my Buckhead
I’m just not sure where the time goes but it’s flying by. I joined the Atlanta Best Media team a little over 2 years ago and it’s been a whirlwind ever since. The team here has been busy producing eight of Atlanta’s top lifestyle magazines, which include our flagships, My Home Improvement (formerly Atlanta Home Improvement) and Best Self Atlanta. We also have six hyperlocal publications underneath our ever-growing umbrella—My Intown, My Alpharetta, My East Cobb, My Buckhead, My Sandy Springs, and My Vinings/Smyrna. Each My Neighborhood magazine is community driven and area-specific. You will find key advice provided by home service pros regarding everything from lighting and roofing to flooring and foundation repair (p. 22). You will also find our three-month calendar of events filled with fun happenings for you and your family to enjoy.

All in the Family For more than four decades, Howard Payne Company has been a trusted resource for homeowners. The third-generation business now offers Samsung’s smart kitchen appliances, which are ideal for the tech-savvy. By Jennifer Colosimo
T
hree of the pillars Howard Payne Jr. founded his kitchen appliance company on in 1976 were Christian values, hard work and making friends. Today, the third-generation company maintains that legacy—a team built from family and
close friends with more than 180 years of experience combined, operating on honesty and fairness and showing why doing business this way is the most important bottom line.
“We’re built on integrity, character, hard work, a willing spirit—all of those things lend itself to building a successful company,” says Jeff Payne, co-owner. “There’s no magic bullet—it’s just being honest and fair and doing what you say you’re going to do. The rest takes care of itself.” “People can buy these products anywhere, but we know they’re buying from WE’RE BUILT ON us because of what we stand for and who we are,” adds , Jon Payne, co-owner. “They’re buying from A WILLING us because that’s like SPIRIT—ALL OF buying from friends. THOSE THINGS That’s how my dad LEND ITSELF did it, that’s what he TO BUILDING A taught us and so that’s SUCCESSFUL how we’re still COMPANY. doing it.” —JEFF PAYNE

It’s also hard to argue against their success that proves it. In 43 years, the shop has evolved from its original Chamblee-Tucker Road location into a 22,500-square-foot building that boasts an expansive luxury showroom, private offices and large warehouse. Run today by Payne’s sons, Jon and Jeff, the staff has grown from one employee to 20, including five grandsons and a fourth generation only a few years away. They carry the most high-end appliance brands in the industry like Sub-Zero, Wolf, Thermador, Viking, KitchenAid, Bosch, Samsung and more. In short, they’ve made a name for themselves in the industry, truly owning their reputation as Atlanta’s premier kitchen appliance dealer.
2/18/19 2:58 PM
The gorgeous showroom, which offers a warm and welcoming feel, was designed by interior designer Becky Payne (Jon’s wife). The talented visionary is also responsible for the addition of the new Samsung vignette that was brought to the showroom last year. This special space showcases the brand’s Chef Collection, a line appealing to a digitally affluent demographic that wants to operate their kitchen from their smartphone. For a generation that depends on staying connected in every aspect of life, this line helps them build a kitchen that will definitely look good, but also earn its keep. “The Samsung Chef Collection is also perfect for our clients who don’t necessarily want to spend as much on an appliance package, but still want those very unique features,” says Jeff. MY DAD ALWAYS SAID YOU’RE NOT JUST SELLING APPLIANCES, “They can see what’s in their fridge or preheat their oven . from an app on their —JEFF PANYE phone.”

