Dear East Cobb Neighbors, I’m just not sure where the time goes but it’s flying by. I joined the Atlanta Best Media team a little over 2 years ago and it’s been a whirlwind ever since. The team here has been busy producing eight of Atlanta’s top lifestyle magazines, which include our flagships, My Home Improvement (formerly Atlanta Home Improvement) and Best Self Atlanta. We also have six hyperlocal publications underneath our ever-growing umbrella— My East Cobb, My Alpharetta, My Intown, My Buckhead, My Sandy Springs, and My Vinings/Smyrna. Each My Neighborhood magazine is community driven and area-specific. You will find key advice provided by home service pros regarding everything from lighting and roofing to flooring and foundation repair beginning on page 26. You will also find our three-month calendar of events is filled with fun happenings my Calendar of Events for you and your family to enjoy.

1

SELECTING FLOORING PRODUCT WITHOUT CONSIDERING YOUR NEEDS AND LIFESTYLE There is no universal “one size fits all” flooring choice. Remember to factor in components such as traffic, pets, kids, etc. Take the time to determine which product will best meet your lifestyle, budget, desired appearance, and maintenance. Our consultants can introduce you to products you have not considered or did not know existed.

2

NOT UNDERSTANDING WHAT YOU ARE BUYING With hundreds of different products to choose from, choosing new flooring can be a daunting task. We help you to get the best quality product for your budget. All flooring is different. The more you know, the easier it will be to make the best choice for your home.

3

CHOOSING BASED ON A SMALL SAMPLE Deciding on the right color and shade of your new floor is very important. You want it to complement your home and décor. It is very difficult to get an accurate idea of what a color will look like based on a 2-inch sample. Whenever possible, use a larger piece of sample flooring to really see how the color will work in your home.

Nancy Whitesides CHILD ADVOCATE • DOG RESCUER • FITNESS ENTHUSIAST By Stacy Moser

As Nancy Whitesides walks her rescue pup, London, down the street in East Cobb, she reflects on the volunteer work she has undertaken since 2014, advocating for children who find themselves in Georgia’s foster-care system. Every week, Nancy visits children and their foster families to check on them, attends court hearings to report on their behalf and provides a friendly face as the kids navigate their new surroundings. “I’m honored to do it,” she says. “I have a master’s degree in counseling and thought it was a good fit for me now that my three sons are older. These foster kids—many of whom were neglected or abused—need somebody to advocate for them.”

ANYONE CAN DO THIS. WHETHER YOU’RE A YOUNG ADULT OR A SENIOR CITIZEN, THE JOB IS TO ENSURE KIDS ARE SAFE, PROTECTED, AND PLACED WITH ADULTS WHO CAN CARE FOR THEM. —NANCY WHITESIDES

Nancy says she’s met these children at school during lunch, at the park for a walk or at their home to play a game. “Anyone can do this,” she says. “Whether you’re a young adult or a senior citizen, the job is to ensure kids are safe, they’re protected, that they’re placed with adults who can care for them and consistently meet their needs.” She laughs, “I’ve gone to school concerts, graduations and dance recitals. I want that kid to look out in the audience and say, ‘Oh! That lady is here again!’” Stress management for Nancy isn’t a problem—she frequently visits CycleBar East Cobb and Sculpted Body Fitness Center for a workout on the Megaformer™. You’ll also see her at Cobb County CASA’s wine-tasting fundraiser on April 20 at the Marietta Wine Market from 2-4pm. Facebook.com/CobbCASA

“Children are traumatized when they’re put in foster care,” she explains. “They’re not just placed with strangers in a new home, they’re faced with different food, a different bed, a different school—it’s terrifying. They don’t know what the future holds. That’s why court-appointed special advocate (CASA) volunteers are so important. We’re a consistent face for them. I meet with each child at least once a month until they are placed in a permanent ‘forever’ home. There are 21,000 children in foster care this year in Georgia and over 11,000 have a CASA volunteer. But there are more than 100 children in Cobb County still waiting for one. We need volunteers!”

Will Graham JEWELRY MAKER • MASSAGE THERAPIST • MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKER By Stacy Moser

Will Graham has made it his life’s work to seek the bright side of things. As a matter of fact, the motto on his Facebook page is “Life’s not about seeking shelter from the storm, but learning how to dance in the rain.” At 8 years old, Will was diagnosed with a brain tumor, requiring a series of surgeries to save his life. In 1996, following the sixth surgery, he awoke to a total loss of vision. “My parents and I had to accept that I wasn’t going to see again,” he says. “So I got involved at Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church and decided not to worry about losing my sight because I’ll see in heaven,” he says. “I felt God gave me an opportunity.”

NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS, YOU CAN DO AMAZING THINGS. ACCEPT WHAT YOU NOW I SPEAK TO GROUPS, SAYING THAT

HAVE, MOVE ON AND TRUST GOD TO PROVIDE FOR YOU.

