heri Morris excels at her job by looking at things a little bit in reverse. She is president of the award-winning development firm
Morris & Fellows, which was selected by the City of Alpharetta to partner in bringing new life to the city’s historic Downtown. Cheri, though, defies the definition of a typical developer, and not just because she’s female. She explains her firm’s unusual vision for this City Center project: “It’s a backward approach—unlike where developers usually want to generate revenue out of every square inch of a property. We started with big, green open spaces, then surrounded them with restaurants and shops. We are helping Alpharetta to unpave Downtown.”

“This Downtown will give citizens a heart and a marketplace,” she says. “If you go to a great downtown, there’s a Main Street with buildings that touch each other, so stores are next-door neighbors. The City of Alpharetta created a development code to support the historical concept of downtown as a walking district—that’s when I knew they were going to get this done right. It’s a big change from traditional zoning rules that push retailers into strip centers and workers into office buildings surrounded by parking lots.” Ultimately, she says, the area will feel like a historic downtown, not a shopping center. “We don’t allow any national retailers into our spaces here. That’s completely opposite of how most developers operate. We do business only with local retailers—and only the best of the locals. We want this to feel like a charming village, with shops owned by people you know.” That approach means profits will stay in the community. The resulting 26-acre Downtown revitalization encompasses new restaurants (one of the first to open is Restaurant Holmes), shops with luxury apartments above them, an arts center, offices and single-family homes. The “Alpha Loop” will connect many of the city’s most popular attractions—much like Atlanta’s BeltLine does—with Alpharetta’s Downtown as its nexus. “I’m very impressed with Downtown Alpharetta,” Cheri enthuses. “I can host terrific business lunches at South Main Kitchen or Butcher & Brew and can walk around the corner to wonderful little shops like Sis & Moon’s and La Bella Maison. There’s a very strong community here, people with affection and respect for each other.” And she hopes her nontraditional approach to revitalization will be to the benefit of them all. ore than 3,000 children in the metro Atlanta area are homeless on any given night. The next day, they head off to school, often in worn
hand-me-downs and without the supplies and tools they need to succeed. It’s a situation familiar to Mathew Moore. His father left when he was young and his mother struggled with alcoholism. “I kind of bounced back and forth between a lot of friends’ houses, staying with different families,” Mathew recalls.

This notion, along with a passion for health and fitness, prompted Mathew and his wife, Lisa, to develop the sustainable, ‘buy one, give one’ active clothing brand, Moshyn. “For every article of clothing you buy from us, a full gym outfit is provided to a child in need,” Mathew explains.

Moshyn partners with the Children’s Restoration Network (CRN), which serves homeless children in Atlanta. “They provide everything from academic assistance to preparation for college to tutoring to food drives,” Mathew says. This past Christmas, Moshyn participated in CRN’s Adopt a Shelter program, where schools and businesses can host a party and hand out gifts at one of the homeless shelters that CRN partners with. Being Moshyn, they went beyond the party and presents under the Christmas tree. They took the kids bowling. “They asked me questions about nutrition and how to be fit,” says Lisa, a yoga instructor working on her yoga health coach certification. “It was wonderful to have those conversations and to be able to help educate these children.” Lisa and Mathew are looking to add a health and wellness education element (think yoga classes) to Moshyn’s outreach program in 2019. And recently, Moshyn was licensed to sell Greek apparel to sororities and fraternities. “They can now buy their apparel for parties and philanthropic events,” Mathew says. “Our graphic artist will also create unique artwork for the Greek shirts.” The Moores also practice what they preach.