“
Staying in tune with their customers is just a part of what distinguishes the experience at Howard Payne Company. Even after you’ve picked out your new appliances, Howard Payne Company handles everything using its own team, such as the delivery and installation in about four to six weeks, as well as coordinating services and repairs once they’re installed. Removing third-party hiccups means appliances are ready to use as soon as the Howard Payne team has left. “We want it to be a great experience,” says Jon. “Working hard and treating people fairly—that’s what we want to do.” “My dad always said you’re not just selling appliances, you’re building a relationship,” says Jeff. “He didn’t have many hobbies, because he genuinely loved coming to work and helping people. I’m lucky I can say the same thing … I only wish our dad was here to see it.” When the Payne family wants to go out for a bite to eat after work, they swing by Taqueria del Sol. They love the food there and even order catering from the restaurant for many of the events at the showroom. This “smart” line of chef-inspired appliances complements a connected, on-the-go lifestyle that nods to both the art of cooking and the need for efficiency. With almost 30 pieces on display, this section gets you hands on with some of the most exciting features. From your smartphone, the Family Hub Refrigerator lets you see what’s inside, keeps track of your grocery inventory, signals upcoming expiration dates, suggests recipes, and more. Sammie Hasen WRITER • HIKER • BUDDING BIOMEDICAL ENTREPRENEUR By Stacy Moser
Sammie Hasen isn’t your typical college sophomore. At the age of 20, she’s already published a book (donating the proceeds from its sale to local charities), studies Biomedical Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology, and holds down a job as a researcher at Emory University. This Atlanta native says she’s always been fascinated with issues surrounding pediatric illness and, more specifically, what she could do about it someday. She hails from a family full of doctors but, rather than following in their footsteps, she aims to be an entrepreneur. “I want to create my own products—devices to help solve pediatric medical problems,” she says confidently. “I decided to study engineering so I can run my own business. After I graduate, I’ll hopefully create a startup— someday I’ll be a CEO.”
I WANT TO CREATE MY OWN PRODUCTS—DEVICES TO HELP SOLVE PEDIATRIC MEDICAL PROBLEMS. —SAMMIE HASEN She fell into the role of author accidentally several years ago, when she visited her grandparents in New York City. She recalls being seated near a young boy at a restaurant and, during their conversation, he revealed that he had brain cancer. “He wasn’t down about it, though,” she says. “He was full of hope. That was when I had this idea to put together a book that would inspire other kids who are suffering from serious illnesses.”
MARCH – MAY 2019
She compiled the stories of 20 people who suffered from critical ailments as kids, sharing their uplifting messages of hope in her book, “Long Live the Little Ones.” She self-published the book and sells it online, donating the proceeds to her favorite local nonprofits, Enduring Hearts (helping children who’ve had heart transplants), the Arthritis Foundation’s juvenile division, and Lighthouse Family Retreat, which provides retreats for families of kids who suffer from cancer.

“I used to do these wilderness trips when I was a kid, and I really admired my counselor, who had contracted thyroid cancer at 18 years old. Ten years later, there she was—backpacking, hiking, doing all these amazing things. She’s one of the people in my book.” And when Sammie has a well-deserved moment to relax, she goes for a run down Peachtree Street and then hops in her car and heads to Taqueria del Sol for a brisket taco. “They’re the best,” she says. Keri Potts VICTIMS’ ADVOCATE • ESPN’S VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR • ATHLETE By Stacy Moser
Keri Potts is a woman adept at getting the word out. She’s the senior director of communications for ESPN (Entertainment and Sports Programming Network), overseeing its college sports division. She landed a coveted foot in the door at the network 16 years ago with her penchant for public relations and her background as an accomplished volleyball player at Syracuse University. But Keri’s trajectory to the upper ranks at ESPN could have been sidelined in 2008, when she was violently assaulted while on vacation in Italy. She escaped her attacker by hurtling off a balcony, running from rooftop to rooftop until she found her way back to her hotel, bloody and bruised.
ONE IN FIVE WOMEN IS RAPED BETWEEN THE AGES OF 18 AND 49.
—KERI POTTS
Keri credits her bosses at ESPN for supporting her through the ordeal. “They flew me out of Italy, found me counseling right away, and helped me find an attorney overseas. They were trauma informed and victim centered before that was a thing. My biggest concern was—could I keep my job? My health insurance? I needed flexibility to work through it, and they gave it to me.” “When this happens overseas,” she says, “you become this misfit in our legal system.”
“Helping people gives me joy,” she explains. As a certified victims’ advocate, Keri counsels women at MOSAIC Georgia’s Sexual Assault and Children’s Advocacy Centers, earning her ESPN’s Volunteer of the Year award in 2017. Also that year, she became vice president of the board of Pathways to Safety International, the only U.S. organization providing comprehensive services to Americans sexually assaulted or abused abroad. When Keri needs time to unwind, she hits CorePower Yoga at Ponce City Market and also enjoys walking on the Atlanta BeltLine from Edgewood Avenue to Piedmont Park. “The BeltLine is truly an experience. It connects me to so much of the community and the people here in a way cars do not allow,” she says. AFightBackWoman.com, PathwaysToSafety.org

“One in five women is raped between the ages of 18 and 49,” she says HATCHER AND KERI POT TS with concern in her voice. “Those are our prime working years. It’s hard to stay employed if you’re a victim. I didn’t want women to be scared—I want to be a living example of what to do.” So Keri launched A Fight Back Woman, Inc., speaking on gender-based violence and assisting individuals who face the same issues she has.

