Where is the zoo?
Just a short drive away from the city you'll find the Attica Zoo Park
How much do I tip?
Give nothing to cab drivers, 5-10% at restaurants.
At what time do the clubs close? There is no specific plan.
How come you stay up so late? It’s in our blood. Also, it is cooler at night.
Do you ever get drunk?
All the time. But you can’t tell.
What is the worst thing about tourists?
They get obviously drunk.
Which is the area that gathers all the fun?
You can’t go wrong around Syntagma or at the Athens Riviera (from Faliro to Varkiza).
Why do the guards in Syntagma Square stand still?
It’s a matter of pride.
How come they are all good-looking?
Only the tallest most good-looking soldiers can serve as guards in Syntagma.
And what if a guard has to go to the toilet?
He isn’t allowed to. But one can wear a diaper.
A.V. teAM
What happens if I tickle a guard?
He will make a slight (almost invisible) gesture with his finger to the soldier nearby and he will take care of you.
Can I feed the pigeons?
Please don’t. They are bulimic.
Why can’t I flush the toilet-paper down the toilet?
You don’t want the whole Athens sewage system to collapse.
How much is the cab fare from the airport to the city center? It depends. From 45 to 50 euro.
I am free for the weekend. What do you suggest I do?
Take the boat and visit an island like all normal people. Try Hydra and Aegina from Piraeus, Andros from Rafina, Tzia from Lavrion.
Where is everybody from 3-6 pm?
Somewhere cool, either hugging the air-conditioner or by the sea.
What’s inside the Greek coffee? It tastes like sand. Hey, either drink it or stop complaining.
How come coffee is so expensive in Greece?
The coffee shop owners also charge for the chair. It can take a Greek two hours to drink a frappé.
What’s a frappé coffee?
Instant coffee. Shaken, not stirred.
Why are there almost no Greeks at a McDonald’s?
We prefer the local Everest of Goody’s.
Name one thing that’s unique about Athens.
Summer open-air cinemas. Try Aigli (in Zappeion), Boboniera (in Kifissia), Dexameni (in Kolonaki).
I am really bored of museums. I only want to visit one.
Benaki Museum is elegant and covers it all. The National Archaeological Museum is one of the most important of its kind in the world.
Where do I walk the dog?
Along Dionysiou Areopagitou Street under the Acropolis.
Where is your Chinatown?
Around Koumoundourou Square (on some maps listed as Plateia Eleftherias).
Jesus, you smoke too much. We know.
Do you still break plates at bouzoukia?
No, we throw flowers at each other. Rather expensive habit, though.
I too want to go to bouzoukia. Don’t go alone. Make some Greek friends, they will take you.
What’s the best way to end a night of partying?
Eat something at the Central Market on Athinas Street.
Where do I get breakfast?
Good luck! Greeks never have breakfast. We go straigth to brunch (usually it is just a cheese pie).
I want one, too.
Ariston on Voulis Street sells the best.
Don’t leave. I have some more questions.
Don’t panic. Yannis Nenes, a celebrated anthropologist who researches the Greek traditions and behavior, explains everything in the following pages.
WELCOME TO ATHENS
While Greece is faithful to what people associate with it – summertime, spotless beaches, turquoise waters – these are only some of the treasures it has to offer, and the capital city is no exception. Athens has been an epicenter of history and culture for millennia, and it’s crucial to get a sense of its spirit during your stay. It is a place of contrasts that has something to offer everyone. ATHENS Athens might look poor in aspects but there is a sexy vibe in it. Industrial spaces have turned into art venues, performance studios, places where much is happening. The hype is art and emerging artists are fleeing from all over Europe.
ANAFIOTIKA Tucked away beneath the Acropolis lies the picturesque neighborhood of Anafiotika. A maze of whitewashed houses with colorful doors and bougainvillea cascading from balconies, it feels like a little piece of the Cycladic islands right in the heart of Athens.
BEAD BRACELETS Bead bracelets or rosaries are very popular, especially among younger men and tourists. Places like Greece, Turkey, and Italy have a strong tradition of handcrafted jewelry, and bead bracelets are a part of that. Bracelets might opt for simpler styles like evil eye bracelets with a blue eye charm for protection against negativity, macrames made with natural fibers or leather bands.
BOUZOUKIA Lively tavern music venues. It used to be the ultimate Greek night-out. Nowdays is all about large music stages, whiskey & flowers thrown to the singer – don’ t ask why. Younger Greeks, now, prefer big concerts of tribal, balkan, ethnic beat. There is no breaking of plates anymore unless you are in a touristic bait tavern where they want to impress you with this wellknown cliché of Greek “kefi”.
BREAKING PLATES Smashing plates for good luck is a tradition, though mostly limited to celebrations like weddings or bouzoukia nights. It likely originated from the Ottoman era when breaking expensive things was a display of wealth.
BROKEN PAVEMENTS & SLOPE wARNING Don’t expect properly conserved pavements and roads. So put on your sneakers instead of high heels!
CINEMA UNDER THE STARS Athenians are outdoor cinema enthusiasts! Catch a movie under the
summer sky for a unique cinematic experience.
CROSS Older people will cross themselves when passing a church. It’s a common gesture for good luck. Notice many taxi drivers do it too.
DRIVERS Athens drivers can be a bit aggressive and a bit lax. They may change lanes abruptly without warning or drive slowly, often while talking on their phones. Following the street signs is something of a weak character. Whether you’re behind the wheel or on foot, stay alert.
march to break the monotony of standing still all day and at 6pm you can watch the changing of the guards. Just make sure that you do not stand in their way; they are not allowed to stop for any reason-instead, they can march-kick the obstacles with their pompom shoes.

