Dear Buckhead Neighbors, I’ve been playing basketball since I was in high school. I remember coach Robert Hamilton welcoming me to the team and challenging me at our practices. He’d say, “Laurie! You can’t eat fast food and expect to move quickly up and down the court!” Of course, I’d mumble under my breath, “My name is not Laurie. It’s Laura. And I really like McDonald’s cheeseburgers!”

The Jarrell Family SPORTS LOVERS • VOLUNTEERS • ADVOCATES By Katherine Sauceda
After Diane and Phillip Jarrell’s oldest daughter, Katie, 14, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, they felt compelled to be advocates for Children Helping Children (CHC), an organization that connects youth with nonprofits. Along with CHC, the Buckhead family dedicates their time to volunteering with JDRF (formerly known as Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation), and Camp Kudzu, an independent nonprofit focused on serving children and teens with Type 1 diabetes.
Q: How did your family get involved with CHC?
(BACK ROW, L TO R): ELLIE, PH DIANE JARRELL; (FR ILLIP JARRELL, KATIE, ONT ROW): TREY
Diane Jarrell: I have known Michelle Hodgson, the founder, since college. When she first started CHC in 2008, my son, Trey, wasn’t even born! Katie was 3 and my other daughter, Ellie, was around 2 when we stuffed the original Be Well Bears [with art therapy supplies for children in hospitals]. Now, Katie is on the CHC Junior Board of Directors!
Q: How has CHC benefited your family? DJ: It has given the kids an opportunity to see how they can give back to the community in an environment that makes it safe and easy. Katie told Michelle she wanted to find out what she could do to help others aside from fundraising. So Michelle started asking Katie questions and Katie began thinking of ideas and the things other kids with Type 1 diabetes struggle with like the patches that keep a pump site secure. It’s such a bummer for a kid to not be able to go swimming all summer because their parents aren’t aware of the patches that can keep a pump site secure in the water. So, Katie is finding creative ways to increase awareness.
Q: What has working with CHC taught you about your family?
Q: What are some of your favorite places to go as a family in Buckhead? DJ: We are very active. Trey plays football with Northside Youth Organization. Katie and Ellie both play tennis with the Atlanta Lawn Tennis Association. On our way home from games, we often stop at Chido + Padre’s, Superica, or PURE taqueria®. chcatlanta.org

DJ: Our kids are more capable of giving than we know. It is amazing to watch my daughters’ minds think of new ways to help others. Michelle is a bridge to different organizations that can help our kids realize giving back is as simple as going out and collecting things that your friends have outgrown, which in turn, make for ideal donation items.

Gabriel Pica NIGHTLIFE NOTABLE • WORLD EXPLORER • DOG DAD By Barbra Buoy
Gabriel Pica is proof that partying in college can actually pay off. “I’ve always enjoyed the nightlife,” says Gabriel, nightlife director at Big Sky Buckhead Bar & Restaurant. As an economics student at the University of Georgia, he spent his undergraduate years checking IDs, bartending, and managing local bars. Two years ago, he moved to Buckhead to work at Big Sky. Juan Calle and Adam Berlin, both of whom grew up in the area, opened Big Sky Buckhead, winner of the 2019 Sports Bar of the Year award by Nightclub & Bar Media Group, in 2014. The bar is famous for hosting broadcasts of major college football games like the SEC Championship and international events like Copa América and the World Cup. “Our through-the-door counts are anywhere from 2,000 to 6,000 people per day during big events,” Gabriel says.
WE DID A REMODEL JUST OVER A YEAR AGO. WE WANTED TO GO MORE UPSCALE, YET STILL CATER TO OUR CORE SPORTS FANS. —GABRIEL PICA
To complement its food offerings, Big Sky Buckhead has a full cocktail program. Resident mixologist, Bijan Montezari, captivates guests with concoctions like the Lady in Red, which features Ketel One vodka infused with hibiscus tea. However, the restaurant’s most popular drink is The CBD Green Fairy, an absinthe-based cocktail topped with five drops of CBD (an active ingredient in cannabis) tincture, which was released earlier this year. When he’s not at work, Gabriel prioritizes quality time with his girl. “I spend at least an hour most days at Charlie Loudermilk Park with my 6-year-old boxer/pug mix, Lana,” Gabriel says. And once Lana’s been walked, you can find Gabriel hanging out with friends at The Painted Pin or at Tongue & Groove. But Buckhead isn’t the only place you’ll find him. “I also love scuba diving, skydiving, and traveling. So far, I’ve checked Italy, Germany, Austria, Colombia, Mexico, Belize, and Nevis in the West Indies off my list.” bigskybuckhead.com

