ou might recognize Decatur resident Nick Hagelin from Season 10 of NBC’s “The Voice.” This Atlanta-transplant’s story rides like a roller-coaster— Hagelin was nearly eliminated on the show twice, only to be saved by the show’s über-celebrity coaches, Pharrell Williams and Christina Aguilera. He sang his way into the Top 9, but didn’t make the cut just two episodes prior to the finale. “I think it worked out for the best, because I learned a ton in the process,” he admits. Nick gained notoriety on the TV show not just for his musical talent, but because of his five-year-old son, Bash, who has arthrogryposis, a disability that renders his muscles stiff and joints weak. During the episode where Hagelin was to choose a singing coach, he told the story of Bash’s struggle and Pharrell asked his family to join him on stage.

[

“I’m inspired when I share Bash’s story ...

]

This is how I gain momentum.”

FALL 2016

He says of working with his two celebrity coaches on the TV show, “Pharrell gave me confidence. His Pharrell-isms, like little nuggets of wisdom, help you express who you are through your music. Christina can give you a note and tell you when or when not to sing. She’s amazing.”

PHOTOGRAPHY BY VIC BONVICINI PHOTOGRAPHY, PHOTO BY VIC BONVICINI.

He explained that doctors told him and his wife, Christina, that Bash might never walk or eat by himself due to the progression of the disease. But the couple refused to give up and relentlessly pursued therapies for Bash to help him cope with the disease and flourish despite of it. As a result of their efforts, Bash took his first steps at age two and never looked back. Hagelin relates, “I’m inspired when I share Bash’s story. I mean, on stage with me, he took a bow for the world at five years old. This is how I gain momentum.”

But when the cameras shut off, Nick’s career path took a dive. A record deal he had fell apart when his allies at the label defected from the company, leaving his dreams on the cutting-room floor. After his elimination from the show and with no label, he struggled to pick up the pieces and move forward.

18 MYIT_016-021_Neighbors.indd 18

7/29/16 6:01 PM

He says that he decided he couldn’t give up—he realized that his recent disappointments were actually a blessing in disguise. After traveling frequently to Los Angeles to work on his album, now he’s focused on opportunities in Atlanta and spending more time at home. And, he says the up-and-coming music scene in Decatur has a lot to offer for his genre, soulful pop. When asked about his son’s disease, Hagelin says, “The doctors told us about some archaic surgery for his condition where you lock one arm up and one down. We decided to look for alternative treatments.” They found a therapist at the Upledger Institute who began working with Bash. “His sessions showed incredible results,” says Christina. “His tendons were like icicles before and they transformed to butter.” Good things are right around the corner for this family man. He’s independently promoting his new EP (extended play), “The Water,” and he also recently played a sold-out show at Eddie’s Attic alongside Owen Danoff—also a contestant on “The Voice” during Hagelin’s season. For Intown fun, Nick and his family enjoy dining at Decatur’s The Iberian Pig and Leon’s. He’s also pals with the owner of Antico Pizza and Gio’s Little Italia, where he was invited to sing with Usher one night recently. And, he says he loves to take his family to Oakhurst’s brunch hotspot Sun in My Belly.

Embraced Atlanta’s mission is to ensure that all people have access to quality assistive mobility devices and prosthetic medical equipment to improve the quality of their lives. The group even hosted a fundraiser to help fund Nick’s son’s “Magic Arms.” EmbracedAtlanta.org Nick’s own charity, Bashing Boundaries, holds dance classes that pair high-school dance students with special-needs kids. This breakthrough program helps these children thrive socially. Nick says, “One parent who is involved told me, ‘Before, I couldn’t bring my daughter to the grocery store because it was too stimulating. Now she runs into the studio on Saturdays for class!’” For 2016 class updates, visit BashDimpleton.com.

Nick says that getting to share the story of his son’s illness on “The Voice” was one of the biggest blessings he received from the experience. “There was such an outpouring of love from special-needs families and support groups who were touched.”

Madison James

RADIO HOST • FITNESS GURU • AMBASSADOR

While most assume Madison James is a born and bred “ATLien,” this workout enthusiast and media personality has actually only called the city home for a few years. After relocating here from Tennessee for work, she jumped right into the Atlanta exercise scene and her passion for fitness has helped shape her strong community involvement. As a former Division 1 basketball college athlete, it was James’ competitive spirit that led her to the world of fitness competitions. She admits that she chose to go to improper lengths to become “stage lean” though, which took a toll on her, both mentally and physically. After a cancer scare, James realized that she might have appeared healthy on the outside, but on the inside she wasn’t. With help, she learned how to take stock of her lifestyle and put her health first. As a result of this fitness journey, she became inspired to share her knowledge about the importance of nutrition, wellness and exercise with others. “It’s about more than needing to lose five pounds,” she explains. “Just taking care of yourself—that’s a big passion of mine.” James’ voice can be heard on B98.5 and she can be seen on WSB-TV’s “460” and as a reporter for entertainment magazine Hot Topics. Her fitness expertise, combined with her vivacious personality, made her an ideal choice as an ambassador for the Atlanta BeltLine project. Her support of the BeltLine’s mission to unite Atlanta’s niche neighborhoods and encourage people to explore their communities while being active is what drew her to move to Grant Park.

20 MYIT_016-021_Neighbors.indd 20

When she isn’t working out in Old Fourth Ward Park, grabbing brunch at Carroll Street Café or indulging in a binge session watching her favorite reality show, “Big Brother,” you can catch her this fall at some of her latest philanthropic ventures— including her annual Sips and Stilettos event, benefiting Susan G. Komen Greater Atlanta, and at the AIDS Walk Atlanta & 5K Run 2016, both on October 16.

“It was the best move ever. The sense of community is just so different. It’s nice to walk to places. I actually know my neighbors now. I was always an advocate for the BeltLine, but now I’m a part of it,” she enthuses.

Peter Michelson R E M O D E L E R • C O A C H • FAT H E R

Building homes is in Peter Michelson’s DNA. As a young man, he strapped on a toolbelt and learned the business of carpentry literally from the ground up. Now he owns and operates Renewal Design + Build with his brother, David. When he’s not at work, you can find him bass fishing, taking in a Red Sox game (he grew up in Boston) or hanging out with his family and friends at one of his Decatur favorites, the Brick Store Pub.

Q

: You traveled across Asia as a young man and even lived in a monastery in Thailand for a time. You developed a great appreciation for living “in the moment.” How does that affect your parenting style?

My wife, Sara, and I are teaching our two boys to focus on what’s happening “in the now.” One of my favorite things to do with them every year is go to the wilderness of northern Minnesota. We canoe into really remote places and spend two weeks fishing and camping. No cellphones, no computers—heck, no people really. They’ve developed a strong sense of self-confidence from those experiences.

Q

: You’ve said giving back to your Intown community is important to you. What makes you most proud?

I have to say it’s my time as president of the Rotary Club of Decatur. We raised over $18,000 in grants for local programs focusing on at-risk youth and literacy. I also really enjoy my work with the Druid Hills Youth Sports baseball program. Again, it goes back to my philosophy about life—focusing on the moment. Like with a pitcher on the mound, all eyes are on you. If you’ve had a bad day, you have to let it go and be in the moment. It’s great training for life.

Q

: When it comes to work, what type of project gets your team excited?

We do it all—from remodeling projects to historic restorations. But we

are most passionate about the people who inhabit a home. We pride ourselves in listening carefully to find out what about their living space isn’t working for them. If a home isn’t laid out well, it won’t fit the family’s needs—we take disconnected spaces and update them so families feel connected.
