WINTER 2019
Dear Sandy Springs Neighbors, I’ve been playing basketball since I was in high school. I remember coach Robert Hamilton welcoming me to the team and challenging me at our practices. He’d say, “Laurie! You can’t eat fast food and expect to move quickly up and down the court!” Of course, I’d mumble under my breath, “My name is not Laurie. It’s Laura. And I really like McDonald’s cheeseburgers!” Well, hindsight is 20/20. I’ve been playing on basketball teams ever since my days with coach Hamilton, and he was right! What you put into your body definitely shows on and off the court. Whether practicing my jump shot for hours or hitting the weight room, coach Hamilton always pushed me to be my best.

Residential Construction Secrets WHAT SOME CONTRACTORS DON’T WANT YOU TO KNOW…
Keys to success with any remodeling project Implementing a construction project in your home can be daunting. At Oneida Builders we understand that. Since our business started in 1997, we’ve worked hard to implement processes that make the entire experience better for our clients. “The Oneida Way” delivers excellence at every stage of the process starting with the creative design that means really listening to our clients’ needs and understanding how they use their homes. Then, during construction, the owner, Rocco Sinisgalli, is on-site managing each step. We understand the need for constant communication with clients to meet expectations and timelines. We also help with design selections to ensure the project stays on time and on budget. No matter who you choose for your remodeling project, make sure you ask about and understand the entire process. See our helpful insights below.

REFERENCES: Referrals, reviews, ratings and asking the right questions about project management, issue resolution, and communication are all important parts of your research prior to selecting a contractor.
2
GET IT IN WRITING: Residential construction agreements establish agreement between you and your contractor to ensure both parties are protected. Scope, payments, timing and other considerations should be outlined. Oneida Secret: Make sure you have a clause in your contract stating, “Contractor shall be in default under this agreement if it or any subcontractor shall fail to perform any work on the project for 5 consecutive business days.”
3
YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR: Costs are important, but delivery, insurance (general liability and
workers’ compensation), warranty and service are key parts of the cost package too. These benefits will outlast the cleared checks once your renovation is complete.
4
COST SAVINGS AND INVESTMENT RETURNS: With any home improvement project, there are ways to accomplish ongoing cost savings with added improvements and design decisions made up front. Oneida Builders’ expertise in these areas is included whether you’re renovating your kitchen, basement, bathroom or other spaces.
5
INNOVATION AND QUALITY: These can both be attained without sacrificing budgets or time. Financing can be included along with design services and selections to establish a successful plan for your project.
Oneida Builders has been partnering with clients in Sandy Springs and the surrounding areas for over 22 years. Our home renovations have added value to their investments and lifestyle. Recently, one of our clients added living space to their home that was designed to be a year-round room as a screened porch, a patio enclosed sunroom and an open-air porch. By working with Oneida Builders, we helped them turn their $25,000 investment into an increased $75,000 appraisal for their home. The same results can be seen in our 4-week kitchen projects. Our clients are amazed that within a month’s time, they can entertain and cook in a whole new space filled with lighting, appliances, flooring, countertops and high-quality cabinetry. See our 4 week kitchen video at OneidaBuilders.net/4-week-kitchen and more information on our website, where you can view before and after photos of our projects.

hen Boutique for Cosmetic Dentistry opened in Sandy Springs this summer, Dr. Azy Esfandiari and her team had one goal—to strive for quality. They envisioned a small, privately owned boutique setting that would enable them to focus on the needs of each patient, keeping their well-being at the
forefront of every decision. The practice embodies those initial elements of excellence, including highly individualized patient care, cutting-edge cosmetic dentistry services and compassionate, general dentistry that allows every patient to feel good about their results.
Dr. Azy’s success is also in part to the influence of important mentors throughout her career. “Every person has that one mentor they look up to,” says Dr. Azy. “I am extremely blessed to have one so close to me who I can call, email, see at any time, and from whom I have learned so much.”

