THE FINISH OF CRACKS
The concept for this book comes from the journey here in San Francisco. I moved to San Francisco in 2013 and that was my first time living away from home. The city, peers, professors, projects and simply life has cracked me open and deeply molded me to the person and being I am today. In that process, there has been scars that were printed but those scars define my personality and myself. Rather eliminating them, why not go about embracing them.
B I OG R A P H Y
Atithi Prajapati, born and raised in Los Angeles, California grew up not knowing what she wanted to be until she got the opportunity to design her father’s re-constructed home. To grow her passion for interior design she moved to San Francisco to attend Academy of Art University and studies interior architecture and design. After moving away from home and living an independent life, she is able to explore the beautiful city and have fun growing as an individual. Her endless inspiration comes from life itself, as well as the culture she comes from, and watching people how they behave in their daily life. Her interest is in making peoples lives feel organized and functional through Décor. Her style mostly comes from the beauty of fashion; the color combination and texture is something that she can easily put into a space. Her interest also appears for sustainability and hopes to design that requires low-energy and reusable materials. Her favorite thing about interior design is that everyday is a new day; every project is different. Having the passion for design, she plans to take every project as a test of passing on to the next level and making every project her favorite. When not designing, Atithi enjoys dancing and performing, observing and feeling the nature, and spending quality time with her loved ones. In the future Atithi would like to work in a firm that would give her the ability to work with different clients in different environment such as having projects abroad so she can have the opportunity to experience different cultures and bring that into her designs. But for now she is working with designing for her family and friends, and as well as for projects at HBA.

The National Geographic Society started in Washington D.C. in 1888 as a small group of traveler in the late Victorian age; the time when Americans and Europeans explores were finding a home for strong audience that had adventures and foreign culture. A little while after the society started a magazine of its own, which covered wide variety of world cultures and natural resources, with a focus on maps and high quality photography. Nation Geographic also started sponsoring the work of many major scientist and later started funding films and television shows. They are know for education and exploration and that has because there identity. Their strong media division now including the NatGeo TV channel, has continued to fund a wide range of scientific and philanthropic efforts around the world. So far the society has approximately 2000 employees in many offices around the world. What is National Geographic all about? National Geographic is a global nonprofit organization committed to exploring and protecting our planet. They find hundreds of research and conversation projects around the world each year and inspire new generations through their education and resources. National Geographic gets you closer to the stories that matter. Through the world’s best scientists, photographers, journalists, and filmmakers, they capture and provide entertainment with knowledge to the global community through books, maps, consumer products, magazines, children’s media and more. National geographic hopes to always provide the same entertainment and knowledge globally as they do now. There interest of exploration include adventures, ancient world, animals, environment, society and culture, space, photography and filming.
National Geographic’s logo is nothing but a simple yellow rectangle frame that represents a photo frame. The reason for the yellow color is to have a connection with the sun because the sun is respected in the NetGeo community. Along with that the color yellow stands for knowledge ad wisdom, which again NetGeo is all about. And the whole point of the this logo is to inspire people to care about the planet.

SITE PRESIDIO PARK 34 GRAHAM STREET San Francisco, CA
The Presidio is where San Francisco began. This inspiring setting at the mouth of an iconic bay was home to native peoples for more than a thousand years. Later it became a cultural crossroads for three nations laying claim to its strategic position. Today’s Presidio is home to the spectacular vistas, nature, and programs that you would expect in a great national park, plus much more. Hundreds of former military buildings are now animated by more than 3,000 residents and 200 companies—including high tech start-ups, innovative non-profits and others that offer a surprising mix of visitor experiences. The park is home to museums and food trucks, art and archaeological sites, San Francisco’s newest recreation facilities and its most historic building. On any given day at the Presidio, organizations are pursuing new ideas, scientists are conducting research, and people of all ages are learning, playing and exploring. The Presidio has long been a “cultural crossroads” shaped by many – Native Americans, generations of soldiers who passed through its gates, and the now visitors from across the globe. Today, the park’s cultural hub is the Presidio Officers’ Club, San Francisco’s most historic building reborn as a home for live music and dance, theatre, talks, films, exhibitions, and creative family fun – all free to the public. The Presidio is a place for lifelong learning – with activities for kindergartens, career professionals, and everyone in between. On a day trip to the park you can learn about a fascinating chapter in history at Fort Point or the Military Intelligence Service Historic Learning Center. Hands-on field trips for youth help students understand the world they are living in today by exploring the Presidio’s fascinating natural and cultural heritage.