FOUNDATION REPAIR
Q
What are the primary causes of foundation issues?
A
Soil. In Georgia, we live on expansive red clay, which is highly susceptible to climate and temperature changes. When it rains heavily, that soil will expand and wash out. When we experience periods of drought, the soil will dry out and crumble. Whether caused by wash Tom DiGregorio and Joe Rusk out or dry out, that soil will weaken and can serve as a catalyst for multiple forms of foundation issues, including foundation settlement and foundation wall damage.

LANDSCAPE
Q
How do I keep my landscape looking lively in the wintertime?
A
Yards can often look tired in the winter. Instead of waiting till March or April to add mulch spread, make sure to mulch right after all the leaves have dropped in January. This, along with the addition of colorful glazed pots and winter flowering plants like the American holly, can help make your landscape look a lot more fresh Evan Rogers and Pete Wilkerson and alive.

Q
What problems can uneven concrete cause?
A
Years in Business: 19 Associations: NARI, BBB A+ Rated, Atlanta
Make sure your home stays cozy by having your roof inspected every two years. A reputable company should clean gutters and valleys of debris, check boots over protruding pipes and chimneys for cracks, and ensure your attic has an appropriate amount of insulation. To prevent ice damage, we generally recommend that you Chad Cruce have a professional increase ventilation, add insulation, seal air leaks, and remove overhanging tree limbs.

Aside from the eyesore that uneven concrete creates, the best reason to repair is to keep people safe. Uneven concrete can be a liability causing trips and falls. Plus, in certain areas, uneven concrete can lead to water drainage issues and cause costly structural damage.

Q
How do I spot a water leak before it becomes a big problem?
A
On your water bill, look for high usage, which can indicate a leak. Search your basement or crawl space for possible leaks as well. Our best advice? Have a licensed plumber perform a whole-home plumbing inspection annually. He or she will ensure your entire system is in good shape and spot Jerry Hall potential leaks you are unaware of, such as slow-running toilets or waterline leaks underground.

WATER PROOFING
Q
Why is it important to waterproof my basement for the winter?
A
Homeowners should know that winter is the best time of year to waterproof their basement because here in Georgia the spring rains start in February. By being proactive and not reactive, you will be handling your foundation issue before the spring rains occur saving you the hassle of having to deal with Derek Ritchie your basement flooding and water damage to your personal property. People often look for things that will catch the eye, with either texture or variation. Adding flooring to a wall space is great for highlighting a fireplace or breakfast nook. While you can use just about any flooring as wall décor, they make laminate and luxury vinyl lines for wall applications. These thinner, less heavy-duty versions of high-traffic Elisabeth Stubbs flooring are typically cheaper and easier to install vertically.

Aside from the benefit of moderating the temperature in surrounding rooms, (especially above the garage), insulation also quiets the operation sound of the door and increases durability. If you have a noninsulated steel door, there are insulation panels you can install but most models come with insulation John Nale in them. It’s usually a better investment to purchase a door with insulation than to go back and add it.

How do I properly maintain my outdoor lighting?
A
Since outdoor systems are exposed to the elements 365 days a year, we recommend annual maintenance at the very least. This process often includes pruning away foliage, cleaning the lenses, repositioning the lights if they have been knocked out of alignment, replacing timer batteries, and reburying any exposed wire from water erosion. Q A
What’s wrong with vinyl windows?
Vinyl windows are made of plastic material and do not withstand changes in temperature as well as fiberglass windows. Integrity windows from Marvin Windows and Doors are comprised of Ultrex® pultruded fiberglass, which outperforms vinyl and vinyl/wood composites in virtually every measurable category. Plus, the production of vinyl windows requires more energy and Peter Morrison resource consumption than the production of Ultrex®.

Also, have your system properly maintained twice a year by an authorized factory representative. Finally, if your system is out of date consider replacing it with a new two-stage or variable speed system. Bill Mashraky and Mike Eberle

Raise money by throwing down. Brawl for a Cause founder Matt Thomas gives people the chance to fight for a cause they choose. For example, Erika Rodriguez, a single
mother will fight for her daughter’s leg surgery,
which will enable her to walk without braces. You can be any size or weight to step in the ring. With just eight weeks of coaching with Decatur Boxing Club and X3 Sports, you’ll be ready for the Vegas-style fight night on April 6. Georgia World Congress Center. BrawlForACause.com
