Help with math project? Check. Get the kids to rehearsal on time? Check. Review homework? Check. With school underway, there are basic tasks that need to be completed. And as the parent, it’s your responsibility to make sure that everything gets done. But sometimes, things fall through the cracks and you just can’t possibly do it all. That’s when standout teachers from our neighborhood schools like the five we’re featuring in this issue come into play. We asked and you answered. And thanks to your top teacher nominations, we can see why
my
We salute those making a difference in our community. From providing an extra word of encouragement to sparking the imagination, our neighborhood kids are pushed to new heights thanks to magnificent mentors like these! If your favorite teacher wasn’t highlighted in this issue, share more about him or her on our @MySandySprings Facebook page. We’d love to hear how this person is influencing your child’s life.

your children are succeeding in more ways than one. Read p. 30 to find out why first grade teachers like Katrina Verde of Lake Forest Elementary are changing the classroom one student at a time. I knew a couple of extraordinary educators myself. My high school yearbook adviser, Ms. McQuade, not only helped me perfect the art of writing captions but she also spent quality time getting to know me as well. And when I was working on my master’s degree, Dean Hawkins believed in me when I didn’t even believe in myself.

Gemma K. Patel OPTOMETRIST • MOM-TO-BE • CULINARIAN
By Alex McCray
When Gemma K. Patel, O.D., saw a gap among optometry practices, she knew she could fill it. “My vision (no pun intended) was to create a practice with a family-friendly environment and a modern look and feel,” Gemma says. In December of 2016, the 29-year-old University of Georgia graduate bridged that gap by opening Windsor Eye Care. It’s easy to see why the community has embraced it. From colorful worn books and a cartoon about a football player testing his vision, to tufted chairs and the neutral ikat print that lines the walls, the practice exudes a contemporary feel. And though it’s only closing in on its one-year anniversary, the bond Gemma and her optician, Frank Uzoka, are building with the neighborhood is evident. It’s not uncommon for patients to stop by the Gateway retail complex just to say hello. “This community has been so welcoming—where else would you see this?” says Gemma. It’s that kind of one-on-one interaction with people that drew her to the field of medicine and to Sandy Springs in the first place. “We are not your average eye doctor’s office,” Gemma states. “We’re proud that patients feel that they’ve received their most thorough eye exam ever in under 40 minutes.”
[
[
IT’S NOT UNCOMMON FOR PATIENTS TO STOP BY JUST TO SAY HELLO. “THIS COMMUNITY HAS BEEN SO WELCOMING,” GEMMA SAYS. IT’S THAT KIND OF INTERACTION WITH PEOPLE THAT DREW HER TO THE FIELD OF MEDICINE AND TO SANDY SPRINGS.
And when it comes to finding that perfect pair of glasses after the exam, there are plenty to choose from—including WOOW, a frame line made in Italy, which comes in eye-catching hues like magenta and turquoise, a variety of patterns, and fun frame shapes (cat eye, anyone?). There’s a brand for every personality. Tory Burch and Prada eyewear line the shelves, too. When the white coat comes off, the expectant mother loves grabbing a bite to eat with her husband, Michael, at Tupelo Honey Café, and Verde Taqueria. She even dabbles in cooking. “I often cook traditional Indian food, including popular dishes such as chicken curry and lamb kebabs. I can also make a pretty mean broccoli, cheese and tomato quiche.” Overall, Gemma says, “Sandy Springs has great places to eat, relax and play.” WindsorEyeCareAtl.com

The practice can also handle situations beyond routine exams, glasses, and contact lenses. It can deal with ocular disease emergencies or determine if you’re a candidate for laser surgery. Plus, all the lenses in glasses at Windsor Eye Care are treated with blue-light filtering technology. This protects sensitive cells within the retina from harmful light from computers, cellphones, and light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs.

