Your World, Your Future Welcome to the 2011-2012 Adult and Continuing Education, Evening and Part-time courses prospectus. Inside you will find over a hundred courses, including academic, recreational and positive living programmes. The programmes chosen for offer this year are as a result of our knowledge of the market and what we feel might be of interest to persons living in the midland region. We hope that they are relevant and interesting.

Over the past few years we have all been experiencing the consequences of the economic downturn. Indeed, it has impacted us all in many different ways. But despite the many negatives, I do believe that it has reminded us all that we must take control of our own future if we are to ensure that we play a significant part in this world – whether we play that part in Ireland or abroad. It is with this in mind that caused us to use the tag line ‘Your World Your Future’ as it is our hope that the programmes on offer will motivate and enable you to take control of your world and your future, enabling you to achieve your various ambitions. Through your choice, attendance and application of the learning that you will acquire on one of these programmes, our hope is that you will achieve your ambitions and go on to exploit the many opportunities that may arise well into the future. In doing so, you will therefore play a vital part in the world we all live in. To assist you in this endeavour, we have introduced a number of new programmes again this year. We are also working with partners in Ballinasloe (Galway), Longford, Leitrim (Carrick on Shannon), Offaly (Tullamore), and Westmeath, to bring learning closer to you. Furthermore, acknowledging the difficult economic climate, the majority of courses are kept at last year’s prices, with exceptions arising only as a result of the Governments student services charge. I hope that as you browse the prospectus in hard copy or online at www.ait.ie, that you find a programme that meets your requirements. When you do, you can either register by contacting the Department directly or through attending the Open Evening on Wednesday 7 September. Welcome from the President It is forty years since Athlone Institute of Technology registered its first students. The intervening period has been one of enormous change, with the world of work markedly different from four decades ago. One of the most noticeable changes is in the qualifications profile of the workforce. Where once a third level education was the preserve of the few, now the majority of school leavers are progressing to college and increasing numbers of mature students are entering higher education. Within education itself, there has been an explosion in the provision of courses on a part-time basis. This has radicalised how people can access third level and means that up-skilling and re-training is an attainable goal for many people. The current economic downturn has caused many to question firmly held beliefs. One assumption was that third level was an automatic passport to a good job and the financial security that this brings. Unfortunately, as can be seen from endless reports and surveys, this can no longer be taken for granted. Nonetheless, it has repeatedly been shown that those in possession of third level qualifications fare better in terms of job prospects and earnings than those who are not similarly qualified. This prospectus of part-time programmes is a window to a world of opportunity. There is an enormous range of course offerings here, with a growing number of academic qualifications now available. The staff in our Department of Adult and Continuing Education will be able to answer questions you may have in relation to any matter. The rest is up to you. Be assured however that an investment in education is not just something that yields a return in terms of enhanced skills and knowledge, improved self-confidence and a sense of satisfaction. Athlone Institute of Technology

Athlone Institute of Technology (AIT) is the only higher education institution in the Midlands of Ireland. established in 1970, it has expanded in size, scope and influence over the period. There are some 6,000 full-time and part-time students in AIT studying a broad range of courses offered by the institute’s four schools of business, engineering, humanities and science. Programmes are available at undergraduate and postgraduate level. The principal aim of the Institute is to build on its strengths to become a college of choice for learners and staff regionally, nationally and internationally. A new strategic plan for the Institute which sets out a vision to 2013, establishes a series of ambitious targets including increasing student numbers by 40 per cent, developing e-platforms for students, generating research income of €10 million per annum, and increasing collaboration across the higher education and industry sectors. Approximately €100 million has been invested in AIT’s campus since 2000, with a new Engineering and Informatics Building opening in September 2010. A new postgraduate research hub also opened recently, while the institute’s new track and field facilities are garner-ing considerable acclaim.

In accordance with its increasing student intake, the Institute has developed rapidly since its foundation. The main campus is situated approximately 2km from the town centre on the Dublin Road. The Institute currently offers an extensive range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes to students, which has been a factor in attracting industries to the town. AIT is an important contributor to the local economy and to the shaping of Athlone’s future.

1) Hobby/Recreational Courses

Generally theses courses take place one evening per week over a period of 8-10 weeks. Participants will learn new skills in the relevant area, but the focus of these courses is on the enjoyment of the learning. Participants who attend more than 75% of the scheduled classes will receive an Institute Certificate of Attendance on request. Examples of these courses are Make Up Tips & Tricks and Hands on Practical Cookery.

The Department of Adult and Continuing Education deliver some courses in conjunction with Professional Bodies, such as the Institute of Public Administration and the Association of Certified Chartered Accountants. The relevant Professional Body dictates the syllabus to be taught by AIT. In the majority of cases students have to register with and pay registration/examination fees to the relevant Professional Body as register with and pay tuition fees to AIT. This is detailed in the relevant course details in this prospectus. The examinations for these courses are set and managed by the relevant Professional Body, but generally the examinations take place in AIT or in the surrounding area.

