INSIDER TIP
Athens is home to America’s first Garden Club. This garden heritage is clear in all the lovely garden nooks and paths throughout town. INSIDER TIP April is a recommended month for green thumbs to visit Athens. Check dates for Plantapalooza plant sales and the Piedmont Gardeners’ Garden Tour.
The State Botanical Garden of Georgia has been named an Important Birding Area by the Georgia Audobon Society.

The State Botanical Garden of Georgia is a 313-acre preserve with five miles of trails, a stunning tropical conservatory, and themed gardens showcasing native and international flora. Special events and programs are held year-round. Linger in the café and gift shop. You’ll also find the Garden Club of Georgia State Headquarters and the lovely Day Chapel. See horticulturists in action at the Trial Gardens at UGA, as they determine the “best of the best” plants for our region’s high heat and humidity. Winners such as Homestead Verbena receive the Athens Select label and go on to sell in garden centers. Athens’ 19th century house museums feature authentic period gardens that were a large part of Antebellum lifestyles. The T.R.R. Cobb garden was recreated based on records from the original owner, and the Taylor-Grady House garden is a classic formal design. The Church-Waddel-Brumby House garden is a quiet spot right downtown, and the WareLyndon House is undergoing its own garden project.
