FLOORING
GARAGE DOORS
Q A
What are the hottest trends in flooring?
Luxury vinyl is all the rage these days. The industry has made impressive strides in the design of this material so that it is durable but can look almost identical to a variety of more highmaintenance flooring options. Homeowners are moving away from darker colors with glossy finishes and are leaning toward lighter and medium toned woods with more “character.” Elisabeth Stubbs The distressed look is definitely in and great for families with children and pets who might add some nicks and scratches.

Q
How much return on investment can I expect from replacing my garage door?
A
A street-facing garage door can take up to a third of the front of your home. With such a large effect on your curb appeal, research shows that a new garage door installation can provide between a 90- to 110-percent ROI. Most doors can be replaced in less than John Nale five hours, making this a quick one to check off the list!

Q
Are there any paint types that help to reduce mold and ward off pests?
A
Many latex paints have mold and mildew inhibitors in them. You can also add mold inhibitors to other paint types for extra protection. When it comes to pests, there is an additive called Bug Juice, which you can mix in with your paint and it will kill bugs upon contact Charlie Dallavalle with the exterior finish.

What are some early signs of foundation issues?
A
A few things to look for include foundation settlement, vertical or stair-step foundation wall cracks (external or internal), a tilting chimney, and doors or windows that jam or stick. Also, check for internal wall cracks extending from the top corner of a door or window diagonally toward Tom DiGregorio and Joe Rusk the ceiling/corner of the wall on which the door or window sits. Catch these telltale signs early and you could potentially save thousands on repairs later.

Q A
How long do average concrete repairs take?
One or two sections of sidewalk could take 1½ to 2 hours to repair, compared to a garage floor, which could take a day or more. Each job is different. From the area to how much leveling is needed to the size of the void, all of these factors contribute to Michael Cangemi the time required to complete a repair.

A running toilet can be caused by worn parts in the toilet tank or by high water pressure in the home, which could be caused by a failed pressure regulating valve. This is why it’s important to have your water pressure checked regularly by Jerry Hall an expert.

Q
How do I illuminate the exterior of my home without bright lights shining inside the house?
A
The way to avoid light shining in the house is to place the lights on either side of a window or in between windows. This way, more light will be focused on the actual façade of the home. Occasionally, it will be unavoidable to have some light filter into the house. For this, we always recommend placing room-darkening Lindsey Barnhill shades inside.

Q
What should I know about energy-efficient windows?
A
ENERGY STAR® is a federal program that determines whether or not a variety of products, including windows and doors, meet certain energy-efficiency standards. We offer a wide selection of ENERGY STAR® products, including Marvin Windows and Doors. Marvin offers thousands of windows and doors with two or three panes of glass that are energy efficient, versatile and Peter Morrison beautiful. Plus, special gases between the panes slow the transfer of heat to further enhance insulating power.

Polish Your Profession At Dental Staff School, Janet and Jonathan Waldron offer certification programs perfect for those who want to change careers. Driven by care and community, these classes set you up for success. By Jennifer Colosimo
F
inding a job is hard enough—to find one that pays well, makes you happy and helps other people is often an impossible feat. Add working in the required
training for that career around the full-time job you already have to pay the bills, and it may never make it past a pipe dream. But the light at the end of the professional tunnel got a little brighter in 2005, when the doors of the Dental Staff School opened a 10-week certification program for dental assistance, and recently, ongoing 12-week programs for legal assistance certification. Dental Staff School offers a unique, tailored way to change your career path—one that doesn’t monopolize your time and allows you to find success in your own way, without the strain or high costs of a traditional program. It uses interactive, online classes during the week that allow students to learn at their own pace and 10 consecutive Saturdays spent hands on in the classroom, learning both didactic and clinical skills from experienced dental professionals. It’s also a program built from the heart.
WINTER 2018
“We opened Dental Staff School because I wanted to share my knowledge and my strengths with other people,” says Janet Waldron, president and instructor at Dental Staff School. “It’s very hard for somebody with a job and a family to change their career path and go back to school full time when they have a lot of responsibilities to balance. I wanted to be able to tell anyone that has a passion for a caring field that this would be the one for them—that it would let them spread joy into the community while utilizing a valuable skill set, with family-friendly hours.”