By Stacy Moser
It takes a person with a lot of fortitude to do the job Sheila Ryan does every day. As the CEO of the Georgia Center for Child Advocacy (GCCA), Sheila comes face-to-face with the dark side of life—children who suffer from abuse and sexual exploitation. “I think I’ve always been pretty good at compartmentalizing things,” she says when asked how she copes with the daily onslaught of injustice. “What drives me is knowing that these horrible things are happening and we can do something about it.” “I was previously in business consulting and was always looking to solve problems for my company. Now, I’m working to solve the problems of society. I’m reaching out to people and saying, ‘This is why you need to support this cause.’ I tell them how donating to the GCCA works for the greater good.”
WE CAN DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.
[
The GCCA originated in 1987 in response to an unintentional injustice caused by the judicial system itself. “We tell the story of a young girl who had been abused and was being processed through the system,” Sheila explains. As the girl was shuffled from one agency to the next, she was asked to tell the story of her abuse over and over. “Finally the girl asked, ‘Why do I have to keep telling my story—can’t you all talk to each other?’ That’s when the light bulb went off.” Sheila says the goal now is to stop dragging children through the pain of those terrible memories. “We work to make sure the child quickly moves past the incident. We want them to get treatment immediately, focus on healing and move forward.” The GCCA provides prevention, intervention, and therapy for children at locations in Fulton and DeKalb counties. In addition, the Center also collaborates with partners like the Sandy Springs Police Department and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Sheila says she appreciates some decompression time when she leaves work. “It’s so great that you can walk out your door in Sandy Springs and go for a jog and you have restaurants and fitness options that are literally a mile away.” She finds life balance in a yoga class at Springs Yoga Studio and … “I admit, I’ve bought my fair share of pies from Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop!” Find abuse-prevention training classes at GeorgiaCenterForChildAdvocacy.org. By Stacy Moser
If you’ve ever made the trek around Chastain Park’s wooded path after work on a weeknight, you probably have walked right past Nasim Jina, owner of the TCBY (The Country’s Best Yogurt) store on Roswell Road. Most days, after serving customers frozen treats from her shop, Nasim heads out for a walk. Her path to settle in Sandy Springs, circuitous like her walk around Chastain Park, brought her here from across the globe. She spent her childhood in Tanzania, East Africa, where her father was a well-to-do owner of coffee and sisal plantations. In the early 1970s, the government there nationalized businesses, and her father, wary of the effect those changes might have on his family, encouraged Nasim and her sister to immigrate to Toronto, Canada— the rest of the family later joined them. Her father and brother traveled South to buy properties in Atlanta, and Nasim followed on a business trip. “The minute I got to Atlanta, I fell in love with it. It was very small then, but I thought to myself, ‘I’m going to stay put.’” She married and had a daughter, Sabrina; then, when Sabrina went off to college, she decided she wanted a business of her own.
[
[
“I heard this TCBY shop was for sale in the Fountain Oaks Shopping Center,” Nasim recounts. “I bought it in 2002.” She built a loyal following in the neighborhood and calls most of her customers friends. As evidence of the strength of those friendships, Nasim tells of her life’s biggest challenge—breast cancer. “I went for a routine mammogram in 2014 and they found it. Everything happened so quickly—within a week, I started chemotherapy and later had surgery. Luckily, the treatment worked. I’m a survivor.” She says the encouragement of her friends, family and customers are what got her through the ordeal. “As customers found out, they came in just to show their support,” she says. “They knew the days I had treatment, and they came by with flowers and cards. So many women told me their own stories and encouraged me to stay strong and fight! They still check on me. I’m blessed to have this business and such loving customers.” Now that she’s healthy, she gets out and about in Sandy Springs, enjoying meals at Rumi’s Kitchen and Food 101. “Long walks all over Sandy Springs make me happy,” she says. “I love it here.” Store.TCBY.com/Home/FountainOaksShoppingCenter

“If students know you care about them, they respond to you and want to learn,” says Kelly Coury. “I want to help children who aren’t confident in their ability to succeed. When a child lacks confidence, I find something that interests him or her and create an assignment around that topic. Then, when they start to feel comfortable, that confidence will carry over into other areas of their lives.” Kelly says asking a child about the small things is important.
Penny Zinsenheim brings the world of reading and technology to her students. “I also collaborate with teachers to help with their technological challenges in the classroom,” she explains. She says she

“I love that age because they’re so eager to learn and have such curious minds. They’re becoming more independent, more confident in themselves—and they exemplify tenacity! Since they have such inquiring minds, it’s a challenge to keep up with them. Sometimes they are the ones teaching me things!” And she isn’t just a positive influence in her classroom, in her spare time, she is a coach for Girls on the Run, a nonprofit organization empowering preteen girls to be positive, healthy and independent—both physically and emotionally.