“We invest in the best, most up-to-date technology, and we care about quality, not quantity,” says Dr. Azy. “We are one of the very few offices here in the Atlanta area that offer Digital Smile Design—a service that allows patients to explore the idea of altering their smile before treatment begins. She pays it forward, expending the expertise she’s gained to general dentistry, including routine cleanings, teeth whitening, composite fillings and more, as well as cosmetic dentistry, including the latest technology for smile makeovers, Invisalign®, and Botox®, to name a few. Her five-person team is purposeful in its size, creating an intimate setting to provide dedicated attention to each patient’s wants and needs. “We believe the best outcomes come from achieving our patient’s goals. It is always about the patient—what makes them feel their best,” she says. “We listen to what our patients want, before telling them what they need, and our entire team is invested in the patient’s progress.” As a result, it’s no surprise her patients are invested in her, too. “As mentioned in my chapter [of Dr. Goldstein’s book], I believe successful dental treatment is measured not only by the doctor, but also by the patient. The inability to fulfill my patients’ expectations and needs results in a failure—even if it’s the most beautiful smile to everyone else. I treat every patient as I would my own family member, and their comfort puts me at ease.” Dr. Azy lives in Sandy Springs with her husband, Arash, and 2-year-old daughter, Sophia. They love traveling, music and local restaurants—a few favorites being Brooklyn Cafe, Rumi’s Kitchen, and Kaiser’s Chophouse. boutiqueforcosmeticdentistry.com, Boutique for Cosmetic Dentistry, 5975 Roswell Rd., Ste. The new treatment allows dentists to map out a patient’s cosmetic dentistry plan by illustrating their vision through 3D imagery and predicting its success. “With DSD, we’re able to digitally create a new smile that you can also physically ‘try on,’” says Dr. Azy. “This technology allows us to create a mock-up of your new smile that you can actually wear before committing to any specific treatment.” Patients can design a new smile and begin treatment in the same day, and achieve their desired results in as little as three to four weeks.

The Millers
TENNIS LOVERS • FRIENDS • PHILANTHROPIC FAMILY By Katherine Sauceda
School buddies Logan Miller and Logan Hodgson, both 14, paved the way for the Miller family to get more involved in the community. The Sandy Springs family already enjoyed giving back locally through fundraising efforts for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta but were looking for more hands-on opportunities. As the founder of Children Helping Children (CHC), an organization teaching kids to be philanthropic leaders, Hodgson’s mom, Michelle, knew the perfect way the Millers could help.
Q: How did your family get involved with CHC?
(L TO R): LOGAN, BA ILLIE, AND KU (INSET): KATIE MILLER RT MILLER
Q: How has CHC benefited your family? Kurt: This organization gives our family an outlet to reach out and make a difference in other people’s lives. It creates a sense of empathy that inspires us to want to do more.
Q: What does CHC mean to your family? Kurt: It means being part of a giving group of people. Whenever we go to LOVEFEST-Free Family Philanthropic Festival, our kids love all of the booths, especially the shoe-cleaning station. It’s designed for volunteers to clean donated sneakers that will later be given to less fortunate kids and teens. The experience cultivates a spirit to serve others using your unique skills and talents. The message of this organization tells everyone that they contributed something special. CHC allows everyone’s ‘light to shine,’ as Michelle says.
Q: What are some Sandy Springs spots your family likes to frequent? Kurt: My wife and I love going to our kids’ sporting events. Logan, and Baillie, 12, play tennis with the North Atlanta Tennis Academy. We usually grab a bite to eat at Hearth Pizza Tavern or Casi Cielo. On Saturdays, we spend time at the Heritage Sandy Springs Farmers Market. chcatlanta.org

Kurt Miller: My wife, Katie, and Michelle [Hodgson] became good friends when our sons met at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School. Michelle reached out to her so we could join CHC. In 2010, we began volunteering and immediately saw what it meant to our kids to be committed to something special at their young age. This organization has been close to our hearts since then. Katie is now on the Advisory Board [a group of former Senior Board of Directors members that provide advice and aid to current board members] and has helped CHC gain corporate sponsorships. We’re hoping Logan will want to be a part of the Junior Board of Directors in the future.