DERTI “An unrelenting sense of loss or unfulfilled desire”. It’s a word to describe the feeling you get after a heartbreak, a sentiment Greeks love to sing about. Remember, “drama” is also a greek word.
DRUGS In 2017, Greece legalized the use of cannabis for medical purposes. Since 2018, pharmaceutical companies can cultivate cannabis for medical use. Possession, use, and sale of cannabis for recreational purposes remain illegal. Penalties can range from fines to imprisonment, depending on the quantity involved. Smoking cannabis in public places is prohibited.
EATING IN ATHENS NEVER FAILS TO PLEASE It’s a street food heaven in abundance and deliciousness.
Highlights: Gyros, the iconic Greek street food. Mediterranean medley, fresh & flavorful. There’s always a history on a plate and there’s a wonderful fusion of traditional and modern greek cuisine.
FOUSTANELLA
Often compared to a kilt, is a key element of the traditional uniform for the Evzones Presidential Guard in Greece. It’s more than just clothing; it’s a symbol steeped in history and national identity. Worn by revolutionary fighters, it became associated with bravery and resistance against Ottoman rule. King Otto of Greece (1832-1862) adopted the fustanella as part of the official court costume, further solidifying its national significance. The Evzones Presidential Guard adopted the fustanella as their official uniform in 1868. Made from up to 30 meters (98 feet) of white cotton, the fustanella features around 400 pleats. Traditional pleated kilt that comes of the 19th century. It is worn by,
FRAPPE SOCIETY
Athens, the eye of Greece, mother of arts And eloquence.
- John MILTON (English poet)
EVZONES Evzones, (meaning the “well-belted” elite soldiers, a term traced in Homer’s times) are the guards of the former Royal Palace. In Syntagma square, you can take your picture next to them and see if they blink. Every so often they do a little
Frappe coffee is the lifeblood of Greek society. Made with instant Nescafe mixed with water, ice, milk and lots of sugar, a frappe will provide you with the right amount of caffeine for your coffee break, and the right buzz to sip while gossiping and people watching. Now entries are the fredoccino, the frapuccino and everything as long as it’s cold and long to drink. Third wave coffee is also a great preference especially among young people who hang out in new and established specialty coffee shops.
GREEK COFFEE
Greek coffee is a strong, bold brew made with finely ground coffee beans typically boiled in a small pot called a briki. Unlike filtered coffee, the grounds settle at the bottom of the cup, creating a thick and rich consistency. Preparing
Athens wasn’t the host of the first Olympic Games! Those were held in Olympia, in the Peloponnese region. However, Athens did host the first modern Olympics in 1896.
The name “marathon” comes from a legendary Greek soldier named Pheidippides who ran from Marathon to Athens (about 42 kilometers) to announce the Greek victory over the Persians.
Athens, Home of Philosophy. Athens was a breeding ground for some of the greatest philosophers in history, including Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. Their ideas continue to influence Western thought today.
The rails on the pedestrian pathway at Makriyiannis Street are the remnants of the old Athenian Tram, which stopped operating in the early 60s.
The underground river flowing underneath Monastiraki Square, some of its parts now exposed in sight, is Eridanos river.
The narrowest road is Kallipou street, about 2 meters in width. It is located between Monastiraki square and Kapnikarea, intersecting Ermou Street.
The name of the english nobleman who removed the marbles of Parthenon is Thomas Bruce, 7th Earl of Elgin. Greece strongly believes the marbles were illegally taken and demands their return to Athens for reunification with the remaining Parthenon sculptures. They argue the marbles are integral parts of the monument and their cultural heritage.
About 7% of all the marble produced in the world comes from Greece.
Acropolis Surprise: The Parthenon wasn’t just a temple; it doubled as the city’s treasury, housing vast amounts of gold.
The Presidential Guard (Evzones) in front of the Greek Parliament building at
Syntagma, “rotates” every hour.
European Heat Record: Athens holds the record for the highest temperature ever recorded in Europe - a scorching 48.8°C (119.8°F) in 1977.
Facing the building of the Academy of Athens, the statue on the left is Plato and that on the right is Socrates.
The Columns of Olympian Zeus are the remainings of a “gigantic” Temple dedicated to Zeus. At its time, Olympieion as it was called, it was bigger than the Parthenon, in fact it was the biggest temple in Greece.
The Parthenon’s roof was kept well maintained for more than 2,000 years, until late 17th century, in 1687, when it was bombarded by the Venetians under Francesco Morosini.
The Parthenon wasn’t always a temple. It served as a church during the Byzantine era and even a mosque during Ottoman rule.
The Parthenon’s columns are slightly tilted inwards – an optical illusion to create an appearance of perfect symmetry.
The tallest building in Athens, and in the whole Greece, is the “Athens Tower” at Ampelokipi. Its 28 floor-structure go up 103 meters to the sky.
Athens limits buildings to 12 floors so as not to block the view of the Parthenon.
There are 29 cities in the world named “Athens”, seven of which are found in the United States.
The world’s third leading producer of olives, the Greeks have cultivated olive trees since ancient times. Some olive trees planted in the thirteenth century are still producing olives.
Sometimes the city of Athens is referred to as The Big Olive.
Greece enjoys more than 250 days of sunshine – or 3,000 sunny hours a year.
Greek coffee is almost a ritual. The slow brewing process and the formation of a light foam on top (called kaimaki) add to the experience. Traditionally served black, some enjoy Greek coffee with sugar added before brewing for varying levels of sweetness.
GREEK COFFEE FORTUNE
TELLING Fortune telling in the grounds of the coffee. After finishing the coffee, some like to turn the cup upside down and interpret the leftover grounds for fortune-telling. There’s no one specific group or person designated as the official “readers” of Greek coffee grounds. The practice of tasseography, which is fortune-telling using tea leaves or coffee grounds, is more about personal interpretation and tradition.
Greece is a good place to look at the moon, isn’t it?
- Kari HestHamar (Norwegian novelist. This quote, from the novel “So Long, Marianne”)
HONEY Athens offers a delicious opportunity to experience the unique taste of Greek honey. Greece boasts a diverse range of honey flavors thanks to its varied flora. Thyme, pine, citrus blossom, and wildflower honeys are some popular options you’ll find in Athens. Explore specialty food stores and farmers’ markets. Look for shops with a focus on local and artisanal products. Some restaurants in the city incorporate local honey into their dishes and desserts, offering a delightful way to experience its versatility. Keep an eye out for honeyinfused soaps, cosmetics, and even liquors for unique souvenirs.
HORIATIKI SALATA The classic Greek salad featuring tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, olives, feta cheese, and olive oil. A refreshing and essential part of any Greek meal.
INTERNET Greece has 3G, 4G+ 5G mobile broadband and Satellite Internet access. Greece also has an extensive fiber optic network throughout the country. Most cafes and restaurants offer free Wi-Fi. Ask for the password.
IT
IS A SMOKER’S PARADISE
Smoking is very popular in Greece and still relatively cheap compared to the rest of Europe. Still, it’s completely
prohibited in all enclosed public spaces, including restaurants, cafes, bars, nightclubs, workplaces, public transport, and government buildings. Smoking is generally allowed in outdoor spaces, like sidewalks, streets, and open-air cafes.
JEWELRY SHOPS Everywhere!
Greek men don’t wear so much gold like the Italians do. Except maybe, a golden cross their mama gave to them 30 years ago! Greek women love jewels but, most of all, tourists love handcrafted gold since it is inexpensive in Greece but also for its high quality and excellent craftsmanship.
KAVSOHNAS You’ll frequently hear “καύσωνας” mentioned in weather forecasts and news reports during hot summer periods in Greece. It is a crucial word for understanding and discussing heatwaves in Greece. It’s a widely used term across weather forecasts, news reports, and everyday conversations.
KEFI/KEFIA While “kefi” can be translated as happiness, it goes deeper. It’s a full-bodied experience
that encompasses joy, excitement, enthusiasm, and a sense of liberation.
KIOSKS “Periptero” is a small kiosk that serves as a neighborhood convenience store. But “periptera” are more than just kiosks; they’re a vital part of Athenian life. They offer convenience, local interaction, and a window into the city’s daily rhythm. Some of them even stay open 24/7.
KOULOURI Walking around the city, you will spot some men selling this kind of bagel, round pastry coated in sesame seeds. It’s the most healthy snack you can find for a relatively small price (maximum €2,5). It’s the handy breakfast for most greeks, along with the morning coffee.
MALAKA “Malaka” literally translates to “wanker” or “jerk off” in English. This is its most vulgar and offensive meaning. It can take on a wide range of meanings depending on context, tone, and relationship between the speaker and listener. It can be used to express mild frustration, similar to “damn” or “shoot” in English. Among
friends or family, “malaka” can be used playfully or affectionately, almost like a friendly jab. Sometimes, it’s used for emphasis, similar to “seriously?” or “you’re kidding!” Of course, in the most aggressive tone, it retains its literal meaning and becomes a serious insult. While “malaka” might be thrown around casually among friends in Greece, it’s not a word tourists should use lightly. It could be misconstrued and cause offense.
METRO The fastest and most extensive option of public transport. Three lines connect major landmarks, tourist destinations, and suburbs. Runs daily from 5 am to midnight (until 2 am on Fridays and Saturdays).
MOUTZA Imagine holding your hand up with the palm facing outwards and all fingers spread wide. That’s the moutza gesture, considered the most common and direct insult in Greece. The gesture is often accompanied by a forward thrust of the hand towards the recipient, adding emphasis to the insult. Moutza is a powerful tool in Greek communication, but it should be used
with caution. Understanding the context and potential offensiveness is crucial.
NEIGHBORHOOD GEMS Athenians enjoy exploring hidden tavernas, cafes, and parks in their own neighborhoods. This allows them to escape the tourist crowds and experience a more authentic Athenian atmosphere.
NEOCLASSICAL HOUSES
Athens is known for its stunning Neoclassical architecture, a trend that emerged in the early 19th century. After gaining independence from Ottoman rule, Athens sought to revive its connection to ancient Greece. Neoclassicism, with its emphasis on clean lines, symmetry, and inspiration from Greek temples, became the architectural style of choice. Neoclassical houses are a testament to Athens’ rebirth and its ongoing connection to its classical past. Check out the Zappeion Hall, the Benaki Museum and National Bank of Greece.
“NEVER ON A SUNDAY”
Oscar winning music theme for the movie of the same name. The composer, Manos Hadjidakis, is one of the most favorite Greek composers.
ORANGE TREES Those decorative orange trees lining the streets are beautiful, but beware – the fruit is not for eating! They’re typically bitter.
OWL Throughout the antiquity, goddess Athena and her companion owl served as city and primary coin type. What made the Athenian silver so popular and long lasting was its status as the definition of good money. The modern Greek one-euro coin features the owl taken from the ancient Athenian four-drachma piece, practically the first coin in the history of Europe. Artist Dimitris Kasdaglis draws owls on peebles hiding them in various places in the city, free for finders keepers.
PALAMAKIA Clapping your hands rhythmically. Apart from showing appreciation, it’s also essential for dancing and having fun the greek way. Old greeks used to clap when they wanted to attract the waiter’s attention in tavernas.
PHILOTIMO Greeks are very proud of this word which cannot be translated. It means “the love of honour”, or “doing good”, and it refers to the concept of respecting values. According to ancient Greek philosopher, Thales, “A Greek is not a Greek without it”.
PICKPOCKETS While Athens is generally safe, pickpockets do operate in crowded areas, especially targeting tourists. Be extra vigilant in metro stations and public transportation, popular tourist attractions (Acropolis, Plaka) and busy streets and squares.
QUEER ATHENS The LGBTQ+ community in Athens is vibrant and increasingly visible. Pride events and LGBTQ+ venues are more common than ever. Despite progress, social acceptance for LGBTQ+ people isn’t universal. Prejudice and discrimination can still occur. Areas like Gazi and Psirri have a higher concentration of LGBTQ+ bars, cafes and clubs.
REBETIKA The soulful soundtrack of the Athens underworld. Often compared to the blues, Rebetika originated in the early 20th century

For many Greeks it consists of a quick coffee, “tyropita” (feta cheese pie) and cigarettes on the move. If you’re feeling adventurous though, try a cup of “loukoumades” for breakfast. These are deep-fried dough balls drizzled with honey and cinnamon, a sweet treat to start your day.
among marginalized communities. The lyrics paint a picture of tough lives, with themes of poverty, crime, love lost and hashish use.
RELAX Sipping coffee, not rushing. Athenians frequent “kafeneions” (coffee houses) for leisurely chats, playing cards with friends, or simply scrolling on their smartphones over endless cups of Greek coffee. It’s about savoring the moment, not rushing through a caffeine fix. It’s about slowing down, connecting with loved ones, and appreciating the beauty of everyday life in this historic city.
SANDALS Leather sandals with an ancient Greek aesthetic are popular footwear in Athens. Ancient Greek Sandals is a highly-regarded brand that offers a wide range of handmade leather sandals inspired by those worn in antiquity. Kyma Sandals are handcrafted in Athens using highquality vegetable-tanned vachetta leather. Melissinos is a historic Athenian shoemaker established in 1920 that offers a wide variety of handcrafted leather footwear, including sandals with a classic Greek look. They have been a favorite among celebrities for decades, including Sophia Loren and Jackie O!
SIESTA TIME Midday break. Many businesses in Athens observe a siesta, typically from around 2 pm to 5 pm. This allows people to retreat from the midday heat, enjoy a long lunch, or take a nap.
SPANAKOPITTA A savory phyllo pastry pie filled with spinach, feta cheese, onions, and sometimes dill. A delicious vegetarian option.
SUPERSTITIONS The evil eye, a curse believed to bring misfortune, sickness and headache, is a common concern. Athenians might wear evil eye charms for “matiasma” or keep them in their homes to ward off negativity.
SYRTAKI DANCE The famous “syrtaki” dance scene in the movie Zorba the Greek has popularized a specific dance style, though it wasn’t
GRAFFITI
Athens is a paradise for graffiti artists, with a vibrant and ever-changing street art scene. Graffiti is practically unavoidable in Athens, from historic neighborhoods to modern areas. Legal and illegal, the line can be blurry, with some areas designated for street art and others featuring more rebellious pieces. Many works reflect social and political issues, offering a glimpse into the city’s pulse.
traditionally Greek. It’s more of a tourist performance aspect now.
TAXIS They are yellow, they are everywhere and, compared to other international cities, the rates are still cheap. You should always request a receipt for the amount paid, which should also indicate the taxi registration number and the driver’s name. Athens taxi drivers have, during the peak of the tourist season, a special preference for tourists, leaving loacals struggling in the heat to find a taxi. Opt for safe apps such as Uber and FreeNow. As for tipping, 5 euros is more than fine.
TAP WATER In GREEcE IS fInE
And bottled spring water is readily available. Nevertheless, do not pay more than €0,50 -1 for O,750L of bottled water.
THEATER Athenians love the theatre and especially to argue about which performance was the best or not - just like their ancient ancestors. In a city
with about 300 theatres and with about 1500 performances in each season, one understands that a rich and varied spectacle is on offer. Visitors always have a performance of ancient tragedy at the Herodion on their schedule.

