WINTER 2019

Dear Intown Neighbors, I’ve been playing basketball since I was in high school. I remember coach Robert Hamilton welcoming me to the team and challenging me at our practices. He’d say, “Laurie! You can’t eat fast food and expect to move quickly up and down the court!” Of course, I’d mumble under my breath, “My name is not Laurie. It’s Laura. And I really like McDonald’s cheeseburgers!” Well, hindsight is 20/20. I’ve been playing on basketball teams ever since my days with coach Hamilton, and he was right! What you put into your body definitely shows on and off the court. Whether practicing my jump shot for hours or hitting the weight room, coach Hamilton always pushed me to be my best.

Dogs Gone Wild For the past 20 years, dogs and humans have fallen in love with WAG-A-LOT, a day care, boarding, and grooming paradise for pups. The innovative brand will soon unleash a new location on the Upper Westside.

S

elf-proclaimed life enthusiast, Craig Koch came up with the perfect name for his dog day care, boarding and grooming

SEPTEMBER – NOVEMBER 2019

“WAG-A-LOT is not only the telltale sign of a happy dog but the name embodies the notion that dogs and their humans should live life to the fullest every day,” Koch says.

12

After opening one of the nation’s first doggie day care concepts, two human kids, and eight rescue dogs later, Koch is humbled by the support and trust his team has received from Atlanta’s pet parent community. The company’s numerous Best of Atlanta awards from various publications are a testament to its standards of excellence.

WE STRIVE TO PROVIDE CONSTANT “UPDATES ON YOUR DOG’S BEHAVIOR AND WELL-BEING. TOTAL TRANSPARENCY IS KEY.”

Over the decades, Koch’s commitment to providing the best experience possible for dog and human clients alike has never —CRAIG KOCH waned. “Safety is always our first priority and is followed very closely by providing a fun, clean, and caring environment for our canine customers. Communicating clearly with our human customers is paramount as well. We strive to provide constant updates on your dog’s behavior and well-being. Total transparency is key,” says Koch.

facility when he opened WAG-A-LOT in 1999.

8/27/19 10:18 AM

The ever-growing popularity of WAG-A-LOT has led to the development of locations in Decatur and Downtown, and one that will soon open Nov. 1 on the Upper Westside. A seasoned staff will oversee this state-of-the-art facility, providing dog day care, boarding, and grooming services along with carefully curated retail options. Expect quaint overnight boarding dens, two spacious indoor play areas with adjoining outdoor yards for pups to roam, webcams so fur moms and dads can check in on all of the fun, and more. The Decatur and Downtown locations aren’t being left in the dust either and are both getting upgrades to the tune of $500,000. The stars of these renovations are the new overnight dog dens that will raise the bar in boarding accommodations. “We worked with Mason Company to custom design and build mini rooms for our guests that offer a heightened sense of privacy, safety, cleanliness and comfort,” says Koch. “Small touches, like a soft green plant by the room number of each den, remind our guests and staff that this is not a traditional kennel.” The brand’s current staff boasts 259 collective years of experience. Each dog who visits one of WAG-A-LOT’s facilities benefits from consistent and loving care by this expert group. Jen Hunt began her career at WAG-A-LOT 13 years ago as a WAG specialist, and today, she is the general WAG manager for all locations.

The Umphenour Family SPORTS FANS • VOLUNTEERS • OUTDOOR ENTHUSIASTS By Katherine Sauceda

Businesswoman and author of the new young adult novel “Perfekt,” Kimmy Umphenour is never too busy to lend a helping hand. Since 2008, she has served as the financial officer for Children Helping Children (CHC), an organization that connects youth with nonprofits. Kimmy volunteers alongside her kids, Rider, 12, and Eavie, 10, both recipients of the Good Citizens Award from Woodward Academy, and utilizes her position with CHC to show them the true impact charitable contributions can have on the community.

Q: How did your family get involved with CHC? Kimmy Umphenour: When Michelle [Hodgson] started CHC 11 years ago, I thought to myself, ‘There is no way we can’t get involved with this.’ Now, I oversee the end of the year financial reports. It’s amazing to see how quickly this organization has grown organically, not only through social media, but simply by people sharing their CHC experiences with others.

Q: What are your family’s favorite CHC events? KU: My family and I are active members. We’ve enjoyed helping with initiatives like stuffing the Be Well Bear backpacks [filled with activities for children in hospitals] and attending events like Cocktails in the Clouds [a fundraising soirée] and the LOVEFEST- Free Family Philanthropic Festival [an event where children can take part in service projects]. Rider and Eavie look forward to it every year. They love being with their friends, exploring the different booths, and participating in all the LOVEFEST activities. My son especially loves to run the FLY-K [an annual fun run before the festival].

Q: How has CHC benefited your family?

Q: What are some Intown spots you love to frequent? KU: We love having family time with our dogs, Ginger, Scarlett, and Brownie, in Piedmont Park. We also enjoy playing baseball and basketball, though some of us prefer to just watch! A few of our favorite places to grab a bite from are The Original El Taco, Varuni Napoli, and Press & Grind. chcatlanta.org, evannicholsnovels.com

KU: CHC does a great job of teaching kids not only to be charitable, but to meaningfully give back to their communities. When my kids participate in CHC, they have a true understanding of what they’re doing and the impact it can have. We don’t do this for recognition but to touch other people’s lives in purposeful ways.

Financial Wellness Booster Shots for Atlanta Business Owners By Cliff Oxford

B

y now, most of us understand there’s no magic pill or quick fix for weight loss. Persistence pays off. Likewise, financial wellness takes discipline. Once you’ve got the basics taken care of (funding retirement, being smart about taxes, and managing debt wisely) you’re ready to take it to the next level.

annually. Bonus: Money you put into a captive insurance company is subject to the capital gains tax rate (20%) rather than the ordinary income tax rate (37%).

