From the Founder A Holiday Season for Our Community As we roll into the 2021 holiday season, there are some special opportunities in our community to make a difference. Not just our neighborhood community, but our personal community of friends, family and other people who make up our inner circle. For many of us, the holidays are a flurry of activity and quite often a rinse-and-repeat of traditions that have served us well for many years. While traditions are important, it is also important to consider the times we are in and how we might approach the holidays this year with the added intention of serving those in our area who could really use the extra love and support. Our local business community needs us to shop with them and support them! I know ordering on Amazon is easy, but Amazon will be just fine. The merchants in our area need us to turn out in force both for gift-giving and festive holiday meals and celebrations. Our circle of friends, family, teachers, grocery store workers, house cleaners, postal workers, etc., are out there keeping our community working and running smoothly. Let’s be intentional about remembering all they do to go above and beyond during the holiday season. All of this neighborly love, support and giving will go a long way toward making this a happy and beautiful season for all. Wishing you a very merry holiday season,

For the countless Atlantans suffering from allergies, the trusted pros at Atlanta Allergy & Asthma can keep you from constantly having to reach for the tissues. By Jill Becker

ore than 50 million Americans suffer from allergies. Contributing to that for many Atlanta-area residents is the fact that, when compared to most major metropolitan cities, Atlanta has an unusually high percentage of area covered by tree canopy. This has earned it a reputation as “a city in a forest,” which contributes to the misery many feel each
spring when trees release their pollen. Luckily, local allergy sufferers can turn to the folks at Atlanta Allergy & Asthma to help ease their symptoms—and their minds—when it comes to the effects of what is among the top 10 leading causes of chronic illness in the U.S.
18
Dr. Patrawala is just one of the 16 board-certified allergists who, along with 10 advanced practitioners, make up the Atlanta Allergy & Asthma team trained in diagnosing and treating everything from airborne allergies and asthma to sinus disorders and immune deficiencies in both adults and children. In business for almost 50 years, Atlanta Allergy & Asthma has 17 locations across the metro Atlanta area, making it the largest allergy practice in the state. And you know those pollen counts that you see reported on the local news? They come from Atlanta Allergy & Asthma. You can even sign up for their daily email and have the pollen counts delivered straight to your inbox. Another thing that makes Atlanta Allergy & Asthma stand out is the fact that it has its own research department, which is a rarity among most practices. In fact, Atlanta Allergy & Asthma participated in the clinical trials
ATLANTA’S THREE DISTINCT POLLEN SEASONS 1. Spring: This season gets the most attention, as it’s when that layer of green pollen settles on everything. Strangely enough, those grains of pine pollen are too large to make it anything but an irritant. What’s really triggering your spring allergy symptoms are the other tree pollens, like willow, sycamore, oak, mulberry and elm. Atlanta can get bursts of tree pollens as early as February. 2. Late spring/summer: This is when grass pollens and mold spores are at their peak. 3. Fall: This is the season for weed pollens, with the major culprit this time of year being ragweed.

Staying abreast of the latest advancements in the field is paramount at Atlanta Allergy & Asthma. Dr. Patrawala, who has a background in clinical research, enjoys combining her passions of research and patient care. “Keeping up with the latest developments and therapies allows me to provide the most effective treatment plans for my patients” says Dr. Patrawala.
Controlling Allergens in Your Home Whether your allergies are mild or mind-blowing, there are things you can do around the house to help combat their effects. Here are a few suggestions from the folks at Atlanta Allergy & Asthma. • Use HEPA filters, especially in bedrooms. • Remove your shoes upon entering the house. • Avoid foam pillows. • Wash bed linens in hot water at least once a week. • Store firewood outdoors. • Wash your hands after playing with animals. • Don’t use scented sprays, candles or plug-ins.

Dayna Bolden
MOM BLOGGER • INFLUENCER • FITNESS FASHIONISTA
By Wyndi Kappes
When Dayna Bolden quit her corporate job in 2017, she cried. Uncertain of the future, the busy mom of two was excited but nervous to see how her gamble on becoming a full-time blogger and influencer would turn out. Her leap of faith has been fruitful, as four years later, she has continued to support and inspire women through her blog, books and, most recently, a lifestyle fitness brand. Outside of growing her brand, she remains intentional about setting boundaries and cultivating relationships with her children, Aria and Bryce.
Does being a blogger/influencer give you more time to spend with your family? Dayna Bolden: The amount of time you spend with your family is solely up to you and the boundaries you create. I don’t think the job you hold has a significant part to play in it unless you’re an astronaut. I leave evenings and weekends reserved for my family and spending time with loved ones. I make sure to disconnect during those times so that I can be fully present in the moment. My family and I get to continue to build beautiful memories.
As a mom in the busy world of social media, there’s surely a lot of pressure to maintain the appearance of the perfect Instagram family. What’s your advice in terms of putting the phone down and instead savoring that one-on-one time with your family? DB: Remember that you will not get these moments back. We all talk about how fast time flies and how quickly our little ones grow up, and that couldn’t be more true if you don’t spend time with them. My advice to moms is to prioritize your family just like you prioritize your business.
DB: “Zoey the Unicorn Can Do It” is my daughter Aria’s first bestselling children’s book. Aria loves to encourage her friends to believe in their passions and love themselves. She has been obsessed with reading and writing since a very young age, so I figured she would be on board to write a book, but I didn’t want her doing anything her heart wasn’t into. I believe in authenticity in everything you do, and that includes new ventures for your children. My advice to parents is to instill a personal desire for success in your children and you’ll see them do incredible things.
What’s the most challenging part of parenting for you? DB: Feeling like I’m not doing enough or spending enough time with them. I have to remind myself that I am doing the best that I can as a parent and providing the framework for a beautiful life for my children.
What are some of your favorite places in Alpharetta? DB: I love the food scene in Alpharetta! Two of my go-to spots are South City Kitchen and Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams. daynabolden.com, instagram.com/daynabolden