WInE Athens offers a delightful experience for wine lovers, with a mix of local Greek wines and international options. Assyrtiko (crisp white), Agiorgitiko (medium-bodied red), and Moschofilero (aromatic white) are some popular Greek grape varieties you should try. Athens has a thriving wine bar scene, offering an intimate atmosphere and knowledgeable staff to guide your exploration.
WALKInG Athens is a city best explored on foot. Its ancient sites, charming neighborhoods, and lively squares are all waiting to be discovered at a leisurely pace. Some of the best walks you can do: The Acropolis and Plaka, the Anafiotika Walk, National Garden and Zappeion Hall, the Philopappos Hill Walk.
YASSOU It is the a very common salute, meaning “hello”. Address a local like that to steal his heart and have him at hello. It comes from “health to you”.

Athens Museums
By MARIA ALEXIOU
In a city as ancient as Athens, museums present fantastic chances for guests to interact with the vast cultural and historical heritage of the city. There is no doubt that there is a museum in Athens to satiate your curiosity, whether your goals are to explore ancient ruins, discover more about the history of the ancient city, or peruse galleries showcasing ancient or contemporary art.
National Archaeological Museum
Greece’s largest museum, the National Archaeological Museum, is regarded as one of the most significant in the entire globe. It was the first museum established in the newly liberated Greek state, having been founded in 1829 following the revolutionary struggle. A sculpture collection that shows the evolution of ancient Greek sculpture from the seventh to the fifth centuries BC is housed in the museum. Highlights include the Golden Mask of Agamemnon, which was discovered in Mycenae by H. Schliemann. Other noteworthy sections include the Metallurgy collection and the Vase and Minor Objects collection. The museum, housed in an 8,000 square meter neoclassical building from the 19th century, is home to over 11,000 exhibits. Make sure you allow enough time to explore the museum, and don’t miss the 700 plants on display in the recently renovated atrium garden— many of which have references to Greek mythology. 44 28th of October (Patission) Str., Athens +302132144800

The Acropolis Museum
One of Athens’ architectural gems, the Acropolis Museum stands in stark contrast to the marble volume of the Acropolis. The floor to ceiling windows let sunlight shine on the statues while offering visitors awe-inspiring views of the Acropolis across the street. Situated just 300 meters southeast of the Parthenon on the ancient road Dionysiou Areopagitou, it contains over 20,000 pieces that were discovered during excavations in Athens. To fully understand the significance of the Acropolis in the Mycenaean Period, start the tour on the first floor at the northeast corner and try to avoid going between 10:00 and 14:00 on weekdays. Furthermore, the Acropolis Museum is open until 22:00 on Friday nights. Savor a special menu based on traditional recipes at its restaurant, which is open until midnight and offers stunning nighttime views of the Acropolis. Situated on the museum’s second floor, the restaurant boasts an expansive public terrace offering stunning views of Athens’ historic hills. 15 Dionysiou Areopagitou Str., Athens, +302109000900
The Cycladic Art Museum was established in 1986 to house the collection of Nicholas and Dolly Goulandris. Today, it is home to one of the largest private collections of Cycladic art worldwide. The two buildings of this museum house over 3,000 objects from all phases of Cycladic, Ancient Greek, and Cypriot art in both permanent and temporary exhibits. Neofytou Douka Street is a modern building connected to the restored Neoclassical Stathatos Mansion of the 19th century by a glassroofed corridor. What lies beneath?
Celebrating 15 years of operation, the Acropolis Museum unveils the “Excavation Museum”
Αn ancient neighborhood where people of various national origins and religious beliefs lived productively for over 4,500 years was discovered at the base of the Acropolis Museum, a unique embrace of ruins that traces Athens’ ancient past through the centuries. Constructed along the sleek, uninterrupted southern face of the rock, it accommodates human habitation and activity from the fourth millennium BC to the twelfth century AD. Free citizens, metics, and slaves reared their offspring and buried their dead, established their homes and jobs, worshipped local deities or embraced eastern mystery cults. A few of these individuals not only strolled but also produced some of the masterpieces, the Parthenon and Acropolis monuments that we still revere today. The most well-preserved archaeological remnants include roads, houses, baths, workshops, and graves, while a plethora of artifacts, including coins, vases, and sculptures offer important insights into the lives of the people who inhabited the area during its protracted historical journey. Acropolis Museum's architecture incorporates this ancient neighborhood of Athens in a unique way, allowing it to interact with the magnificent examples of Greek art on display on its floors. The semi-open “museum beneath the museum” houses 1,150 of the thousands of objects the research has uncovered in a 35-meter showcase. Οpen during the Museum’s opening hours. ANCIENT THEATRE OF EPIDAURUS
Oresteia (12 & 13/7)
The National Theatre of Greece and acclaimed director Theodoros Terzopoulos are staging the only surviving trilogy of ancient Greek drama, inspired by myth of the Atreidae. In Agamemnon the triumphant general is returning to his palace in Mycenae, after 10 years of war in Troy, only to meet his death by the hand of his wife. In Choephori his son Orestes avenges Agamemnon’s death and seeks Apollo’s protection at Delphi, while the Furies come after him. Eumenides is based on myths about Orestes’ flight to Athens and his trial by the gods of Olympus.
Plutus (19 & 20/7)
“What can I do to ensure a secure future for my child?”; that’s the question the honest but poor peasant Chremylus poses to the Oracle of Delphi, in the aftermath of the defeat of the Athenians at the Peloponnesian War. Written by Aristophanes, the greatest representative of the ancient Greek comedy, the play according
to director Giannis Kakleas “shows us a way of managing material goods, but always with the interests of the city in mind”.
Hecuba, not Hecuba (26 & 27/7)
Myth and reality, theatre and justice meet at the new Comédie-Française production which lands to Epidaurus, right after its premiere at the Avignon Festival. In this play by acclaimed Portuguese director Tiago Rodrigues, an actress rehearses Euripides’ Hecuba as she holds the role of Priam’s widow that has lost everything. The tragic myth nonetheless meets her real life, as she is fighting for justice for her autistic son, mistreated by the institution that was supposed to take care of him.
Bacchae (2 & 3/8)
Τhe possibilities of the soul, human virtue, selfconsciousness, prudence, and fallacy, the rational and the irrational are central to Euripides’ “Bacchae” – the tragedy of Greece, of rulers and of people, according to Jan Kott. Staged by the National Theatre of Greece and director Thanos Papakonstantinou, the story
takes us to Thebes where King Pentheus refuses to acknowledge his cousin Dionysus as a god. His defiance arouses the wrath of Dionysus who leads Pentheus to annihilation by his own mother.
Birds (9 & 10/8)
Two Athenians, Pisthetaerus and Euelpides, decide to leave the world of men in search of a city without pettiness and corruption, where one can live in peace and justice. Along with the Birds, they establish a utopian city in the sky. Aris Biniaris stages the famous comedy by 5th c. BC playwright Aristophanes as a performance-concert.
The Suppliants (23 & 24/8)
A poetic and deeply political play at the centre of the modern concern on the concept of asylum in a democratic society, “The Suppliants” is the first and only surviving play from Aeschylus’ Danaid Tetralogy. The story raises the issue of the female identity and place in society, as well as the fierce fate of the refugee and the value of justice.
PEIRAIOS 260
Parallax (14 & 15/7)
Three generations of a family in an apartment in Budapest. The grandmother, a Holocaust survivor, has learned to hide her Jewish identity, the daughter tries to use it to enroll her son in a better school, who chooses to identify only as a gay man. In a society in crisis is it possible to remain neutral? This is the “canvas” for the latest production by Proton Theatre and Hungarian film and stage director Kornél Mundruczó.
Point of Refreshment (23-25/7)
Can we reverse our view of the world for a moment? See beyond the world of matter?
Award-winning director Argyro Chioti and a troupe of actors, dancers and singers invite us to discover a special place on the border between myth and reality, inhabited by fantasies and ghosts. A narrative that claims a return to myth.

