68th Baldwin Fair Fair Manager’s Message
Sixty-eight years ago the first Fair, sponsored by the Baldwin County Cattle & Fair Association was held on Palmer Street in Robertsdale. It was a dream of a group of farmers, businesses and educators to provide an opportunity to share a variety of agricultural activities with the business and industry community. I wonder if the first fair board members in 1950, had any idea that we would still be here sixty-eight years later. They would really be surprised to see the influence of the modern day technology on all our programs. The production and sale of cattle was combined with Cattle Shows for youth activities with school Future Farmers, Homemakers, and 4-H Clubs, formed with the Alabama Cooperative Extension Service, is a project for club booth displays. The addition of a traveling midway for good family entertainment made the package complete. Beginning in1950, the Baldwin County Fair has been all about “Ribbons & Rides.” The Fair has awarded, ribbons for winning entries. Blue ribbons were awarded for 1st place entries, red ribbons for 2nd place entries and white for 3rd place entries in the Creative Arts and Livestock Competition. The same custom is used today. Many participants in these competitions make a hobby of collecting and displaying ribbons from past years. The Fair also provides midway rides and a rodeo for thrill seekers, the weekend Fair Rodeo is a noted tradition in our county Fair, bringing participants from several neighboring states. Our Fair theme is all about “Rib-
bons and Rides”! As we celebrate Alabama’s 200th Bicentennial, our Fair traditions continues to show a reflection to “back in the day.” In the beginning, we started operating the Fair in a donated Federal World War II building, which met the needs of that day, to a modern day $20 million facility that meets our needs of today. I’m excited to think, where the future can take us! From all accounts, it looks Sonny and Melinda Hankins like Baldwin County is having another banner year in Agriculture, Industry & Tourism. I would like to remind everybody, how much God has blessed Baldwin County, making it one of the most desirable places to live in our country. I’m looking forward to see all of you at the Fair!

From The Office Of
John McMillan
Alabama’s Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries It’s That Time Again…Harvest Time and County Fair Season! As summer gives way to fall, you may see combines and other farm equipment busy in the fields harvesting this year’s crop, but you will also see friends and families gather at your county fair in communities across Alabama. Some of my most vivid memories as a kid, growing up in Baldwin County, are of going to the county fair. There is something reassuring about going to John McMillan the fair that no matter how the world changes, every year about this time there will always be a celebration of the bounty of our land; this year is no exception. The nearly 600,000 Alabama farmers, foresters and agribusiness workers are responsible for contributing over $70 billion a year to our state’s economy. They are the backbone of our economy, working hard every day to help feed and clothe the world. I hope you will take the opportunity while at the fair to visit the exhibits and learn as much as you can about the livestock, local foods, and those who produce them. Experience all of it, as these events are about where we live and the people who work to make the fairs successful. This will be my last year to serve as your Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries, I hope you know what an honor and privilege it has been to serve you in this capacity. I have enjoyed being a part of the Alabama county fairs and visiting with fellow Alabamians who support them. You and your family, as a result of attending and supporting your county fair, are a part of an incredible resource. The employees of the Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries send best wishes to all who make our county fairs a success each year. Thank you for your continued support for Alabama farmers, foresters, and agribusiness! Sincerely, JOHN McMILLAN JOHN McMILLAN Commissioner

