Children Helping Children was started by Michelle over 15 years ago to help educate and empower kids and teens to give back to others. Since then, Atlanta’s youngest volunteers have made a big impact across Atlanta.

Children Helping Children recently partnered with fellow nonprofit Gigi’s Playhouse to host a special Coffee Shop event. Young adults from Gigi’s volunteered their morning to serve customers coffee, snacks and swag to benefit their new playhouse expansion! If you are struggling with the stresses of motherhood, Meredith Pope wants you to know you aren’t alone.

In her mid-30s, the new mom was grappling with postpartum depression, her children’s dyslexia diagnoses and other medical issues, and the pressure of “perfect parenting.” She felt like she had lost herself in it all. But thanks to her supportive community and the power of setting boundaries, the now 50-year-old former Mrs. USA Earth titleholder has not only rediscovered herself, but also her passion for helping others navigate the challenges of parenting through her blog at meredithpope.net.

Q: What do you consider your biggest accomplishment?

Meredith Pope: Being brave enough to reach out for help and overcome my postpartum depression and anxiety is something I am very proud of. I cringe to think what would have become of my family if I hadn’t. Today, I am living my best life and accomplishing my life’s dreams all because I admitted I needed help. Please never be too prideful to ask for help if you are struggling emotionally.

Q: What do you think has contributed to your success in life?

Meredith Pope: Growing up with dyslexia has proven to present many challenges for me, but my determination to overcome it and prove those who didn’t believe in me wrong has stayed with me. Dyslexia is a gift, and once you learn how to learn, anything is possible. I plan to spend the rest of my life shouting that from the rooftops and helping as many children as I can feel as powerful as I do right now.

Q: What are some of the ways you give back to the community?

Meredith Pope: I spend my time advocating for children with dyslexia by partnering with Decoding Dyslexia of Georgia and the Atlanta Speech School. I was privileged to have a role in the passing of Senate Bill 48, which mandates that all pre-kindergarten students in Georgia have to be screened for dyslexia. My second love is for the Earth. I used my talents as a former teacher and my love of writing to create my bestselling children’s book, “I Am NOT Trash,” which teaches children to respect and value our planet from an early age by reducing and reusing plastics. This book has a deeper meaning than just recycling; it shows how we all have a purpose on this earth and deserve to find that purpose.

Q: What do you love most about Buckhead?

Meredith Pope: I love all that Buckhead has to offer, but some of my favorite places include the Shops of Buckhead, St. Regis Atlanta, Memorial Park, Hal’s “The Steakhouse” and Cherokee Town and Country Club. my

Troy Wells’ Tropical Haven

Every morning begins a daily grounding ritual for homeowners Troy Wells and Tom Sullivan. Barefoot, Wells says, they step out into a dew-covered yard to listen as butterflies warm their wings and watch hungry honeybees collect nectar. Palm fronds and banana leaves dance in the breeze and birds welcome the day with their melodies. By noon, the two have happily lost track of time hoping a dragonfly might land on their fingers. Then, just as evening comes, a majestic chorus of croaking frogs provides a little background music as lightning bugs light up the yard like diamonds. It reminds them that in a world filled with chaos, the feeling of peace is priceless.

“In the spring of 2022, I had a vision of this backyard paradise and in four months, it came together through a synchronized process,” said Wells, a longtime resident of Brookhaven’s Ashford Park and a top realtor at PalmerHouse Properties (where he shares his landscape design insight as often as he can). Wells’ backyard is his most recent passion project and a dream realized by the four-year cancer survivor as proof that you must live life to its fullest.

“Ricky with Atlanta Palms installed the palm trees—a must for any tropical garden—and the tranquil pond was constructed by John with Universal Aquatics,” Wells said. “Implementation was a lot of work. But it was worth it, and it all reminds us that together with nature we all have purpose and without the creatures of nature, we would exist no more.”

The babble of waterfalls, a visual collage of vibrant tropical foliage, the sweet, sensuous smell of Hawaiian ginger blossoms and the warm sun on their faces—to Wells, these are now gifts for the senses that he and Sullivan can enjoy every single day.
