As I prepare to move into 2020, I want to continue being mindful of others. If I can surprise my favorite grocery store clerk with a gift card to her favorite restaurant, I will. And if I can do my part to mentor budding journalists, I will. Each act of kindness—no matter how small or large—helps. Join me in doing our part to make Vinings/Smyrna and the world a better place!

SURFER • RESTAURATEUR • LITERATURE BUFF By Stacy Moser

David Green has the restaurant business in his blood. Immersed in the culinary industry since he was 20 years old, he’s now one of the faces behind the successful Paces & Vine, managing owner of the charming eatery in Vinings Jubilee. There are a number of reasons that Paces & Vine is such a hit with locals in the Vinings neighborhood. “Our secret to success is that we’re a local gathering place for people to come out and eat great food, drink and meet other locals. We know almost everybody who comes in very well,” David explains enthusiastically. “Even more important is our restaurant’s culture. We’re a family and we care about each other.”

THE THING MOST PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT RESTAURANTS HERE IS THAT WE

ALL SUPPORT EACH OTHER.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALLIE ARANT.

Now, along with several of his partners in Paces & Vine, David took the show on the road. They recently launched a new project—The Select, a restaurant located in the freshly minted City Springs development in Downtown Sandy Springs. The restaurant’s name pays homage to Paris’s famous Le Select, where Gertrude Stein, Ernest Hemingway and Pablo Picasso would gather to exchange their visions for post-WWI social change in the worlds of art and literature. “Basically, they would share camaraderie over great food and wine,” David says. “That’s the inspiration for this new restaurant.” “The thing most people don’t know about restaurants here is that we all support each other,” he shares. “Vinings is actually a really small town and we all know each other well. Sometimes we have to borrow things from each other, or we’ll talk about what’s going on in the marketplace. We see each other at fundraisers. We work hard almost every day of the week; when everybody else is off—that’s our peak time. We’re in it together.” David enjoys swimming for exercise, preparation for his favorite vacation activity—surfing. On a rare evening off, he takes his girlfriend, Dani Geisinger, to 101 Steak, Canoe, or SOHO American Bistro for date night. He proudly shares that she has two daughters, Hannah, who plays viola with a full-ride scholarship to Juilliard, and Kaila, who attends Vanderbilt University, also on a full-ride, playing the harp. “They are the sweetest people I’ve ever met,” he says. “I’m a really lucky guy.” pacesandvine.com

Kwavi Agbeyegbe M O T H E R • M O T I VA T O R • W O R L D T R AV E L E R By Alex McCray

As the owner of Global Grace LLC, a lifestyle business that empowers women, Kwavi Agbeyegbe is passionate about spreading the message that the second half of a woman’s life can be the best half—physically and mentally. The 12-year Smyrna resident is also the creator of the Kwavithon 5K, which benefits the Mirabel Centre, a Sexual Assault Referral Centre based in Lagos, Nigeria. In addition, she was recently named a 2019 Over 40 & Fabulous! Fab 5 winner by Best Self Atlanta.

Q

How did your passion for health and wellness develop?

Kwavi Agbeyegbe: When I was 19 and in college in London, England, I saw a documentary about cattle and the process they go through before they get to our table as beef. It was disturbing, and the conditions in which they were being raised were despicable. After watching the documentary, I made the decision to not eat red meat. I then extended it to chicken and all types of processed food. I investigated everything I put into my mouth. I stopped drinking sodas and juices. Water became my drink of choice. I’ve been on the wellness path ever since, and at 51, I can truly say I have experienced the benefits of living a healthy lifestyle.

Q

What inspired you to launch Global Grace LLC?

18

Today, I’m also the founder of The Simply Vibrant Life, which offers international wellness retreats to destinations like Thailand and Marrakesh. These trips have been curated to delight, surprise, and inspire women in more ways than one. The core principle of these retreats was founded on the notion by Brené Brown [a New York Times bestselling author] that we all want to be seen, heard, and valued. The experiences are created to celebrate each woman and her unique skills and to give her permission to shine on her own terms.

Q

What are your favorite spots around Vinings/Smyrna?

KA: Goodness Grocery and Nam Dae Mun Farmers Market are my go-to stores for nutritious kitchen staples. Family Healthcare of Smyrna PC, helps me and my hubby, Kingsley, stay well, while Avril Beckford, M.D., of the WellStar Medical Group has kept our boys, Weyimi, 16, and Timeyin, 13, healthy and strong. And I’ve been going to the Vinings location of Surgarcoat nail salon since it opened! kwavi.com

DECEMBER 2019 – FEBRUARY 2020

KA: When I first started my company in 2014, I began as a weight loss and life coach. I heard a lot of women say that they couldn’t lose weight once they hit their 40s and I knew that wasn’t true. I wanted to help women thrive and to change the old narrative that we can’t lose weight in midlife.