CONTACT WITH DISTANCE EYE OF THE UNSEEN
National Geographic helps us have a connection with the knowledge that is far beyond our imagination. It provides us a bridge that allows us to travel without even traveling. Since day one they have been opening doors for the whole world to meet each other. And the way Net Geo was successful in doing this was through photography, a language that is understand by everyone. To apply my concept into my floor plan I have used materials like glass, water, texture, sounds and placement of walls, furniture to create an illusion of a far away space and yet having a contact with it. And I have also used a secondary concept : A Eye Of The Unseen, which represents the lens of an camera that allows NetGeo to communicate with the world. The features and performances of a camera lens is used in the space to add abstract and creative features to the design.

As soon as the visitors enter, they will be greeted by a custom made reception desk. The ceiling will have a custom lighting done to bring emphases into the space. The entrance lobby places a great role of this building. It is design in a way where it has a good traffic flow. For example all the visitors will move to the right to enter the exhibition. The employees will go straight to the elevator or the stairs to get to the office- this also goes to the clients that comes for meetings and presentations.

The reception area for the office is also a crucial space. This is where the information and gudiences is given to the visitors. I wanted this area to be a focal point and easily recognized. And that is why it is kept in front of the elevators and stairs. Whether it is the UPS guy or a client, they will be greeted and assured.

This is one of my favorite part of the design. The hallway is slightly tilted to give a feeling of distance through perspective. The wall of the private offices have floor to ceiling glass panels that allow the room to have contact with everything outside and yet having the technology to bring privacy. The materials used are very neutral to help emphasize the photography for NetGeo that will be used as wallcoverig in each room.

Akira Table The open workspace is also one of my favorites. I have used furniture in a way that allows openness along with privacy. The way how this space was designed was through the study of an office environment. And ceiling design was a must for this area. Hexagonal shape metal panels are hung in different distances to bring interest and comfort to the people that will be spending most of their time here.

The elevation above is a section of the open workspace showing the relationship between the ceiling and floor. Right next to it is the break room (the elevation to the top right). The breakroom is separated by a glass wall to provide a breakage between the work and break space along with feeling of openness. The breakroom is an area where the employees can have staff meetings and find a common space to take a break.

Tony Riviera With more than 25 years of experience as one of the countries premiere restaurant concept developers and visionaries; restaurateur Tony Riviera boasts a strong mix of Executive Management, Marketing and Franchising Chain development skills. Riviera’s vision, talent and expertise position Primo Hospitality Group restaurants for success. Always the global thinker, Riviera plans to expand his restaurant concepts nationally and eventually worldwide. Riviera is no stranger to success. A seasoned entrepreneur and businessman, Riviera has always placed a high priority on charity involvement, at times hosting class field trips at his restaurants designed to teach students fundamental business skills. “I came from a very poor family and had to provide for myself from a very young age. I realize the struggles that are out there for underprivileged children. I think I’ve been fortunate as an adult, and I believe that you get what you give in life,” he says. Riviera’s future plans include an expansion of Primo Hospitality Group to include several new restaurant concepts both nationally and abroad, and a boutique hotel chain.