—WILL GRAHAM Though he spent much of his time in hospitals as a kid, he graduated from Pope High School in 2002. “I decided that if God wasn’t going to heal me physically, he would heal me spiritually,” he says. “Now I speak to groups, saying that no matter what happens, you can do amazing things. Accept what you have, move on and trust God to provide for you.”

But in 2017 he met a young special-needs teacher, Wendy Gray. “A friend, who is legally blind, and his wife took Wendy and me to dinner one night to introduce us,” he recalls fondly. “We’re married now and can say we met on a truly blind date!”

To help Will heighten his sense of touch when he first lost his sight, his mom (he refers to her as his “hero”) encouraged him to make jewelry, now a skill at which he excels, selling his pieces at her boutique in East Cobb, Signatures Gifts & Interiors. Will is also a certified massage therapist, with a list of clients who meet him at the Christian Activities Center at Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church for a relaxing chair massage. And you can find Wendy and Will at Capozzi’s Pizza sharing baked ziti on date night. For more on Will’s jewelry, call: 678-699-8780 or visit: SignaturesEastCobb.com.

Elisabeth Stubbs FLOORING EXPERT • PET RESCUE MENTOR • MARKETING SPECIALIST By Stacy Moser

Elisabeth Stubbs proudly explains that her ancestors put down roots in Cobb County back in the mid-1800s, when her great, great grandfather, Robert Garrison, served here in local government. Elisabeth herself has lived in East Cobb with her husband, Don, since 1982. She describes what she loves about the area. “You’re close to shopping and nice restaurants—Marlow’s Tavern being a favorite—but I can sit in my backyard with the trees and birds. It’s the best of both worlds!” She and Don are a fixture in the community, owners of Enhance Floors & More on Roswell Road. What started out as a carpet-cleaning company eventually morphed into a 6,100-square-foot flooring sales and installation showroom, complete with room-like vignettes displaying thousands of flooring products.

I KNOW THAT FLOORING IS A BIG DEAL. IT’S YOUR HOUSE! YOU DON’T WANT TO MAKE A MISTAKE.

—ELISABETH STUBBS

Elisabeth and Don run the business together, successfully blending their personal and professional lives without driving each other completely crazy. “Don manages sales and installation and I handle the showroom and marketing,” Elisabeth explains. “What works for us is each having different areas of expertise and responsibility.”

When asked what flooring she chose for her own home, Elisabeth explains that she has wood laminate flooring, which is very durable and easily maintained. “There’s a good reason for that. I volunteer with Angels Among Us Pet Rescue, Inc., writing their newsletter and mentoring foster ‘parents.’ But we’re what they call ‘Foster Fails,’ a few times over,” she laughs. “We have five dogs that were supposed to go to other homes. They wormed their way into our hearts and now we’re family.” She says their affinity for animals makes them experts about the best flooring for homeowners with pets. “We steer them toward products that will hold up and perform. You may love shiny hardwood floors, but within a week of your dog chasing tennis balls across them, they’ll look like they’re 20 years old!” To learn more about Enhance Floors & More, turn to page 27. Spring Cleaning: The Men’s Health Checklist By Scott D. Miller, MD

Set up your annual wellness exam if you have not yet done so. Remember, it can often take a month or two to set up this lengthy appointment. Schedule a dentist appointment. Poor dental hygiene is associated with cardiovascular disease. Your mouth harbors bacteria that— when the gums are not healthy—can travel through your bloodstream and damage the vessel walls. Don’t forget about your yearly eye exam, even if you see fine. Your eye doctor can detect early signs of eye diseases before they become noticeable. This exam not only includes a vision test, but also measurement of eye pressure and examination of the retina (back wall of the eye). An eye doctor can also detect early signs of other diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure. Take inventory of your mental health boosters. Streamline your daily routines, especially at the beginning and end of each day. Also, set aside some time to foster the relationships you have with friends and family.

As the occasional warm and sunny day comingles with those late winter weeks, the anticipation of spring draws us to the outdoors. Although the new year is well underway, spring marks the renewal of our favorite lifestyle activities. But have our good habits hibernated for the winter? Clearing the clutter in our health routines should be at the top of the spring cleaning list. Here are a few suggestions to start you on your way: Spending more time outside will hopefully increase your activity level. Now would be a good time to revamp your exercise routine to include a balance of strength, aerobic, and flexibility training. Check all of these boxes and you’ll be sure to have a spring in your step. Look for my article on “Men’s Health Recipe: The Secret Ingredient” in the next issue.

Make a good night’s sleep a priority. Spring is also a good time to rotate and clean your mattress per the manufacturer’s instructions. Check your medicine cabinet for expired medications.

