WINTER 2019
Dear East Cobb Neighbors, I’ve been playing basketball since I was in high school. I remember coach Robert Hamilton welcoming me to the team and challenging me at our practices. He’d say, “Laurie! You can’t eat fast food and expect to move quickly up and down the court!” Of course, I’d mumble under my breath, “My name is not Laurie. It’s Laura. And I really like McDonald’s cheeseburgers!” Well, hindsight is 20/20. I’ve been playing on basketball teams ever since my days with coach Hamilton, and he was right! What you put into your body definitely shows on and off the court. Whether practicing my jump shot for hours or hitting the weight room, coach Hamilton always pushed me to be my best.

You don’t need to do it alone. As an education lawyer, I work with your family, medical providers, educators, and administrators to help develop a plan that is custom-tailored to your child’s needs. If you are confused about the process, concerned about your child’s right to a free and appropriate public education, or disagree with an Individualized Education Program that is in place, I may be able to help.

What Women Can Do for Men’s Health By Scott D. Miller, MD
It is well-established that women are more health-conscious than men. They tend to eat healthier, pamper their skin, floss their teeth daily, and go to the doctor regularly. Men, on the other hand, manage to put off these annual wellness visits. In fact, men are also more likely than women to make unhealthy choices such as smoking, excessive drinking, and aggressive driving. So how can women move the needle? I would imagine that most women turn the page when they see an article about men’s health. Whether it’s a husband, father, brother, or good friend, share these health tips with your loved ones. In fact, most of these articles also contain helpful advice for women. Of course, the best mentors teach by example. As already mentioned, this is where women have a head start. However, men can be oblivious to those cues. Nevertheless, it is much easier to make healthy decisions when the people around you make the same choices. Repeatedly making these favorable choices—particularly for shared activities—will heighten the awareness of healthy lifestyle decisions.
So here is your essential “can do” list for the men in your life:
Look for my article on “A Men’s Guide to a Healthy Winter” in the next issue.
• Stick to the calendar for those necessary doctor visits
Scott D. Miller, MD, is the Medical Director of Robotic Surgery at WellStar North Fulton Hospital. He is a urologist with WellStar Urology in Roswell and has practiced in Atlanta for over 20 years.
• Eat a healthy and balanced diet (in the right amounts) • Perform moderate exercise on a regular basis • Develop a good bedtime routine
OCTOBER – DECEMBER 2019
• Drive safely We all want to please others, but sometimes men need to hear what’s best for them. Don’t be afraid to say that a second basket of tortilla chips is a bit much while waiting for that order of fajitas. Point out when they’re looking fatigued and suggest a little more exercise and sleep. Approaching these sensitive issues can be difficult, but not as difficult as losing that loved one.
• Don’t smoke • Wear sunscreen • Take out the trash (are you still reading?) Sometimes men need a kick in the pants. Women are the best coaches for a healthy lifestyle. That’s one reason you never hear that women need a kick in the skirt.
WellStar North Fulton Hospital offers the Know Your Heart Screening that can determine your risk of heart disease, stroke and other serious conditions. Call 770-956-STAR (7827) to learn more or schedule an appointment.

The Kollas Family COMPASSIONATE GIVERS • VOLUNTEERS • MODELS By Katherine Sauceda
At age 3, Candace and Spencer’s son, Joshua, now 8, was diagnosed with Stevens-Johnson syndrome, a rare skin and mucous membrane disorder. He spent 16 days in the hospital and was discharged when the symptoms were no longer active. Through this unexpected situation, this East Cobb family decided to not take anything for granted. As part of this newfound appreciation for life, Candace and Spencer, along with their daughters Riley, 18, and Sydney, 16, sought out opportunities to give back to others through nonprofits like Ronald McDonald House Charities, and Children Helping Children (CHC), an organization that teaches kids to be philanthropic leaders.
Q: How did your family get involved with CHC? Candace Kollas: I have known Michelle [Hodgson], the founder, since college. We’ve participated in initiatives like the Be Well Bear backpacks [filled with art therapy supplies for children in hospitals] since they were being assembled in Michelle’s house. Riley served on the first Junior Board of Directors in 2014, and I’ve been serving on the Senior Board of Directors as the legal adviser since 2009. I make sure CHC is always in compliance with all nonprofit laws.
Q: What has working with CHC taught your family?
(BACK ROW, L TO R): SPENCER KOLLAS, CA NDACE KOLLAS,
RILEY, SYDNEY; (FRON T ROW): JOSHUA CK: The truth is, with our social climate being so self-centered nowadays, CHC is the biggest way we can educate our kids about the needs of others. If we don’t teach the next generation to be kind and giving, then the world will get increasingly less caring. CHC is the only organization I know that allows us to volunteer alongside our kids and gives them an idea that their little hands can make a giant difference.
Q: How does it feel to represent CHC?
Q: What are some of your family’s favorite East Cobb spots? CK: Our go-to places are Rosa’s Pizza and WZ Tavern. For a girls’ day, my daughters and I love shopping at Ivy Lane Boutique, where they also do some modeling. chcatlanta.org