What Women Can Do for Men’s Health By Scott D. Miller, MD
It is well-established that women are more health-conscious than men. They tend to eat healthier, pamper their skin, floss their teeth daily, and go to the doctor regularly. Men, on the other hand, manage to put off these annual wellness visits. In fact, men are also more likely than women to make unhealthy choices such as smoking, excessive drinking, and aggressive driving. So how can women move the needle? I would imagine that most women turn the page when they see an article about men’s health. Whether it’s a husband, father, brother, or good friend, share these health tips with your loved ones. In fact, most of these articles also contain helpful advice for women. Of course, the best mentors teach by example. As already mentioned, this is where women have a head start. However, men can be oblivious to those cues. Nevertheless, it is much easier to make healthy decisions when the people around you make the same choices. Repeatedly making these favorable choices—particularly for shared activities—will heighten the awareness of healthy lifestyle decisions.
So here is your essential “can do” list for the men in your life:
Look for my article on “A Men’s Guide to a Healthy Winter” in the next issue.
• Stick to the calendar for those necessary doctor visits
Scott D. Miller, MD, is the Medical Director of Robotic Surgery at WellStar North Fulton Hospital. He is a urologist with WellStar Urology in Roswell and has practiced in Atlanta for over 20 years.
• Eat a healthy and balanced diet (in the right amounts) • Perform moderate exercise on a regular basis • Develop a good bedtime routine
OCTOBER – DECEMBER 2019
• Drive safely We all want to please others, but sometimes men need to hear what’s best for them. Don’t be afraid to say that a second basket of tortilla chips is a bit much while waiting for that order of fajitas. Point out when they’re looking fatigued and suggest a little more exercise and sleep. Approaching these sensitive issues can be difficult, but not as difficult as losing that loved one.
• Don’t smoke • Wear sunscreen • Take out the trash (are you still reading?) Sometimes men need a kick in the pants. Women are the best coaches for a healthy lifestyle. That’s one reason you never hear that women need a kick in the skirt.
WellStar North Fulton Hospital offers the Know Your Heart Screening that can determine your risk of heart disease, stroke and other serious conditions. Call 770-956-STAR (7827) to learn more or schedule an appointment.

Inspiring Coaches of Sandy Springs Standout Mentors Guide Players to Reach Their Goals By Nicole Letts and Alex Patton

eing a coach is a rare opportunity to get to know athletes at their best and their worst, and to be their support system through their sweetest team will go on to break records or play professionally, coaches believe
that dedicated participation in sports leads to a more well-rounded lifestyle and a strong sense of personal confidence.
Julie Ferris North Springs High School Head Water Polo Coach As a coach of one of only 15 water polo programs in the state, Julie Ferris says her job is as fulfilling as it is integral. In fact, she returns to the water each season for one reason: safety. “The more kids I can help love swimming and become strong swimmers keeps me in it,” she explains. Besides helping kids learn how to swim confidently, Ferris wants to help her athletes develop an even stronger connection to the lifelong sport.
“With water polo, we’ve noticed that kids stick with swimming longer because it gives them an outlet,” she says. Some have even become coaches. “To see them working with their kids, encouraging them and teaching them how to be strong swimmers and to do things the right way is fun for me,” she says. There’s no better testament of a great coach than someone who inspires an athlete to become a coach themselves.

Melissa Drish juggles a lot of balls at The Weber School. Last season, as an assistant soccer coach, a sport in which she played and coached collegiately, she was honored with the 2018-2019 Assistant Coach of the Year Award.
“I was really excited to be recognized for the impact I’m making on these kids, and hopefully that impact can help change their futures and their outlook on sports and exercise,” she says. More recently,
2019 VARSITY GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM MEMBERS TRIUMPHANTLY LIFT THEIR GHSA A-PRIVATE STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHY.
Nichole Dixon Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School Assistant Athletic Director and Head Girls Varsity Basketball Coach For Nichole Dixon, the age-old phrase, “there’s no ‘I’ in team” rings true, particularly for last season’s state championship team. “Our kids really embraced their roles. They pushed each other on and off the court. There were kids on our team that only got to get on the court in the state championship for a minute, but they were just as important to developing our team as the kid that was on the court the entire time,” she says. The team’s effort exemplifies Dixon’s Bible-based coaching philosophy of one body, many parts. “I believe that our basketball team is a collection of people made up of individuals that bring their different gifts and talents to the table. All those pieces to the puzzle contribute to that one team being as good as it can possibly be. And that doesn’t necessarily mean that we win a state championship every year. The most important part is that we learn life lessons along the way.”