April – June 2019

Stock up on sunscreen. Even when the sun is not glaring, we need to protect our skin. Buy a pair of new shoes. You don’t realize that your athletic shoes have exceeded their lifespan until you buy your next pair. A new pair will also motivate you to exercise a little extra.

FOUNDATION REPAIR

Q

What are the primary causes of foundation issues?

A

Soil. In Georgia, we live on expansive red clay, which is highly susceptible to climate and temperature changes. When it rains heavily, that soil will expand and wash out. When we experience periods of drought, the soil will dry out and crumble. Whether caused by wash Tom DiGregorio and Joe Rusk out or dry out, that soil will weaken and can serve as a catalyst for multiple forms of foundation issues, including foundation settlement and foundation wall damage.

LANDSCAPE

Q

How do I keep my landscape looking lively in the wintertime?

Yards can often look tired in the winter. Instead of waiting till March or April to add mulch spread, make sure to mulch right after all the leaves have dropped in January. This, along with the addition of colorful glazed pots and winter flowering plants like the American holly, can help make your landscape look a lot more fresh Evan Rogers and Pete Wilkerson and alive.

Q

What problems can uneven concrete cause?

A

Years in Business: 19 Associations: NARI, BBB A+ Rated, Atlanta

Make sure your home stays cozy by having your roof inspected every two years. A reputable company should clean gutters and valleys of debris, check boots over protruding pipes and chimneys for cracks, and ensure your attic has an appropriate amount of insulation. To prevent ice damage, we generally recommend that you Chad Cruce have a professional increase ventilation, add insulation, seal air leaks, and remove overhanging tree limbs.

Aside from the eyesore that uneven concrete creates, the best reason to repair is to keep people safe. Uneven concrete can be a liability causing trips and falls. Plus, in certain areas, uneven concrete can lead to water drainage issues and cause costly structural damage.

Q

How do I spot a water leak before it becomes a big problem?

A

On your water bill, look for high usage, which can indicate a leak. Search your basement or crawl space for possible leaks as well. Our best advice? Have a licensed plumber perform a whole-home plumbing inspection annually. He or she will ensure your entire system is in good shape and spot Jerry Hall potential leaks you are unaware of, such as slow-running toilets or waterline leaks underground.

WATERPROOFING

Q

Why is it important to waterproof my basement for the winter?

A

Q

Homeowners should know that winter is the best time of year to waterproof their basement because here in Georgia the spring rains start in February. By being proactive and not reactive, you will be handling your foundation issue before the spring rains occur saving you the hassle of having to deal with Derek Ritchie your basement flooding and water damage to your personal property. How can I use flooring products to decorate my walls?

A

People often look for things that will catch the eye, with either texture or variation. Adding flooring to a wall space is great for highlighting a fireplace or breakfast nook. While you can use just about any flooring as wall décor, they make laminate and luxury vinyl lines for wall applications. These thinner, less heavy-duty versions of high-traffic Elisabeth Stubbs flooring are typically cheaper and easier to install vertically.

What benefits can an insulated garage door provide? Can I insulate my existing door?

A

Aside from the benefit of moderating the temperature in surrounding rooms, (especially above the garage), insulation also quiets the operation sound of the door and increases durability. If you have a noninsulated steel door, there are insulation panels you can install but most models come with insulation John Nale in them. It’s usually a better investment to purchase a door with insulation than to go back and add it.

Q

How do I properly maintain my outdoor lighting?

A

Since outdoor systems are exposed to the elements 365 days a year, we recommend annual maintenance at the very least. This process often includes pruning away foliage, cleaning the lenses, repositioning the lights if they have been knocked out of alignment, replacing timer batteries, and reburying any exposed wire from water erosion. WINDOW REPLACEMENT

Q A

What’s wrong with vinyl windows?

Vinyl windows are made of plastic material and do not withstand changes in temperature as well as fiberglass windows. Integrity windows from Marvin Windows and Doors are comprised of Ultrex® pultruded fiberglass, which outperforms vinyl and vinyl/wood composites in virtually every measurable category. Plus, the production of vinyl windows requires more energy and Peter Morrison resource consumption than the production of Ultrex®.

PAINTING

Q

How long should the average exterior paint job last?

A

At the minimum, a good exterior paint service should last for six to eight years. Many paint companies provide warranties on their products and services for at least this amount of time, if not more. To extend the life of your exterior paint, schedule Charlie Dallavalle regular cleaning and maintenance twice a year.

Q

What can I do to improve the efficiency of my heating and air-conditioning unit?

A

A great way to up the efficiency of your unit is to change your air filter regularly. If there are pets or smokers in the house you should change it monthly. Also, have your system properly maintained twice a year by an authorized factory representative. Finally, if your system is out of date consider replacing it with a new two-stage or variable speed system. Bill Mashraky and Mike Eberle