Over time, Big Sky Buckhead reinvented itself to mirror the colossal shifts in the neighborhood. “We did a remodel just over a year ago,” Gabriel explains. “We wanted to go more upscale, yet still cater to our core sports fans.” In addition to the new western-chic décor, Big Sky Buckhead has a menu that rotates quarterly. Even the obligatory sports bar wings have been gussied up with Goose Island IPA BBQ sauce.

Inspiring Coaches of Buckhead Standout Mentors Guide Players to Reach Their Goals By Alex Patton

eing a coach is a rare opportunity to get to know athletes at their best and their worst, and to be their support system through their sweetest victories and hardest trials. Although they know that not everyone on their team will go on to break records or play professionally, coaches believe that
dedicated participation in sports leads to a more well-rounded lifestyle and a strong sense of personal confidence.

Growing up surrounded by basketball players, Katie Johnson desired to play a sport no one else in her family played. In high school, Johnson fell in love with volleyball. Fast forward to becoming a head coach, she has taken the varsity volleyball team at The Lovett School to the state semifinals for the past three years. “I spend a lot of time with these players,” she says. “They use my office as their breathing ground. When they need a break or are having a bad day, you can find them in my office. Between texts, practice, and advising, I spend up to 50 hours with them each week,”Johnson says. Adding, “When I first started at Lovett, one player asked me about my expectations. After our talk, she took it to heart and became one of the best leaders that I’ve worked with. She led by example—working to be first in every sprint and competing to earn a starting role.” And now, Johnson says, “Even though she has graduated, she still comes and works with me in the off-season and we visit when she comes to town on college breaks.”

Kasia Kaufman The Westminster Schools Varsity Crew Head Coach Until she found rowing, nearly every sport Kasia Kaufman tried wasn’t the right fit. When she joined a crew team her freshman year of high school, it was the first time Kaufman truly felt she belonged somewhere. Being 5 feet, 2 inches tall and about 90 pounds made her ideal for the coxswain position of a rowing crew, responsible for steering and coordinating the rhythm of the rowing action.

Now, he is proud to coach his son’s teams on the same fields he grew up on. “The best part about coaching
young kids is that I get to watch them grow to become confident players when they know they can
hit the ball or throw a straight pitch,” Robinson says. Parents notice this improvement on and off the field too. John Richardson definitely has. “Ronnie has elevated greatly all the mechanics of Whit’s game, but more importantly, Ronnie has influenced Whit’s character. Whit now pursues excellence and knows what it means to be a part of a team,” says John Richardson, Whit’s dad.

Amanda Fielder Sutton Middle School Athletic Director For over 10 years, Amanda Fielder has helped kids hit home runs and score the winning basket as a softball and basketball coach. Now, as athletic director for Sutton Middle School, which has over 20 sports, Fielder is responsible for maintaining logistics, scheduling, and communication for the entire program.
“Competing for your school creates a sense of belonging and achievement as part of a team,” Fielder says. For example, her former student, Maggie, grew tremendously during her three years at Sutton. “Not only did she develop into a highly-skilled volleyball player, but she also honed her leadership skills,” she says. Adding, “Maggie made it a point to take younger players under her wing and always radiated positivity and school spirit on and off the court. It wasn’t unusual to hear her encouraging her classmates to come to games and support not only her team, but other teams as well.”