The Acropolis 10:00 A.M.
No visit to Athens is complete without a visit to the infamous Acropolis. The Acropolis is an ancient citadel located on a rocky outcrop above the city and contains the remains of several ancient buildings of great architectural and historic importance, the most famous being the Parthenon. Developed in the 5th century, it was the breeding ground of many modern ideas and innovations, including democracy itself, which grew from the conversations people and philosophers had on the lands of the Acropolis. The most famous building in the Acropolis is the Parthenon, dedicated to the Goddess Athena. An enduring symbol of Ancient Greece, although the Parthenon has suffered much damage over the centuries, including the loss of most of its sculpture, its basic structure has remained intact. Moreover, the Greek Government is actively working to restore it. Other sights of particular interest in the Acropolis also include Socrates’ old stomping ground and the Erechtheion. Note that the Acropolis is an immensely popular tourist destination, and even in offseason, can be overrun with a colossal number of visitors — making it important to take particular steps to avoid the swarm and improve the quality of your experience. One recommendation is to visit the Acropolis during the cooler hours of the day, either early in the morning around 8 A.M. or late in the afternoon at about 5 to 6 P.M. when there is only a fraction of the people who visit in droves during the morning hours. Another is to avoid the main entrance of the Acropolis and instead use the lesser-traveled south slope entrance. It’s also a good idea to get your ticket in advance, as well an audio guide or guidebook, so you know what you’re looking at.
The Acropolis Museum 11:30 α.M.
If you’re particularly interested in history and archaeology, then you should absolutely visit the Acropolis Museum. Here, you get to see the best orientation of what you’ve already seen at the Acropolis — in fact, it might come as a surprise to some of you that the museum actually holds the original pieces excavated from the Acropolis whereas buildings on the site itself comprise mostly of replicas. Displaying numerous incredible statues and art saved, preserved and conserved from the archaeological site, the museum’s presentation is simply exquisite. The ticket to enter the museum is 10 euros. If you’ve only got 24 hours, we’d recommend only entering the
museum if you’re seriously interested. On the other hand, if you’re looking for a museum to visit for more than just the originals of duplicates you’ve already seen, we recommend the National Archaeological Museum. The most comprehensive museum in Athens, it’s also the only place you can see archaeology from every single region in Greece across every single time period. Note, however, that it does take about four hours to see it thoroughly and it’s recommended to take a guided tour to really understand the importance and context of the different artifacts you’ll undoubtedly be awed by.
Syntagma Square 8:00 A.M.
If you’re trying to squeeze as much daylight as possible out of your 24 hours in Athens, it might make sense to start your day at 8 A.M. in Syntagma Square. Syntagma Square is the central square of Athens, and a major point of its commercial, political and social life. Named after the constitution (syntagma) King Otto was forced to grant his people after a popular and military uprising in 1843, Syntagma Square continues to be a stage for demonstrations and political rallies above and beyond being a hub for tourist activity. Syntagma Square also houses the Parliament building, built around 1842 as the residence for King Otto and Queen Amalia and serving as the Parliament quarter since 1934. At the bottom of the Parliament stands the Monument of the Unknown Soldier, a cenotaph (tomb erected in honor of persons whose remains are elsewhere) commemorating all fallen soldiers in war. The monument is guarded by the evzones, members of the presidential guard. Every 15 minutes, the two evzones standing guard switch position by way of a strange yet oddly alluring choreography. We recommend getting to Syntagma Square at 8 A.M. so you can pick up early breakfast and catch the changing of the guards, officially kicking off your day in Athens.
Temple of Olympian Zeus 9:00 A.M.
From Syntagma Square, we recommend that you head toward Hadrian’s Arch and the Temple of Olympian Zeus. The Temple of Zeus is one of the biggest ancient temples of the Greco-Roman Empire, and one of the most impressive Athenian archeological sites. This massive temple was only completely in 132 AD by Emperor Hadrian after being partially built and then left in limbo for about 700
years for a variety of different reasons. After building a colossal statue of Zeus to adorn the temple, Hadrian then proceeded to build an equally large one of himself.Although the temple is mostly decayed today, it does not take too much imagination to envision the beast it must have been so long ago. In fact, the Corinthian-style columns (17m high with a base diameter of 1.7m) are only 15 of a temple that had a whopping 104. Depending on how interested you are, you can choose to observe the temple from a distance or actually enter it. If you choose to visit, the entry ticket costs approximately 6 euros.
Monastiraki Square 2:30 P.M.
Bordering Plaka is Monastiraki Square, a flea market neighborhood in the old town of Athens, and one of the principal shopping districts. Not only does it boast landmarks and archaeological monuments like Hadrian’s Library, the Ancient Agora and the rebuilt Stoa of Attalos, with a museum exhibiting Athenian artifacts, but its flea market is also a huge tourist hit, with a jumble of shops selling everything from artisanal soaps to handmade sandals to souvenir T-shirts. A boiling cauldron of people, ideas, civilizations, and religions, Monastiraki is a must-visit!
Dionysiou Areopagitou Street 4:00 P.M.
After Monastiraki, we’d recommend taking a stroll along one of the most picturesque boulevards in all of Athens, offering an extraordinary view of the southern slope of the Acropolis, along with the Parthenon itself. Most of the buildings on one side of the road facing south were constructed in the late 19th and early 20th century in the neoclassical or modernist style, reflecting the aristocratic style of the street. Named after Dionysius the Areopagite, the 1st Athenian convert to Christianity and patron saint of the city of Athens, this not only offers you an opportunity to walk like a true local Athenian but also make for fantastic photo-ops. Some places to look out for as you walk along include: the Sanctuary and Theatre of Dionysus, where the plays of the great Greek dramatists like Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides and Aristophanes were performed, the Sanctuary of Asclepius, a temple that housed patients and functioned as a basic hospital, and the Stoa of Eumenes, a walkway where theatergoers at the time could take shelter from sun or rain.
Varvakios Central Market 5:00 P.M.
Varvakios Central Market is, to put quite simply, the Grand Central Station of food, where people from all walks of life converge to discover the freshest and most delicious ways to satiate their hunger. Everyone shops here, from celebrity chefs to neighborhood grocery store owners. Named after one of Greece’s
Plaka 1:00 a.M
Plaka is the oldest section of Athens. Located in the shadow of the Acropolis, it seems almost a world away from the urbanism of the city. Jewelry stores, souvenir shops, restaurants and cafes run abound in the area — in fact, Plaka is a pretty good stop to get some lunch; you’ll be able to enjoy outdoor seating and authentic Greek food. As for the souvenir shops, you’re likely to discover a number of interesting objects, some more eclectic than others, antiques, hand painted icons, carvings and paintings, all likely compelling enough for you to feel like you need to get souvenirs for everyone you know. There is almost too much to do in Plaka over several weeks, much less several hours. A handful of places worth visiting include: Cine Paris, the best outdoor movie theater in Athens, Angelo the Ouzo King, the shop that prides itself on having the most varied line-up of ouzo as compared to any other shop in Athens, and Remember, a punk-fashion store. Plaka is paradisiacal, and has something for everyone, no matter what you’re looking for in Greece.
national heroes, gentleman pirate Ioannis Varvakis, this is a tribute to the everyman, as the Athens Central Market knows no class divides. Fish reign supreme, with almost a hundred fishmongers located in the heart of the building block. Even if you’d rather not buy anything, you’ll still be in total awe of one of the most interesting places in Athens. Alternatively, if you’re looking for any herbs, spices, or oils, this is absolutely the place to get them. Note that parts of the market start closing at 3:00 P.M. (if you’d like to go earlier), but others are open until 7:00 or 8:00, so you will have plenty of time to look around.
Psiri 6:30 P.M.
Psiri is yet another neighbourhood in Athens, known for its restaurants, bars, live music tavernas, and small number of hotels, and our last destination for the day. While it might seem early to close down, rest assured, Psiri needs all the time it can get. We recommend starting with its street art —just like street artist INO once said in a New York Times interview, “If you want to learn about a city, look at its walls”. Psiri boasts breathtaking and vibrant street art like that of Alexandros Vasmoulakis, who mixes collage, photography, paint, and digital media to that of Jupiterfab, known for his projects that express social and political opinions. From there, we’d recommend heading back to the main square and catching dinner at one of its many restaurants and tavernas. Restaurants in Psiri are mainly traditional, with authentic Greek mezze and homemade specialties. Whether it be Kokkion, the artisan ice cream parlour, or Mavros Gatos, a Greek and Mediterranean restaurant, there is no shortage of the delicious in Psiri, so make sure you come hungry. As the evening arrives, cafes, restaurants, souvlaki shops, ouzeries and bars in Psiri begin to open and soon, the neighborhood starts buzzing with the sound of music and conversation. Athens really comes alive at night and Psiri is at the centre of all that action. Nightlife is vibrant and bohemian, with small, friendly bars and hip entertainment. Tranzistor is a lovely place with colorful decoration and reasonable prices, Cantina Social, with its renowned Russian beers, attracts the counter culture crowd, hipsters and bands and Psira, one of the earliest bars to open in this district, is the favorite hangout for students. Pick up a beer at Beertime or some ouzo if you aren’t already tired of it. Psiri is popular for its live music. A small bar called The Party has live rock and pop music just about every single night; other bars and clubs include Therion, 7-Times Club, Barrett Bar and so much more. If you still feel like you could use another drink after Psiri, you can finish off your day either at 360 Degrees or at A for Athens rooftop bar in Monastiraki.
Tours for all tastes
ATHeNS THrOuGH TuK TuK, TrIKKe, MOTOr CArT AND GASTrO TOurS
By Katerina Kamposou,
Plaka, Thissio, and dionysiou areoPagiTou
Masses of tourists typically convene at these historic neighborhoods to wait for Tuk Tuks, buggies, fat bikes, and scooters. Group after group is picked up on a strict timeline. On the tour, escorts reveal exclusive secrets of the city, give generous tips for holidays in Athens, and supply passengers with bottles of water, especially in the hot Athenian sun. These tour vehicles pour into the narrow streets and become one with the colorful mosaic of the historic center.
on a Trikke
“On our trikkes, tourists see more and sweat less. They feel a bit like children or as if they are skiing on the road, the way the vehicle tilts left and right” says Nikos Serafidis, who was the first (along with his brother Kostas) to introduce to the tourist public of Athens back in 2013 to Scooterise and
the guided tours on trikkes — electric vehicles with three points of support on the ground. As he explains to me: “We had just finished our studies and were looking for an innovative tour concept, at a time when the market related to tours in Athens was virgin. When we first started, the Greeks and local shopkeepers treated us like we came down from spaceships – now they're used to us, but they still turn heads when they see us pass by”.
A group trikke tour of the historic center starts from 49 euros and usually lasts an hour and a half, starting at 18 Hatzichristou Street in the Acropolis. It then passes by all the popular sights such as the Pillars of Olympian Zeus, Zappeion, Kallimarmaro, National Garden, Presidential Palace, and Parliament for the Changing of the Guard and back from Monastiraki. According to Nikos, “What they enjoy most on the route is
that Athens has many faces. There are the ancient museums, the picturesque alleys, the market, and the graffiti on the walls”.
I ask Nikos: Is it safe to drive a trikke in the center of Athens? How do the drivers manage these special vehicles on the road, and how much do the roads really favor micro-mobility, especially in times of intense tourist traffic and crowds?
”The routes we have chosen do not bring our riders into direct contact with cars,” Nikos explains. “We prefer large sidewalks like Zappeion and the times we need to cross roads with heavy traffic are minimal, and always controlled. During periods with intense tourist traffic, we find ways to manage it. The city always expects hypertourism, so its infrastructure is designed to hold a greater demand than the actual supply”.
Moving around the city
An exciting ride on a red open-top bus
Take a ride on the jovial and entertaining Red Open Top Buses of City Sightseeing, the premier global provider of open-top tours operating under the iconic City Sightseeing name, to experience everything that Athens has to offer. The CitysightseeingAthens, Piraeus & Beach-Riviera Lines follow the history and culture of Attica and Athens with commentary in twelve different languages. From the perspective of a bird’s eye view up on top deck, the story of the Ancient city of
Athens, Piraeus, and the coastline, from Antiquity right up to modern times, is told in a lighthearted manner that gives passengers both the quirky little details and factual history. Additionally, it offers the chance to conserve energy for visiting historical sites, museums, art galleries, and, last but not least, amazing swimming and shopping! The special 24-hour ticket that spans two days, along with the “Hop On Hop Off” option and a regular bus schedule, allows City Sightseeing visitors to experience each location at their own
pace. Your ticket is a passport to unparalleled freedom because there are a total of 36 stops on the three tours (Athens, Piraeus, and BeachRiviera) that you can Hop On and Hop Off as often as you’d like. At any of the stops, you can decide where and when to get off, explore the area and rejoin a later bus, feeling secure in the knowledge that City Sightseeing adheres to a reliable schedule of arrival and departure times. CitysightseeingAthens looks forward to showing you Greece’s greatest city!
In a motor cart
Apart from the historical center, guided tours along the Athenian Riviera are also quite popular. Dimitris Valtetsiotis, creator of Hellas Vintage Tours, wanted to differentiate himself from the classic guided tours done by tourist vans in Vouliagmeni, and instead invested in vintage motorcycle rides. He brought 5 engines from Germany in order to transport tourists or locals who want to see Athens from a different perspective inside.
Dimitris explains to me: “They are impressed when they arrive less than half an hour from the center of Athens in such a peaceful environment as the lake. They really like the route along the Athenian Riviera, with its palm trees and beautiful beaches, and if they want we stop for a swim.
