At BrewAble Cafe, a small coffee shop located in the Alpharetta Community Center, you might think you’re just ordering a cup of joe and a blueberry crumble. But there’s much more to it
than that. You’re helping a group of adults with disabilities polish both their business and social skills.
In addition to making lattes and cappuccinos, the brewistas do everything from ringing up customers to taking inventory. “A lot of my job is teaching them hard skills,” says cafe manager Isabelle Rudd, who has a younger brother on the autism spectrum. “But it’s also teaching them soft skills such as being able to socialize. A lot of people with disabilities have low self-confidence and anxiety about doing things.”

Q: How do you give back to the community? Keith Tenuto: Giving back to the community is a huge part of our company’s mission! We try to keep as many of the items that we take away from our jobs out of landfills by donating and recycling what we can. We have teamed up with some fantastic charities in and around Atlanta where we regularly drop off items to sell at their second-hand stores such as Atlanta Mission, North Fulton Community Charities, No Longer Bound and more. KT: The big thing that separates us from our competition is the extra step we take to make sure we donate first, recycle second and dump last. Making our initial splash into the market was a big challenge, we were new to the industry and had plenty of competition, but with our passion for 100% customer satisfaction and a mission to eliminate 100% of reusable waste from landfills, we’ve climbed up the ranks to be people’s top choice when it comes to eco-friendly junk removal.
Q: What’s been the biggest perk of this job? KT: About a year ago, we received an old record console that was from the 1950s. This record player now sits in my office where I can play old records I have collected over the years whenever I need a creative spark!