WINDOW COVERINGS
Q
What are the best options for letting in plenty of light but still maintaining privacy?
A
We have a large variety of window treatments that maximize light while minimizing visibility from the outdoors into your home. Our plantation shutters are a popular choice because you can easily tilt the louvers to certain angles Andrea and Sean Zare allowing light to stream through. We can also add a center divider that allows you to close the bottom portion of the shutters for privacy and keep the top portion open for light.

Gray tones seem to be most popular at the moment but we can mix and match paint hues to suit your personal style. We have color consultants and designers and supply sample quarts to help in your paint selections. We always put up samples for owners to view before painting a Charlie Dallavalle whole home. People are adding more and more edible areas to their landscape, investing in blueberry bushes and kitchen gardens where they can grow things like lettuce, parsley, and kale. We are also seeing a lot of people incorporating tomatoes, cucumbers, ornamental peppers and more into their perennial gardens Evan Rogers and Pete Wilkerson so they can enjoy the harvest and the visual appeal. Have a smaller space? Consider starting a potted herb garden with rosemary and parsley on your back porch or patio.

What are the best flooring options for kids and pets?
Flooring types that are durable and stain resistant like laminates and luxury vinyl are quite popular because they are easy to take care of. Tile is very practical but Atlanta homeowners generally gravitate toward the warm feeling of a faux wood that has the appearance of wood. If you want real wood choose a floor with a lot of character so you don’t have to stress when life happens and Elisabeth Stubbs you get inevitable dings and scratches.

CONCRETE
Q A
What causes uneven concrete and cracks?
Most uneven and cracking concrete is caused by settlement. Settlement is due to one of three things: poorly compacted soil, erosion or decay. Prior to pouring, concrete preparation is extremely important for its longevity. Topsoil, clay and loose fill should be removed and a good base material should be installed and, most importantly, compacted. Erosion occurs when water is Michael Cangemi not properly managed around the concrete and decay oftentimes is the result of something organic under the concrete that decomposes over time.

What are some of the benefits of installing a metal roof?
A
Although the initial cost of a metal roof might be higher than standard asphalt shingles, you can easily recoup your investment as this durable roof stands up to the elements and requires minimal maintenance and repairs. Metal roofs are also eco-friendly and energy efficient. Oftentimes made from recycled materials, Chad Cruce this type of roofing can save you up to 40 percent on annual energy costs. Plus, considering changing up your curb appeal? You can easily paint your metal roof to accommodate your home’s new aesthetic.

Gas tankless heaters are an environmentally friendly option as they only heat water on demand, saving energy. Plus, with these models, you can enjoy almost unlimited hot water! Traditional gas water heaters are safer and more efficient than in years past but they Jerry Hall still fall short of the performance of tankless models. Finally, hybrid electric water heaters incorporate a heat pump into the system with Wi-Fi capability and smart thermostat communication. These heaters are amazingly efficient.

Q
What are the different ways I can control my lighting system?
A
Traditional astronomical digital timers are the most popular, since they are economical. Your lights will come on at dusk and go off at whatever time you designate. We do not typically recommend Wi-Fi-enabled devices controlled via a smartphone because your lights will not come on if there is an issue with your internet. Proximity is usually an issue with Bluetooth-enabled controllers so we definitely stay away from them. If Lindsey Rodericks you want to control your landscape lights along with other exterior or interior lights from the same control point, we recommend hard-wired technology such as UPB.

WINDOW REPLACEMENT
Q
How do I know my windows need to be replaced?
A
There are several signs to look for when trying to determine if replacing your windows (and doors) should be the next project on your home improvement list. Some of these telltale signs include difficult operation, drafty windows (aka loss of energy efficiency), condensation between the glass panes, and water stains, chipping or deterioration on or around the window. Peter Morrison Even if you don’t notice all of these signs, replacement can still be a great choice if your home needs a makeover or you want to reduce your energy bill.

