Children’s Village

Weaving an Inclusive School Complex into an Urban Retail Fabric

Master Thesis

Year : 2024

Type : Educational Institute | Adaptive Reuse

Area : 39,000 sqm

Location : Müllerstrasse, Berlin

The project proposal is to reimagine the retail relic as a doorway to a safe space for children where outside they have all kinds of educational institutes fragmented, confined accompanying caged playgrounds, seldom unsafe, on the contrary inside of the building, they will have their world - a village of children. Karstadt will house three different types of schools under one roof where they can learn, play and grow together. The aim is to design a space that creates an informal, inviting, playful and educational atmosphere that can act as a centre and thereby contribute to its active urban fabric.

This thesis focuses on the Karstadt Müllerstrasse - a traditional department store on Leopoldplatz, Berlin-Wedding. It was constructed in the 1970s, less than 2 Km from the Berlin Wall.

Today Karstadt is on the verge of abandonment with its inward-facing spatial layout, endless deep floor plans and windowless façades, facing the mentioned challenges. This research explores the potential for repurposing Karstadt beyond its traditional retail function.

The concept of the design proposal portrays a vertical village which will accommodate three educational institutions: a primary school, a high school, and an integrated secondary school. The core idea is to create an interactive learning environment where students of all age groups reside within the same vertical village but attend separate schools.

The three school blocks, each dedicated to its respective age group, are connected by a plaza. This connected plaza acts as a forum, like a living room in a house, with its atrium that not only serve as light wells but also house gardens in the basement levels, contributing to the village's landscape. The cafeteria at the central plaza in the basement mirrors the village square, which will be the communal hub for students from all three schools. The plazas on each floor act as an extension of the village square. SECTION AA

Design of the New Bauakademie

Master’s | Design Studio 2

Year : 2023

Type : Public Institution

Area : 10,125 sqm

Location : Berlin

The site chosen for the upcoming Bauakademie is situated at Schinkeplatz, a prestigious location in the historic centre of Berlin. The original Bauakademie, crafted by architect Friedrich Schinkel in 1836, stands as one of the most groundbreaking structures of 19th-century Berlin. The envisioned Bauakademie aspires to function as a public forum dedicated to the advancement of education, science, research, art, and culture within the domain of construction. Functioning and an exhibition, it aims to embody sustainability. Embracing an open-house academy aspires to be a communal space can gather and actively partake in knowledge exchange.

A double-height shared space flowed throughout the whole building creating an In-between public space that maximizes connectivity and vertical communication.

A pivotal architectural innovation within the design is the introduction of a rotating core. The two L-shaped cores, housing fire stairs and toilet facilities pivot at right angles on each floor, acting as a dynamic landscape for distinct spaces such as meeting rooms, offices, lounges, seminar rooms, exhibition areas, cafés, and team collaboration spaces. This design eliminates the traditional front and back, establishing a public building with entries on all four sides.

Four community staircases, spanning from ground level to the top floor, simulate the atmosphere of a public street within the building. The strategic placement of a co-working café on the uppermost floor further amplifies this effect. In pursuit of sustainability and zero-energy construction, the entire building, from floor slabs to columns, is crafted from timber. The use of a modular grid system ensures flexibility in space utilization, complemented by removable curtain systems serving as partition walls. The new Bauakademie envisions itself as a performing art, with users acting as curators, actively designing and utilizing the space as per their needs.

Hostel in Berlin

International Competition

2nd Prize

Berlin Bohemian Hostel July, 2019

But can we create a utopian space which can be applied to bond us with them?

Bohemianism is the practice of an unconventional and an alternate lifestyle, often in the company of like-minded people and with few permanent ties. Bohemians are considered to have very different tastes in music, fashion, art and literature. Bohemian philosophy is way more nature oriented than us. but if we harm the nature to create a hostel for them, will it be justified? Can we create a co-existence between human and nature?

Bangladesh, is designed as a healing space offering psychosocial support and includes training rooms, separate counselling spaces for men and women, and an courtyard with a pitched roof, offering a safe, calming space for patients using sustainable materials like bamboo and earth flooring, the structure environment. Involving refugees in the construction fostered a sense of space. The project excels in as both a functional and emotionally supportstands as a testament to the power of human-centreed, sustainable design.

So, the hostel for bohemian should be a utopian space where man can exist without harming nature, where bohemian and we can bond together and exchange our different philosophy.

The historic site of KunsthausTacheles has a huge importance in this project.it reflects the history and the tyranny of oppression.

In the process of the design, we create the hostel under the ground level, so the visual connectivity on the site can be undisturbed.Different level of common terrace around the courtyard will increase the bonding among the bohemians, where the transparent roof will enlighten the inner space.

The weather of Berlin doesn’t allow us to open up the courtyard (temperature and snow fall in winter).so, we cover the courtyard with inclined glass box.

On the ground, we create a green park where nature can be re-emerged. the rustic concreate wall of the glass box will complement the co-exist between human and nature. Now, we can create a large sculpture park (which was stopped recently) on the ground.

The park will be a breathing space for the us where we can taste the co-existence between bohemian and us, nature and human, and create a utopian space in our capitalistic society.