The two-hour route at Lake Vouliagmeni costs 215 euros; it starts with a coffee in front of the lake and continues with a tour of the special geological points of the area, as well as the beaches of Vouliagmeni.
The longest walk is the one to the Temple of Poseidon in Sounio, which takes 5 hours and costs 315 euros. In addition to visiting the temple, visitors
are taken to the nearby church of Agios Petros and the local taverns.
To ensure maximum comfort, the tour in the city center includes routes mapped by Dimitris and special passages where they do not get stuck in traffic. The motor bikes cross the narrow streets of Psirri, Plaka, the Acropolis, and the main streets of the city –Stadiou, Amalia, around Omonia square— and depending on the passenger's preference, the ride can last from one to four hours.
The tour in the wider area of the Acropolis, for example, lasts an hour and a half and costs 115 euros for two passengers, with several stops for photos at the points where the view is unique”.
On a Tuk Tuk
Athenian Tuk Tuks are modern, quiet, and environmentally friendly. As the coowner of Tuk Tuk Athens, Akis Athanasiadis explains: “We are the first to bring the national vehicle of Thailand to Athens, in a 100% electric version. The idea was inspired by me and my partner, Carlos Pitta, as their Tuk Tuks are ubiquitous, serving as one of the most popular means of sightseeing for tourists”.
Each Tuk Tuk holds 6 people, moves at a maximum speed of 40 km an hour and follows three routes: The first has a duration of one and a half hours, including attractions such as the Parliament, the Numismatic Museum, the Academy of Athens, the hill of Lycabettus with a 30-minute photo stop, the Benaki Museum and the Constitution Square, at 25 euros. The second two-hour route includes the Parliament, the Numismatic Museum, the Academy of Athens, Lycabettus Hill with a 45-minute stop, the Benaki Museum, plus the Panathenaic Stadium, the Temple of Zeus, the Acropolis, the Theseus and the Syntagma, starts from 40 euros per person. The third, which is 3 hours long, includes the Parliament, the Numismatic Museum, the Academy of Athens, Lycabettus Hill with a 45minute stop, the Benaki Museum, the Panathenaic Stadium, the Temple of Zeus, the Acropolis, Thisium, Monastiraki, Plaka and Syntagma, at 55 euros per person. The program even offers a night ride, which proves to be the most popular option.
Food tours with groups
Christina Dragana works as a food tour guide and delivers home cooking classes to tourists in collaboration with the Traveling Spoon and Eating Europe. Depending on the program, tour groups visit various city markets – Varvakeio, Lachanagora, the "grocery stores" of Evrypidou, traditional cafes on Athinas Street for loukoumi and coffee at the hovoli. They get salepi from a street vendor and learn how to wrap souvlaki. Each point of interest is accompanied by a unique story.
“Our relationship with the people who host us and the narrative element gives the visitor the opportunity to understand basic things about nutrition in our country – why we have certain foods in our everyday life and when we have had them. Apart from the quality of the food that the participants taste, equally important are the interactions with the people who have opened or work in the shops we visit during
our 3 ½ hours of our tasting walk in the city center. Tourists especially enjoy the sense of local character they feel when visiting the small family-run shops that are not part of large standardized restaurant chains. They have the opportunity to talk to locals and to be in places where we, as Athens residents, also go, away from tourist trap shops”.
What attracts guests of
various nationalities?
“They get excited about what they taste because, although it's simple food, our comfort/street food made with few ingredients doesn't lack in taste. The majority of the participants are from the US, followed by Canada, Australia and a very small percentage from European and Asian countries. For Europeans, it may be due to the fact that they have more of an
exploration culture and do not prefer organized activities, as the distance is not prohibitive to return to our country, unlike travelers from distant countries. Beyond the stories and information that is relayed in the tour, there is the human factor that makes a difference and makes each tour a new challenge”.
9 cycling routes in Athens
By Katerina KaBosou photo: tHanasis KaratZas
Depending on the season and the mood, Athens offers wonderful places for relaxation and exercise. Summertime is ideal for bike rides because the city is emptying. What's better than a bike ride when the sun goes down and then get yourself an ice cream or iced tea afterwards? Here’s 9 routes within Athens
1
Acropolis Starting from the National Garden one can easily cross across to Plaka and then, following a path to the left, easily reaches Dionysiou Areopagitou and descends towards Theseio. The most romantic and historical bike ride in Athens could not be other than the one that starts from Dionysiou Areopagitou, crosses Plaka and ends in Anafiotika. However, it’s not recommended for weekends because of the crowd.
2 The “Aesthetic” Route This 7-km route goes along Athens’ longest bicycle lane — starting from the Thissio Metro station, it passes along Ermou, following the charming neighborhoods of Petralona, Kallithea, Tavros and Moschato. After crossing the buried Ilissos River, you will reach the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre, whose olive trees and lavender gardens are as refreshing to cycle past as the breeze that inevitably follows. From there, you can wrap up your tour — or continue along the seafront promenade of the Athens Riviera, passing through Palio Faliro and Alimos to the coastal suburb of Glyfada.
3
Street Art Tour If you’re fascinated by the growing alternative culture in Athens, consider a tour of the city’s charged and evolving street art. Turn into alleyways with floor-to-ceiling murals, unique cafés and offbeat shopping districts. While we’d recommend going with a local tour guide, you can do it by yourself by wandering through famous street art districts including Psiri and Metaxourgeio. This route is better oriented towards experienced cyclists as streets in these areas can be relatively busy.
4
Psychico Follow the inter-municipal cycle path starting from Faro and you will cross many neat urban neighborhoods. At the same time, you
will get your fill of views of nature, as Nea Erythrea, Chalandri and Psychiko, which are surrounded by the bike path, are among the greenest areas of Athens.
5
OAKA It is the safest route to cycle in an area that many choose for running, cycling and walking with their children and dog. All routes there are circular and there is no stress due to cars or uneven terrain.
6 Coastal road Many people don't know is that along the Coastal road, next to the main street and the tram lines, there are wide sidewalks ideal for cyclists. The coastal road that runs parallel to Poseidon Avenue is even more charming at sunset.
7
Stavros Niarchos Cultural Center The Niarchos Foundation is suitable for those who love cycling and art, as they can pedal during cinema time in the outdoor area. In this particular park, it is even possible to rent a bike there in case you don't have one.
8
“Antonis Tritsis” Park Antonis Tritsis Park (1,200 acres) is only 8 kilometers far away from Omonia. Cyclists will get a workout on the endless dirt tracks, and if they get tired, they can enjoy ice cream at the duck pond.
9 Athens by Night Ditch the crowds and the daytime heat for lamplit Athenian streets at night, and see the city many miss – one that comes alive by street performers and illuminated monuments gleaming against the night sky. Revisit tourist hotspots like the Parthenon and the Temple of Zeus with fresh eyes and explore the intriguing nightlife in Syntagma Square, Plaka and Psiri. For safety reasons, it’s best to choose this option only if you’re an experienced cyclist or if you have a guide so as not to get lost at night.
Verdant utopias
within a Mediterranean City
LoveLy city gardens for reL axation
By MARIA ALEXIOU - PHOTO Marc rayMond
Athens’ green spaces are a locals' refuge from the crowded urban surroundings. These serene spots, dotted around the city, are home to both priceless childhood memories and the remains of ancient ruins. Athens’ parks, no matter how big or small, offer plenty of space for a range of leisure pursuits. These verdant havens provide a break from the intense Mediterranean heat and the hectic pace of the metropolis, whether you choose to take leisurely walks along long jogging trails or locate the ideal location for a picnic.
The National Garden
The National Garden
The National Garden, formerly called the Royal Garden, is a historically significant green space in Athens. It was founded in the 19th century by Queen Amalia. With a wide range of features and attractions, it is currently one of the biggest and most wellknown gardens in the city. Beautiful fishponds, intricate networks of meandering gravel pathways, a children's playground, a small zoo, and a Botanical Museum exhibiting a wide variety of plant species are all located within the grounds. If you have limited time during your visit, the gardens can be an excellent option for a stroll in the late afternoon. Alternatively, they can be used as a quick shortcut from the Panathenaic Stadium to Syntagma Square.
Lycabettus Hill
Lycabettus Hill offers an incredible sweeping view of the ancient city that should not be missed. The magnificent views of the serene Saronic Gulf and the famous Acropolis make the strenuous ascent to its top worthwhile. Alternatively, that top can be reached by car or the Lycabettus Hill Funicular railway for those who would rather not hike. Once you're there, make time to explore the quaint Saint George church, a gem of architecture that adds to the hill's charm. Savor the famous Orizontes restaurant and one of the hill’s many bars and restaurants as you watch the stunning sunset over the shimmering Aegean Sea.
Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC)
The overall atmosphere of much of Athens' classical architecture is contrasted by the SNFCC. The Stavros Niarchos Garden is particularly lovely for visitors with small children, as it is remarkably organized and modern. This park is ideal for families, offering a sound garden, numerous well designed playgrounds, and interactive water jets for play. It has lots of sporting facilities and is a great place for runners. The SNFCC park also benefits from being close to the center's attractions, such as the dancing fountains at the canal and the “lighthouse”, which offers expansive views of the city.
Zappeion
Garden This green area encircles the Zappeion Megaron, a grand hall constructed for the inaugural modern Olympic games that is currently
a hub for exhibitions, conferences and sizable events. On weekends, the sandcolored paths of the garden are home to a restaurant and café where friends meet up and children play among the twenty-three marble statues.
Philopappou Hill Among the best views of the city can be found atop the tallest hill to the west of the Acropolis, Philopappou Hill. It was formerly referred to as the Hill of the Muses and was supposed to stimulate artistic creativity. Prominent Greek aristocrats like Aristides and Pericles would speak to the populace from the summit. But in the era of Roman rule, in 116 AD, a monument was built in honor of Prince Gaius Julius Antichus Philopappos, a Roman exile who made significant contributions to the ancient city. Currently, Philopappou Hill is very central, easily accessible from the Acropolis or Thissio metro stops, and offers fantastic views of the Mediterranean coast and the Parthenon.
Diomidous Botanical Gardens
With over 2,500 species of native and exotic plants, the Diomidous Botanical Gardens is the largest botanical garden in Greece and the Eastern Mediterranean. A wide range of people enjoy the park; it is a haven for classicists due to its historically significant plants like the evergreen Laurus nobilis (Apollo's laurel) and the Paliurus aculeatus (used to weave the thorn crown of Jesus before his crucifixion), as well as a plant lover's paradise recognized for its educational programs and conservation efforts.
The Presidential Mansion
Beautiful gardens that are worth seeing surround the President of the Hellenic Republic's official residence. You are greeted with great courtesy by the staff, who also gently walk you through the control process. Nothing will ruin your peaceful time in the former Royal Palace vegetable garden, which Ernst Ziller turned into a decorative garden in 1897 when Herod Atticus Street was built as well. This garden creates a peaceful, quiet haven with symmetrical grass lawns, seasonal plant-filled islets,
Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC)
and a striking marble staircase. An unexpected outdoor sculpture gallery with pieces by Natalia Mela, Giorgos Zongolopoulos, Kostas Varotsos, Theodoros Papagiannis, and Yannis Pappas is nestled among the trees. No matter how many people are there, there will always be silence and beauty around you. Everyone moves subtly and speaks in a low voice, as if the place itself is imposing a different culture, a bygone nobility. The garden of the Presidential Mansion is open to the public every Sunday, from 10.00 to 16.00, 2 Vassileos Georgiou B’ Ave.
Akademia Platonos Akademia Platonos, replete with winding paths and archaeological ruins, stands as a testament to this great philosophical center two millennia later. Even though it's now a well-liked location for walks and picnics, Plato's rich intellectual legacy is preserved by sporadic art exhibits, workshops on philosophy and a Digital Museum located in the center of the park. In addition to providing a refreshing respite from the heat of Athens, the Garden of the Athens Concert Hall (Megaron) offers an engaging cultural and musical experience. Explore outdoor art exhibits and unwind on beautifully manicured lawns while taking in jazz or poetry readings. Its close proximity to the Dexameni outdoor cinema has made it a popular summer destination for both locals and visitors.
Parko Eleftherias Parko Eleftherias is a peaceful green area with a significant military and political past. This park honors the courageous people who fought and gave their lives in the Greek military dictatorship and the Balkan Wars. Within the park, monuments, an arts center, and museums serve as moving reminders of these conflicts. It is also the location of a well-liked restaurant that opens in the morning as a pleasant café and closes at night as a bustling bar.
Pedion tou Areos Pedion tou Areos, also known as “the Park” by the locals, is home to a variety of wildlife and monuments honoring the Greek heroes of the War of Independence. Long
stone pathways dotted with trees can be found throughout the park, making them ideal for both strolls and runs. However, it is advised that you stay away from this area after dark because of its close proximity to Omonia Square, which can be dangerous at night.
Black Duck Garden Situated in the central Klathmonos Square, Black Duck Garden is a hidden gem that provides an unparalleled view of the city's rich historical background and surrounding natural environment. Othonas, the Greek king, and his 18 year old wife Amalia owned the garden in the early 1800s; they resided in that same complex until moving into the palace. With four entrances, a fountain and a goldfish cistern, the queen had created the first public garden in the capital around the couple's makeshift residence in 1836. The aesthetic quality of that garden is still present, as evidenced by the palm tree that Amalia had planted in the center of the garden oasis. Apart from the historical justifications, visiting Black Duck Garden is the ideal escape from the busy streets of Athens, where you can enjoy brunch or a drink surrounded by greenery. Not to mention how delicious the food is! Adjacent to Black Duck Garden is the Athens City Museum, which is also well worth a visit. Once home to Stamatios Dekozis Vouros, the structure now houses a number of intriguing historical artifacts. 5-7 loannou Paparrigopoulou Str. www.blackduckgarden.gr