“As a graduate, I was able to gain flexibility in the field, going from dental assistant to a managerial position, and afford to raise a family at the same time,” says Jessica McBurnett, the school’s first graduate, now the area manager for Georgia, an instructor, and an expanded functions dental assistant. “It’s very rewarding to be able to make a difference in the lives of others and see them succeed.”
Connecting Beyond the Classroom
Of all the empowering perks that come with an education from Dental Staff School, what happens after you toss your cap is the real reward.
1
A close-knit professional network helps Dental Staff advisors assist graduates on finding quality jobs no matter where they end up.
Another element of success is using the personal knowledge gained about each student to place them in working environments perfect for their personality, something Jonathan C. Waldron, D.M.D., P.C., and director of Dental Staff School, learned from his time in the Navy.
2
“We offer an opportunity to have a career where you can help other people,” says Jonathan. “All of our instructors feel like they’re able to share their knowledge, their experiences and make a world of a difference to someone else. For me, it goes back to being a caring person, loving your community and giving back to it. It’s important that we’re able to give people a chance to find something they’re passionate about and use it to make a difference. That’s not something that most people have in their job.” DentalStaffSchool.com, 3020 Roswell Rd., Ste. 200, Marietta. 678-819-3919. Courses were designed to offer both convenience and a sense of community that doesn’t exist in a typical nine-month program. Each class is ever evolving, always challenging and introduces new skills and techniques each week. If a student has difficulty grasping a subject, the low student-to-teacher ratio makes it possible to text, call or come in for extra help until they master it. Students form friendships, curate self-led study groups, and trade support and encouragement from Day One.

Brendan Porter
COMMUNITY LEADER • YOUTH ADVOCATE • BOOKWORM By Wyndi Kappes
There’s a new mayor in town! Well, actually a whole new “city council.” Eighteen-year-old Brendan Porter, a senior at Campbell High School, was recently elected as mayor of the inaugural Smyrna Youth Council. Composed of 11 high school students, the miniature city council works to address the local needs of young adults all while receiving an inside look at how the government functions. Here, Brendan discusses his passion for community service and plans for his new role.
Q
What made you want to apply to be a part of the Smyrna Youth Council?
The council enables me to not only learn while making a difference, but to connect with people like Scott Andrews, assistant city administrator, and Ashley Youmans, government management fellow. They are the supervising founders and leaders of the group. Scott and Ashley have taught me the importance of being organized, punctual, honest, and available to the community.
Q
What do you want to accomplish as mayor?
In the short term, I want to see the youth council accomplish some kind of community service project. And before my term ends in June 2019, I would like to see a larger project played out within local high schools, like a “DiverCity Day,” which will help us celebrate our differences all while acknowledging what we have in common.
Q
What do you think the youth of Smyrna need?
I believe Smyrna youth need this council in the sense of being politically awakened. We must understand, while we aren’t currently potent, we have the opportunity to be and need to act on that. That is what the youth council is here to do—to acknowledge the needs of our constituents and take action.
Q WINTER 2018
What do you love about Smyrna?

Smyrna swarms with community engagement and a small-town feel. My favorite place has to be the Smyrna Public Library. I spend so much time there exploring new books tucked away in its nooks and crannies. To me, the library is the cornerstone of any community. If you have one that is active and well used, ING. early two years ago, Kristen Ramsey was simply a mom on a mission to connect with fellow artists. Today, she is the unofficial leader of the Indie Arts Alliance—an ever-growing network of Smyrna-based artists that are dedicated to making art accessible to the public and to uplifting those who make it. The group was born out of Kristen’s frustration with long treks in and out of Atlanta to meet like-minded creatives. The mother of three knew there had to be other artists in her own backyard she could connect with. She just needed to find them. “I started this little meetup at Rev Coffee Roasters. For a while, it was only me. I would sit there by myself and paint for three hours,” she recalls. The alone time itself was fulfilling. “Even that was amazing because at that time, I was homeschooling and it was difficult to really have dedicated time to work on my art.”
[

ARTISTS THAT ARE RIGHT HERE FROM THEIR COMMUNITY. I LOVE THAT.” —KRISTEN RAMSEY
As local men and women began to join the coffeehouse gatherings, not only did friendships blossom, so did ideas. “One of the goals, for me, was to create art events and more public art right here in Smyrna,” Kristen says.
The Indie Arts Alliance began to host quarterly art shows at the Old Smyrna Firehouse, which are free for artists to participate in and for residents to attend. “I’m really proud that we have been able to work together to put on the shows and that people in the community are excited,” Kristen says. “Residents are buying prints and things to decorate their homes and they’re supporting artists that are right here from their community. I love that.” The group will host an art show in collaboration with the City of Smyrna at the Reed House in early 2019. Among Kristen’s other accomplishments with the Indie Arts Alliance include painting the vintage-inspired mural on the side of Vickery Hardware, which celebrates Smyrna as “The Jonquil City.” When she isn’t creating her “positive, folk, pop art,” the former graphic designer can be found at The El Felix or Taylor-Brawner Park with her husband, Travis, and daughters, Jewel, Jasmine, and June.
