Samuel Lacey Australia Soccer Athlete

Samuel Lacey Since I have been playing soccer for more than a decade it has been, and is, a large part of my life. It is something I would definitely want to continue after finishing school. Seeing as soccer is not a guaranteed career, I believe that It is also important however, to obtain a good education and there are many fields of interest to me that I would consider studying beyond high school. So, playing college soccer is something I would love to do as it would combine my passion for soccer as well as for learning and give pathways into a future career, whatever it may eventually be.

Additional Information 1. Cross Country Nationals As a junior, I twice represented South Australia at the Australian Cross Country Championships. On the second occasion I ran the anchor leg for the team. I set the state’s fastest time, ran the eighth fastest time overall, and brought the team home for a Bronze Medal.

2. Kanga Cup The Kanga Cup is the Southern Hemisphere’s largest international youth soccer tournament. It is held annually in the nation’s capital, Canberra. It attracts teams from all parts of Australia, New Zealand, Asia and other parts of the world. I competed twice in the week long event, losing the final to a Korean team in 2007 and winning in 2009.

4. Brazil As a 13 year old, I was awarded a fully funded trip to Sao Paulo, Brazil, to further my soccer career. Along with 12 other Australian players aged between 13 and 17, I spent 6 weeks at Brazilis FC. We trained twice a day, every day. It was a great experience and really improved my touch, ball control and understanding of the game. It was also very challenging, travelling to the other side of the world and living relatively independently, a challenge which helped develop my character

5. SASI Cycling In 2011, I was awarded a scholarship to the South Australian Sports Institute for cycling. After extensive trials and assessment, I was selected as one of 9 recipients from 5000 students. Adelaide is the home of cycling in Australia. This was an amazing experience and I was fortunate enough to be coached by 2012 London Olympian Glenn O’shea, the SASI Head Coach, and Australian National Team Coach Tim Decker. I learnt so much and was extremely busy. I would train and play soccer on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, then train and race on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. At the end of the year I had to decide between the two sports as the commitment required for both was extensive and I was moving into my final senior years at high school. I chose soccer.

Why should a coach choose you for their team? I believe that a coach should choose me for their team as I always give 110% every time in both trainings and games. I feel that I bring good voice and communication to any team and am able to use my experience to assist myself in adapting to any style or structure that a particular coach may choose to play. Over the past 12 years I’ve played, I have developed skills in all areas of playing and would be a great asset to any team. My passing precision, goal assists, creativity and shooting are strong attributes. I don’t turn the ball over.

What makes you different to other players? What makes me different from other players is my work-rate. In everything I have done throughout my life, whether it be in sport, school or any other area, I always make sure I give my fullest to ensure I obtain the best results I possibly can. I also believe that my vision and mind set during play is different from other players’ both in knowing what do to on the field with the ball and without.

How hard do you work on your goals? Whenever I set myself a goal, I do everything I can to achieve it. Whether it is in school and working diligently day in, day out or in sports and putting in whatever extra work is necessary to carry out that task.

College Goals In college, I would ideally complete at least a degree in some field of engineering or the likes of, and potentially continue further studies as well as playing soccer, representing the college team and winning, hopefully aiding them in attaining the best results possible throughout my time there.

Life Goals In life, I have many short and long term goals, some of which are to continue playing soccer at the highest level I can for as long as I can, to graduate from college and potentially continue with further studies, to finish the Kona Ironman, travel the world, and in short try to do almost everything there is to do in life.