PIONEERING FAMILY – FOUNDING FATHERS OF THE ITALIAN COLONY By DeAnne O’Shea Green As I stand in front of the mirror applying my “war paint,” my husband calls it, I see myself. I apply mascara and look into my eyes. The familial past can be like a mirror. Using it, we can see a sense of where our identity is derived. In my life, I can see my reflection through the study of my family history because there are so many “mirrors” that replicate my own life. Lipstick is done. I’m ready to face the day. I call out to my husband; “ready” and we depart our home to drive to Christ the King Catholic Church in Daphne. Gerald was introduced to Elaine Weaver-O’Shea by mutual friends who enjoyed the 50’s style dance, the “Boogie Woogie” with its fast-paced moves like the “Jitterbug,” the “Jive” and the “Mashed Potato.” After two years of courtship, they married in 1972 at Christ the King Church. A ready-made family of four children ages 7 through 10, they would uproot from Mobile to move into their new home located at 1401 Main St. in Olde Towne Daphne. A 4,950-square-footm two-story building with four enormous white columns with its Greek reinforcement portico and large front balcony, it contained Jerry’s business – Bert’s TV Sales & Service on the bottom floor, and the second floor was the family residence. Elaine, an office manager and full-time nurse, made the commute to Mobile daily and Jerry would oversee the children by assigning household chores, hand-picking weeds in the garden, cutting grass and many times going with him on service calls as a helper. They would raise their children devout Catholic and attend Christ the King and McGill-Toolen High schools. One time he forgot a holy day of obligation. He told all four kids, “Let’s go now!” In play clothes, the kids walked the block with him to the church entering a whopping 15 minutes late for Mass. Talk about slumping down into the pew! Jerry was tough on the children. If he said, “don’t leave the yard,” he meant not even your big toe, or you were grounded for a week. Telephone calls to friends from school were a minimum of 10 minutes. And though dishwashing machines were available, he believed he had four built-in washers after the family meal and each child took a rotating week. On Saturdays, Elaine would load up the kids, drive the station wagon up the two blocks to 1715 Main St. to “Red” Trione’s Store and Meat Market. Arthur Manci’s Antique Club was adjacent. Jerry’s brother, Tommy, was the store’s local butcher. When her cart was full, the cashier rang up her items and she was given a hand-written bill for the total. Store credit; paid monthly. Daphne was a small town back then, nothing like the big city lights with its movie theaters premiering the newest release or its brick and mortar department stores and malls. It has a history of its own. The community was predominantly practicing Catholics and somehow it seemed everyone was related to one another. With my undying curiosity, I researched to learn, the first generation of Bertagnolli’s to arrive in the United States were 18 • 68th Baldwin County Fair 2018

Henry and Genervara Bertagnolli and their nine children.
This past June, the Baldwin County Commission and Baldwin County Historic Development Commission, in honor of the Italian Colony and its Founding Fathers, unveiled a new historic marker in Daphne. It is located at the corner of County Road 64 and Alabama 181 in Belforest.
Constante and his two sisters, Angela and Teresa, who were born in the village of Dermulo in the Province of Trento in the Northern Italian Alps. Because of economic times in their homeland, they worked their way through Germany and France to obtain the money for train fare and ship passage to sail from the French port of LaHarve. They would settle in Braidwood, Illinois, in 1883. After seeing a newspaper ad to recruit colonists to live the pioneer lifestyle, they moved to join many other family members in the new Italian Colony. Many purchased 10 to 40 plots to clear land for farming, building homes, a cotton gin, a saw mill, packing sheds and general stores. BALDWINCOFAIR.COM
Constante married Maria Facinelli and together they had 13 children. He along with his sons owned that building at 1401 Main St. and they farmed and ran a general store and sold what they produced. His son Henry married Genervara Green and would have nine children – Gerald, Donald, Henry, Billy and Tommy, twins Mike, Pat, Anthony, and Margaret. He too, along with his sons, also owned and operated a general store from 1401 Main St. Wait a minute! That’s 22 children in two generations – multiplied by marriages and offspring – that make for a pretty large extended family, including Guarisco, Manci, Trione, Allegri, Lazzeri and Simms, spread throughout Baldwin County, in existence today. It wasn’t understood until much later in my life why this man who raised me was so tough, unyielding. Gerald was a prominent, respected businessman like his father Henry and his grandfather Constante, who is reported as one of the founding fathers of the Italian Colony of Daphne in 1893. He owned several “plots” himself and was actively involved in the Boy Scouts of America, Knights of Columbus and bowled on the local league in Fairhope. As the final hymn was sung and the Mass of Christian Burial is complete, we rise to leave the church. We get into our cars to make the procession to the Belforest Catholic Cemetery to lay my father Gerald Francis “Bert” Bertagnolli to rest alongside my mother Elaine. He joins his father, mother and brothers to his final resting place. Though I was not born of the Italian blood, this man raised me with his pioneer nobility. He

was the only Dad I knew. He was firm. He intended what he said. He taught me discipline and my enduring tenacity to pursue. This is how he lived Today, I am at peace – I am complete understanding him, what he endured in his lifetime and how I have replicated his legacy. In memory of Gerald F. Bertagnolli – July 29, 1933-April 13, 2018.

