Master of Arts in Management in Education NFQ Level 9 AIM OF COURSE The Master of Arts in Management in Education programme provides an opportunity for participants to acquire knowledge and skills in key areas of educational leadership. The programme aims to provide participants with the necessary skills for effective educational leadership and management and to increase their self-confidence and efficacy. The Master of Arts in Management in Education is a flexible modular part-time 90-credit programme suited to practitioners in all levels of education – Primary, Post Primary, Third Level, Further and Adult Education. This course is being offered in conjunction with the School of Education, Waterford Institute of Technology. On successful completion of the programme, graduates will be able to: • Demonstrate competency in strategic planning, mentoring, public relations, education law, financial management and information technology • Demonstrate knowledge of educational leadership theory and related managerial functions

MINIMUM ENTRY REQUIREMENTS • A Primary Degree or equivalent • Three years Postgraduate Experience • Access to an educational organisation where management action research can be carried out Classes will take place on no more than 5 Saturdays per semester. Full timetable will be available from the Department of Adult & Continuing Education from late August 2012. Duration

€6,300 (€700 per 10 credit module) This fee is payable on a modular basis, i.e. from €700 to a maximum of €1400 per module. €700 = 10 ECTS €1400 = 20 ECTS
Getting Started in e-Learning and Technology Enhanced Learning OBJECTIVES The objectives of this course are: • Demystifying e-learning/technology enhanced learning (TEL) and making it accessible to educators and learners alike • Provide experience in the use of a virtual learning environment • Hands-on using of e-learning tools that together create different types of e-learning pathways • Sharing of participants’ experiences TARGET AUDIENCE • Teachers/lecturers/trainers/tutors/education managers • Anyone with an interest in getting started in e-learning and technology enhanced learning • Prerequisites • Participants must be comfortable with the use of a personal computer, the world-wide-web and basic office application software.

METHODOLOGY The methodology during the course will be a mix of explanation coupled with hands-on practice to allow participants to get as much experience as possible in using various tools that assist in the creation of an e-learning environment. The areas to be focused on include both transferring course materials to online modules, creation of online quizzes, games, multimedia content and educational communities. The learning platform will be Moodle (Modular Object Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment). Some thought should be given by the participant on a module or subject that they would like to use as an example for development during the course. OUTLINE SYLLABUS (DRAFT) • Definitions and concepts of e-learning, Face2Face vs online learning, online educational resources, managing digital content, hands-on use of an LCMS (Learning Content Management System) using Moodle. • Synchronous and asynchronous learning, use of virtual classroom applications WiZiQ and DimDim. • Interactivity and testing, online assessment, games. • Collaborative learning using forums, chats, Wikis, blogs, RSS. • Innovation in e-learning and TEL, case studies, mobile and wireless learning, the Smart Schools Report.
