my Buckhead
From the Editor We’re kicking off 2018 with a special section dedicated to our favorite pets! I’m gung ho about this because I’ve been a dog lover for years. And although my boxer, Miles, is no longer physically with me, he lives on in my heart forever. That’s why I couldn’t get enough of our feature on People & Their Pets (p. 33). Each pet owner submitted a photo of their beloved bestie with a brief description about what makes their baby stand out. I promise, you’re going to love each write-up. If your dog, cat, or bird didn’t make it into this issue, show us a photo of you with them by tagging @MyBuckhead on Facebook. We want to know what makes them so special to you. And since February is the month of love, give some extra special love to my friend Ashley Stamoulis, the owner of the lifestyle brand and blog, Suthingirl.com. Her Suthinstyle subscription box offers a curated selection of goodies for that special someone in your life. Turn to page 9 to find out more. You’ll also want to show yourself some love by booking an appointment with my mobile manicurist, Alyce Keys of Keys to Beauty. Her attention to detail and perfect pedicure will win your heart (p. 13).
WINTER 2018
Want to see your favorite business or professional in the magazine? Be sure to nominate the establishment or person for the debut of our 2018 My Buckhead Community Choice Awards. Starting now through Feb. 22, go to AtlantaBestMedia.com to nominate in one or more categories. It’s your chance to show your support for your Buckhead favorites. Top vote-getters will be highlighted in our spring issue, which hits the streets in May. Follow us on Facebook (Facebook.com/MyBuckhead) or sign up to receive contest updates at: MyBuckhead@AtlantaBestMedia.com. Till Next Time,

ABOUT OUR EXPERT
(Not)Missing the Cut By Jennifer Colosimo
It’s not the most talked about subject around the water cooler … but it’s on more people’s minds than you would think. In fact, according to The American Cancer Society, prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer among men, after skin cancer. The good news has always been that it can be treated successfully in most cases; but gather round for a new conversation, boys, because now the news is even better. VAHAN KASSABIAN, MD, FACS, FRCS(C) Medical Director of Georgia Urology in partnership with Vituro Health
Dr. Vahan Kassabian, Medical Director of Georgia Urology in partnership with Vituro Health, is the first and only surgeon in the state of Georgia to introduce the revolutionary HIFU procedure to treat prostate cancer. Originally from Canada, where the procedure has been approved for many years, he’s been successfully treating men with prostate cancer for over a decade. Now that the FDA has approved the procedure in the U.S., he brings his niche expertise to our community. The acronym stands for high intensity focused ultrasound, something Kassabian describes using the analogy of a harmonic scalpel. The result is a truly minimally invasive, outpatient procedure without the side effects or downtime associated with radiation or the general risks of surgery.
“With HIFU, I am killing as much or as little of the prostate cancer, or prostate gland, as I want, using heat,” said Kassabian. “People go home the same day. They don’t even need to take pain medication. They have a catheter for about 10 days, but they’re feeling great without any of the discomfort or pain associated with surgery.” To say it’s labor intensive – which Kassabian does – is an understatement. The surgery takes anywhere from two to three hours and uses an impossibly tiny (3mm, to be exact-think a grain of uncooked rice) ultrasound beam. “There’s a very steep learning curve involved with this procedure,” he said. “But I can avoid damaging surrounding tissue, such as the nerves responsible for erections. As I am treating, I’m looking at it, I’m getting a lot of technological feedback, seeing heat changes, visual changes and more, all in real time.” Whereas traditional treatment options are surgery to remove the entire prostate gland or radiation to radiate the entire gland, HIFU allows a surgeon more control over how much tissue gets destroyed. Physicians direct the ultrasound energy, also known as sound waves, toward the diseased prostate tissue and burn away the malignancy. As a result, they can destroy only the targeted prostate cancer cells and leave surrounding tissue unharmed. Surgery without the aftermath is reason enough to book the new surgery with Dr. Kassabian, but the benefits go beyond that. “This is truly an outpatient, minimally invasive procedure,” he reiterated. “But the biggest difference is a very low effect on sexual function.” According to Kassabian, one year after the procedure, 90 percent of the men he has treated are still sexually able to function – something not guaranteed with traditional surgery to remove prostate cancer. This new procedure also helps patients avoid complications with urinary function and the short and long term effects of radiation. In turn, it helps patients avoid secondary malignancies, often caused by treatment with radiation. In that sense, it’s also much more in line for people who are taking a holistic approach. “I am using sound waves to create heat,” Kassabian said. “That’s about as natural as one can get.”

ove is in the air at Single Atlanta Matchmakers. The successful concierge matchmaking firm is celebrating its 20th anniversary and it’s easy to see why. Lisa Lyngos and Leisha Murphy, the dynamic duo behind the brand, bring a level of expertise that sets them apart. The two double-handedly have changed the Atlanta dating landscape. Bringing their warm personalities, sense of humor, relatability, and wisdom to the table, Atlantans have come to know and trust these two whole-heartedly.
[
With a service that has stood the test of time—Lisa and Leisha have encountered every scenario—the identical twin sisters know the players and can guide anyone through the intimidating dating process. Now having reached this commemorative milestone with more work to do, they are looking toward the future.