Lizz Etter KICKBOXING MAMA • TRUSTED TEACHER • SOURCE OF STRENGTH By Barbra Buoy
Lizz Etter hates to relax. Just two months after having her second child, Wyatt, she was back in her local Gold’s Gym working out at least six days a week. “Kickboxing is my favorite! Slowing down is just not my forte. My BODYFLOW® class ends with 10 minutes of relaxation and I always leave before that part,” says Lizz. Born and raised in East Cobb, Lizz has brought this same energy and enthusiasm to her U.S. history classrooms for 14 years. Her duties expanded two years ago when she began serving as co-sponsor of the Sources of Strength (SOS) program (alongside guidance counselor Misty Hawk) at Lassiter High School, her alma mater. SOS aims to prevent suicide, violence, bullying, and substance abuse by training adults and peer leaders to create a network of support for students in distress. Lassiter implemented the program after two brothers were killed in a car crash. “We wanted to be as proactive as possible,” Lizz says. This year, SOS-trained staff were able to intervene when students reported troubling social media posts about their peers.

—LIZZ ETTER The program routinely brings in guest speakers to educate the Lassiter community on warning signs and they also host fun activities like handing out candy or wristbands that have ‘LHS: Stronger Together’ written on them. “But we know that we have to do more than hand out a lollipop,” Lizz says. “We’ve got to give the kids resources and remind them that they’re not alone. We’ve had students become peer leaders because they themselves were struggling.” Lassiter’s SOS peer leaders inspire Lizz daily. “You’re able to see another side of the students,” Lizz says. “When I see them commit themselves and know that what they’re doing is really making a difference, it just fills my teacher tank.” When she’s not in the classroom, Lizz enjoys spending time with her husband, Sean, whom she met at Lassiter, 3-year-old daughter, Willow, and Wyatt, savoring the cuisine of Marietta. Reveille Coffeehouse Café is a family favorite. “Their smoked gouda grits are just amazing. You’ll be ‘smoked gouda’ happy by the time you leave.” sourcesofstrength.org

Jeff Rowland Pope High School Head Baseball Coach The patriarch of baseball at Pope High School, Jeff Rowland, is officially at bat for his 25th year as a coach and teacher at Pope, and his 32nd as an educator. He’s coached multiple championship teams throughout the course of his career, and says the key to that success is chemistry. “We
talk about checking your ego at the door, and preach that when the team is successful, nobody really focuses on the individual accolades; it’s a team accomplishment,” Rowland says. That philosophy has led to an appearance at the state championship four years in a row. “I tip my cap to our guys because they just kept grinding it out and finding ways to win, and ultimately it got us in the state championship series,” he says. Of course, coach Rowland knows that it’s one thing to make it to the championship level, but it’s another thing to stay there. Adding, “What separates us from a lot of people is the continuity of my assistant coaches; five of the seven have played for me in the past.”

While football season is well underway, Sean Thom, Lassiter’s new head varsity football coach, says he continues to get excited about game days. “There is nothing like Friday nights in Georgia. I love watching our kids go out each week and perform to their highest potential possible.” Beyond that Friday feeling, Thom, a 10-year coaching veteran, says his job is simple: to be a “builder of

need to be lifted up constantly and given that encouragement so that they can be free to perform at the highest level possible.” It’s all about taking things one step at a time. “We focus on putting our

As Grace Marietta’s youth pastor and the chaplain for Wheeler High School’s football team, it was an honor to fill the Ultimate frisbee coach position at Wheeler. Cunningham has been a lifelong Ultimate frisbee lover and his support for neighborhood teens makes him a natural fit for this role. “I love showing students how to excel with Ultimate. Many players are already having fun out on the field, I just show them how to be their best and be competitive,” he says. Aside from honing their skills, Cunningham also hopes his students gain a sense of belonging.

kids. “I know my why. I’m here on this earth to help young people succeed in life.” One athlete in particular, Landon Clark, has forged a special relationship with Goss. “I helped him a lot on the mental side of the sport. Sometimes athletes get nervous and their confidence gets shaken. As a coach, you’ve got to reassure them that this is the right path,” says Goss. Landon remembers these lessons well. “In 2018, I was about halfway through a difficult set and was completely worn out. I was slipping off of the pace I needed to hold,” Clark says. “The only thing I remember from that set was coach Goss telling me that this is what it was going to take to accomplish my goals for the summer. He said, ‘Progress takes place outside of the comfort zone.’ I needed to dig deep.”