Cristina Kisner M O M • GLUTEN-F REE CHEF • E NTRE P RE NE UR By Alexandra McCray
In December 2019, life for Cristina Kisner was looking up. Though she had lost her investor at the last minute, with help from her husband, Sebastian, and her five daughters, she had found a way to fulfill her dream of opening her own cafe. Cristy’s Kitchen (formerly called Huh! Natural and Real Food) was open for business, and it’d been a long road to get there. Her family had overcome bankruptcy, a slew of health issues and immigrating to the United States from Peru only a few months earlier. Then, the pandemic hit, and her steadily growing customer base started to shrink. Cristina didn’t give up. To her, Cristy’s Kitchen is more than an income source; it’s also a way to make others feel good inside and out. In fact, Cristina’s culinary skills came to life when her daughters began dealing with allergic rhinitis. She started removing dairy, sugar and processed items from their diet and served them clean meals. More challenges arose, though, when diagnoses of gluten intolerance and a rare autoimmune disease came about.
THAT IS THE WISDOM OF NATURE.
WE HAVE THE POWER TO HEAL OURSELVES; WE ONLY NEED THE RIGHT FUEL. After conventional medicine failed to give her answers, Cristina did her own research. She discovered that food was the solution to their issues, and soon after changing her daughters’ diets, their symptoms disappeared. “My girls are always my inspiration, my motor and my guide. Because of them, I found a mission in the kitchen and a passion,” she says. Since then, Cristina has often turned to nutrition when modern medicine occasionally comes up short. “That is the wisdom of nature,” she says. “We have the power to heal ourselves; we only need the right fuel.” Today, her thriving cafe is a sanctuary for those with specialized diets. The story of her family’s quest to open Cristy’s Kitchen and stay in business through the pandemic was even highlighted on the Humans of New York Instagram page. As a result, more than $1 million in donations poured in to help the family with medical bills, keep the business afloat and more. The support continued as Cristina was offered a deal for her first English cookbook, which is set to debut in 2022. Cristy’s Kitchen has amassed a large social media following of its own, too, thanks to the heartfelt stories and recipes Cristina posts. In addition to preparing her cookbook, Cristina is also busy developing a line of frozen foods that can be shipped across the country. When she has a moment to spare, she enjoys spending it with family and visiting the Chattahoochee River. cristyskitchenga.com, instagram.com/cristyskitchenga

A great way to achieve curb appeal is to first choose the right gutter protection system. The
gutter needs to be large enough to handle light to heavy rains yet be stylish
enough that it will complement the exterior of the dwelling. Once again, this is best accomplished by choosing a quality product and the right company. If either one of these steps is omitted, most likely the homeowner will not be happy with the end result.

Experts Provide Solutions For Your Everyday Q FLOORING INSTALLATION
SHOWER ENCLOSURES
Q
What is the difference between site-finished and prefinished hardwood floors?
A
Site-finished hardwoods are installed raw (unfinished) and then sanded, stained and coated with polyurethane in your home. This means you are able to select the stain color and the gloss level of the floor. Prefinished hardwood floors are fully manufactured and finished in the factory. A prefinished floor offers a quicker and more convenient installation, but you have fewer choices in stain color, etc. Both types of wood flooring are available in solid and engineered wood.

Q
Do frameless glass shower doors and enclosures require special maintenance?
A
Frameless doors are designed to be maintenance-free, but it’s all about the installation. If
the doors are not measured properly or aligned correctly, then they may require adjustment down the road.
Attachments need to be appropriate for your surfaces. Make sure your supplier comes with good references and a track record you can trust.

Q
HVAC
How can water leakage in my basement or crawlspace affect other areas of my home?
A
Water leakage in a basement or a crawlspace exacerbates the moisture levels, which will work their way up into the living environment through what’s called the “stack effect” and
can ultimately create mold growth and higher utility bills. The more moisture there is, the higher the utility bills, as it costs less money to heat and cool dry air than it does moist air.

SIDING
Q
What’s your best tip for programming a thermostat to conserve energy when the weather is cooler?
A
You can easily save energy in the winter by setting the thermostat to 68 F while you’re awake and setting it lower while you’re asleep or away from home.
Q
I’ve heard siding problems can affect my roof. What should I look for?
A
When thinking about your home’s siding, kickout flashing and roofline flashing details are very important; you
should inspect them at least once a year to keep ahead of any problems with leaks or damage. If you
have fiber cement siding, make sure it is elevated off the roofline at least 1 inch to help reduce water absorption.

Changing your thermostat 7 to 10 degrees for eight hours a day can save you an estimated 10% a year. Bill Mashraky
It’s also important to consider where your thermostat is placed. Units should be out of direct sunlight and away from drafts, doors and windows, as all of these can factor into unreliable readings.