Born in Michigan, the twins relocated to Texas as young girls and both graduated from Baylor University. “We grew up with both regional influences strongly felt and that plays a part in our success,” Leisha notes. Adding, “We were raised with that traditional Midwestern work ethic and also felt the Texas attitude, which says, ‘Kick a hole through the sky, anything is possible!’” In 1998, when a job moved Leisha’s husband to Atlanta, she became aware of the growing need for a local matchmaking service. “Atlanta’s biggest boom period had begun with the 1996 Olympics,”

1/23/18 2:53 PM
Consummate professionals, Lisa and Leisha have become industry leaders in the past two decades, creating the largest matchmaking business in the Southeast with over 19,000 clients. “We have so much fun,” Lisa laughs. “This is what we love, and we’ve put together a great staff who have been with us for more than 10 years. They all have three things—a big brain, a big heart, and a big sense of humor.” Leisha continues, “We are both very intuitive and we’ve surrounded ourselves with people who also have a compassionate nature.” “Everyone is looking for a happy committed relationship. We are the land of second chances for many of our clients. Thousands of couples are together today, who would have never met without us,” Lisa says. “Our clients range in age from their mid-20s up to their 80s. They tell us their stories and together we are able to build a profile of the type of person they would like to meet. This is where our experience really counts. ... We know precisely how to successfully guide them through the process.” Single Atlanta Matchmakers commits to building a trusting relationship with each client, conducting phone interviews, followed by face-to-face consultations assessing their needs. After that, they start sending the clients out on dates, one match at a time, with full feedback from both parties after each meetup. “Our amazing track record of matching couples who end up in long-term relationships and/or marriage is not an accident,” Leisha reveals. Over the last 20 years, we have created an environment that has changed people’s experience with dating in our city for the better. That is our legacy.” SingleAtlanta.com, 750 Hammond Dr. NE., Bldg. 16, Ste. 200, 404-250-9292. The content for this article is brought to you by Level 2 Introductions.

Get Past the Swipe Hype
Fake profiles, scams, catfishing, staged social media, and scrolling through apps— modern dating may be high tech, but not necessarily high quality. The old-fashioned way might be the most effective. The Single Atlanta Matchmakers team focuses on clients who want true romantic companionship for the long haul, and who are ready to invest targeted energy into the process of finding a mate. Matchmakers Lisa Lyngos and Leisha Murphy bring experience and confidence to the table for their clients. Their service far surpasses anything possible online. “The dating pools are filled with people that aren’t serious, and online dating rapidly exposed itself and its dangers,” says Leisha. “We offer something real, no worries about the caliber of people you’ll meet.” Lisa agrees, “We see that the internet presents the good, the bad, and the ugly. We’re far above that. Why try to find a needle in a haystack? We have the needles here!”

Leisha explains. “The city had suddenly exploded with people from all over and they didn’t know how to meet each other.” Soon, Lisa came onboard, heading to Atlanta, and the two of them immediately saw the advantage of building the business as a team.