What are the best options for letting in plenty of light but still maintaining privacy?

We have a large variety of window treatments that maximize light while minimizing visibility from the outdoors into your home. Our plantation shutters are a popular choice because you can easily tilt the louvers to certain angles Andrea and Sean Zare allowing light to stream through. We can also add a center divider that allows you to close the bottom portion of the shutters for privacy and keep the top portion open for light.

What causes uneven concrete and cracks?
Most uneven and cracking concrete is caused by settlement. Settlement is due to one of three things: poorly compacted soil, erosion or decay. Prior to pouring, concrete preparation is extremely important for its longevity. Topsoil, clay and loose fill should be removed and a good base material should be installed and, most importantly, compacted. Erosion occurs when water is Michael Cangemi not properly managed around the concrete and decay oftentimes is the result of something organic under the concrete that decomposes over time.

What are the best flooring options for kids and pets?
Flooring types that are durable and stain resistant like laminates and luxury vinyl are quite popular because they are easy to take care of. Tile is very practical but Atlanta homeowners generally gravitate toward the warm feeling of a faux wood that has the appearance of wood. If you want real wood choose a floor with a lot of character so you don’t have to stress when life happens and Elisabeth Stubbs you get inevitable dings and scratches.

People are adding more and more edible areas to their landscape, investing in blueberry bushes and kitchen gardens where they can grow things like lettuce, parsley, and kale. We are also seeing a lot of people incorporating tomatoes, cucumbers, ornamental peppers and more into their perennial gardens Evan Rogers and Pete Wilkerson so they can enjoy the harvest and the visual appeal. Have a smaller space? Consider starting a potted herb garden with rosemary and parsley on your back porch or patio.

What are the different ways I can control my lighting system?
What are some of the benefits of installing a metal roof?
A
Although the initial cost of a metal roof might be higher than standard asphalt shingles, you can easily recoup your investment as this durable roof stands up to the elements and requires minimal maintenance and repairs. Metal roofs are also eco-friendly and energy efficient. Oftentimes made from recycled materials, Chad Cruce this type of roofing can save you up to 40 percent on annual energy costs. Plus, considering changing up your curb appeal? You can easily paint your metal roof to accommodate your home’s new aesthetic.

Traditional astronomical digital timers are the most popular, since they are economical. Your lights will come on at dusk and go off at whatever time you designate. We do not typically recommend Wi-Fi-enabled devices controlled via a smartphone because your lights will not come on if there is an issue with your internet. Proximity is usually an issue with Bluetooth-enabled controllers so we definitely stay away from them. If Lindsey Rodericks you want to control your landscape lights along with other exterior or interior lights from the same control point, we recommend hard-wired technology such as UPB.

Gas tankless heaters are an environmentally friendly option as they only heat water on demand, saving energy. Plus, with these models, you can enjoy almost unlimited hot water! Traditional gas water heaters are safer and more efficient than in years past but they Jerry Hall still fall short of the performance of tankless models. Finally, hybrid electric water heaters incorporate a heat pump into the system with Wi-Fi capability and smart thermostat communication. These heaters are amazingly efficient.

How can a new thermostat help make my home more energy efficient?

There are several signs to look for when trying to determine if replacing your windows (and doors) should be the next project on your home improvement list. Some of these telltale signs include difficult operation, drafty windows (aka loss of energy efficiency), condensation between the glass panes, and water stains, chipping or deterioration on or around the window. Peter Morrison Even if you don’t notice all of these signs, replacement can still be a great choice if your home needs a makeover or you want to reduce your energy bill.

Many Programmable Thermostats can be set to turn off when no one is home or to adjust the temperature to use less energy when residents are away. A Wi-Fi thermostat can also be adjusted from a distance when schedules change. Installing sophisticated high-tech thermostats like Lennox i-comfort S30 can automatically change over switches between heating and cooling depending on indoor temperatures. The smart away mode on the Bill Mashraky Lennox i-comfort S30 works with devices such as Amazon Alexa.

Q
Why is it important to have my crawl space inspected for water damage? What can be done if I notice a leak?
A water leak in your basement can easily lead to mold growth, which can cause health problems. The water can also deteriorate the wood by dryrotting the framing, which also attracts termites to the softer wood. The dry rot can lead to shifting of the frame resulting in door Derek Ritchie functionality problems and cracking of walls. The moment you suspect a leak, call a professional basement, crawl space and encapsulation company to get ahead of these problems.