Vegan cuisine that brings people together
A few months ago, Roman Witt, an inspired chef, opened the first vegan cooking studio in Athens, aiming to not only demonstrate the enticing possibilities of vegan cuisine, but also to foster a stronger community amongst vegan food enthusiasts. Located in Koukaki, Soybird is a delectable new option for those who have recently made the decision to adopt a vegan diet, are a professional chef who wishes to learn the techniques of vegan cooking, or simply enjoy delicious food. Goal achieved. In addition to learning how to prepare inventive vegan dishes that go well beyond what you are accustomed to, you will also get to taste the food you just prepared with the other participants right after. There are currently six cooking classes available, catering to both novice and seasoned cooks: Greek cuisine, ramen & gyoza, oriental, tacos, Indian, Moroccan, Thai, and a tofu workshop. Just to give you an idea, you can learn how to make vegan falafel, vegan moussaka, vegan popcorn, vegan ramen broths, and even vegan kimchi at Soybird. Every class will conclude with all "students" gathering around a table to share a meal and, most importantly, your thoughts. And that's most likely the highlight of the entire encounter. The Greek Wine Survival Guide
So much morE thAn juSt rEtSinA. how to imPrESS your FriEnDS.
By Yiannis Dimopoulos
Drinking a glass of good wine gazing at the horizon and philosophizing with friends is one of life's greatest pleasures! After all you are in Greece and it was the Greeks that invented philosophy and “symposia” (literally drinking parties to honor Dionysus, the God of wine) – hence Greece being considered one of the world’s oldest wine-producing regions, making its own wine for the past 6,500 years. Ever since the tourism boom in the country during the 1960s, a white wine called “retsina” became almost synonymous to Greek wine and Greece in general, due to its strong resin aroma. But Greek wine has much more to offer. Particularly in recent years, the wine industry has been changing, a shift that is being driven
by a new generation of winemakers that are innovating novel methods of winemaking and reintroducing forgotten varieties. For many years now, top international varieties have been cultivated with great success. Famed sommeliers, wine writers and traders have put Greece firmly on the global “wine map”. So now that you are reading these lines and you are probably already in Greece enjoying the sea, the sun, Greek hospitality and traditional cuisine in some picturesque taverna, embrace the advice of the god Dionysos and celebrate your stay in Greece with some excellent Greek wine from the long list of renowned producers and Greece’s lesser known yet highly promising winemakers that we have picked up for you.
top wine producing regions
Naoussa - Xinomavro
In 1971, the PDO Naoussa region in the heart of Central Macedonia, was recognized by law as the first Greek Protected Designation of Origin with the indication PDO Naoussa and the variety. This indigenous, noble red grape variety produces robust, full-bodied wines which are best known for their superb aging potential and rich tannic character. Some of the top producers are: Dalamaras, Karydas, Kir-Yiannis and Efthimiopoulos.
Nemea - Agioritiko
Among the oldest of Greece’s hundreds of indigenous grapes, the Nemea- Agiorgitiko variety is the only grape allowed to use the Nemea Appellation (PDO Nemea). In Nemea you can find 100 yearold vines and older. Some of the top producers are: Aivalis, Gaia, Palyvos, Skouras and Tselepos.
Santorini - Assyritiko
Assyrtiko, a classy white grape, possibly some of the greatest varieties found in the Mediterranean basin, originated from Santorini. It produces mainly dry white wines, some of which are being aged in oak. There is also Vinsanto, a sweet wine based on Assyrtiko, made from sun dried grapes and can age for decades. Finally Santorini produces the outstanding variety Mavrotragano, one of the highly-touted varieties employed in producing reds. Some of the top producers are: Argyros, Gaia, Hatzidakis, Santo and Sigalas.
3 wine trends in greece
Like the rest of the world, in Greece as well there is a selective tendency for consumers when it comes to wine as they look for “special” ones which will offer a unique experience in the form of a bottle.
Here are some of the Greek labels on the rise: Liatiko Amphorea (Douloufakis), Rhobola (Melissinos), Rhoditis (Tetramythos), Mystirio (Karamolegos), Orange Wine (Anatolikos), Orgion (Sklavou) Xinomavro Rosé (Oenos Nature).
Orange wines are also becoming more popular among the aspired wine consumers. To make orange wine you have to combine the ingredients of white wines and the process of reds. This means that this particular kind is made with white grapes varieties that ferment with their skin and seeds still on. The taste however has nothing to do with the regular white wines or the reds. It is unique. Sour and somewhat dry, fruity and strong. Some of the most promising Greek labels are: ΜΕΤΑ 2011, Pieria Eratini (Pieria Malagouzia), Mithymneon Portokali - Yiannis Lambrou (Lesbos Hydiriotiko), Tatsis Rhoditis (Goumenissa).
Tides have also turned for some rare Greek varieties, some of which we may have never heard before and some, lost in time and forgotten, have “flourished” again due to the efforts of devoted Greek winemakers. As such, it is worth looking for: Villana, Vidiano, Limniona, Liatiko, Kydonitsa, Plito, Mavrotragano, Monemvasia, Negoska.
A bottle of good white wine in the liqueur stores costs between €20-30 and a bottle of red €25-40.
The paradise of fine wine
Oinotypo was set up 27 years ago by Kostas and Konstantina, with the vision of creating a “temple” for every wine lover. It offers a wide variety of over 70 choices of selected bulk wine from all regions of Greece, comparable in quality to renowned bottled wines and, indeed, at excellent prices! Here they age selected wines in new French oak barrels, while their cellar holds more than 1.500 labels from the Greek and international vineyards. And for the tasters and the experts there are rare vintage and fine options, both Greek and international. With the same dedication to alcohol though, a wine cellar has to come along with a great selection of nuts, quality coffee, chocolates and varieties of tea. Of course, all the classic and more “extravagant” drinks are not missing, but also a special collection of rare malt whiskeys.
Assyrtico: The finest white grape from the Island of Santorini, and possibly the cheapest top white wine in the world. Mineral with high acidity, ages well. Try to distinguish an aged assyrtiko to a Chablis Grand Cru.
Malagousia: Aromatic, with a scent of ripe peaches, apricots and green pepper.
Moschofilero: A sweet, aromatic grape, the Greek Gewurztraminer!
Red varieties
Agiorgitico: Rich, deeply coloured, ages well.
Xinomavro: Greece’s answer to Barolo, needs time to develop.
Vinsanto: Sun dried grapes from Santorini. These wines have the complexity of olorosos and Tokajs. Top producers: Argiros and Sigalas.
Mavrodaphne: Sweet fortified wines.
Best old like Banyls.
Muscat: Sweet wines from Samos island.