Drish has also been named the assistant athletic director and head volleyball coach. In addition, she’ll take on the role of teacher by leading a few classes in the Weber Sports Sciences Academy curriculum, one of the only programs of its kind in the state. “We have extremely good, hardworking kids that are willing to put in the effort [for a college accredited program]. They’ll work hard as a team on the field and on the court; these classes give them a sense of sports while still focusing on their academics.”

“Kids are more apt to work hard for you if they know that you really care about them and their well-being, not just on the court, but outside of the
court, including in the classroom and during whatever extracurriculars they’re involved in, too. That’s the most important piece of coaching,” Tulowitzky says.
Scott Mandy Marist School Physical Education Department Chair, Varsity Boys Lacrosse Head Coach, and Strength and Conditioning Coach Scott Mandy knows sports. As a physical education teacher and coach for nearly two decades, Mandy says he most enjoys watching his players grow inside and outside of sports. “Marist is a very competitive school to enter, and an even more competitive academic environment,” he says.
“These kids are hardworking and highly driven. They’re not just great lacrosse players but are well-rounded in service and academic areas. I’ve got kids who are talented musicians and artists, as well as strong athletes.”

Those two things carry over to any part of your daily life. You control how you present yourself and your attitude,” he says. And that A and E has paid off. Adding, “This past year was the first time that we made the state tournament in 15 years. That was one of my goals when I came here—and we did it!”

The Truth About The Effects of Aging By Paul E. Cox, MD, MS
Before you give in to “normal aging,” get your hormones checked. You may not have suddenly become depressed, anxious or fatigued for no reason. Too often, those of us in our late 30s, 40s and 50s are told by our physicians that our experiences with our mind and bodies are just “normal parts of aging.” Fortunately, it may not just be aging that has you feeling different. It might be your hormones and that means there is something we can actually do to change how you feel and what is happening to your body for the better.
So, before you give in to “normal aging,” get your hormones checked. You may not have suddenly become depressed, anxious or fatigued for no reason. There could be a biological reason that you don’t feel like yourself anymore. You may not need an antidepressant, AMBIEN®, or ADDERALL® for your new problems. You may just need to get your hormones right.
I was taught as a resident (training) physician that when someone in this (my) age range complained about lack of energy, poor sleep, decreased concentration, increased anxiety, weight gain, muscle loss, etcetera, that the patient might be depressed, have anxiety, insomnia or just signs of normal aging. The reality is that all of these symptoms and more (worsening premenstrual syndrome for women, lack of sex drive in men and women, and irritability, just to name a few) are very often the direct result of hormonal changes in our bodies.
Let’s be honest, hormones are not the cause of every problem we encounter through the aging process. But, I am convinced that they can be a large part of why we feel, think and look different as we age. If they are a part of that problem, why not find out what is going on and fix that first? As someone who has experienced hormonal deficiency first hand and thought it was depression, I can tell you that there isn’t a medication in the world that can make up for a hormonal deficiency. And what is more natural than giving our bodies and our brains the natural molecules they need for us to function and feel our best?
The good news is that these changes are easily detectable in blood work and easily treated with hormonal therapies directed at the specific imbalances. Make no mistake, this is not your grandmother’s hormone therapy of an estrogen patch or pill without any labs to follow the results. It’s also not the old-time testosterone therapy for men, which was usually a shot of testosterone every two weeks without any labs. No, state-of-the-art hormonal therapy is based on sound scientific evidence and labs that tell us which hormones your body and brain needs, how much of these hormones your body and brain needs, and when your body and brain needs them. Notice, I said brain. There is a growing body of literature that demonstrates that the human brain needs these hormones (estrogen, progesterone, testosterone and thyroid hormones) to function at its best. Better brain and better body function simply means a better you.
Thank you for your time. If this article is resonating with you, please let us talk to you more about how your hormones might be an issue. Board certified in antiaging and family medicine, Paul E. What are the best options for letting in plenty of light but still maintaining privacy?
A
We have a large variety of window treatments that maximize light while minimizing visibility from the outdoors into your home. Our plantation shutters are a popular choice because you can easily tilt the louvers to certain angles Andrea and Sean Zare allowing light to stream through. We can also add a center divider that allows you to close the bottom portion of the shutters for privacy and keep the top portion open for light.