2) Professional Development Courses These courses are similar in format and duration to the Hobby/Recreational Courses, however the focus of the learning is applied to skills that will help the participants in their working life, for example Presentation and Communication Skills and Web Design & Development. Participants who attend more than 75% of the scheduled classes will also receive and Institute Certificate of Attendance on request.

Welcome National Framework of Qualifications – further details available from www.nqai.ie

The ladder system, also referred to as add-on, describes where you can progress from one qualification to a higher-level award. For example, if you obtain a higher certificate (Level 6), you may progress to an ‘add-on’ ordinary Bachelor’s degree (Level 7) and subsequently to an honours Bachelor’s degree (Level 8). The levels refer to the standing of the award on the National Framework of Qualifications. The ladder system gives you considerable flexibility to sample a discipline for two years, to change direction in your studies, to take time out between qualifications to work, and to move between one institution and another as you climb the ladder. The diagram below shows how the ‘ladder’ system of qualifications operates at AIT. The alternative path toward obtaining a qualification is known as ab initio. This is the Latin for ‘from the beginning’. It describes programmes which allow you to progress directly to award stage. For example, if you undertake an ab initio (honours) Bachelor’s degree, you receive that qualification on successful completion of the relevant four-year programme. Many of the courses are offered through a number of different modes: Full-time, Part-time, Day-release and ACCS. The Institute’s courses are also recognised by a number of professional bodies for the purposes of exemptions. On the professional accountancy courses for example, recognition and exemptions are gained from the appropriate professional organisations.

The courses offered by the Institute service the current and future needs of Ireland’s industrial, commercial and social sectors, while at the same time meeting the highest national and international standards.

Award Titles A parallel system of referring to awards is in place: one refers to the level of the award, while the other is for its formal title. The National Qualifications Authority of Ireland (NQAI) established a framework for the development, recognition and award of qualifications based on standards of knowledge, skill or competence acquired by learners. The National Framework of Qualifications provides a level for every award made in the jurisdiction, which are as follows: • Higher Certificate (Level 6) • Ordinary Degree (Level 7) • Honours Degree (Level 8) • Masters Degree (Level 9) • Higher Diploma (Level 8 – Postgraduate)

Awarding Bodies/Course Accreditation The courses offered at AIT reflect the current and future needs of Ireland’s industrial and commercial sectors, while at the same time meeting the highest national and international standards and gaining recognition and exemptions from the appropriate professional bodies.

AIT is proud of the fact that its academic standards are independently and internationally recognised as being of the highest quality. As a result, the institute is empowered by HETAC, the Irish national awarding body for higher education, to confer its own (HETACaccredited) awards up to Level 9 taught programmes and for Level 9 research awards. Welcome

As a part-time student, you would normally expect to gain 30 ECTS credits in a semester or 60 ECTS credits in a full academic year. To support lifelong learning, however, we will facilitate registration within a range of ECTS credits and it is proposed that you can register on as little as 5 ECTS credits. Some of our courses are accredited by Professional Institutes, for example our accountancy courses are accredited by the Association of Certified Chartered Accountants (ACCA). In instances where this is the case, it is clearly noted in the individual course descriptions.

Work/Clinical Placements Placements are a common (and sometimes mandatory) feature of many of our educational programmes. These work experience opportunities provide you with academic and employment benefits not possible in an exclusively college environment. As well as offering exposure to current work practices in industry, industrial placements provide a means by which you can practise the skills and apply the knowledge you have acquired in college, as well as undertake structured research within a teamwork situation. Industrial placement requirements are detailed within the particular programme information.

Garda Vetting Requirements A number of academic programmes offered by the Department of Adult and Continuing Education require students to undertake placements that will bring them into contact with children or vulnerable adults, and in which they may assume positions of trust. To ensure the protection of the public and to justify public trust and confidence, the Department of Adult and Continuing Education is committed to ensuring that only suitable candidates are allowed to undertake these programmes. All students should be aware that some courses are subject to successful completion of work placement. In order to commence work placement, each student will be responsible for providing information to the Institute of their suitability for such courses. This will include obtaining Garda vetting and may include medical assessment and provision of personal references relating to suitability for placement. Failure to meet Institute requirements in this regard may make completion of the programme impossible and thus students would be unable to obtain an award. Students are advised that obtaining relevant approval for placement can take up to 6 months, and so students contemplating advanced entry to relevant courses may need to consider this matter prior to attending the programmes offered by the Department. The current legal minimum age for sole application for Garda vetting is 18 years of age. In the event of an applicant being between 16 and 18 years of age, written consent is also required from a parent or guardian. Garda vetting requires information on all previous residences to be provided. Students who have resided outside the Republic of Ireland are advised that details of all such residences with accurate dates of residence will be required for the Garda vetting process.