64 ATITHI PRAJAPATI
Location: San Francisco Completion: February 2014 Contract: $92,088,000 Architect: Ankron Moisan, Ignition Architecture Owner: UDR. Inc. Market Hall that is located just under Channel eight-story apartment complex. It is located at Mission Bay Block 2 with holding brick exterior and commercial finished with curtain wall and metal framing siding. The property 455,000-sq.-ft has 315 unit rental complex that offers 10,000 sq. ft. of space to everything from locally sourced produce to sushi, and a 60-seat full-service restaurant will-feature pizza, pasta, oysters, and small plates. The huge space is designed by Chesmore Buck Architecture, with Jane Kim Design responsible for the interiors and the owner being Tony Riviera. Neighborhood History Mission Bay was a lagoon occupied by year-round tidal waters. Beginning of mid 1800s, Mission Bay was used as a convenient place to deposit refuse from building projects from the 1906 Earthquake. The area quickly became a industrial district and with the addiction of the railroad, Mission Bay became the home to Shipyards, canneries, and various warehouses. In 1998 the area was announced by the Board of Supervisors as a redevelopment project. It then rapidly evolved into a wealthy neighborhood of luxury condominiums, hospitals, and Biotechnology research and development.

Roots Underground Veins All Connected Growth Support Absorbs Cylinder Visible/Invisible Wraps Life
MODERN ROOTS FINE FOODS
Modern Roots Root is a very straight forward term but when broken down,it reveals great features. Looking at a root of a vegetable or any plant, we can see the obvious characteristics but when its understood deeply, it can show us some great details. Such as veins; cylinder or pointed, which reflects to connection, growth and support which implies progress, wrapping and absorbing according to the surrounding environment and life, and underground that is invisible and yet visible when ripped out. When adding modern to roots will not only abstract the features but bring in a unique twist. The root is known as the oldest part of a plant, while modern is known as fresh, present, up-to-date, and latest which is the complete opposite. When combining these two concepts together, it will give birth to an unusual and creative design.

BUBBLE/BLOCK DIAGRAM
70 ATITHI PRAJAPATI
MODERN ROOTS FINE FOODS
Bubble Diagram # 1:
For the first bubble diagram I quickly just started placing the areas down on the paper and then coming up with the circulation.
Bubble Diagram # 2:
For my second bubble diagram I started thinking about the hours of the market and what will be open till late. I started placing the areas accordingly.
Bubble Diagram # 3:
By the third bubble diagram started I thinking about the function of the space and what should be adjacent. I realized that the open kitchen and the restaurant should be next to each other as it will make it easier for people to grab food from there and take a seat in the restaurant.
Final Bubble _________________ Bubble Diagram # 4:
At last, the fourth bubble diagram fit everything together well. The restaurant made sense to put it in the corner as it is going to be open till late. The open kitchen is right next to the restaurant so it makes it convenient for the customers. And the circulation fits well for my concept, modern roots.
SPACE PLANNING
72 ATITHI PRAJAPATI
Phase 1
LEGEND bathrooms charcuterie checkout circulation coffee bar gelato bar juice bar lockers market office open kitchen & prepared food oyster & sushi bar restaurant stairs walk-in refrigerator wine bar
MODERN ROOTS FINE FOODS
Phase 2
The gelato bar has been moved in the restaurant and replaced it with an condiment area (as shown). The purpose of the gelato bar being in the restaurant is to attract the people to visit it when they are done with lunch/dinner.
The stairs are moved into the open kitchen from the restaurant.
The open kitchen is spread out to allow room for checkout and prepared food area.
The lockers and the offices are moved down to the restaurant to expand the open kitchen.
FLOOR PLAN
74 ATITHI PRAJAPATI
The final floor plan came out to just how I visioned it. I wanted the design to have a twist of modern design and merged well with a bit of traditional. The floor plan communicates my concept with paying close attention to circulation and movement within the space. Taking a note that this is a high traffic space, each area is located at their respected areas for a reason. I decided to keep the market on the far south side because it is closer to the residence side. The coffee bar and juice bar is located near the entrance/exit doors for those quick shop. And finally the restaurant is located at the far north corner because it is going to be open till late and we don’t want the noise level to disappoint the neighbors and local residence. Overall I designed this space as if I was in the space; which helped me determine the layout.

This is the elevation of the living wall in the restaurant area. It is the one of the only walls that doesn’t have floor to ceiling windows. I used this wall to be the focal point when a person walks in. It holds the life; an element that relates to my concept, Modern Roots. The banquette is all wooden material. The two-top tables have marble tops and the chairs are black colored with copper finishes.