William Givens has packed a lot of life into his relatively few years. His meteoric rise to the position of senior pastor at Buckhead Baptist Church at just 31 is a testament to his energy and enthusiasm for bringing out the best in people. His daily duties include everything from crisis counseling and mentoring to providing sermon content and much more. Raised by a hardworking mother who held a variety of jobs (factory worker, school bus driver) in rural Georgia, William grew up in a home filled with love—but not much else. He was a self-described “go-getter,” though, and left his impoverished upbringing behind to enroll at Shorter University. His outgoing personality caught the attention of a religious studies professor there, who invited him to study abroad. “I thought I’d known poverty before that trip,” he recounts. “But, man, I’d never experienced anything like the suffering I saw in Burma. Other Christian students were there with me. We talked about returning to give out packets of toothpaste and deodorant. So when I went back to Shorter, I changed my major to religious studies. I wanted to really help.”
[
“BUCKHEAD BAPTIST CHURCH IS HISTORICALLY ALL-WHITE ... AND I’M NOT,” HE LAUGHS. “BUT
WE CAN COME
TOGETHER UNDER THE BANNER OF LOVE.”
[
“One day in Iraq, a mortar hit three people—we were told they wouldn’t make it. I got together with another soldier and we prayed. For the first time, I had a sense of purpose. Weeks later, we got word that the soldiers who’d been hit had recovered. It was weird—ever since we’d arrived in the desert, we’d never seen a cloud in the sky. But we went outside that day and there were clouds. Grown men were gazing up in wonder and seeing clouds. I had a new resolve that day— God was telling me that He cannot disappoint.” William served as chapel pastor there, preaching and leading bible studies for the next six months. Now, he uses the compassion he developed overseas to guide him in his career. It’s clear why, in just three years’ time, and now at 34, he continues to hold the position of senior pastor. “Buckhead Baptist Church is historically all-white ... and I’m not,” he laughs. “But we can come together under the banner of love.” He and his wife, Gloria, have four children and like to spend time in Buckhead eating breakfast at Egg Harbor Café. And for his favorite dinner spot? He goes to Superica for its 20-ounce bone-in rib eye. BuckheadBaptist.org

A year later, he got a call that changed his life. He’d joined the National Guard and, out of the blue, he received orders to head to Iraq. He chuckles about how forlorn he felt at the time, “All my life, I’d heard people say, ‘God has a plan.’ And I thought, ‘Well, if God has a plan in Iraq, why doesn’t He send you?’”

Wow, she looks even better in person!
As a parent, you are constantly giving… your time, your attention, and your energy to your children. It’s perfectly normal to feel exhausted and drained from all the giving. Unexpected school closures places more demands you, and unstimulated children may act out or display inappropriate attention-seeking behavior. Here are a few tips for maintaining a calm home and keeping your sanity:
So how many cats do you have?
❑ Remember to take time for yourself: Read a book, go on a walk, or color. ❑ Provide opportunities for downtime while still maintaining structure: Incorporate structured activities into each day and write the day’s events on the refrigerator.
I bet he’s good with kids.

❑ Reward positive behavior: Children thrive on positive reinforcement and display positive behaviors more frequently when it is acknowledged with a sticker, hug, or simple “good job.” ❑ Stimulate their minds: Print off coloring sheets of their favorite characters, create scavenger hunts around the house, or encourage them to create a story with a handful of objects that you give them.

Rosie Davidson BOARD MEMBER • MASTER GARDENER By Stacy Moser
Almost two million people a year visit Chastain Park, Atlanta’s largest park, for a round of golf, a walk around its perimeter, a game of tennis or just to enjoy the view from one of its many benches. But if you look closely as you walk along the west side of the park, you’ll see a little sign pointing the way to Farm Chastain. Follow that path to the barn where the Chastain Park Conservancy is located. Nearby, Farm Chastain, which is surrounded by raised beds, a greenhouse, beehives, and a goat named Chuck, is where you’ll find Rosie Davidson’s domain. “This farm is my baby,” she says. “Everyone who comes here is amazed by it!” Five years ago, Rosie, a master gardener and Chastain Park Conservancy board member who emigrated here from England, undertook the daunting task of creating an organic urban teaching farm, right in the heart of Buckhead. “People come from all over to take classes here—we teach about how to grow and use herbs, container gardening, composting, even how to grow healthy food for tailgating!”
[
[
TAKE CLASSES HERE.”
Rosie, whose infectious enthusiasm for gardening is clearly a factor in the farm’s success, says she loves meeting new people as part of her work there. “I don’t want people to be intimidated by gardening,” she says. “Some people go on garden tours of great big houses and they become overwhelmed. But here, we teach people to take it one step at a time. I love to see people walk away from here with a smile on their face. I love teaching kids who’ve never eaten veggies off the vine.”
She grows serious when she talks about her bout with breast cancer (she’s five years a survivor) and her husband’s prostate cancer scare (he was diagnosed 17 years ago). “I lost interest in everything when I was going through treatment,” she remembers. “I felt miserable. Then it all came back to me. You get out there and get your hands dirty—it’s therapeutic.” The farm has partnered with Piedmont Hospital’s Thomas F. Chapman Family Cancer Wellness program to offer classes emphasizing healthy eating. “Those classes are close to my heart. You have to watch what you put in your body and take care of yourself.” The farm also hosts a monthly Fulton Fresh 4-H club meeting where kids can learn about nutrition and more. After a day’s work, Rosie says she and her husband love a date night at Bones on Piedmont Road. Adding, “Anis Café & Bistro is great, too. The food is incredible.” ChastainParkConservancy.org