The Scalise Sisters STUDENTS • PHILANTHROPISTS

• CHANGE-MAKERS

By Ginger C. Strejcek

Most girls go through a lot during adolescence. Samantha, Lauren and Emilie Scalise are no exception. When their mother, Stephanie, was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer in 2015, the Smyrna-based sisters— then, ages 11, 13 and 15—were crushed. But they rebounded in a big way after her recovery, teaming up to launch Strides for Survivors, a 2.7-mile benefit walk for TurningPoint Breast Cancer Rehabilitation. To date, the event has raised $26,000 and nabbed a finalist spot at this year’s Nonprofit Trinity Awards, honoring volunteerism in the local area. The fourth annual walk is set for Feb. 1, 2020.

THE THREE OF US HAVE GOTTEN MUCH CLOSER AS A RESULT OF THE WALK. INSTEAD OF STAYING IN OUR HEADS, WE HAVE OPENED UP TO EACH OTHER AND SUPPORTED EACH OTHER. —LAUREN SCALISE

“TurningPoint helped my mom with her physical pain, but it was also a support system for my whole family during the emotional pain,” says Samantha, a 19-year-old sophomore at The University of Tennessee. “Knowing that we are helping other families have this same experience means the world to me.” The philanthropic endeavor has strengthened their sisterhood as well, says Lauren, a 17-year-old senior at The Galloway School. “The three of us have gotten much closer as a result of the walk. Instead of staying in our heads, we have opened up to each other and supported each other.” They have every intention of continuing Strides for Survivors, which hits full gear in January, with Lauren handling graphics, Emilie fielding raffle items, and Samantha and Stephanie taking care of the paperwork. Meanwhile, when they get a little downtime, they can be found around town at Paces & Vine, Rev Coffee Roasters, and on Chattahoochee River hiking trails. stridesforsurvivors.org

“We just needed something to show how grateful we were and still are for the health of our mom, so we took something that she loved to do and made it into a way to give back to those who gave her the opportunity to do so,” says youngest sister Emilie, a 10th-grader at The Galloway School. “We were amazed at how much of an impact we made.”

WATERPROOFING

Q

There is a strange odor in my basement and I think it might be mold. What immediate steps need to be taken to control the issue?

A

Don’t panic. Musty odors don’t always mean mold! However, basements tend to stay cooler, which causes the humidity level of the area to be higher than normal. In combination with basements having little to no air circulation, this can lead to musty odors and eventual Derek Ritchie mold growth. In most circumstances, a properly sized dehumidification unit that will clean, dry and circulate the air will eliminate the problem.

Q

I have young children and two dogs. What is the best type of flooring for my kitchen?

A

We recommend laminate or luxury vinyl plank (LVP)/ luxury vinyl tile (LVT). Both products are very durable, stain resistant and water resistant. Laminate and LVP offer the look of wood. Elisabeth Stubbs LVT mimics tile without the coldness, hardness, and grout.

Q

What are common indicators that it’s time for new masonite particle or wooden siding?

A

The most common indicators that it is time to replace your siding is swelling of your masonite particle siding (a mixture of wood fibers and other materials) and wet or dry rot on wooden Charlie Dallavalle siding. This is caused by excessive humid conditions or exposure to liquids.

Q

If my gutters are not free of debris, can my home be damaged?

A

Improperly channeled roof water that stems from clogged gutters (primarily leaves, pine needles, debris) is actually the leading cause of foundation and Tom DiGregorio and Joe Rusk waterproofing issues in homes. If not addressed, these issues can worsen over time, resulting in far more serious and expensive repairs.

Q

What are three tips for window replacement shopping?

A

First, if you’re looking for fine craftsmanship and quality windows, the lowest quote is not necessarily the best option. So do not choose a contractor based on price alone. Second, communication is important. You know you have hired a good contractor when they Peter Morrison are responsive, listen to your questions and explain the process clearly. Finally, consider scaling back on a project to stay within your budget—but never compromise! Poor quality vinyl windows will cost you more over time because they may need to be replaced in 10 years or less.

GARAGE DOORS

Q

What is the difference between torsion and extension springs? Which one is better?

A

Extension springs are mounted on each side of a door, stretch out when the door is closed, and work independently of one another. Torsion springs are mounted on a shaft above the door and lift the door with a smoother motion than the extension springs, making a torsion spring system the better system. Also, torsion John Nale springs have an average lifespan of 15,000 to 20,000 lifts opposed to the 5,000 to 10,000 lifts of extension springs.

Q

What are three things I can do to keep my driveway looking new through each season?

A

Though ice on the surface of your driveway can be dangerous, do not use salt. This causes spalling, where the surface crumbles. Instead, use more effective chemical ice melt like calcium chloride and magnesium chloride. Another way to maintain the look Michael Cangemi of your driveway is to pressure wash it. Last but not least, be sure to caulk cracks and joints to prevent water erosion.

HVAC

Q

What type of heating system should I get and why?

A

We recommend variable speed furnaces with variable speed compressors. A variable speed heating system controls airflow to provide better temperature and humidity control, and air distribution. Compared to a conventional single-speed furnace, a variable speed furnace uses about two-thirds less electricity. Furnaces with variable speed fans work well with other energy-efficient Bill Mashraky upgrades such as zoned heating controls and smart thermostats.