Recognition of Prior Learning – “Credit where credits are due”

Welcome

Are you an adult learner with experience in the workplace? If so, Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) can get you a ‘headstart’ in your desired programme of study, through exemptions and advanced entry. Through RPL, AIT ensures that you can get credit for what you have already completed.

What is RPL? Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is the system for crediting students for “on the job” learning, through training (certified or non-certified) or through a variety of other sources. Hundreds of mature learners have benefitted from this system to date.

RPL includes: (i) Accreditation of Prior Certified Learning: Where an applicant has already been awarded a certificate for a formal programme taken at another institution or training organisation. (ii) Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning: This involves the awarding of credit for learning from experience.

Advantages of RPL • Formally recognises previous learning through work or college • Meet fellow mature learners • Develops study skills prior to commencement of programme • Frees up study time for other subjects

3. Following the information session, applicants are requested to complete the initial RPL application form available at www.ait.ie and return it to the department within two weeks. A panel will sit to assess the initial RPL request on the dates below and each student will receive feedback. 4. If successful, the potential applicant will be assigned an AIT mentor who will work with them to assist them in achieving the RPL. 5. The RPL panel to assess initial application forms will sit on: • Wednesday 14 September. • Wednesday 28 September. • Wednesday 9 November. • Wednesday 7 December.

All fees received are receipted in writing. Except where stated, course fees cover the cost of tuition only and refer to the course or academic year as appropriate. Additional costs may arise during the course for photocopying and/or books etc.

Fees stated are per annum and not per programme. The Institute reserves the right to change fees on an annual basis. Certain courses may also require the purchase of relevant textbooks. 2. Academic Calendar The Institute Academic Calendar will be issued to all registered students on the first night of their chosen course.

3. ACCS The ACCS (Accumulation of Credits and Certification of Subjects) scheme allows students to follow any subject on a approved course, and to be awarded a single subject certificate on successful completion of the subject. Subjects passed are certified individually and can be accumulated leading to an award of a Higher Certificate, Degree (Ordinary or Honours). This scheme is designed specifically to facilitate students wishing to follow courses on a part-time. For further details, please refer to the Institute full-time prospectus.

4. Start Dates of Courses Course start dates are specified in detailed course profiles. It is the responsibility of each student to ensure that they are aware of the specific start date for their chosen courses. We do not send letters to students confirming start dates. All courses will start on dates stated in this prospectus.

6. Tax Relief on Part-time Courses For Individuals Since April 2001, the Revenue Authorities have simplified the system that allows tax relief on certain third-level courses. You now can claim tax relief on fees paid for approved undergraduate, postgraduate, information technology and foreign language courses. The conditions surrounding this relief are relatively straightforward. The duration of both full and part-time undergraduate courses must be at least two years. Both undergraduate and postgraduate courses must be approved by the Minister for Education and Science, and the tuition fees must be paid by the individual on his or her own behalf or on the behalf of a spouse, child or person’s legal guardian. Tax relief is also available on technology and foreign language courses. The courses must last less than two years, and result in the awarding of a certificate of competence – a certificate of attendance is not sufficient. The courses must also be approved. The courses in question must cost in excess of €315 and relief is not available if part of the tuition fee is paid by a grant, scholarship or where fees are reimbursed by an employer.

To apply for the tax relief you will need an application form called IT31, which can be downloaded from the Revenue Commissioners website at www.revenue.ie. This needs to be completed and returned with the receipt for the fees paid. If you are currently working and claiming relief on fees paid during the last tax year, you will need to send a copy of your most recent P60 with your application.

Additional examination fees are payable separately and in some cases directly) to professional bodies. The Department of Adult and Continuing Education is not responsible in instances where this does not occur. On the morning or afternoon of the respective examination, candidates must present to the examination invigilator with an AIT student card or the relevant professional body student card along with a form of personal identification, e.g. drivers licence, prior to being admitted to the examination. 8. Refund Policy

While the tax relief available to individuals is limited to specific courses there is another option. If you are currently employed and are considering doing a course, you could consider requesting that your employer pays for the course. The payback to them is that they are investing in your skills and ability so that over the long-term you could add more value to the company.

Please note: The onus is on the student to notify the Department of Adult and Continuing Education in writing in the event of their withdrawing from their course for any reason as soon as is practicable.

The key benefit for employers is that they can apply for tax relief as long as the course in question is associated with your job.