Q
How can a new thermostat help make my home more energy efficient?
A
Many Programmable Thermostats can be set to turn off when no one is home or to adjust the temperature to use less energy when residents are away. A Wi-Fi thermostat can also be adjusted from a distance when schedules change. Installing sophisticated high-tech thermostats like Lennox i-comfort S30 can automatically change over switches between heating and cooling depending on indoor temperatures. The smart away mode on the Bill Mashraky Lennox i-comfort S30 works with devices such as Amazon Alexa.
Q
Why is it important to have my crawl space inspected for water damage? What can be done if I notice a leak?
A
Cool Air Mechanical
A water leak in your basement can easily lead to mold growth, which can cause health problems. The water can also deteriorate the wood by dryrotting the framing, which also attracts termites to the softer wood. The dry rot can lead to shifting of the frame resulting in door Derek Ritchie functionality problems and cracking of walls. The moment you suspect a leak, call a professional basement, crawl space and encapsulation company to get ahead of these problems.

What Does “Concierge Medicine” Mean to Me As a Patient? By Paul E. Cox, MD, MS
Concierge medicine is a type of medical practice that offers an enhanced physician-patient relationship resulting in improved accessibility to medical information, treatment, and quality care.
I also have skilled estheticians who offer facials, laser, intense pulsated light (IPL), and radio-frequency microneedling treatments to keep you looking as good as you feel.
Why would I choose this type of practice? I have great medical insurance.
I have heard a lot about hormones lately. Are they really that important?
Primary care doctors that rely only on insurance or Medicare payments must see an average of four patients per hour or use physician extenders such as nurse practitioners or physician assistants in order to produce the revenue needed to keep the practice open. Therefore the patient [you] is no longer the primary concern of the practice. The payment system is the primary driving force behind this type of practice model.
How is the concierge model different?
The concierge model allows you to make a personal contribution to your health (usually less than the cost of three or four monthly car payments) that results in a more personal relationship with your physician. In this model, the physician-patient relationship again becomes the driver of medicine instead of insurance payments.
How is Vital Living Healthcare different from other concierge practices?
We are the only place in Atlanta where you can receive your annual physical and a facial in the same facility on the same day. We also provide you with a yearly blueprint/design for improved health based upon what you want to accomplish, what the available data (from advanced laboratory testing) tells us, and the time you have to devote to the plan. We also periodically revisit and revise the plan to make sure we take advantage of victories, while pivoting when circumstances change.
What services do you offer?
In addition to the personalized health blueprint/design, I am also well known for my skills with BOTOX® and fillers, and bioidentical hormone optimization.
Yes! There is sound scientific evidence that shows hormones greatly affect our mood, thoughts, sleep, energy levels, weight, lean muscle mass and athletic performance, and how we look. Hormone imbalance or deficiency commonly begins in our 40s and 50s and is frequently dismissed by most physicians as normal aging, depression or anxiety. So before you start that antidepressant, give up on your workouts, start the anxiety medication or give in to the ‘personal summer’ of hot flashes and night sweats, please get your hormones checked by me. There is a reason I am known as Atlanta’s ‘hormone whisperer.’
Is there anything else I need to know?
My practice is founded on the principles of listening, caring, and serving. My team will always strive to do those things for you no matter what. That’s why your first meeting with me is complimentary. I need to listen to make sure my practice can meet your needs to provide truly personalized medical care. Board certified in anti-aging and family medicine, Paul E. Cox, MD, MS, is an expert at turning back time. Firmly rooted in a scientific approach, Vital Living Healthcare focuses on early detection, prevention, and innovative treatments to reverse agerelated decline. By using state-of-the-art equipment and techniques, along with focusing on all aspects of your health (mind, body, spirit, and surroundings), Dr. Cox will create a comprehensive and personalized design for maintaining or reclaiming your health and vitality. Experience the healthcare you deserve and schedule your complimentary consultation with Dr. Cox today.
