In “The Poetics of Memory”, Memory is been examined as a factor and an element of contemporary art, through the Psychoanalysis of Jung and Bachelard’s phenomenological perspective, in which human soul is a unique space that must be analyzed. Memory is a key element for Contemporary Artists. Exploring the practice of remembrance and forgetting, as elements included in art, is a great asset.
This research scrutinizes the function of memory in contemporary art through the prism of spatial element.
This dissertation is divided into three chapters, based on the three stages of personal development; awareness of spirit’s delusion and non-unique reality, examination of trauma and the transition to knowledge of the Self. For each stage, two contemporary artists were chosen, whose overall artwork is related to the theoretical background of its section. The function and usage of Memory is going to be examined through these six case studies.