ADPH encourages petting zoo, animal exhibit safety at fair ADPH release MONTGOMERY — The Alabama Department of Public Health encourages using safe practices to prevent the spread of disease while attending petting zoos and animal exhibits during the 68th annual Baldwin County Fair. ADPH encourages all those attending, especially children, to observe the “Wash Your Hands” and “No Food or Drink” signs that will be posted at points of entry and exit of animal exhibits. Below are some simple and effective steps recommended to reduce the hazards to visitors of animal areas: • Visitors should not eat or drink in the animal area. • All visitors should wash their hands after leaving the animal area. • Convenient hand-washing stations (using only potable water) with an available waterless hand sanitizer should be provided at the exit of the animal area.
20 • 68th Baldwin County Fair 2018
• As an additional precaution, it is recommended that rabies vaccinations be given to all animals in petting zoo areas. Also, all animals which exhibit signs of illness should be removed from public contact immediately. Registered animals will be shown by age – youngest to oldest (6 months to 25 months are eligible to show) 3. Each Breed must have at least six head for breed classification. Otherwise they will be put into Other Breeds division. Steers & Commercial Heifers 1. Steers & Commercial Heifers will be shown by weight groups. This Code has been developed to meet the following objectives:
• To ensure the health and well-being of all animals at the fair. • To demonstrate an accurate and responsible animal care message to the public. • To maintain the integrity of all livestock competitions, displays and sales. • Livestock and poultry must be transported to and from the fair in accordance with all humane transport regulations and standards. • Loading and unloading must be undertaken using proper equipment and procedures. • All animals must be treated and handled in a responsible manner. The well-being of the animals shall take precedence over the demands of owners, sellers, buyers, organizers, sponsors and officials. • The care of all animals must be as consistent as possible with their normal schedules and standards. High standards of nutrition, health, sanitation, environment and safety must be met at all times. • Livestock should be prepared with proper training, fitting and grooming prior to the fair. Excessive disciplining of animals at the fair is unacceptable. • Exhibitors are expected to provide adequate training for anyone handling their livestock. and handling practices. Rules and Regulations for Goats, Sheep, Poultry and Rabbits • The judging of all animals will be judged on accomplishments. • All animal exhibits will stay on exhibit for the full duration of the fair. Removal of the animals before the designated dismissal time will result in forfeiture of awards, unless approved by a fair official. • All individuals exhibiting live animals are required to register their exhibits at the livestock registration table on Monday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. the week of the fair. Contestant numbers and stall/pen cards will be assigned at this time. • If the animal does not fall into a specific recognized breed, it will be classified in an “Other” breed category. The same limit applies in this category (*See specific breed limitation) • Stalls/pens, water and bedding will be provided by the management. Each exhibitor will be responsible for furnishing their animal’s water and feed devices and for keeping his/her area clean and neat during the fair. • General care, grooming, cleaning stall and feeding of animals will be the responsibility of the exhibitor with assistance only from a parent, guardian or fellow exhibitor. • Exhibitors and parents offering guidance are expected to demonstrate courtesy and respect toward all livestock, peer exhibitors and all individuals in the fairgrounds. Anyone exhibiting inappropriate
behavior may be disqualified and/or asked to leave the premises. • All animals must be the actual property of the exhibitor and registered at the fair under his or her name, not a group or farm name. Should any entry be found to be otherwise entered, any award by judges will be forfeited. • In the event there is but one entry in a class, the placing shall depend on the merit of the entry and the award made at the discretion of the judge. • Each exhibitor is encouraged to fill out a fact sheet about their exhibits to be displayed for additional interesting information about the particular animal or breed.