WHITE MARBLE
This is the elevation of Gelato Bar which is also located in the restaurant. The reason why I chose to place the Gelato Bar in the restaurant is because dessert is something that falls after lunch or dinner and I want people to visit it right after their meal. To attract people even more, I dropped the ceiling in that area and covered it. I also designed the dropped ceiling in a unique way to emphasize the checkout area. The material used for the counter is wood and the countertop is white marble. I also plan on adding pendent lights at the edge of the bar to make the bar look more lit up than the rest of the restaurant. My target here is to make this bar a secondary focal point.

As a person entered in the restaurant, I wanted a focal point for them to go straight to. I chose the bar area to be in the center along with the reception area. The reason for that is because I wanted the space to look alive and interactive. The back wall is a living green wall. I didn’t want the entire wall to be a living wall because its common, instead I used my concept, modern roots to create a unique design. I also kept the gelato bar in the restaurant area because I want the visitors to visit it after their meal. Which you can view in the next rendering.

The produce area is at the end of the market. It is open and enough room for customers to shop for their groceries. I wanted this area to also look high-end. Therefore I have used a clean black produce display case that is mounted into the wood planks. And to use gold headings to give it a little extra. This area is also next to a floor to ceiling glass wall, which will give enough light and the feeling of openness.

BIOGRAPHY I have been an Interior Designer for the past thirty years specializing in both commercial and residential design. Over the years I have done everything from work in house at an Architecture firm to having my own retail art gallery and interior design business and am currently focusing on high-end residential projects in San Francisco, Portland and Vancouver. I have been teaching at the Academy of Art for 7 years at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Teaching has been a great opportunity for me to share my experience and knowledge of the industry with students. I have been the faculty advisor for the AAU, ASID student chapter as well as worked with the Interior Architecture and Design students on the DIFFA (Dining by Design Event) in San Francisco.

SIMPLICITY AT IT’S FINEST Simplicity at its finest carries a meaning more than its simple words. I want to create a space that shows richness and class through simple design. Classic men are a great example of stating simplicity at its finest. They are well dressed with plain or no patterned fabric and tops their look off with a abstract patterned tie. The colors of the clothing tend to remain simple with one color being light and the other dark. Classic men style also throws in a pop color to show class through their shoes and/or belt. When applying the classic men style to the interior of the space, there will be a design that is simple and yet fine.
floor plan
116 ATITHI PRAJAPATI
The floor plan was developed from the interview of the client. My client, Mr. Ernie, is a single guy who spends most of his time outside home and hardly has any over night visitors. And so the space is designed in a way that he can use the whole house to himself. As soon as he will enter, he will be greeted by a lounge. To the right there is a open modern kitchen attached to a living room. To the left he has his very own outdoor patio and guest bathroom; just in case. Of course he needs to have a home office and his large bedroom and bathroom with views. The overall space plan works very well for my client as he is living alone. And I am very glad he liked it as much as I enjoyed designing it.

Craft coffee drinkers, urban farmers, and casual bar hoppers characterize Hayes Valley, a fashionable neighborhood in the center of San Francisco. Pop-up restaurants, cool boutiques, and independent bookstores make Hayes Valley the object of envy. Jealous neighbors aren’t the only things that are green in this trendy local favorite—playgrounds and artsy park spaces occupy the medians of this stylish neighborhood’s inviting streets.

RESUME After the middle age a life hits a sudden pause. Now that one has had all the fun, made the money and raised great memories, one has entered in the period of old age. It becomes almost hard to think what better can happen in this time when they have enjoyed the fullest in their previous time. That is when a life hits a pause. But we all know that when there is a pause there is always a resume.
color palette
150 ATITHI PRAJAPATI
For this project, I wanted to keep the colors pretty simple and basic. I started off with the color white to bring freshness into the space. Then I went with adding other light tan colors mainly for the flooring that reflected a little towards earthy tones. My main goal was to provide an environment that was fresh and not distracting; a home where the residence had the opportunity to think and reflect. To add a little interest into the space I dropped in a hint of purple and teal. The purple stands for meditation and the teal stands for calmness. These colors will play both roles of bringing in a unique look and nourishing the residences at the same time. At last I brought in gray to smooth and complete my palette.