7. Examinations and Examination Fees Please note that ensuring they are properly registered for examinations is the responsibility of the student. Examination dates are defined by the Examinations Office or relevant professional body, in consultation with the Department of Adult and Continuing Education. Examinations are delivered in accordance with the Instituteâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Marks and Standards. Changes are not permitted to the Examinations Timetable. Students to fail to pay fees in full will be de-registered and not permitted to sit for examinations. Students sitting AIT managed examinations are advised to check the online examination timetables regularly in case any changes take place. Students are also advised to reconfirm the date and time of each examination on the web based timetables within 24 hours of each scheduled examination. Students sitting external examinations must ensure that they are aware of external examination dates. In addition, students must ensure that they have registered for and paid the appropriate examination fee by the relevant closing date, where relevant. Students should make themselves aware of examination entry closing dates, fees etc.

The relief is subject to an upper limit of â&#x201A;Ź1,270 per course and is on a basis of one course per individual in a tax year.

Short courses (3-12 weeks): A full refund will be given if requested one week before course commencement. A refund less administration fee (25%) will be given if requested where one class of the course has taken place. Refunds are not available thereafter.

For courses of 13 weeks or more: A full refund will be given if requested one week before course commencement. 9. Cancelled Courses As all Adult Education classes must be self-financing, Athlone Institute of Technology reserves the right to cancel any class that is not financially viable prior to commencement. All registered students will be notified and all fees will be refunded automatically.

10. Programme Schedules All registered students will be issued with a schedule/ timetable as appropriate on the first night of their course. The Institute reserves the right to change the schedule of any programme outlined in this prospectus. The Department of Adult and Continuing Education or the lecturer may under unavoidable circumstances change the day and time of any class, (students will always be notified).

13. Banking Bank of Ireland operates a full on-campus banking service. An ATM facility is also available in the Institute’s reception area.

14. Restaurant Facilities The Institute has an excellent restaurant, which serves meals and snacks each day between 9.00am and 9.00pm, Monday to Thursday, 9.00am to 2.00pm on Fridays and 10.00am to 12.00pm on Saturdays.

15. Parking Facilities Adequate facilities are provided at the side and rear of the Institute. Cars may only be parked in authorised areas. Vehicles parked in non-designated areas will be clamped. The release fee is €90, and outside the control of the Institute. Please note that if you wish to come to the Institute and park before 6.00pm, you MUST have a student parking permit. These are available from APCOA via the AIT website – www.ait.ie go to quick link for Parking on bottom right hand side. If you park at the Institute before 6.00pm and do not have a student parking permit displayed in your vehicle you will be clamped. The release fee is €80, and outside the control of the Institute.

16. Institute Identity Card Only students registered on courses leading to Academic Awards, Professional Awards or other Institute recognised awards will be issued with an Institute Identity Card. This card also allows access to the Institute’s library computer and photocopying facilities.

Aim of Course

During this course you will look at the most basic building blocks of design; colour, form, texture, composition, symbolism and other design concepts through a series of lectures, assignments, critiques and case studies. This course is studio based, therefore the majority of work will be focussed on producing visual work and the constructive critique of that work.

independent. Text to Speech software can enable a student with a reading difficulty to access their curriculum books. Mind mapping software can help students to plan projects and structure assign-ments. Voice recognition software can help a student who has difficulty writing to produce legible text by converting their spoken word into typed text. Literacy support software can help students with the spelling, punctuation, grammar, research and organisation of their writing as well as reading texts aloud to them and assisting with understanding difficult words and homophones which they might oth-erwise misread. In a recent study by the Ascent Project 97% of third level students with specific Learning Difficulty reported that using assistive technology reduced their need for help from other people in the completion of learning tasks. Many of the technologies which students credited with improving their performance were free or low cost everyday items of technology such as mobile phones which became invaluable instruments in their success once they knew how to make use of them to address their learning difficulties.

Diploma in Beauty Specialist (ITEC)

Applicants must attend the Institute on a specified date to meet Course Tutor and discuss suitability prior to acceptance on the course.

The ITEC Diploma for Beauty Specialists provides practical skills and a thorough understanding of facial treatments, manicure/pedicure and waxing resulting in a high standard of beauty qualification. (Electrical treatments are not covered in this course). The course is both practical as well as covering the theory required to train successfully as a Beauty Specialist. You will be able to explain and demonstrate:

Anatomy is a branch of biology that deals with the structure of plants and animals. Human anatomy is a special field within anatomy. It studies organs and organ systems of the human body. The human body, like the bodies of all animals, is made up of systems, that are made up of organs, that are made up of tissues, that are made up of cells. Human physiology is the study of the mechanical, physical, and biochemical functions of humans or human tissues or organs.

Holistic Massage This course teaches holistic massage incorporating the classical movements of effleurage, petrissage, tapotment, friction and vibration which enables the therapist to provide full body, face, scalp and foot massage.