Let us recommend to you some good and fairly priced Greek wines that are easy to pair, fine-bodied and naturally refreshing for an all-hours allure.

Athens' deep blue waters are rarely seen on trips to the city; instead, its archaeological sites are usually prioritized over any sandy ones. That makes sense –a visit to the Acropolis, the charming Plaka, and a few of the city’s museums would wrap up your stay. Furthermore, it seems sense to prioritize Crete, Mykonos, or Santorini over Athens when considering Greek beaches. However, leaving the ocean-dipping to a Greek island vacation would be a grave mistake in a capital lapped by
the Aegean Sea. After a long day of intense sightseeing, retreat to one of the top beaches on the Athenian coastlines from this list.

Mikro Kavouri Turn right at the “Kavouri” sign as soon as you pass the Voula beach. There are two sandy beaches to the right of the Divani Hotel and three more to the left as you face the ocean. Families will love these shallow waters, and the staff at the nearby coffee shops will be happy to take your order.
Megalo Kavouri For families with small children, Megalo Kavouri's shallow waters are a popular destination. The beach is surrounded by a large number of cafes, restaurants and bars, and its flat sand makes it ideal for strolls in the dusk and tanning. Skip the weekend visits to this beach if you want a more sedate, less congested experience.
Mavro Lithari Many people are surprised to learn that Mavro Lithari allows free access to its white sand beach and crystal-clear blue waters. Keep in mind that getting to this beach by car or taxi can often be more
efficient because it is not easily accessible by public transportation.
Sounio Sounion is totally free and open to the public. It is bounded by the Cape of Sounio, which protrudes into the Aegean Sea at the end of the Attican peninsula. This is about as far away from Athens as you can go without a boat, only a few hundred meters from the magnificent archaeological site known as the Temple of Poseidon and 70 kilometers from the city. The Temple of Poseidon, which is visible from the beach, is what distinguishes Sounion from the other

Be careful when descending.

After a short distance on the dirt road, park. If this is your first visit, especially during the week when it's not too busy, you'll undoubtedly be perplexed as to how a beautiful beach like this can be found only an hour's drive from Athens' downtown. Koropi This little bay, which is located at the start of the Municipality of Kropia right after Varkiza, is sure to impress. It has a slight Cycladic feel to it. You'll descend a short flight of stairs to reach the beach. Remember to bring supplies with you!
Erotospilia, Porto Rafti Situated just one kilometer from Porto Rafti, there's a sandy beach with rocks, tree-shaded areas and little caves. If you're not a fan of crowds, stay away from this beach on weekends. Additionally, there's a packed beach bar.
Alepochori and Psatha, Vilia, Attica Approximately 60 kilometers west of Athens, on the other side of Attica. Both beaches are enormous, with organized sections complete with sunbeds and umbrellas, cool waters and plenty of room to spread out your towel. There are also pleasant taverns with tables by the seaside at the edge of Psatha.
Eden (Paleo Faliro) Edem, the nearest beach to the center of Athens, is a sandy beach with crystal-clear waters
that sits close to the border of the Palio Faliro and Alimos districts. Edem is a very charming beach and one of the easiest free beaches to reach by public transportation. Apart from swimmers, you can probably spot people taking in the warm weather and sea breeze while strolling along the charming waterfront promenade or competing against one another on a sizable chessboard set into the pavement.
Vouliagmeni The public beach at Vouliagmeni, which is located across from the well-known Astir beach, is cozier and less expensive. This beach is ideal for families and friends alike, offering a beachside bar, rentable daybeds and crystal clear waters for a fun day trip.

Aquapolis
Aquapolis, the only waterpark in Athens, has been the sensation of summer since its opening next to the Attica Zoological Park, the largest zoo in Greece. The star attraction? The King Cobra. This thrilling slide dominates the park, offering a stomach-churning drop into the beast's belly, followed by a high-flying swoop between its fangs. Imagine a skate ramp on steroids—on an inflatable! Visitors can't get enough, racing up and down the stairs to perfect their moves for the ultimate TikTok or Boomerang moment. Capture their daring descents or join them on double inflatables. Aquapolis is expertly divided into the Adrenaline Speed Zone, a delightful Family Adventure Zone, and a relaxing pool area. Don't miss the Rafting Ride and the neon-lit Magic Cone and its brand new Virtual Reality corner! Located 20 minutes from the city centre and 10 minutes from the airport. Open June through end of September-early October. Thesi Yalou, Spata, +302106633250 www.aquapolis.gr
This beach, which stretches across the whole Lagonissi peninsula, is almost unbelievable in its proximity to Athens and equally remarkable in terms of its aesthetics. The beach is great for a full day's visit because it provides a variety of facilities, such as the traditional beach chair and umbrella as well as an assortment of adult-only water sports. A movie theater, volley court, beach bar, restrooms, medical support, and complimentary Wi-Fi are among the additional amenities. Enjoy the waterfront view and sea breeze while relaxing by the Grand Pier jetty-bar, which also features soft music, fresh juice, and a breathtaking sunset. There are several places to eat, including Poseidon Tavern, which offers a more laid-back dining experience. On weekdays, a set of sunbeds and an umbrella will cost approximately 40 euros, and on weekends, 80 euros. +302291076000, www.lagonissiresort.gr
The
National Observatory, Thission Visitors’ Center
It is located north of the Hill of Pnyx, where Meton used his heliotrope to conduct the first astronomical observations of the classical Greek era, and directly across the Parthenon on the Hill of the Nymphs. Discover the Geoastrophysics Museum and the Observatory Library, which house a range of scientific instruments from the 19th and 20th centuries along with historically significant books and documents.
Open-air cinemas
A movie night out! Cine Pari and Cine Thission are two of the most celebrated open-air cinemas in the city. Actually these two are the only open-air cinemas in central Athens with a stunning view to the Acropolis. The price you pay for enjoying a fantastic movie under a starry summer sky is substantial, though. You might as well turn away from the film and overlook the entire narrative.
Experience an
Kerameikos
Despite being located in the center of a bustling modern metropolis, a particularly significant archaeological site is oddly enough the least frequented. Located on the northwest edge of the capital, Kerameikos was the ancient Athens cemetery. It's on your right if you follow Ermou Street past the Monastiraki train station. Its natural surroundings, which include a tiny portion of the Eridanos stream, birds, turtles, frogs, and an enormous variety of vibrant flora, prove to be equally tranquil and almost magical.
Piraiki
By the “rocks of Piraiki”, the charming, historic community east of Piraeus' main port, an eastside tale is being told. From the Naval Academy to Alexandras Square, a scenic 5-kilometer paved “vein” winds along the picturesque seashore. This route is perfect for strolls, especially in the late afternoon when the entire Attica, from Faliro to Glyfada, is covered in sunset hues. The remains of the ancient
Themistoclean Wall blend harmonically in a long frame of beloved fish tavernas, coffee shops, and cocktail lounges, while vintage street lambs cast a soft yellow glow over your footsteps.
The flea-markets at Elaionas and Tavros
Every weekend the Elaionas and Tavros districts in southwest Athens are quilted with a colorful patchwork of people, boisterous voices, music, the smell of souvlaki and barbecued meat, and cars parked in total “anarchy” in all directions. The scene of a unique treasure hunt for the explorers of the “irreplaceable” includes antiques, crockery, furniture, decorative items of all kinds, vinyls, typewriters, and turntables, books and comics, clothing, shoes, jewelry, artwork and paintings, and various tools—pretty much anything you can imagine.
Cape Sounio

self staring at the sunset in awe, surrounded by the ancient ruins of the majestic Temple of Poseidon. The drive is just 70 kilometers from the city center, along a seaside road that reveals the bluest waters. Enjoy fresh fish and side dishes at the traditional tavernas lining the coast, or take a dip in the perfect, crystal-clear waters of the nearby beaches at Legrena or Lavrio.
The old Euripos bridge at Chalkida
It is truly amazing to watch the unique Euripos tidal phenomenon from the old sliding bridge. The unique tide effects, which occur nowhere else in the world, are on full display six to seven times a month, with the strait's current changing direction up to 14 times in a single day. The old Euripos bridge is one of the few sliding bridges still standing in the world. Chalkida is a great place for a day trip; it offers beautiful walks along the waterfront surrounded by street performers and dapper fishermen. A succession of vi-
brant umbrellas reveals an unending array of cafes and fish restaurants, perfect for a typical Greek hangout.
Isthmia and the Corinth Canal
The submersible bridge over the Corinth Canal is another bridge that one should absolutely “cross." In fact, there are two of these bridges: the bridge of Posidonia on the Corinthian side and the bridge of Isthmia by the Saronic Gulf, which are both surrounded by lovely neighborhood tavernas and refreshment areas. Unquestionably a must-see location is the 6.4 km long Corinth Canal, with its imposing rocky walls rising 90 meters above sea level. Through the slender 25-meter Corinth isthmus, which was formerly a crucial shipping channel leading into the Aegean Sea, the canal connects the Corinthian Gulf with the Saronic Gulf.
Parnitha Cable car
If you have some extra time while in Athens, hiking the rich pine forest along the mountain trails of Parnitha's
National Park sounds energizing and very intriguing—not just for the unique landscape with its incredibly rich flora and fauna, but also for the exuberant view of Attica, far, far away. You have two options for getting to this amazing summit: drive your own vehicle or, for the ultimate thrill, take the cable car. The “Mont Parnes” Casino is the first and only stop. It is a worthwhile “adventure” to walk the mountain paths to the two stunning refuges of Bafi and Flabouri or to test your luck.
The beach at Varnavas White sand and remarkably pristine deep blue waters. The picturesque village of Varnavas is located about 12 kilometers from one of the most stunning and spotless beaches in all of Attica where you’ll enjoy cool swims and fresh fish at the neighborhood tavernas. An excellent chance to explore the historical sites nearby, including the church dedicated to St. Peter and Paul and the Archaic tower dating back to the fifth century BC.
Cape Sounio

