Przewalski’s horse (takhi) is a rare and endangered subspecies of wild horse, native to the steppes of central Asia. For centuries, the takhi were one of the most revered animals on the steppes; but hunting and pastureland competition with livestock forced their numbers decline overwhelmingly. So that, by the 1960s they were completely extinct in the wild. The takhi, however, were still very much alive in zoos and private farms in Europe and America. When Mongolia opened up to the world in 1990 after revolution of democracy, the opportunity to reintroduce these animals to their native territory – the steppe came to fruition. The Khustain Nuruu National Park was created in 1992 as part of the program to reintroduce the takhi and now is covering 506 km2 area.

GETTING TO MONGOLIA Two best ways to get to Mongolia is to take flight or to take train. Some trusted & safe airline companies have been operating flights all year around to/from the only one international airport of the country – Chinggis khan. Taking the flight is faster way to reach the country, but sometimes taking the train of Trans Mongolian Railway is interesting option for some. Journey by train from Moscow to Ulaanbaatar takes 5 days to get from to Ulaanbaatar, capital of Mongolia. (Trans -Siberian Train) The weekly Trans-Mongolian (train 4 eastbound, train 3 westbound) train leaves Moscow for Beijing every Tuesday night. The 7,621 km (4,735 mile) journey takes 6 days. This train crosses Siberia, cuts across Mongolia and the Gobi desert, then enters China and passes through the Great Wall. There's a second weekly train between Moscow and Ulan Bator (train 6 eastbound, train 5 westbound). Alternatively, there are daily trains between Moscow and Irkutsk and a daily train between Irkutsk and Ulan Bator (train 263/264). There are two trains a week between Ulan Bator and Beijing.