Get creative with compensation.

Maximize your personal wealth and minimize your financial risks with these seven wealth-building tips for business owners:

Treat your HSA (health savings account) like a retirement account.

You get an immediate tax break for annual HSA payments, and the principle and interest grow tax-deferred if you ultimately use the funds for medical expenses. Consider an HSA as an alternative to buying long term care insurance. The key is to start early and let it grow until you reach retirement (when medical expenses tend to increase). Be your own landlord. Consider a lease back for company assets such as buildings, equipment, and cars. A leaseback arrangement means you buy the building/ equipment/car, then lease it back to the company. There can be significant financial, tax and personal wealth building advantages to owning versus paying rent.

Self-insure your business. High-

income earning business owners can selfinsure their business using what’s called a “captive insurance company.” This means you’re underwriting your own supplemental property and casualty insurance to cover exclusions or exemptions not covered in the regular market, rather than paying a bona fide insurance company. Your business may deduct up to $2.2 million in premiums

compensation arrangements can make top talent more affordable. They get paid what they’re worth, and you get most out of your investment.

Tap into the gig economy. The gig

economy, with its wide array of independent workers, gives small to mid-size companies more affordable access to professional expertise in areas such as creative services and sales support. Caveat: Avoid creating a de-facto employee relationship by exerting too much control over how, when and where independent contractors do their work.

Hire family. Pay your kids to appear in advertising and make a one-time contribution to their Roth IRA as compensation. You save money on marketing, and your kids get a head start on their own savings.

CPA firm that provides integrated tax and investment planning services to avoid tax time surprises. Basic financial wellness gives you the freedom to take advantage of wealthbuilding opportunities like these and more. If you don’t already have your business and personal finances in order, there is no time like the present to start. WINDOW COVERINGS

Q

What are the best options for letting in plenty of light but still maintaining privacy?

A

We have a large variety of window treatments that maximize light while minimizing visibility from the outdoors into your home. Our plantation shutters are a popular choice because you can easily tilt the louvers to certain angles Andrea and Sean Zare allowing light to stream through. We can also add a center divider that allows you to close the bottom portion of the shutters for privacy and keep the top portion open for light.

Gray tones seem to be most popular at the moment but we can mix and match paint hues to suit your personal style. We have color consultants and designers and supply sample quarts to help in your paint selections. We always put up samples for owners to view before painting a Charlie Dallavalle whole home. People are adding more and more edible areas to their landscape, investing in blueberry bushes and kitchen gardens where they can grow things like lettuce, parsley, and kale. We are also seeing a lot of people incorporating tomatoes, cucumbers, ornamental peppers and more into their perennial gardens Evan Rogers and Pete Wilkerson so they can enjoy the harvest and the visual appeal. Have a smaller space? Consider starting a potted herb garden with rosemary and parsley on your back porch or patio.

Q A

What are the best flooring options for kids and pets?

Flooring types that are durable and stain resistant like laminates and luxury vinyl are quite popular because they are easy to take care of. Tile is very practical but Atlanta homeowners generally gravitate toward the warm feeling of a faux wood that has the appearance of wood. If you want real wood choose a floor with a lot of character so you don’t have to stress Elisabeth Stubbs when life happens and you get inevitable dings and scratches.

CONCRETE

Q A

What causes uneven concrete and cracks?

Most uneven and cracking concrete is caused by settlement. Settlement is due to one of three things: poorly compacted soil, erosion or decay. Prior to pouring, concrete preparation is extremely important for its longevity. Topsoil, clay and loose fill should be removed and a good base material should be installed and, most importantly, compacted. Erosion occurs when water is Michael Cangemi not properly managed around the concrete and decay oftentimes is the result of something organic under the concrete that decomposes over time.

OUTDOOR LIGHTING

Q

What are the different ways I can control my lighting system?

A

Traditional astronomical digital timers are the most popular, since they are economical. Your lights will come on at dusk and go off at whatever time you designate. We do not typically recommend Wi-Fi-enabled devices controlled via a smartphone because your lights will not come on if there is an issue with your internet. Proximity is usually an issue with Bluetooth-enabled controllers so we definitely stay away from them. If Lindsey Rodericks you want to control your landscape lights along with other exterior or interior lights from the same control point, we recommend hard-wired technology such as UPB.

Q

How can a new thermostat help make my home more energy efficient?

A

Many Programmable Thermostats can be set to turn off when no one is home or to adjust the temperature to use less energy when residents are away. A Wi-Fi thermostat can also be adjusted from a distance when schedules change. Installing sophisticated high-tech thermostats like Lennox i-comfort S30 can automatically change over switches between heating and cooling depending on indoor temperatures. The smart away mode on the Bill Mashraky Lennox i-comfort S30 works with devices such as Amazon Alexa.

There are several signs to look for when trying to determine if replacing your windows (and doors) should be the next project on your home improvement list. Some of these telltale signs include difficult operation, drafty windows (aka loss of energy efficiency), condensation between the glass panes, and water stains, chipping or deterioration on or around the window. Peter Morrison Even if you don’t notice all of these signs, replacement can still be a great choice if your home needs a makeover or you want to reduce your energy bill.

Q

Why is it important to have my crawl space inspected for water damage? What can be done if I notice a leak?

A water leak in your basement can easily lead to mold growth, which can cause health problems. The water can also deteriorate the wood by dryrotting the framing, which also attracts termites to the softer wood. The dry rot can lead to shifting of the frame resulting in door Derek Ritchie functionality problems and cracking of walls. The moment you suspect a leak, call a professional basement, crawl space and encapsulation company to get ahead of these problems.
