archive of over 4,000 hours that records not only her work as a choreographer but also her evolving physicality as a dance artist. Tharp will join Kathryn Kolbert, co-founder of the Athena Film Festival, for a conversation and will share clips from her career.

Kathryn Kolbert is the Constance Hess Williams ’66 Director of the Athena Center for Leadership Studies at Barnard College, an interdisciplinary center dedicated to advancing women’s leadership. A publicinterest attorney, journalist, and not-for-profit executive, Kolbert has been recognized by The National Law Journal as one of the “100 Most Influential Lawyers in America.” In 1992, Kolbert argued the landmark case of Planned Parenthood v. Casey before the U.S. Supreme Court and has been credited with saving Roe v. Wade with what Jeffrey Toobin has called “one of the most audacious litigation strategies in Supreme Court history.”