With its picturesque main village, Chora, perched atop a cliff overlooking the Aegean Sea, and pristine beaches such as Agkali and Livadaki, Folegandros offers a tranquil escape from the crowds.
Amorgos Known for its rugged beauty and spiritual ambiance, Amorgos is a hidden gem in the Cyclades archipelago. Explore its labyrinthine alleys, visit the stunning Monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa clinging to the cliffs, and unwind on secluded beaches like Agia Anna and Mouros, where crystal-clear waters beckon weary travelers to relax and rejuvenate.
Astypalaia Dubbed the “Butterfly of the Aegean” due to its unique shape, Astypalaia is a lesserknown island that captivates visitors with its unspoiled beauty and traditional charm. Explore its whitewashed villages, discover hidden coves and pristine beaches, and marvel at the imposing Venetian castle that overlooks the island—a testament to its rich history and heritage.
Ikaria Named after the mythical Icarus who fell into the sea nearby, Ikaria is a tranquil haven where time seems to stand still. Known for its laid-back lifestyle, pristine nature, and longevity-promoting diet, Ikaria offers a glimpse into the simple pleasures of Greek island living. Explore its rugged coastline, soak in natural hot springs, and immerse yourself in the local culture at traditional festivals and tavernas.
Symi Nestled near the coast of Turkey, Symi is a gem of the Dodecanese known for its colorful neoclassical architecture and tranquil atmosphere. Wander through its charming harbor town, Symi Town, with its pastel-hued houses and vibrant bougainvillea, and explore hidden gems like the Panormitis Monastery and secluded beaches like Nanou and Marathounda.
Kythira Located off the southern coast of the Peloponnese, Kythira is a lesser-known island steeped in myth and legend. Explore its enchanting villages, visit the medieval castle of Chora, and discover hidden gems like the waterfalls of Fonissa and the stunning beaches of Kaladi and Fyri Ammos, where emerald waters meet golden sands in secluded coves.
Tilos With its pristine landscapes, rich biodiversity, and welcoming atmosphere, Tilos is a hidden paradise in the Dodecanese waiting to be explored. Explore its medieval castles, hike through lush valleys and rugged mountains, and relax on deserted beaches like Agios Antonios and Plaka, where you can enjoy the serenity of island life away from the crowds.
Chios Known as the “Mastic Island” due to its unique cultivation of mastic trees, Chios is a hidden gem in the northeastern Aegean with a wealth of natural beauty and cultural heritage. Explore its medieval villages, visit the UNESCO-listed Mastichochoria, and discover hidden treasures like the Nea Moni monastery and the picturesque beaches of Mavra Volia and Emporios.
Greece is renowned for its stunning islands, each boasting its own charm and character. While Santorini and Mykonos may steal the spotlight, there are countless islands waiting to be discovered by intrepid travelers seeking the authentic Greek experience. From secluded beaches to traditional villages and unspoiled landscapes, here are some hidden gems of the Greek islands that promise to enchant and delight.
Situated on the southeasterly portion of the Peloponnesian peninsula, the island and its adjacent waters harbor a multitude of archaelogical relics that merit exploration. It is thought that the ancient underwater city of Pavlpetri, which dates to the early third century BC, was washed away by the sea at some point around 1000 BC. Another interesting place to visit is Elafonisos’ main church, Agios Spyridon. This church is spread across a narrow, discrete piece of land connected by a bridge that crosses a turquoise sea.
Antiparos Antiparos is a small and charming island located in the heart of the Cyclades, just a short ferry ride away from its more famous neighbor, Paros. Despite its proximity to Paros, Antiparos maintains a laidback and tranquil atmosphere, making it an ideal destination for travelers seeking relaxation and authentic Greek island life. The island's interior is dotted with traditional villages, olive groves and vineyards, providing visitors with plenty of opportunities for exploration and discovery. The famous Antiparos Cave, a natural wonder with striking stalactites and stalagmites, is a mustsee for the daring.
Donoussa Ten miles north of Amorgos and east of Naxos, on the southeast coast of the Cyclades archipelago, sits the small island of Donoussa, with only 163 residents. The island is made up of cliffs, hills, and mountains and is only 13.75 km in size. The main village of Donoussa, Stavros, has a small harbor from which ferries to Naxos and Amorgos depart. There is a single ferry on the island that transports guests to each of the sandy beaches with pristine waters.
Schinoussa In the middle of the Small East Cyclades archipelago is Schinoussa. It is a location that genuinely provides peaceful and restful vacations. Belonging to the municipality of Naxos, the journey to the island by ferry from Piraeus takes eight hours. Because of its narrow outlet, Mersini's port is one of the best harbors for small ferries in the entire Aegean Sea.
Keros Named Kereia or Keria in the ancient times, this tiny island northwest of Amorgos is of particular interest to archeology buffs. Keros was first mentioned in an inscription in 425 B.C. that listed the taxpayers of city-states that were allies of Athens. Particularly mountainous, its richness in antiquity came from having one of the most valuable stones in the world - white marble.
Unspoiled landscapes, spotless shorelines and undiscovered splendor can be found on the small Aegean islands that manage to withstand unbridled tourism growth while preserving their original essence

Polyaigos
Unknown to most, the island of Polyaigos is a favorite among those who appreciate the splendors of Kimolos and Milos. The admiring gaze is drawn even before you approach it to the white vertical cliffs rising imposingly above a sea that resembles an azure oasis within the blue of the Aegean's deeper waters. Τhe coasts unfold a strange yet charming formation of rocks creating also enchanting sea caves, with the most famous among them being the cave of Fanara on the northern side of the island. Fanara's size allows boats to sail through, so it has been captured innumerable times in visitor photos. Diamantospilia, with its tiny quartz crystals glistening on its rocks, is another sight to behold further north. Pano Mersini (also called Myrsini), which faces the islet of Manolonisi, is the most well-liked beach on Polyaigos because of its proximity to Kimolos. Many private boats and yachts make it a popular summer destination due to its white sand and tranquil, turquoise waters that are typically shielded from the strong Aegean winds. Kato Mersini is a stretch of (also) white sand with an amazing sea located a little further south. Hikers can follow a path from Pano Myrsini to the Panagia T' Avlaki beach.
Sikinos
The island is perfect for hiking because of its small size. You will pass through fascinating caves, distinctive beaches, Byzantine chapels, ruins of ancient settlements, and stunning scenery that is protected by the Natura 2000 program. Start at the Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi and travel for approximately two hours to reach Malta Beach or take the ancient cobblestone path from Kastro to Alopronia. The ideal location to witness a breathtaking sunset is at Panagia Pantochara, a tiny chapel that Odysseas Elytis erected on the route from Kastro to the Monastery of Chrysopigi. The ancient city's ruins can also be found atop Agia Marina's hill. Sikinos is an incredibly friendly island with a vibrant cultural scene and friendly locals. They host top-notch festivals, keep the island's trails easily accessible to tourists, and plan the annual “Documentary Days” film festival in the island's open spaces each summer. For the record, free wireless broadband internet access is provided by the municipality to both locals and guests.
Halki
One of Greece's most graceful little islands, Halki is a great place for people looking for a different kind of summer -a summer of complete peace and relaxation in an environment full of glistening seas, untamed scenery, enchanted mountain paths, mouthwatering cuisine- all of which you can explore “on foot”. There is only one settlement on the island (this is how small Halki is), the well-known Nimborio, also known as Emporio by the locals, which is located directly across from the port. A charming village with brightly colored homes and distinctive Dodecanese architecture, as well as lovely balconies with flower pots in bloom and winding cobblestone lanes that stretch out until they meet the azure waters of the Aegean. While in Halki, spend some time swimming in the sea around the stunning Alimia, the little island sandwiched between Halki and Rhodes. To enjoy swimming in glistening waters and lounging on the expansive, sandy beach of the island, you can rent a boat from Nimborio. Because the island is deserted and there are no supplies to be found, try to pack at least one umbrella and some water or coffee. A small
saltwater lake, one of the 37 natural wetlands in the Dodecanese, can be found on the northwest edge of the island's former settlement, which has been abandoned since the 1940s, if you feel like taking a stroll.
Telendos
Known historically as Kelaris, the island of Telendos was formerly connected to Kalymnos until a powerful earthquake in the 6th century AD submerged the land between (to create another amazing Greek island for summertime getaways!) A boat departing from Myrties in Kalymnos regularly connects the two islands; the trip takes about eight minutes. The island is notable for its charming town with old-fashioned taverns, ancient ruins, historical monuments and…happy, lethargic cats. Stroll the trails, climb the stunning vertical cliffs, and take in the Aegean view while in the pine forest. Since cars are not permitted on Telendos, you must travel by private boat or follow
the paths to explore the island's beaches. We recommend staying on the beach for the entire day to take in the crimson sunset.
Tilos
It is regarded as one of the Dodecanese's most genuine and environmentally friendly travel destinations. Nestled between Rhodes and Kos, Tilos is one of the smaller islands in the Dodecanese chain. Together with four hundred different kinds of flowers and herbs, the island's tall mountain masses, fertile coastal plains, rocky coasts, and expansive sandy beaches create a natural habitat for many endangered bird species, including the Bonelli's Eagle, Eleonora's Falcon, Long-legged Buzzard, European Shag, Bee-eater, and Heron. It is a sizable ecological park that is safeguarded by international treaties and the first energy-green island in the Mediterranean. The dwarf elephants, the last remaining elephants in Europe,
resided here. These days, it's a serene island with charming towns and enchanted beaches, perfect for leisurely getaways. The island's capital, Megalo Chorio, is notable for its stone-built homes' straightforward island architecture, which lends charm to relaxed pace strolls along its winding streets. The Knights of St. John erected a mediaeval castle atop the hill on the location of the island's historic acropolis. Megalo Chorio is home to an Archaeological Museum featuring paleontological finds from the Charkadio Cave, along with other educational materials about the excavations at the cave, as well as a small archaeological collection of vases, inscriptions, sculptures, and more from various parts of the island. Combine your visit to the Museum with a stop at the Charkadio Cave (2 km SE) to see the remains of deer and dwarf elephants that lived 45,000-4,000 years ago, as well as Neolithic ceramics and stone tools.
