Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Applied Addiction Studies NFQ Level 8 Please note that that this course is currently under review, and subject to change. Addiction services are provided in a continuously changing and complex environment. The addiction professional must be able to respond to these changing needs and demands. AIM OF COURSE The Applied Addiction Studies programme aims to address the needs of people working with addiction. The four strands of each year will: • Provide students with a framework for understanding addiction, both from an individual and social context • Develop an understanding of treatment and intervention approaches • Develop skills and competencies in all areas of addiction work • Promote the understanding and values of reflective practice and evidence –based practice

WHO IS THIS COURSE INTENDED FOR? Addiction workers from Outreach, needle exchange, keyworkers, community work, voluntary sector, residential rehabilitation services, Inter-agency approach, family support services; and professionals from health care settings, prison and probation workers, social care workers, community care workers, education professionals. Professional experience – direct or indirect - is not a pre-requisite for this course. The programme is mapped to the integrated pathway of care defined by the HSE, which outlines a tiered framework of services and service provision. A practical approach, that addresses the complexities of addiction, will provide students with the understanding and skills required to work competently in this area. Year 2 • Addiction Services: an Interagency Approach • Prevention, Education and Health Promotion • Treatment Interventions I • Group Work & Group Facilitation Skills Year 3 • Addiction & Cultural Diversity • Treatment Interventions II • Evidence Based Practices • Key Working Skills Year 4 • Process Addictions • Treatment Interventions III • Project Dissertation • Community Development & Planning ENTRY REQUIREMENTS All applicants must be over 23 years of age. Applicants are considered on an individual basis. In the case of a potential student being in recovery, it will be required that they have a minimum of two years in recovery before applying to the course. Please note that this programme requires students to undergo the Garda Vetting Process. LEARNING TO LEARN Please note: Institute induction and commencement of the Learning to Learn module is on Saturday 21 September 2013 from 9.30am to 5.00pm. Attendance on that date is compulsory. EXIT AWARDS If a student cannot complete all four years, they may apply for an exit award at the points detailed below. Please note that exit awards are only available to those who leave the Institute permanently, and do not intend completing their studies on this programme. Introduction to Counselling and Psychotherapy
AIM OF COURSE This course provides an introduction to counselling and psychotherapy theories with special emphasis on Humanistic approaches. It explains why certain theories/approaches are used for specific everyday applications. Introduction to Hypnotherapy and Neuro-Linguistic Programming AIM OF COURSE To introduce people to the principles of hypnosis and Neurolinguistic programming to equip them with the skills to use it for personal development in their lives. Hypnosis is used in therapy and as a method of trance to help people to achieve their goals in various areas of their lives such as health, relationships, career and finances. Neuro-linguistic programming was developed in the early 1970s from studying various psychotherapies including hypnosis. It is now used in education, business, health, sport and life coaching. NLP has often been described as the user manual for the brain. COURSE CONTENT • The main principles of hypnosis and neuro-linguistic programming • How they can be used by people to achieve what they want • How to set specific outcomes (goals) • How to develop motivation • Students will learn the skill of self-hypnosis • How to develop skill in visualisation and mental rehearsal • How to use hypnosis for stress relief • How to improve communication skills • How to programme your mind to achieve goals • How to change limiting beliefs • What your conscious and unconscious minds are and how to use them effectively. The course is ideal for men and women who want to improve areas of their lives by setting and achieving outcomes.