Q A
What causes uneven concrete and cracks?
Most uneven and cracking concrete is caused by settlement. Settlement is due to one of three things: poorly compacted soil, erosion or decay. Prior to pouring, concrete preparation is extremely important for its longevity. Topsoil, clay and loose fill should be removed and a good base material should be installed and, most importantly, compacted. Erosion occurs when water is Michael Cangemi not properly managed around the concrete and decay oftentimes is the result of something organic under the concrete that decomposes over time.

Q A
What are the best flooring options for kids and pets?
Flooring types that are durable and stain resistant like laminates and luxury vinyl are quite popular because they are easy to take care of. Tile is very practical but Atlanta homeowners generally gravitate toward the warm feeling of a faux wood that has the appearance of wood. If you want real wood choose a floor with a lot of character so you don’t have to stress when life happens and Elisabeth Stubbs you get inevitable dings and scratches.

People are adding more and more edible areas to their landscape, investing in blueberry bushes and kitchen gardens where they can grow things like lettuce, parsley, and kale. We are also seeing a lot of people incorporating tomatoes, cucumbers, ornamental peppers and more into their perennial gardens Evan Rogers and Pete Wilkerson so they can enjoy the harvest and the visual appeal. Have a smaller space? Consider starting a potted herb garden with rosemary and parsley on your back porch or patio.

What are the different ways I can control my lighting system?
What are some of the benefits of installing a metal roof?
A
Although the initial cost of a metal roof might be higher than standard asphalt shingles, you can easily recoup your investment as this durable roof stands up to the elements and requires minimal maintenance and repairs. Metal roofs are also eco-friendly and energy efficient. Oftentimes made from recycled materials, Chad Cruce this type of roofing can save you up to 40 percent on annual energy costs. Traditional astronomical digital timers are the most popular, since they are economical. Your lights will come on at dusk and go off at whatever time you designate. We do not typically recommend Wi-Fi-enabled devices controlled via a smartphone because your lights will not come on if there is an issue with your internet. Proximity is usually an issue with Bluetooth-enabled controllers so we definitely stay away from them. If Lindsey Rodericks you want to control your landscape lights along with other exterior or interior lights from the same control point, we recommend hard-wired technology such as UPB.

Gas tankless heaters are an environmentally friendly option as they only heat water on demand, saving energy. Plus, with these models, you can enjoy almost unlimited hot water! Traditional gas water heaters are safer and more efficient than in years past but they Jerry Hall still fall short of the performance of tankless models. Finally, hybrid electric water heaters incorporate a heat pump into the system with Wi-Fi capability and smart thermostat communication. These heaters are amazingly efficient.

WINDOW REPLACEMENT
Q
How do I know my windows need to be replaced?
A
There are several signs to look for when trying to determine if replacing your windows (and doors) should be the next project on your home improvement list. Some of these telltale signs include difficult operation, drafty windows (aka loss of energy efficiency), condensation between the glass panes, and water stains, chipping or deterioration on or around the window. Peter Morrison Even if you don’t notice all of these signs, replacement can still be a great choice if your home needs a makeover or you want to reduce your energy bill.

Q
Why is it important to have my crawl space inspected for water damage? What can be done if I notice a leak?
A water leak in your basement can easily lead to mold growth, which can cause health problems. The water can also deteriorate the wood by dryrotting the framing, which also attracts termites to the softer wood. The dry rot can lead to shifting of the frame resulting in door Derek Ritchie functionality problems and cracking of walls. The moment you suspect a leak, call a professional basement, crawl space and encapsulation company to get ahead of these problems.
